Panamax

Our take on the Panamax M4300-PM

by Ralph Graves

Protect your equipment and improve its performance

M4300-PM back panel

Bullet-proof protection for your entire audio/video system.

A home theater system requires clean, consistent AC power to operate at its best. Panamax's M4300-PM protects up to nine components from harmful power spikes and surges, as well as the minor voltage fluctuations that can compromise your system's performance over time. It also filters the incoming AC power, removing line noise to maximize your system's picture and sound quality. Easy to hook up and easy to use, the M4300-MP is our best-selling line conditioner.

Automatic protection for your peace of mind

Panamax's patent pending AVM™ circuitry continuously monitors the incoming power. If either undervoltage or overvoltage is detected, power to the connected equipment is automatically turned off. When the line voltage returns to a safe level, power is automatically reconnected.

The eight AC outlets on the back panel are divided into two isolated banks. One bank handles high-current components, such as your receiver and subwoofer, while the other bank handles your other audio/video gear. Isolating the outlet banks from one another prevents noise contamination between components. A front-panel convenience outlet lets you quickly plug in a video game system or camcorder.

Two sets of coaxial inputs and outputs protect your satellite, cable or TV antenna connections. A pair of protected phone jacks prevents spikes from sneaking in through your phone line, and a pair of Ethernet jacks protects your network connection. This versatile unit also features a protected front-panel USB charger for your MP3 player, cell phone or other portable electronic device.

M4300-PM

Dual front-panel convenience lights shine downward to illuminate your other components.

Conveniences that enhance day-to-day use

A digital voltmeter with adjustable brightness lets you monitor the power coming into your system. The M4300-PM also features two hooded convenience lights that shine downward to illuminate the front panels of your stacked components. You can change the intensity of these lights, or turn them off, as you prefer.

    Features

9 AC Outlets: The Panamax M4300-PM features 1 front-panel "Always On" AC outlet, 4 rear-panel "Switched Linear Filtered" AC outlets, and 4 rear-panel "Switched High Current" AC outlets.

    • High Current Outlets: The unit's High Current Outlets provide power from a low impedance noise filtration circuit that does not limit the current to your equipment. Its output is noise isolated from all of the other outlets.
    • Linear Noise Filtration Outlets: The Linear Noise Filtration Outlets provide a two stage tapped Pi filter circuit for each outlet in bank 2.
    • Gaming Outlet: The M4300-PM features a convenient AC outlet located on the front-panel for connecting your gaming system temporarily.

Level 2 Power Cleaning and Linear Filtration: The unit's Level 2 Power Cleaning and Linear Filtration eliminates common symptoms of contaminated power (including loss of detail, pops, hisses, hums and visual artifacts) and allows your A/V equipment to perform up to its full capability. Linear Filtering Technology (LiFT) evenly eliminates noise across the entire bandwidth, ensuring peak audio and video performance by reducing harmonic distortion and improving the signal-to-noise ratio.

Automatic/Visual Voltage Monitoring Circuitry: Panamax's patent pending AVM circuitry continuously monitors the incoming power as displayed on the unit's digital voltmeter. In case of an undervoltage or an overvoltage, a flashing red lightning bolt will be displayed in the voltmeter, and power to the connected equipment is automatically turned off if either of these conditions is detected. When voltage returns to a safe level, power to the equipment is automatically reconnected.

Cross-Contamination Reduction: The M4300-PM is designed to provide noise isolation between 2 isolated outlet banks including 4 high current outlets so that any noise created by an A/V component can not contaminate the power going to equipment plugged into another outlet bank.

HD Ready Coax Jacks: The unit's coaxial protection circuits achieve optimum signal quality from newly designed connectors that have less than 0.5 dB of attenuation from 0Hz to 2.2GHz. The unit's clamping level of 75V will meet the demands of both cable and satellite voltage while minimizing exposure to damaging spikes and surges.

LAN/Phone Jacks: Protection circuits for 10/100 baseT Ethernet and standard telephone or pay-per-view lines. Phone circuit is auto-resetting. In-coming LAN or phone cords must be plugged into the "Line" jack. Patch cords to the equipment (satellite receiver, digital video recorder, telephone, computer, etc) must be plugged into the "Equip" jacks ( 2 Line in jack, 2 Equip jacks).

USB Charger: The M4300-PM features a front-panel USB type-A port for charging your MP3 player, cell phone, or other small electronic.

Digital Voltmeter: The M4300-PM features a front-panel Digital Voltmeter which monitors the voltage supplying your home theater equipment. If line voltage drops below 90VAC, or if the line voltage exceeds 142VAC, the display will turn off and the "unsafe voltage" indicator will flash indicating and unsafe voltage condition.

Outlet Bank Power LEDs: Each bank of outlets feature a corresponding Blue LED indicator. These LEDs indicate the status of the corresponding rear panel outlets. The LED will be lit when the outlets are turned On. They will flash during the startup and shutdown process.

