What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Our take on the Kicker 10C104

by Dominic Devito

Strong bass adds a whole new dimension to your car's sound system, and Kicker Comp subwoofers give you tremendous bass value for your dollar. You'll hear and feel the power of Kicker bass without feeling like your wallet just got thumped.

Kicker technology at work
Each Comp sub features a flex-resistant polypropylene cone with 360-degree back bracing for hard-hitting lows without distortion. The ribbed foam surround offers long excursion and keeps the cone on target, while double stitching ensures your investment won't come apart at the seams. A tough steel basket provides a reliable foundation for big bass, and its extensive venting ensures long-lasting performance that won't break down when the bass gets heavy.

Easy to add to nearly any setup
Kicker's 10C104 10" subwoofer handles up to 150 watts RMS to bring out the depth your music's been missing, and its 4-ohm impedance makes it compatible with just about every amplifier on the market. This versatile sub works well in sealed or ported enclosures, and it's even suitable for free-air applications.

  • 10" 4-ohm subwoofer
  • injection-molded polypropylene cone
  • ribbed foam surround
  • suitable for free-air use

    Subwoofer Features
    Enclosure Compatibility

    Subwoofer Features

Polypropylene Cone: The Kicker Comp subwoofer's super-rigid injection-molded polypropylene cone features 360-degree back bracing to completely eliminate flex and distortion.

Ribbed Foam Surround: The optimized ribbed foam surround allows extended cone excursion for additional bass output and higher SPL. The surround is double-stitched to the cone to add a mechanical fastener to the chemical adhesives. This prevents the cone and surround from separating in the harshest conditions.

Spiralead Tinsel Leads: The Kicker Comp subwoofer features durable Spiralead tinsel leads, which are woven into the woofer's progressive-roll polycotton spider, for added strength and reliability.

Steel Basket with Vented Pole Piece: The Kicker Comp subwoofer features a resilient, steel basket with coil-cooling perimeter venting and a vented pole piece for heat dissipation, so the high-temperature voice coil stays cool.

Speaker Terminals: The spring-loaded, nickel-plated terminals provide solid connections for speaker wire up to 10-gauge. Single banana plugs and pin connectors will also fit.

Rubber Magnet Boot: A black rubber boot covers the outside edge of the magnet structure to improve the cosmetics of the woofer and protect the magnet during installation.

    Enclosure Compatibility

Enclosure Versatility: The Kicker Comp subwoofer is versatile, performing in vented or sealed enclosures, and in free-air applications as well.

Sealed Enclosure Applications: A sealed enclosure design gives the smoothest response with increased energy at the lowest frequency between 20 to 30 Hz.

    • Compact (minimum enclosure volume): 1.0 cu/ft
    • SQ (maximum enclosure volume): 2.4 cu/ft

Recommended Vented Box Volume: A vented enclosure design is the choice for loud, high-performance bass for SPL contests.

    • Compact: 1.25 cu/ft with a 1.5" x 10.5" slot port opening that is 14.5" in depth
    • SQ: 1.75 cu/ft with a 1.5" x 10.5" slot port opening that is 13.25" in depth

Note: The SQ enclosures generates a flatter response curve and extends sub-bass response.

Infinite Baffle Mounting: The Kicker Comp subwoofer does not require a sealed or vented enclosure for good bass performance. The Comp subwoofer is designed to also be used as a free-air driver. The infinite baffle mounting method effectively utilizes the rear deck and trunk space of most sedan type vehicles.

    Meh

Written By ct4surf, Anaheim CA on Thursday, February 14, 2013

They don't sound great. I've had solo baric, and CVR in my last truck and was not overly impressed. An audio shop talked me into this, I agreed because of the price. I listen to mostly metal, and they dont sound so great. They are in a truck-tuned box, with ample airspace, but just sound mediocre to me. I will be selling these and going with JL.
    Pros:
    cheap, hits clean
    Cons:
lack of range, can't seem to handle rolling bass with any kind of volume.

This is the first sub I,ve had in a long time. I've always had at least two twelves and was hoping that this ten would give me something even close to what I was used to. I have to say although I've only got 125 total watts mono pushing it, it hits a lot harder than I expected. For the price this sub gives more than I could ask for I will probably be getting a four channel amp to boost my mids and highs so I can balance it out. If your looking for a good intro level sub this kicker is definitly the way to go. Very impressed with a very good product!
    Pros:
Whole lot of bass for a very reasonable price.
    Cons:
    None so far

    10" of pounding perfection

I haven't had "big tunes" for quite some years now. Back then I had two 10" Bazookas in a standard box with 300 watts going to them. They sounded good, but this kicker hits so hard that just one of these is comparable to my old set up. Only have had this sub going for a few weeks so far, but I think this one will endure much of what you throw at it.

I bought these subs to replace MTX Thunder 4500 that one blew out in 2 years. These subs kick ass, they have a lower rms than the MTXs yet sound louder ,clearer, and more accurate.I have used kicker amps before and know its a quality product. These subs blew me away, I would highly recomend them to anyone, for the price its a great buy!

    Great Sub, Even Better Price

Written By Anonymous, Alabama on Wednesday, April 25, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So i started off with Kicker by taking a shot in the dark when getting my sound system first put in my car. I had a 10" kicker in a shallow wedge box powered by a 300 Watt Polk Audio amp. It hit pretty hard but it was hard to hear when it was in the trunk. I decided to pick up a dual 10" box and ordered another one of these subs to put in there to see if it helped at all; the difference is amazing.

To give a benchmark, with one sub i would set the volume to about 28 on my head unit and set the sub volume to 6 (out of 10) to get a little bit of thump.

Now I have the sub volume set at -2 and the volume at 15 and the car is thumping. Any louder and the trunk vibrates uncontrollably.

I have had the one kicker for almost a year now and both for a little over a day and I can say without a doubt they are some of the best bang for the buck subwoofers on the market. I have friends with the classic 2 12's and 600 watt amps and their systems just don't sound as good or as clean. This sub has performed well on any genre or volume of music I have thrown its way.
    Pros:
-Hits all frequencies well -Sounds very clean -Hits just about as hard as you want it to -The price of course -Hasn't gone out on me yet and I don't foresee it going out anytime soon.
    Cons:
    -None so far

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this as a replacement sub for my sons system in his Silverado that blew the sub speaker. This speaker was an excellent choice to compliment the system that is in the truck. The base is nice and tight and sounds much more integrated than the previous speaker that was in it. I would highly recommend this for single cab truck applications, sound is excellent. We had to change some of the settings due to the fact that this speaker hits really hard! As a plus the speaker looks really good as well.

I have always used kicker subs, I got these and they are even better than the
older ones that I had. I was a little worried when I put these in because I used
an old 50 watt per channel amp that I got in high school, ( I graduated in
1993.) These Kickers rock I even had to turn the base on the stereo all the way
    down, very good speakers!!!

I really wasn't going to buy new subwoofers but these were too good of a deal to pass up. Installed them in my GMC 2010 Sierra & they totally blew away my 10" Kenwood sub & old 10" Kicker sub that I had in the truck previously with the same amp (Punch 75.2 that is about 10-12 years old). I also installed the Kicker DS600 into all 4 doors. This is now the best the sounding system I have ever had in a vehicle. Love them!
