Our take on the Bose® Companion® 5 multimedia speaker system

by Tara W.

Do you use your PC to watch DVDs and play games? Get more from their surround soundtracks with the Companion® 5 multimedia speaker system. Exclusive Bose processing creates a rich, enveloping soundfield around your desk using just two compact speakers and an Acoustimass® module. The system plugs into your PC through any USB port, making setup a breeze.

Virtual surround sound from a hideaway system

And how does this system deliver wraparound audio from just two compact speakers and a bass module? Bose's TrueSpace® digital surround processing circuitry is the answer. It creates virtual surround sound from speakers positioned no further apart than the width of your computer monitor. You'll hear crisp dialogue and engaging surround effects from your favorite movies and games.

Quick and simple setup

Setting up a conventional surround speaker system for your PC takes time, effort, and some computer savvy, too. Bose has taken the work out of adding high-quality computer speakers — simply connect the Acoustimass® module to your PC's USB port, hook up the speakers, and plug in the power cord. Your computer will detect the system, and you're ready to start enjoying better sound.

Control at your fingertips

The Companion® 5 system also includes an easy-to-use control pod. It houses the volume control as well as a headphone jack and an auxiliary input for an iPod® or other MP3 player. The separate control pod means you can place the speakers out of the way and still have easy access to the system's volume control and connections for additional gear.

Highlights:

  • Acoustimass® module/satellite speaker system
  • video-shielded satellite speakers
  • tethered control pod contains:
    • auxiliary minijack input

    Features
    Inputs and Outputs

    Features

Satellite Speakers: Each satellite uses dual 2" long-throw, wide-range drivers, mounted in an angled array, for lifelike, spacious sound. The satellites, which are permanently attached to their 6" stands, are magnetically shielded to prevent interference with a CRT-type monitor.

TrueSpace: The proprietary TrueSpace surround digital processing circuitry creates an enveloping sound environment from just two visible speakers. The system is designed for sitting at the computer. TrueSpace makes your music, games, movies, and other 5.1-channel decoded material sound like it's coming from a 5-speaker system.

Acoustimass Module: The Acoustimass Module delivers clean, deep low frequencies. The module can be hidden almost anywhere in the listening area and allows for small, elegant speakers without sacrificing performance. You can adjust the amount of bass output with the rotary Bass Compensation dial on the back of the bass module.

Control Pod: The multi-function pod houses volume control, a headphone jack, and a connection for a second audio source such as an MP3 player. Its touch-sensitive top lets you quickly mute the speakers, while the LED Mode Indicator shows you the status of the system: Active (green), Muted (amber), or Standby (red). The high-friction rubberized base prevents the control pod from moving around on your desk. Dimensions:

    • Diameter: 2.435
    • Height: 1.121"
    • Cable Length: 7.75'

Active Equalization: The active equalization electronically tunes the frequency response, enabling outstanding audio performance for improved speech intelligibility.

Compression Circuitry: The system's compression circuitry lets you enjoy clear, undistorted sound, even at high volumes.

USB/Analog Inputs: The Companion 5 connects to your computer via a single USB connection. No special software, soundcard, adapters, or additional wiring is needed. An analog 3.5mm mini-jack input is available on the control pod for connecting a second audio source.

Computer Setup: Using a USB port, the Companion 5 bypasses the computer's soundcard. Bose recommends setting your computer's audio output to 5.1 Surround Sound Speakers (PC) or Multichannel (Mac).

Computer System Recommendation: For best performance, your computer should meet the following minimum requirements:

    • 1 GHz minimum, Pentium processor or equivalent
    • 256 MB RAM minimum
    • USB 2.0
    • Microsoft Windows XP or later, or Mac OS X 10.4.6 or later
    • A compatible 5.1-channel surround sound decoder residing on your computer

    Inputs and Outputs

    Back Panel of Acoustimass Module:

    • AC Input: polarized input for supplied AC cord
    • Satellite Speakers: left and right 4-pin Molex jacks that connect to the supplied satellite speakers
    • Control Pod: 9-pin female jack that connects to the control pod
    • To Computer: USB Type B jack that connects to the computer via USB cable

    Control Pod:

    • Phones: 3.5mm stereo mini-jack headphone output
    • Audio Input: 3.5mm stereo mini-jack