Front Panel Lights: The M4300-PM is equipped with two switchable convenience lights to view your media and home theater system in the dark.

Circuit Breaker: A circuit breaker is located on the back panel of the M4300-PM. The circuit breaker will trip only if the total current draw exceeds the maximum current rating (15A). This means that collectively, all outlets must draw more than 15 amps before the circuit breaker will trip.

$5,000,000 Lifetime Connected Equipment Warranty: Panamax will replace, pay to replace at fair market value, or pay to repair, up to $5,000,000 of equipment that is damaged by an AC surge while connected to a properly installed Panamax surge protector, if the surge protector shows signs of surge damage or is operating outside of design specifications. For coverage conditions and information on how to make a claim, please see the warranty sheet.

    Awesome

Written By JoshW, Bothell, WA on Monday, January 14, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent especially for the price. Replaced a standard surge protector strip with this. It not only made my picture a little better but increased the output of my receiver by 5db. Highly recommended. Hopefully I never have to find out how it protects against a large surge, but definitely worth the money for the piece of mind. As an electrician, I like the ability to see what voltage it is putting out.
    Pros:
Lights on front, plenty of outlets

    INSURANCE POLICY!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the most important piece of equipment in your Home Theater system! The US power grid is not 100% stable. Brown-outs occur thousands of times a day throughout the country. The electricity coming into your residence is contaminated with nasties like EMI/RFI etc. A lightning strike or power surge a mile,5 miles even 10 miles away has the potential to destroy your A/V system. Can you replace your equipment for $175? Probably not. Six years ago a storm 7 miles from my residence sent a power surge into the PANAMAX line conditioner/surge suppressor in my A/V system. Not one piece of the connected equipment was damaged, although the PANAMAX was fried! I rest my case.
    Pros:
Superior audio and video quality.Power cords are neatly placed.Adjustable lighting makes it easy to see the controls on your A/V Receiver. Great price!
    Cons:
    NONE

    Panamax 4300

Written By j-zee, Wisconsin on Thursday, December 20, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Totally as advertised. I had been having trouble with HDMI faults - several of them and some pixelization while watching blu ray movies. No more issues with HDMI and my TV looks better than ever. My receiver seems to have more power and my subwoofer hits a whole lot harder now. If you question your power even just a little bit, consider what you paid for your TV and the small cost of this unit - and get one. Might be one of the best purchases I have ever made.
    Pros:
Is everything it is advertised to be.
    Cons:
The only thing I wish it could do was the ability to dim the main display light, that's it!

    Great sale price at $175.00
    Pros:
Compact size, front USB port and grounded front power outlet.
    Cons:
Does not have a dimmer for the voltage readout and no switch to turn completely off. Also has ugly amber front lighting that can be dimmed or turned off.

This unit looks so good on my TV stand along with my gears. I pluged the LCD TV and Denon receiver in it. The resolution of the TV looks a little more sharper. I bought electronic gears from Crutchfield since 1984, and I knew Crutchfield sell high quality products. I am happy with my purchase for this item.

    Pros:
It has an USB charger and a gaming outlet on the front panel.

    Recommend

Written By Joseph, Minneapolis, MN on Sunday, December 09, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A Crutchfield advisor recommended purchasing this powerline conditioner for my home theater. I was on the fence about it given the price, but I had gotten good holiday deals for the other big components of my system, so I figured I could still fit this into my budget.

Overall, I definitely recommend the M4300-PM to anyone setting up a home theater system. It's built well and provides organization to all your power cords. The power outlet on the front of the unit is very practical, and I intend to use it often when I need juice for my laptop while it's streaming to the TV. The orange front lights are a cool-looking feature that actually comes in handy as well, especially if you have a dark room and need light to see the controls on your A/V receiver.
    Pros:
Provides clean power, keeps your system organized, and comes with convenient functions, e.g. front outlet and front lighting (which can be toggled to different brightness settings).
    Cons:
If you're just looking for a basic surge protector for your system, there is sure to be cheaper out there.

    Great Product

Written By Anonymous, Pittsburgh, PA on Sunday, December 09, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great product that I got for a great price! Feels like I stole it from Crutchfield! Noticed a better picture and sound...not alot, but noticable to me. The hum in my powered subs is virtually gone (have a loose RCA that is the culprit) but the noise was cut down significantly. The amber and blue LEDs are a cool touch and I like how they can be dimmed or turned off.
    Pros:
Does what they claim it can do. Sort of a rarity now a days.
    Cons:
    None.

    Panamax M4300-PM

Written By Tom, Ohio on Thursday, December 06, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice unit, sturdy construction. Runs a little warm in my system but is a very nice additional. The downlights are a great touch and are useable in my system, however it would be nice so that they could be rotated to aim upwards or at angles. Would be great too if you could dim the main display but hey at the marked down price, it's good.
    Pros:
USB port on the front, good display, solid construction including long, beefy power cord.
    Cons:
    None really.

