Alpine

Why install component speakers?

A component speaker system gives you the best possible performance from your car audio system. A system consists of separate woofers, tweeters, and crossovers, each designed to cover one specific range of frequencies. As separate components, the woofer can move freely to deliver more powerful performance, while the tweeter can be custom-mounted in a better spot up closer to your ears, revealing a whole new world of detail. Separate crossovers are far superior to the simple filters wired into full-range speakers, so the components work together for smoother, more focused sound.

Our take on the Alpine SPS-600C

by Buck Pomerantz
Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Alpine's Type-S component speaker systems fill your vehicle with high-quality sound at a reasonable cost. These rugged components combine outstanding materials with superior construction, so they'll deliver sweet sound in your car for years to come.

The SPS-600C component speaker system features 6-3/4" woofers that pound out strong bass with their lightweight polypropylene-mica cones. Air-injected rubber surrounds control the woofers so they hold their shape while moving freely, eliminating distortion and enhancing bass. Stamped steel frames provide rugged support for these speakers, and their low profile allows them to fit in most factory locations, including most 6-1/2" openings.

Mount the 1" silk dome tweeters separately in a location closer to your ears, and you'll hear all the high-frequency details broadcast clearly without a hint of harshness. You can also swivel these tweeters up to 10 degrees to improve the stereo image at your listening position.

The built-in crossovers make sure the highs and lows go where they're supposed to, for a smooth, natural sound. An efficient design allows these speakers to work well with a low-power receiver, while the rugged internal parts can handle the high-power output of an outboard amplifier.

Highlights:

  • component speaker system includes two woofers, two tweeters, and two built-in crossovers
  • 6-3/4" polypropylene-mica woofer cone with air-injected rubber surround

    Sounds Great

Written By JonG, St. Louis, MO on Saturday, November 12, 2011
Installed in a 2005 Nissan Altima
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you are thinking twice about the component feature, dont. Despite what I had to do to modify my car, they are well worth it. Sounds amazing. These speakers led me to buy rear deck speakers by alpine. which also sound amazing. And to even add more sound to my car I am actually considering adding 2 subs by alpine. I personally was curious at how far the sound would reach on my speakers. I investigated and you can clearly here the song from roughly 1/8 mile away (I didnt go any further than that). In closing Great Speakers if you are willing to deal with the component feature and the installation of those tweeters.
    Pros:
The sound that comes from these speakers is amazing. After my friend and I installed them into my altima, we clearly heard the difference from the stock speakers.
    Cons:
The component feature while sounds great now that it is installed. I had to cut larger holes into the existing tweeter spots on my altima.

These speakers sound pretty good in my 05 Tacoma hooked up to a Sony head unit. With the stock unit they were not that great. For the money I think they are a steal, yes there are much better speakers out there but these work fine for my ears!
    Pros:
    Price and fit
    Cons:
Had to cut stock tweeter wires to install

for the price it cant be beat. sounds pretty good there is almost no bass. they do need more power than a stock deck. the tweeters were really good as far as giving you multiple mounting optionsi poped them out of there little flush mount ring and removed the grill and put them behing my dakotas stock infinity grills. my biggest regret is i didnt get anything with more bass in my truck cab there isnt alot of room for a nice sub but if you have the room or dont want much bass i would't think twice.

This speakers are great and easily installed. Only mods I had to make was cutting a hole for the tweeters with a hole saw. Im running just 45w to each speaker from my aftermarket head unit and the sound is a big step up from the factory sound. I can't wait untill i have saved enough money for the rest of the system im certain that im going to be more than satisfied with the sound these have with the full 80w running to them.

    2008 8 Scion xB Front

Written By Ugh, Burke VA on Friday, September 16, 2011

My son and I just installed these speakers to replace the factory speakers (We installed a new Clarion 50Wx4 head unit late last year). These speakers have awesome range and are sooooooo much better than the factory Pioneer speakers. I am hearing sounds on CDs that I have only previously heard when I am wearing high quality headphones (not wearing these in the car : )). They aslo sound awesome with the FM stations. You do need to dremel the tweeter holder in the upper part of the door to fit the new tweeter (that is not in the Crutchfield directions). These look great since the diameter matches the larger rounded portion of the tweeter panel. One install note: If you want to use the factory wiring, you will need to separate the factory tweeter connector from the factory tweets and reconnect it or you will get no sound out the front speakers. The factory wiring goes through the tweet first before it goes to the woofer. It was easy to do........1-2 minute with a pocket knife and a wire cutter......this also is not in the Crutchfield instructions.

Installed these recently in my silverado pickup which had the Bose system from the factory. Speakers are definately better than what I replaced. I had previously replaced my tuner and these speakers do seem to need the extra power to drive them. If you have a stock tuner you may not see the same improvement. I think these speakers are a great value

Fairly easy replacement for factory Infinity speakers in the front doors of 2000 Durango/Dodge pickup. The main speakers are a perfect fit with the supplied hardware. The tweeters are close, I used the plastic brackets that came with them and hot glue.

Awesome, even have great bass for the size. They perfectly complimented the AlpineSPS-406 Type-S 4"x6" 2-way car speakers i have in the dash, and the CDA-105 headunit. Only watch your dimensions and measurements for flush mounting the tweeters as the tweeter is 2 " but the locking ring is sturdy and about another 1/4' wide all the way around. Sounds incredible!

