Why would I need an iPodĀ® adapter?

An iPod adapter allows you to connect your iPod to your car stereo, then access your playlists with your stereo's controls - a great idea for several reasons. One, you can scroll through your song titles on your stereo's larger display, instead of squinting down at your iPod. Two, you can route the adapter cable to your glove compartment or center console, so your iPod stays safely out of sight. Three, the iPod adapter keeps your iPod fully charged, so it's ready to rock when you leave your car. And last of all, some adapters bypass your iPod's internal digital-to-analog converter, using your stereo's superior DAC to turn your files back into music.

Our take on the USA Spec iPod® Interface for Honda

by Zak Billmeier

You can take it with you. Just because you've got a factory radio in your Honda or Acura, doesn't mean you have to leave your iPod at home, along with the hours and hours of music it contains. Just install USA Spec's iPod interface — it not only allows you to listen to all your favorite tunes through your car's speakers, it even lets you control song and playlist selections right from your radio. And with your iPhone® connected, you can even stream music from popular Internet services like PANDORA®, Livio Radio, iHeartRadio, and more.

Just mount the compact interface box in a hidden location in your vehicle, and connect the adapter cable to your compatible Honda or Acura factory radio. Plug your iPod into the interface — you can control volume, source, song selection, and up to five different play lists right from the radio. It'll even display song info when used with newer vehicles equipped with a satellite-ready factory stereo. And the interface charges most iPods while connected.

You'll get a handy auxiliary input for connecting other sources, such as a satellite radio or another type of MP3 player.

Please enter your vehicle information and check Installation Details to find out if this adapter is compatible with your vehicle. You can also call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 for help.

Compatibility Note: Be sure to check "Hands-on Research" for specific iPod model compatibility with this iPod adapter.

Notes:

  • *The iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), and iPhone 5 will require the Apple Lightning to 30-pin adapter (sold separately).
  • Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

Control Modes: The iPod interface adapter features the following control modes:

  • Playlist Mode: You can create up to 6 favorite mobile playlist then use your radio's in-dash CD changer or XM radio controls to access and control your playlists.
  • Direct Mode: Gives you complete control of your iPod while it is connected to the factory radio. Your iPod is not locked out while connected to the radio and you are able to manually access your complete iPod content. The Radio still can adjust song up/down random or shuffle play but you can manually control your iPod and select any playlist, genre or Artist of your choice.
  • Folder Mode: You can access three folders (Playlist, Artist, and Album) on your iPod from your Honda/Acura radio to search for your music.

Note: When using the factory radio's XM controls, the iPod will be controlled through XM preset 1, while your factory XM radio will be controlled through XM preset 2.

App Streaming (in Direct Mode): Direct mode also lets you listen to the sound from your iPhone's downloaded music apps (such as Pandora, iHeart Radio, SiriusXM, etc.) through your factory head unit & speakers. You will continue to control your iPhone's apps & view song/artist information from its touchscreen.

Note: Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. You will also need applicable music service accounts.

iPod Text: The USA SPEC PA15-HON2 allows iPod text on all compatible Honda/Acura factory radios that have a satellite button but do not have navigation (factory navigation systems do not support iPod text display using this adapter). Artist name and song title will be displayed on the factory radio.

Auxiliary Input: In addition to the iPod input on the PA15-HON2 there is an auxiliary input (RCA) for use with another source, such as a DVD system, satellite radio, etc. This aux input can be used with or without the iPod connected. To use the auxiliary input on the interface, dip switch #1 is set to the "On" position.

Nice while it worked

Written By Jim from Texas, Houston on Sunday, May 12, 2013

I'll give it a 2 but that's generous. Installed in my Honda S2000, it was a tight fit. Worked well while it did. After about 6 months the left channel started getting fuzzy. After about 9 months it was difficult to get started, but worked once it finally connected. After about a year it destroyed my iPod Classic and quit working. That was about a year and a half ago. Too expensive to even bother to fix and USA Spec isn't really interested in product support.
Pros:
Works great for 6 months. Relatively easy to set up.
Cons:
Quits working after 6-12 months and destroys your iPod when it does.