    Good, not great

Written By WAMaruna, New Bern, NC on Friday, March 29, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had the Companion 5, ordered from Crutchfield, about two weeks as I write this. I own both the Bose and the Klipsch Pro-Media 2.1 system. I find the Bose to have a very 'bright' sound, almost metallic, with strong bass from the acoustimass module. The hockey-puck control is convenient and very substantial feeling but lacks a bass control which is located only on the back of the acoustimass module. There is definitely some digital processing going on to achieve the wide dispersion sound from the satellites. It does not equate to a 5.1 sound to me but does produce an overall effect akin to a live performance. That said, there is something missing, and I would say it is in the lower midrange. In comparison, the Klipsch Pro-Media has stronger, more filling bass, which is not to say the Bose bass is lacking. The Klipsch sound is fuller but not as live or as bright, somewhat lacking at the top end. It also has both an overall volume control plus a bass volume control on one of the satellites. If you could mash these two systems together without screwing things up, you'd have the makings of a great system. My dear dead departed Cambridge Soundworks 510d 5.1 system is still the best I have ever owned.
    Pros:
Simulated sound dispersion, life-like experience, strong bass
    Cons:
Lacking in lower mid-range to my ears

Previous to purchasing these speakers for my MacBook, I was using the introductory Bose speakers. They were good, but I was ready for an upgrade since so much of the music I listen to is from iTunes. These speakers produce the best sound of any computer speakers I have ever experienced. The high notes are crystal clear and the deep bass is wonderful with the subwoofer. Just make sure you have ample room for the subwoofer because all of the connections to the speakers, the computer and the wall outlet run from the subwoofer. I highly recommend this system.

    Unnatural Sound Quality.

Written By John T., New York, New York on Monday, May 21, 2012

I have been using these Bose speakers on my imac for over 3 years now and I must say that with DVD movies they sound great but when reproducing music they sound horrible. I can hear no difference between lossy mp3 and lossless flac files on the Bose. However when I play back those same music files on high quality stereo speakers, I hear everything that is wrong with compressed music like mp3. Furthermore, The Bose speakers Have a totally inarticulate midrange that sounds the same with whatever type of music I play on them and to make matters worse the subwoofer while good for sound effects sounds the same whether a musician is playing upright acoustic or electric bass. I went over to a friends apartment the other day and heard his cheap speakers. and was amazed at how much more musically natural they sounded than the Bose Speakers at half the price. In fact I've heard many other Bose products and I can tell you that are not only poorly designed and built many similar products from other companies sound far better at one half to one quarter the price of Bose products. If you don't believe me look up audio magazine and "Bose" on the internet.
    Pros:
    Sound good with Home Theater
    Cons:
Terrible with music. Poorly built. Overpriced.

    Long Past Due Review!

Written By Greg, CO on Sunday, May 20, 2012

I've had these speakers, along with many other Bose systems, for a few years now. I have to say this system sounds SOOO much better than any of the other Bose products I have! I don't have a sound card any longer, don't need it, and I used to spend a lot of money on those things. I just reinstalled Windows 7 and iTunes, plugged in my iPhone and couldn't have been more impressed with the sound quality, no drivers, nothing but Windows 7, iTunes and my iPhone. I listen to music in a whole new way with this system, the base is full and rich. I just can't find any system that can play music like this can. I'm sure if I spent 1000's of dollars I could recreate it, but why? I spent $400 on the best sound I can find for the money.
    Pros:
Vocals are crystal clear, lows and highs are well defined as well. Easy to install, just plug in the USB cable!!!
    Cons:
I do not believe these are surround sound as they claim! But I would listen to them in every location in my home if I could, the sound is that good! So there really are no cons!

    5

Written By Mark, Ohio on Friday, April 20, 2012

Bose Companion 5 is simple to set up simple to use, the older I get the more I love simple. I am pleased because I use a minimum recording level of 256kbp for my music. The music has heft, even a robust sound stage for a near field computer speaker. What I like most is Bose has been reliable. I don't have time to get it to work. When you unbox the unit, plug it up, it works and it keeps on. To me that is worth the money. I compliment Bose with a level of consistency that belies the return expectations, not every brand does that anymore. I will stay within the Bose line in the future because I know at a certain price point I am going to get what I expect, more importantly what I am looking for. This is comforting, because many other once formidable brands have now forwarded a nice looking package, with their name on it. When you listen to it in a big box store for instance, it sounds no better than a walkie talkie or AM radio on a good day. On the contrary you know what you are going to get with the Bose Companion 5, a rewarding sound, if you didn't think so you would have never brought it home, sadly this is not always so readily true with other brands.
    Pros:
In my opinion this is a finesse device. Its an arm length or near field unit that gives the experience while working you can rest assured the lightness comes with musical notes dancing in the air, landing on some stanza with the delicate notes of the artists then you are a part of something special.
    Cons:
The Companion 5 doesnt work with flatscreen.