Installed these in my 2000 Dodge Dakota Quad cab 4WD. Have the Infinity component system. Replaced 4 speakers.Kept the oem tweeters since they were still good. It only took about an hour and a half to do the job. The information provided was great. I used the SPS 600 speakers for the rear doors. Door panels went off and back on easy. New speakers sound as good as I remember the original sounded new.

    Installed in a 1990 Nissan 300ZX
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I first installed these speakers, they sounded alright. Upon breaking in, they sounded much better. The highs are super clear and the mids are just OK. Although, the bass blockers (in-line crossovers) do an insufficient job of keeping the lower end frequencies from the tweeters. Due to this, I had to turn the bass down on my stereo because the tweeters were getting the low frequencies and sounded terrible. So now, the components are pretty much just tweeters. I MUST get subs now, because the lower end just isn't there. I would highly recommend spending the extra money to get the Type-R's or another component set that has external crossovers. If you already have subs, these speakers are for you!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wow. Put these in the frond doors of a 2004 Silverado 2500HD and can't believe the quality of the sound coming from the factory stereo. Huge improvement over factory speakers. The base is good for the speaker size despite what some others have written and with a little tweaking of the equalizer the sound is really good. Unfortunately they don't fit the back doors so I am waiting to receive a set of Sony XS-GTX1641 for them. For now I just use the front speakers and the sound is good. Installation was easy, tweaters did not exactly fit factory openning but I was able to make it work.

    Great Speakers

Written By ScottyL, Raleigh, NC on Sunday, August 14, 2011
Installed in a 2007 Dodge Dakota
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the money these speakers are hard to beat, sound great, easy to install and overall good build quality. Some of the reviews mention the tweeters are too bright, keep in mind when the tweeters are placed closer to your ears the highs will be much more pronounced. Check the frequency response/cut offs on your head unit or amp and set them accordingly, call a Crutchfield adviser for help. Others have noted the speakers do not produce great low end or heavy bass, they are correct. These speakers do a great job in the mid bass area, super clear vocals, brass instruments shine and snare drums pop, if installed properly you get a really nice punchy bass. They do what speakers this size are supposed to do, if you want the deep, heavy low end rumbling bass you will have to add a sub woofer of some sort to the mix. I have two pair of these speakers in my Dakota Club Cab, one pair front and one pair back and dual JL Audio 12" woofers in a subbox with separate amp. With the subbox in versus out it sounds like two entirely different systems.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased these speakers to replace the stock ones that came with my 2008 Honda civic. I also installed Dynamat on the door. The 6 1/2" went in no problem with the Bracket that Crutchfield sent. I didn't have to modify the door or cut anything just like Crutchfield said. The tweeter I keep in the stock location and had to do a custom flush mount with zip ties. The tweeter is awesome. Before you couldn't even hear the stock tweeter now the highs are crisp and nice and you defiantly hear the difference. The woofer produces pretty nice bass and great mids. The biggest gain is in the quality of the highs. If you are looking for super low bass that really thumps get a sub. But I am more than happy with the bass these produce. I would recomand these to a friend that wanted to update his stock speakers. If I add a amp I might push these spearkers to hard but for just a replacement of stock speakers that the head unit runs they sound great. They are just what I wanted.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got these speakers for a great price, and decided on ordering these to replace some garbage kicker speakers. For what I paid, these are great. I would have paid the regular price if I would have known how good these would sound. I currently only have the speakers in the without the tweeters because they don't fit where the stock ones are and I don't have the time or patience right now to find a good spot and put them in, but the stock tweeters and these speakers sound great together. I highly recommend.

And to touch on some small things, the bass in these is pretty good for 6 1/2s, they aren't ment to be subs but they do a good job for what they are.

Installed in a 2004 Nissan Xterra
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Some of the other reviews state that these sounds a bit "tinny". I'm inclined to agree, at least without some tweaking of the EQ on the deck. Having done that, I'm quite pleased with them at this point. The tweeters were were easy to mount solidly, and sound good now. The woofers appear to be decent quality, at least for a set of speakers in this price range. The only issue I had was with the supplied adapter brackets for my 04 xterra. The manner in which the speaker mounts to the bracket is annoying, and the holes in the bracket for the screws don't quite line up with the stock mounting holes. On the first side, I able to force all the screws into the stock holes, but on the second side, I gave up and used one of the provided screws in a new hole.

Overall, these seem to be decent speakers with a little patience during the installation, and tweaking of the EQ function following that. I'd recommend these as long as whatever deck you're purchasing with them has a decent EQ function.

    Nice sounding speakers

Written By Alex, Santa Cruz, CA on Monday, May 23, 2011

Just put these into my 2000 4Runner. Sounds fantastic, I highly recommend these speakers.

The crossover is part of the wire that runs from the main speaker to the tweeter, and this makes for a really easy install. Other speakers come with a large crossover that you have to mount somewhere.

They are a bit lacking in bass, but thats to be expected. The mids sound good, and the highs sound incredible. I am listening to songs I have owned for years and am hearing parts I never noticed before.

Tested with dubstep, house, and some good ol' System of a Down. Sounded great with all three genres of music.