    Believe It

Written By JeffreyA, Blue Springs, MO on Thursday, November 15, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you have a nice system but are on the fence because of the "you don't need a power conditioner" rhetoric that exists out there in some corners of the A/V world, let me suggest to you that it is time to get off. Let's be honest, yes, you don't need it. But you don't "need" a nice system to begin with, do you? Or a hot wife/girlfriend? Or any number of things. No, since hooking it up, lightning hasn't struck my house or anything, putting my Panamax to its most extreme test. I have, however, noticed better picture and sound. It's subtle, but if I notice it...that's what counts. The main display shows you the deviation between what your utility company is pumping out of your outlet and into your swanky audio components and HDTV. Trust me, it ain't exactly 120 volts most of the time. Storms or no storms. The amber lights are cool, of course, and can be adjusted. The main blue lights can be dimmed, as well (and the middle one can be turned off entirely, if desired).

After unplugging my TV to plug it into the Panamax and then looking at the picture, I had to double check to see if my calibration-type settings had been reset (which would've been the TV's "fault" probably, rather than the Panamax's). Nope. They were the same. That "brighter" nicer-looking picture? That was simply the result of adding an M4300 to my system. I can only vouch for what it looked like in my basement: gorgeous. And THE SOUND. Played some music that had me in tears it was so nice. A worthwhile purchase.
    Pros:
Ease of setup. Looks. Noticeably improved picture and sound.
    Cons:
    ?

    Nice, Clean, Compact!

Written By Rick, Lompoc, CA on Saturday, November 10, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The M4300-PM is an additional unit for my home entertainment system, the other unit is a M5100-PM. I'm using the M4300-PM to power my subwoofer, stereo speakers, music hard drive and various accessories. It provides clean stable power as expected and there was a noticeable improvement in sound quality. The down lights are a nice touch but not everyone will be setup in a manner that allows them to take advantage of the downward lighting, in my case it is useful. However, it would be better if the unit had the same indicator light dimming capability that the M5100-PM features, which I feel is more useful as the blue indicator lighting is very bright.
    Pros:
Great performance for the dollar, worth the price when you want to protect your investment.
    Cons:
No way to dim bright indicator lighting.

    Nice Product

Written By Jim, Central VA on Friday, October 19, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit is a great little surge protector/power conditioner. To start, it just plain looks cool. It looks great with the cobalt blue display and the amber front panel convenience lights. But the true test is how well it protects your equipment while cleaning up muddy power. We have had a few storms pass through the area lately and all of my electronics have been well protected. We had some fluctuations in our lights as the storms passed but everything connected to the panamax stayed stable and happy. Just as important, the power conditioning has also improved the output of my equipment. The TV looks clearer and the sound of the surround sound is now crystal clear. I really believe if you are going to put money into a decent home theater system you need to put some money into protecting it from rogue power. This unit is well worth it's price.
    Pros:
Great surge protection and power conditioning, it will make your equipment look and sound better. Plus, the unit looks great.
    Cons:
    None so far.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This thing is made like a tank! Nice long cord and ample space between the plugs. meter is great, plugged in a vacume cleaner in a nearby wall outlet and turned it on. You could actually see the voltage drop on the meter but never below 120. the led downlights are more for estetics than useful, but nothing wrong with that, in my opinion. looks very cool. AND a great price!
    Pros:
long cord, very well made, works great
    Cons:
it'd be nice to be able to dim blue meter a bit but not a big deal at all.

Glad I purchased this. Been watching it for months! Hooked up my computer, tv, sound bar, ps2, xbox360, wii, comcast, everything to this device and everything fits just perfect. The display lights on the front are cool and the usb/outlet port on the front are also very handy. Haven't particuarly noticed the picture improving but I had pretty clear picture to start with. Happy with the purchase and its nice having a guarantee on all my electronics and a nice looking unit.
    Pros:
nice looking, 5mil guarantee, lots of outlets, convience ports
    Cons:
    none so far

    Panamax M4300-PM

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Panamax M4300-pm an excellent purchase for the price. It is relatively small However is very accurate in the readings and the picture on my television has cleared up dramatically as did allot of the distortion on channels of the radio that I normally could not hear what was being played. A Thunderstorm's lightning strike hit close to home and the protection was definitely there; It cut off all power immediately & restored it back to normal use within seconds; all of my equipment was protected and I did not even have to reset the unit!! If you are looking for protection (up to 5 million dollars worth) the price and unit is an excellent value!!!
    Pros:
Enough Jacks for someone who has between 0-9 hookups and each are clearly labeled and fully functional the display is constantly giving an accurate reading as to the voltage coming out of the wall and the protection is definitely there!!
    Cons:
    None!!

This is a nice piece of equipment. I had a significant amount of hum before I bought it and almost none now.
