AudioQuest

Our take on the AudioQuest King Cobra

by Ralph Graves

Give your high-end components the quality cables they deserve

AudioQuest designed their King Cobra analog audio cables to transfer signals with minimal noise and signal loss. Each cable features three solid copper conductors to virtually eliminate electrical and magnetic interference that can add brittleness to the sound. The extremely pure grade of copper used in the conductors minimizes harshness and distortion, delivering a signal with exceptional clarity.

High-quality construction

Each conductor has its own insulating air tube, which prevents information smearing better than foam insulation. An additional layer of shielding negates almost all electronic noise, for the cleanest signal possible.

Solid connectors

King Cobra cables feature RCA connectors made of silver-plated copper. The connectors are fastened by cold welding — a process that uses high pressure and silver paste to minimize signal loss. By contrast, solder tends to impede the signal, and the heating of the copper conductor during soldering can negatively affect its performance.

    Features

Overview: This AudioQuest King Cobra product contains two 2-meter audio interconnect cables with male RCA connectors on each end. They are for connecting high-end audio sources to your amplifier or receiver.

Triple-Balanced Design: The King Cobra audio interconnect cables are Triple-Balanced, with three identical insulated conductors and a separate conductor under the foil shield. Two conductors are used together for the much higher potential across the negative connection, providing a substantial performance advantage. The shield is only attached at one end, providing total shield coverage without compromising the negative conducting path.

Solid Conductors: King Cobra interconnects use three 21-gauge solid conductors instead of stranded conductors. Electrical and magnetic interaction between strands in conventional cables are the greatest source of distortion, often causing a somewhat dirty harsh sound. Solid conductors produce less distortion, thus produce a very clean sound.

Metal: Perfect-Surface Copper+ (PSC+) has a very smooth and pure surface. AudioQuest's proprietary metal processing technology protects the wire's surface at every stage of drawing and fabrication. An ultra pure copper is kept soft, pure, and smooth as possible during the manufacturing process, resulting in a very low distortion PSC+ conductor. The resulting sound is more focused.

Insulation: All of King Cobra's conductors are insulated using Polyethylene Air Tubes. Air absorbs virtually no energy (which could be stored and released as distortion), and Polyethylene is a low-loss material that causes very little interference or distortion. The conductors and drainwire are wrapped in a red PVC jacket with a black and red nylon braid on the outside.

Noise-Dissipation System: This cable uses a foil/Mylar/foil shield with 100% coverage to capture RF interference that could modulate the equipment's ground reference. The RF is dissipated through a 22-gauge solid, silver-plated, long-grain copper drainwire.

RCA Plugs/Cold-Weld System: The RCA plugs are Direct-Silver plated with 8000-ampere welds, creating a perfect-connection alloy between the cable and the plug. The gold-plated RCA plugs use a patented design that eliminates the distortion caused by the extra contact inside most plugs. Because the ground shells are stamped instead of machined, the metal can be chosen for low distortion instead of for its machinability.

Directionality: The cables are directional, and should be connected in the direction of the signal flow (i.e. from the CD player to the amplifier). The RCA plugs are marked with arrows on each end to indicate the intended signal direction. When connected in the proper direction, the music becomes more relaxed, pleasant, and accurate.

    Good Quality Cable

Written By Tom, Rochester NY on Saturday, December 15, 2012

I didn't want to leave a weak link in the last step of my streaming chain, NAD M51 DAC to NAD T787 AVR. Had a decent Tributary interconnect available, but it is 2m and I only needed about 2 ft, trying to control the maze of cables behind my rack -- and I have a few Audioquest Big Surs lying around, but have never been too thrilled with them. So decided to jump a few levels for a change and try the King Cobra, and "do it right". Well, it is a very good neutral and accurate cable, excellent fit and finish, somewhat cleaner bass and better overall depth of sound than the Big Surs. But honestly, I didn't get the wow factor I was hoping for at the price and specs, specifically no noticeable "open, airy soundstage" improvement coming out of my PSB Synchronies. But I keep reminding myself that all of the subtle improvements do add up. BTW, the cable manufacturers love that school of thought :)
    Pros:
Very neutral, accurate cable. Bass tighter than lower level cables. Good for casual listening, and a good fit for some genres & systems.
    Cons:
Somewhat subdued sound, doesn't seem to ever "just let loose" -- if it's an airy, open sound you're shooting for, might look elsewhere.

    Appropriate for high-end audio

Written By Gregory, Fishook, AK on Tuesday, November 18, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The cables were used to replace the "stock RCA cable" connecting my Pre-Amplifier to the Main Amplifier. The cables provided subtle improvements to the overall sound quality...although the nuances are somewhat difficult to articulate, the music became "cleaner"with subtle variances in instrumentation slightly more audible. These cables would be worth it to anyone trying to maximize the output/enjoyment of an audiophile-grade home-stereo system. Conversly, probabely not worth it for the casual listener.