Fails after 1 year

Written By Greg, Colorado Springs on Monday, April 01, 2013

This product failed after one year. USA SPEC says too bad, I can RMA it and for $75.00 they will fix and send back. already spent too much on it. Try a different company, maybe have better luck.
Pros:
Fine while it worked.
Cons:
Fails after one year.

beats replacing the Head unit

Written By Zaeemrk46, Yonkers NY on Tuesday, February 26, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation was easy except for a dumb mistake I did. I connected the cable to the radio and then tried snaking it. Well, the wire when connected to the car is energized and when I snaked it to the glove box I hit a piece of metal which caused the cable to start melting (yes smoke and couple of the wires melted). I ended up calling USA SPEC and they sold me a replacement cable (CAS-H2y). Once I got it, I redid the installation but this time I snaked the cable before connecting it to the radio. Worked like a charm. Text display worked but whenever I listen to Arabic songs the display shows "????????? ?????????" this is not a complain the display is a simple LED display, I'm just giving my experience.
Pros:
Works great and now the XM/AUX button on the radio has a purpose.
Cons:
The Crutchfield instructions did say to disconnect the negative line from the battery to avoid what I did, my fault. But, usually when you design any plug and socket you make it that the socket is what has the power to avoid any kid of shorting out. So the cable coming from the radio should be the socket and the unit should have the plug. Especially that this unit installs in a car which has lots of vibrations and even after installation the wire can come out and energized pins can touch ground.

Pros:
easy install & great sound. No need to remove the radio as the plug was easily accessible under the radio. Check out install video's on YouTube for more information.

USA Spec iPod® Interface for Honda

Written By Mike L, Rochester, NY on Sunday, January 13, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's a decent solution, though it took a lot longer to install and configure than was suggested by the Crutchfield rep. The instructions included with the device are written with the assumption that you have Nav or a CD changer - not until you get to the very end does it indicate what the configuration for a single-CD radio is. And even then, it is only parenthetically mentioned. In the end though, it worked out and it does what I want it to.
Pros:
Integrates with the factory radio; charges the iPhone; allows playing of music and podcasts
Cons:
Doesn't integrate with speakerphone (when you use speakerphone, sound comes out of the iPhone); doesn't allow use of both an iPhone and a different source without reconfiguring the DIP switches.

Caution With iPhone 5

Written By Fred W., Canton, GA on Friday, January 11, 2013

This is a follow up review. Upon installing the USA Spec ipod interface, my son's iPhone 5 only played through it for a day, then it stopped working. Upon further research, we have learned that this phone is not compatible with the ipod adapter. Not sure why it worked, even for a day. We believe the issue is with the phone and not the interface. It appears that in order to make the unit work, a "Lightning to 30 pin" adapter (fits between the phone and supplied ipad cable) is required. This item costs approximately $30.00. We plan to pick one up this weekend and give it a try. Will post again with results. We called Crutchfield initially thinking the interface we received was defective. They promptly sent out a replacement ...great Crutchfield service. Unfortunately, we had the same results with the new unit. The 3 star ranking is because I feel that we should have been notified up front of the potential incompatibility issue. Stay tuned for a future update.
Pros:
Appears to be a well built item. Fantastic Crutchfield customer service!!
Cons:
Apparent incompatibility issue with iPhone 5 w/o modification.

Bad Experience

Written By Rob C, Hartford, CT on Sunday, January 06, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Unfortunately, I was unable to use this product. I had a rather difficult time removing the trim ring around the stereo and when removing it, the clips ended up falling into the dashboard, which resulted in a painfull search. Anyway, once I removed the stereo, I followed the schematics provided, only to find that the factory plug would not mate up with the one on the I-Pod adapter. Needless to say, I had to button things up without installing the unit. I don't understand, after specifying my vehicle when ordering, they send me the wrong unit. I plan on returning it for a full refund...Wouldn't have guessed this would happen with such a reputable company like Crutchfield!

Great iPod interface

Written By DavidA, Athens, AL on Saturday, January 05, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the Honda iPod interface for my daughter. I had looked at a few other options, but liked that USA Spec iPodĀ® Interface for Honda maintained control through the existing Honda System. She just left on a trip and had really made good use of it. She mainly uses the interface for her iPhone. Works great! This was a great Crutchfield experience as expected. Technical Support was of great help prior to making my purchase.
Pros:
Great interface product.
Cons:
Can not display song titles on existing Honda system - Not XM or Nav.

Wow....Great Item

Written By Fred W., Canton, GA on Thursday, December 27, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've purchased several items from Crutchfield and again they recommended an excellent item. We were looking for a way to allow my son to use his ipod in his 2004 Honda Accord with the factory radio without going to the trouble and expense of putting in a new head unit with associated hardware. The USA Spec interface was just the ticket. I ordered the product about two weeks before Christmas and we received it in two days. Christmas day we had the family over and with the help of my brother in law, who is a Honda technician, we had the adapter installed inside of 30 minutes. My son's car does not have the XM option so the included adapter for cars with XM wasn't needed. We simply plugged the adapter into the factory connection located on the bottom of the radio, drilled a small hole in the back of the storage compartment to allow the ipod cable to pass through and that was it! The grin on my son's face when he turn on his first song of head banging crap was definitely worth the little cost and time of adding the ipod interface. Well done Crutchfield. I'll be in touch when we are ready for our next upgrade.
Pros:
Simple plug & play installation. Works exactly as described.
Cons:
I'm regret waiting so long to order.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered this because we were sick of paying for XM and getting the same songs over and over. After placing the order, I check out a couple of youtube videos to get some tips on installing the device. Once it arrived, it took thirty minutes out of my morning to perform the entire operation of removing the car panels, taking out the radio, installing the wiring and re-installing the radio plus paneling. Now we are XM free and the device works as advertised.
Pros:
Really Easy to Install Artist/Album/Songs are easily to control with XM display Great Price
Cons:
Could use a youtube video for installing the device. i found one but the guy was using a competing product.