    Incredible Speakers

Written By Layne, Charleston on Monday, January 23, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Like many, I spend about 8 to 9 hours per day in-front of my computer working. To make that time more tolerable, I listen to music. After going through several sets of much cheaper speakers over the years, I decided that since I spend so much time listening to music on the computer it was time to buy a good set of speakers. These are expensive speakers but worth every dime. They bring a fullness to the music that I did not think possible from a computer. Because of the USB connection, you are not limited by the quality of the sound card in the computer (BTW, computer was provided by the lowest bidder). The volume controller is great. The volume, input and output ports are all very handy being together. Again, these speakers are incredible.
    Pros:
Quality of sound, volume controller, ability to control base
    Cons:
Price! However these are worth the price paid.

    What do you want ?

Written By ScottB, Kingsport,TN on Thursday, December 01, 2011

After using these for four years, I bought a set of B&W MM-1s from Crutchfield. The difference is like night and day. The MM-1s are so much clearer and don't have the muddy sound that the Bose do. B$Ws are higher than the Bose but I fell worth every penny of the difference. If you want really clear sound, save a little more money and get a set of B&Ws. If you want the fake surround sound, get the Bose. I enjoyed them for years not knowing there was anyone else who could make great sounding speakers. Overall they are not bad, but having both and switching back and forth, the MM-1s are a much better value at this price. Crutchfield had them to me two days after ordering, GREAT SERVICE!!! If Crutchfield has what I am wanting, that is where I will buy from now on.
    Pros:
These are pretty good speakers that do what Bose says they will. They produce a full and almost beleiveable surround sound. I've had them for four years now without any major problems. Seems to be a well made product.
    Cons:
For the price, you should get more. Another dislike is the same as one thing I like about them, they do what Bose says they will, nothing more. The sound should be cleaner than what it is.

    Bose® Companion® 5 multimedia speaker system

Written By crash, berks pa on Tuesday, July 26, 2011

was given the campanion 5 system for my b day by the family great sound used it for music in a half court b ball sized hall at a church christmas party was asked to turn it down no one could hear each other talk. sounded muddy at first but i didnt have the volume control seated properly never thought of it as a 'surround sound' device nor is it billed as such so buy it and enjoy don't get caught up in stupidity like fiber optics [really fiber optics?!?great for data transfer but minimal benifit in audio i would think excpt in special cases] in technology sometimes more isn't better its just more. unfortunatly many people have more knowledge than they can properly process just because they can use it properly in a sentence doesnt mean they understand companion 5 makes what i listen to sound great from brams to zz top and beyond if i want surround sound [which i don't] i'll buy a system that has it. do people live to complain?? [like me] i'd buy another if i had the need. this is a great system with great sound that improves when you use the installation cd it really is great

Written By JDOG!, ARMPIT NJ on Thursday, June 30, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really love em. The remote volume control seemed useless but I use it all the time. The sound quality fills my office. Overfills it actually. I have no issue with the sound quality. Here are my few issues: Longer speaker, sub cables would have been super as having the option to distance them from your ears would be nice. They actually seem to sound better in the next room. -I so wish that the Bass control was on the remote as well. I often change the control as to accommodate others nearby. This would be a helpful feature. Not sure if anyone else feels the same. my .02 Great product. I would buy again.

years I hear things that I have never heard before, and completely clear whether
the sound is low or loud. Completely worth the money you pay for them.

Accidental Damage from Handling (ADH) guards you against life's little mishaps, whether you drop your MP3 player on the street or spill coffee on your camera.

ADH must be added to your Care Plan at the time of Care Plan purchase; it cannot be added retroactively. ADH coverage begins on the 31st day after the item's purchase - issues in the first 30 days are not covered.
