Our take on the Bass Blockers

If you like it loud, protect your speakers from bass distortion and enjoy cleaner sound with Bass Blockers. Each Bass Blocker handles up to 50 watts RMS with a 6 dB per octave roll-off. You'll find some general guidelines below for matching Bass Blockers to speaker size. For smaller speakers (3-1/2"s, 4"x6"s, 4"s), the 600 Hz Bass Blockers work well with low-powered systems, while the 800 Hz Blockers are a better choice for high-power applications.

Speaker Size Cut-off Frequency

6-1/2", 5"x7"/6"x8" — 150 Hz
5", 5-1/4" — 300 Hz
3-1/2", 4", 4"x6" — 600 Hz (low power)
3-1/2", 4", 4"x6" — 800 Hz (high power)

These models come fitted with easy-to-use quick-slide connectors that make installation a cinch. There's no splicing or crimping — just slide one of the Bass Blocker's connectors onto your Crutchfield speaker harness and the other Bass Blocker connector onto your speaker's positive terminal.

Cut-off points are at 4 ohms. If you use 8-ohm speakers, the cut-off point is half the listed frequency.

Note: The .250 spade terminals on these Bass Blockers won't connect to the terminals on some car speakers. If your speakers use a different terminal, we recommend that you buy a 10-pack of female quick slides that you can splice onto the Bass Blockers.

Features

Overview: Bass Blockers stop speaker distortion caused by excessive bass relative to a speaker's bass output capability. They are especially useful with small diameter speakers and tweeters. Bass Blockers are typically installed right before the positive speaker input terminal, in-line with the positive speaker lead.

Easy Installation: To install a Bass Blocker, slip the female connector of the bass blocker onto the positive speaker terminal, and plug the male connector into the speaker lead. If you don't want to use the terminals, cut them off, cut the speaker lead at a convenient location close to the speaker, then splice the Bass Blocker into the positive speaker lead and insulate the connections. Bass blockers are not directional, so the orientation of the Bass Blockers on the positive speaker leads is not important.

Note: The .250" spade terminals on these Bass Blockers won't connect to the terminals on some car speakers. If your speakers use a different terminal,  we recommend that you buy a 10-pack of female quick slides to splice on the Bass Blockers.

Slope: The roll off rate is 6dB/octave, and the frequency each bass blocker is rated for (i.e. 150, 300, 600, 800Hz, etc.) is the point where response has been lowered by 3dB.

Model 2 ohms 4 ohms 8 ohms Wire Color
127BB150A2 300Hz 150Hz 75Hz Brown
127BB300A2 600Hz 300Hz 150Hz Blue
127BB600A2 1200Hz 600Hz 300Hz Green
127BB800A2 1600Hz 800Hz 400Hz Yellow

Power Handling: Each Bass Blocker is capable of handling up to 50 watts RMS.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

they seem to do its job. It keeps the bass distortion to zero at high volumes.
Pros:
The spade connectors makes it easy to plug right in.
Cons:
Wished the connectors had insulation on them. Used electrical tape to make sure it does not inadverdently grounds out.

Not an out-of-the-box fit.

Written By FrankC, Tucson, AZ on Thursday, January 03, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These went on the front 4 inch Polk speakers on my 99 Jeep Wrangler. The connectors didn't fit exactly on the speaker harness. They were too small to fit. had to cut off one connector and crimp another one on. Other than that, straight forward install.
Pros:
Appear to work.
Cons:
Original connector didn't fit on speakers.

Great except for one thing

Written By SandroD, Upstate, NY on Saturday, December 15, 2012

I used this with a set of Focal Polyglass speakers in a Scion IQ. It was pain to install because the male connector would not fit into the wire harness provided by Crutchfield. It is just a little too big. I remember doing a similar install years ago and i ran into the same problem. I ended up having to splice the wires together. The end result is amazing. It definitely allowed my speakers to shine with its mids and highs. I would have given it 5 stars if i didn't have to alter the wires.
Pros:
It works as expected
Cons:
Does not fit on the provided wire harness. Alteration is necessary.

