Sound Ordnance

Why do I need an enclosure?

An enclosure is simply the box that houses your sub; sealed and ported enclosures are the most popular types. A sealed enclosure is usually smaller in size, sacrificing a little volume level to deliver more accurate bass. The ported enclosure features a vent which allows bass waves to escape from behind the mounted sub, augmenting the bass coming off the front of the sub. Ported boxes are louder, bigger, and a little less accurate. Every sub works best in the size and type of enclosure that's recommended by the manufacturer, so make sure you match your sub with the right box.

Our take on the Sound Ordnance™ Bass Bunker

by Dominic Devito

Sound Ordnance's rugged Bass Bunker enclosures come built to last and ready to help your sub deliver real low-frequency firepower. These unloaded boxes feature high-grade, medium-density fiberboard construction, with sealed inner braces that help combat resonance by reducing vibrations. Rounded outside corners and recessed panels allow them to fit into more vehicles, while tough black carpeting defends against incoming nicks and scratches. Bass Bunkers make a great solution when building your own box is not an option.

The BB12-95S sealed enclosure holds one 12" subwoofer and offers an internal volume of 0.95 cubic feet. Just add the right sub, amp, and wiring, then mount the enclosure securely, and you're ready to hit the road with some real bass artillery in your arsenal.

Warning: This enclosure does not include mounting hardware. If you're buying a sub from us, please check "What's in the Box?" to see if screws are included. If not, you should have an assortment of heavy-duty wood screws on hand for the installation.

Our Product Research Team

At Crutchfield, you'll get detailed, accurate information that's hard to find elsewhere. That's because we have our own in-house Product Research team — they open the box, verify contents, check the owner's manual, and record dimensions, features and specs. We stay on top of new products and technologies to help people make informed choices.

Features

Design: The Sound Ordnance BB12-95S Bass Bunker is an unloaded, hatchback-style sealed enclosure for a single 12" subwoofer. It is constructed of 5/8" MDF (medium-density fiberboard), covered in black carpet.

Note: When a Pioneer TS-W3003D2 or TS-W3003D4 subwoofer (item numbers 130W3002D2 and 130W3002D2, sold separately) is installed in this enclosure, there is interference between the interior bracing of the box and the subwoofer frame, such that the sub can't be mounted with the Pioneer logo horizontal. The woofer has to be turned so the logo is at an angle (approximately 45°). Of course this does not affect performance, only cosmetics.

Internal Box Volume: The enclosure has 0.95 cubic feet of airspace.

Terminals: The BB12-95S is equipped with a pair of spring-post speaker terminals, mounted in the rear panel. The spring terminals will accept bare wire, pin connectors, and single banana plugs, but are spaced too far apart for dual banana plugs. Inside the enclosure, the terminals have an attached 18" length of speaker wire for connecting the subwoofer.

Brackets: Brackets for securing the enclosure to your vehicle are recommended.

Sub box

Written By Brian, Maine on Sunday, January 20, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My last 12" sub box was destroyed after a soaking in the back of my topless Jeep. This 5/8" thick construction of the Sound Ordinance box feels a bit flimsy compared to my old 3/4" box. The SO box has better internal bracing so maybe that will keep it tight. The sound is great, with a very loud and tight bass response using my JL sub.
Pros:
Good sound. Nice size
Cons:
Feels a little flimsy

Great Entry-Level Product!

Written By H R, Warshington, DC on Saturday, December 15, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this box on sale to pair with a Polk Audio 12" sub pushed by a bridged Pioneer 2X50W amp and I couldn't be more pleased. Although it's true that they could have used thicker MDF, I don't feel that this seriously detracts from the product at this price, and the build quality is top-rate. Interior and exterior are clean and well finished, box seal is tight, and I had no problems fitting the sub into the opening. Install was accordingly easy, and beyond that, the box just sits there and lets the sub do the work. Insofar that I haven't had to think about or worry about the enclosure since the install, I have to say that it is doing it's job admirably.
Pros:
Price, especially if you can get it on sale! Everything you need for an entry level sub install. Solid, doesn't feel cheap.
Cons:
None: if you want more than this box provides, you need to build your own and stop being so cheap and lazy! Comes with SO branded 'dog tags' which make me feel faintly embarrassed for all parties involved. Sticker was OK, though.

Great value!

Written By Tyler S, Brunswick, MD on Friday, November 30, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

In my last system, I had a Q-Logic box that costs a little more but it seems that the quality is comparable with this one. I like that the carpet is dark so the box doesn't attract a lot of attention to itself (my other box was gray and ugly). I was also suprised to see that the Sound Ordinance logo was stitched on!

Also my Rockford Fosgate punch amps fit neatly on the sides and look really sweet.
Pros:
Value, looks
Cons:
Maybe it could be 3/4" thick but hey, it's a great product for not much money.

I want Q-***** back........

Written By BenD, Cincinnati, OH on Monday, October 15, 2012

I love Crutchfield, I love the customer service, I hate this box. Looks-wise, it's a handsome box; carpet is nice and the sewn-patch look logo are cool.

It ends there.

I was holding the box setting it into place and it slipped sending splintered wood into my thumb. Upon further inspection I found lots of splintered wood lurking beneath the carpet. I stripped the carpet off completely to find the woodworking skills that would embarrass a high school shop class.

The kicker here is it's a big heavy box that ships in a thin cardboard box that was damaged behind repair when I got it. I did not feel like dealing with return shipping (especially without a box to ship it in) and hoping for something better SO I ordered a Q-*****. $20 more gets a VERY solid enclosure made right with 3/4" MDF (not 5/8" like this one).
Pros:
It looks good.
Cons:
A 12 year old could build a better box.

Quality Boxes

Written By Patty, North Florida on Saturday, June 09, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Built to a higher standard than most. I wish the company would make the same box and make it 7" deeper. I could use more cubic feet for some of the subs that I use. I am a tester of equipment and these boxes are the best quality you can get. Just also have one that is deeper and a halr wider for more cubic feet. 10 out of 10.
Pros:
Quality
Cons:
None

Good Solid Box

Written By Alek, Grand Rapids, MI on Friday, March 16, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this box to house an Infinity Kappa 120.9W powered by a Sound Ordnance M-1500 amp. The cutout was a perfect fit for the sub, and I had no trouble mounting it. The whole package is heavy enough that it does not move around in my trunk-the carpet covering helps with that too.

The box seems very well built, and I'm not at all concerned about its long-term durability. I'm not in love with the logo on it, but it doesn't bother me either.
Pros:
Seems quite durable. Well-reinforced, unlike many others in its price range.
Cons:
None so far!

It's a Box

Written By J, Oh on Sunday, October 16, 2011

I've got a Diamond Audio D3 woofer mounted in this box. It seems to have good construction quality and produces accurate sound for a .95 Cu ft sealed enclosure. It's just a box that does it's job

This enclosure is well built and has held up to an RF Punch P3 well so far. I don't particularly like the large white logo on the front of the enclosure though.

A good box

Written By Curt, Spokane, WA on Friday, March 11, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have gotten a lot of things from crutchfield over the years. So shopped other
sites and saw thicker heavier boxes for less but I know C.field dosn't sell crap
sales, service, and internet security is second to none.. So even though the box
was a little thinner I am very satisfied. The construction is good and tight with
good quality spring terminals. You couldn't build a similar QUALITY box for less.

You have to know the type of sound you want and this sealed box puts out a
tight clean bass (if you want bassy/boomy go ported) with my pioneer 12''
champion DVC sub with 800 watt amp.