Installed in a 2006 Honda Accord EX
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit works as promised. It saved me the hassle of replacing my factory stereo and the small fortune it would have cost. It was really easy to install, my only complaint would be that the instructions provided with this tell you that you need to plug the wire harness into the back of the factory stereo which was not the case. It had to be plugged into the bottom and didn't find that out until after the pain of unplugging it.
Pros:
Charges the Ipod, you can still use the stereo controls on the steering wheel and able to control the ipod with its touch screen
Cons:
None that I can think of.

Very good product for streaming Pandora from an Android phone to my factory Honda Accord stereo. I-Pod connectivity works well too. Search You Tube videos for a little more installation help if you need it. I was getting static but I turned off all bass boost and range compression on my phone and now it works great.

Works with 2006 Honda Pilot and BT35-HON

Written By Pilot06-Accord01, Antioch, CA on Friday, August 03, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Added USA-Spec BT35-HON and PA15-HON2 to XM ready factory radio on 2006 Honda Pilot w/o nav. Radio trim panel removal was straightforward, but to install BT35-HON mic over the rear-view mirror, I had to remove the A-pillar panel, which was challenging. To remove A-pillar panel, first remove door weather stripping, then pull hard to remove A-pillar panel. There are 2 clips in the A-pillar panel, expect to break the the top clip of the A-pillar panel, so buy one beforehand (although, once you push back the weather stripping, the A-pillar stays in place without the top clip).

Connect the BT35-HON first. Connect CAS-H35 cable to the XM slot on factory radio and BT35-HON. Then connect CAS-H2Y cable to CAS-H35 cable and PA15-HON2. BT35-HON dip switches should all be set to off. PA15-HON2 dip switches should be 1 & 3 on and 2 & 4 off. Connect mic to BT35-HON. Connect iPOD cable to PA15-HON2 (purchase 3.5mm to 2 RCA cable separately if you want to use the aux connection).

PA15-HON2 has excellent sound quality. PA15-HON2 supports iPOD text and can be controlled with either radio or iPOD directly.

Initial pairing with Motorola Droid 2 Global phone with BT35-HON took a few tries, then it was smooth. BT35-HON does NOT support text, there is NO caller ID. The BT35-HON rings over the factory radio and announces the phone number. Calls can be answered with the radio or phone. Outgoing calls must be made with phone. Excellent call and bluetooth audio streaming quality.
Pros:
Decent price. Good sound quality. Works with BT35-HON. Allows you to keep factory radio (you lose sub-woofer and steering wheel controls if you replace factory radio).
Cons:
iPOD radio control is not intuitive, better to control iPOD directly than with radio.

Works Sometimes

Written By Anonymous, Glendora, CA on Friday, July 13, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The installation looked tricky to me so I had it professionally installed at Best Buy. The product worked very well for the first 3-4 months. Now I have had the product for about 5 months and it does not work well at all. When I plug in my device (iPhone) it often does not detect or start playing music. Sometimes the music will start playing on my phone but only come out of the speaker on my phone. I can usually get it to play music after 2-3 tries of plugging it in over and over. Also, sometimes the music stops playing if I pick up or move my phone. I wish it still worked as well as it did at first!
Pros:
Worked well at first and sound quality was good!
Cons:
Is very finicky within 6 months of use.

USA Spec iPodĀ® Interface for Honda - 2007 Honda Pilot w/XM

Written By Rob, Minneapolis, MN on Sunday, June 10, 2012
Installed in a 2007 Honda Pilot
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far, I've two of these from two different retailers, to no avail. I brought both to two different install centers and neither have had any luck getting it to work. I even called USA Spec directly last week after the first debacle, just to get an understanding of whether they knew of variability in the factory stereos for my make/model/trim that has caused installation issues in the past. Of course I can't rate this thing more than 1 star given my experience. A let down; we are headed to Michigan on Thursday (700 miles, one way). I guess I'll be stuck with CDs (what are those?)
Pros:
None that I can list
Cons:
Simply doesn't work

This is an excellent product and very easy to install. Thanks to Crutchfield's detailed instructions for removing the radio the installation was easy.
Pros:
Easy to install.
Cons:
Had some trouble with cables coming loose from control box. I used some zip ties to hold the cables in place. No problems form that point.