Must have for aftermarket systems including subs.

Written By Sergio W, Colorado Springs, CO on Friday, December 14, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just got these in today and I must say they are amazing! For being a cheap passive crossover solution, these really help those who want more out of their aftermarket speakers complimented with a subwoofer system. I was able to turn up the bass setting higher to send more bass to the sub whilst keeping harmful bass frequencies from my speakers. The 150 hz cut-off is perfect because a good amount of bass the speaker can handle at loud volumes are still being played through the full range speakers. Now I can really turn the volume up without distortion from unproper bass being fed to the full range speakers. The difference is almost unreal. Hard to explain in words, but "Music Heaven" has been reached in my car. :P Highly recommend these for anyone with a subwoofer system in their car, or anyone with aftermarket speakers, or a combination of both.
Pros:
Cheap, Makes a world of a better audio difference, Lets full-range speakers handle frequencies they can handle at louder volumes for cleaner, crisper, distortion free(in some cases), rich sound. Easy to install.
Cons:
Male slide terminal didnt fit my current female terminal, but not a problem since splicing a wire is very easy.

They do the JOB!

Written By Tommy, Sacramento on Tuesday, December 04, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My Pioneer Deck didn't have the High Pass Filter feature, so I bought 2 pairs of these bad boys. They eliminated the low frequency on the front and rear speakers which is exactly what I wanted. I let my Sub take care of the Low Frequencies while the main speakers bring out the Mids and Highs with no distortion. Sounds really clean now.
Pros:
Easy Install and they work very well.
Cons:
None.

keep it simple stupid: speaker insurance and sound enhancer

Written By TeamROCKIT, Morgantown, WV on Wednesday, May 30, 2012

2006 Ram 1500 Quad Cab upgrade. Installed 3.5 Rockfords in the dash along with recommended 600hz lockers. Incredible! They do what the say. Will be making another purchase of 300hz for my 5.25 Rockfords. WOULD RECOMMEND to any and every one wanting some simple protection and sound enhancement.

NOTE: modification may be needed to fit some applications. If this is too difficult or unacceptable, you need not buy or complain.

SUCK IT UP!
Pros:
Simple... Enough said.
Cons:
None

I was adding a powered subwoofer to my system so I didn't need low bass at my other speakers. These are easy to install and I guess they do their job. My system sounds great.

Plug and play (04 mustang) unlike previous reviews. Would recommend this product to anyone.
Pros:
This product performed well above my expectations. These Bass Blockers allowed me to keep my factory tweeters while powering with the HU only, no amp. Exactly what I wanted them to do! Crystal clear sound.
Cons:
No cons, this product simply works!

Works

Written By Tom, Middletown, CT on Saturday, July 09, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a Ford Explorer with NAV and Video from the factory so I want to keep my head unit and I'm not in the frame of mind to install an amp. at the moment, so the base blockers worked magic on my front Boston Acoustic 5-1/4 components.

The head unit has limited bass control and it was not filtering out low bass and even the Boston's can only handle so much before sounding like total s*#@. I tried the 300HZ as indicated but it took to much bass out so i landed with the 150HZ. They sound great, clear upper and midrange with to proper amount of lows. Two complaints:

1. The quick connectors are too wide (they don't fit) and you need to modify

2. The base blockers don't have any marking on them so if you get two types don't mix them up as it's hard to tell the difference. Yeah the wire color different but if you forget what was what you need to perform a sound check to figure it out.

They work, but...

Written By Malcolm, Atlanta on Thursday, June 16, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Once installed they work fine, but getting them in was a process even though it should be simple. 1st, as others mentioned the terminals don't fit a lot of speakers. In our vehicle we have 3 sets of speakers all different brands and the terminals didn't fit any so all had to be modified.

2nd, the solder joint between the wire and the component can be weak. On 1 of them i was installing both sides popped of as i flexed the wires to install the speaker so I had to take it out and re-solder.
