Dual

Our take on the Dual HDM90

by Zak Billmeier

You don't have to choose between great sound and your local radio station, since a growing number of your favorite stations now use HD Radio technology to improve their AM and FM broadcasts with better sound quality and static-free reception.

Connect the HDM90 HD Radio tuner to your compatible Dual or Axxera car stereo, tune to a participating station, and discover the difference. You'll enjoy FM that's almost CD quality, and AM that's as clear as traditional FM. Many HD Radio stations also broadcast text information, so you'll be able to see artist info and song titles appearing on the display of your stereo. Even better, HD Radio is free.

Get "tagging"
You can "tag" songs that you hear on an HD Radio broadcast for future purchase. Connect your iPod® to your Dual stereo, and the songs will show up in a playlist called "Tagged". The next time you sync your iPod, you can buy the songs you want from the iTunes Music Store.

Multicasting
In addition to their usual offerings, many HD Radio stations broadcast one or more extra channels, featuring different content. The HDM90 lets you tune in to these "multicast" channels, giving you access to a much greater range of listening choices.

This tuner currently works with Axxera's XDMA7800 and X2DMA500 CD receivers.

Highlights:

  • add HD Radio reception to your compatible Dual stereo
  • tune in to "multicast" channels
  • iTunes tagging
  • dimensions: 5-1/2"W x 7/8"H x 3-9/16"D
  • warranty: 1 year
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

    Features

Overview: The Dual HDM90 is a hideaway add-on HD Radio tuner module, designed to receive high-quality HD Radio broadcasts for select HD Radio Ready Dual in-dash head units. It connects to the Dual head unit's proprietary HD Radio Ready port and your vehicle's antenna cable.

Note: The HDM90 HD Radio Tuner receives both analog & digital AM/FM radio stations.

Compatibility: The Dual HDM90 HD Radio Tuner is compatible with all Dual HD Radio Ready in-dash head units. Compatible models include (as of August 2011):

    • XDMA7800

HD Radio Technology: HD Radio technology, where available, offers higher quality sound than conventional analog broadcasts and receives text data. HD Radio provides FM broadcasts that are equal to CD sound quality and AM broadcasts that are as good as analog FM stereo broadcasts. Best of all, HD Radio is free and requires no additional subscription fees.

Note: Right now there are about 2,000 radio stations broadcasting using digital HD Radio technology in the U.S. To find HD Radio stations in your area, visit the HD Radio website (HDRadio.com).

HD Seek Mode: HD Seek mode enables the tuner to skip over analog stations and tune to only HD Radio stations.

Song/Artist Information: Many HD Radio stations broadcast text information, so you'll be able to see artist info and song titles appearing on the display of your compatible Dual in-dash head unit.

Multicasting: Multicasting allows stations to broadcast multiple stations on one analog frequency. This means that one radio station can be transmitting several programs at the same time with a digital signal. This unit supports up to 3 multicasting channels (HD1, HD2, HD3) from a single FM station. Multicast channels can be set as a preset radio station (1-6- just like analog radio stations.

Note: Only FM radio stations have multicast channels.

iTunes Tagging: iTunes tagging allows you to "tag" the song that is playing on an HD radio station and save it on a connected iPod. The next time that iPod syncs with iTunes, that song and its details will appear in the iTunes store. With iTunes tagging, you will never forget your favorite song on the radio.

Note: This function can be operated with the following iPod/iPhone models - iPod nano (3rd/4th/5th/6th gen), iPod classic (80/120/160GB), iPod touch (1st/2nd/3rd/4th gen), and iPhone (2G/3G/3GS/4).

2-Wire Installation: The Dual HDM90 features two connection ports (Head Unit Out/Antenna In) and requires only two cable connections. The HDM90 plugs into the HD Radio port on the back of your compatible Dual HD Radio Ready head unit. The antenna cable from the Dual head unit is disconnected and plugs into the antenna port on the HD Radio tuner.

    • Head Unit Out: Proprietary 9-pin connector with a 58" mini-DIN cable which plugs into the HD Radio input of your compatible Dual head unit.
    • Antenna In: Female Motorola antenna port with a 44" antenna extension cable for connecting your vehicle's antenna cable. Unplug the antenna from your Dual head unit and connect it to the antenna connection of the HD Radio tuner.

Mounting: The Dual HDM90 features integrated mounting flanges and comes with two mounting screws to mount the HD Radio tuner in your vehicle.

    Hs radio with dual

Written By Anonymous, Hayward, CA on Sunday, December 02, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It was a very easy install with the dual xml8150 head unit. Just plug and play, very straight forward. In terms of the HD quality vs analog, it is great as you get non of the static and it sounds crisp. Another good point is the unit now displays the song info as well as the station. Tagging feature allows me to just bookmark songs I like on the radio and look them up on iTunes.

Here comes the con: if reception is an issue, whether it's the location or using shorty antennas, all the features I just said will not work. Worst part is that the radio will sound fragmented as the stereo switch between analog and Hd radio constantly.

I guess my next project it to get better reception but there isn't much good info on this online...

Lastly, I wish there is an app on my iPod that can use the digital signal from the radio to display album art directly to my iPod when connected to the dock.
    Pros:
Crisp sound when good signal Tagging function Album and station info
    Cons:
Reception issue causes fragmented and delayed sounds
