Why would I need an iPodĀ® adapter?

An iPod adapter allows you to connect your iPod to your car stereo, then access your playlists with your stereo's controls - a great idea for several reasons. One, you can scroll through your song titles on your stereo's larger display, instead of squinting down at your iPod. Two, you can route the adapter cable to your glove compartment or center console, so your iPod stays safely out of sight. Three, the iPod adapter keeps your iPod fully charged, so it's ready to rock when you leave your car. And last of all, some adapters bypass your iPod's internal digital-to-analog converter, using your stereo's superior DAC to turn your files back into music.

Our take on the USA Spec iPod® Interface for GM

by Tim Sprinkle

You can take it with you! Just because you've got a factory radio in your GM car, doesn't mean you have to leave your iPod (and the hours and hours of music it contains) at home. Just install USA SPEC's iPod interface — it not only allows you to listen to all your favorite tunes through your car's speakers, it even lets you control song and playlist selections right from your radio. And with your iPhone® connected, you can even stream music from popular Internet services like PANDORA®, Livio Radio, iHeartRadio, and more.

Just mount the compact interface box in a hidden location in your vehicle, and connect the adapter cable to the CD changer input on your compatible 1994-02 GM factory radio. Plug your iPod into the interface — you can control volume, source, song selection, and up to five different play lists right from the radio. Or switch to "Direct Mode" and use your iPod to access all your songlists. The interface also charges your iPod while it's connected.

Please enter your vehicle information or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to find out if this adapter is compatible with your vehicle. As the iPod interface uses the CD changer port, any existing changer that you have must be disconnected.

Compatibility Note: Be sure to check "Hands-on Research" for specific iPod model compatibility with this iPod adapter.

    Notes:

    • *The iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), and iPhone 5 will require the Apple Lightning to 30-pin adapter (sold separately).
    • Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

Control Modes: The iPod interface adapter features the following control modes.

    • Playlist Mode: You can create up to 5 favorite mobile playlist then use your radio's CD changer controls to access and control your playlist.
    • Direct Mode: Gives you complete control of your iPod while it is connected to the factory radio. Your iPod is not locked out while connected to the radio and you are able to manually access your complete iPod content. The Radio still can adjust song up/down random or shuffle play but you can manually control your iPod and select any playlist, genre or Artist of your choice.
    • Dual Mode: Combines features of Direct Mode and Playlist Mode. You can create and access your favorite mobile playlist or directly access all your iPod content manually on your iPod. Your iPod displays song title information and iPod is not locked, so the iPod can be operated manually at all times. (May be referred to as Hybrid Mode in some manuals)

App Streaming (in Direct Mode): Direct mode also lets you listen to the sound from your iPhone's downloaded music apps (such as Pandora, iHeart Radio, SiriusXM, etc.) through your factory head unit & speakers. You will continue to control your iPhone's apps & view song/artist information from its touchscreen.

Note: Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. You will also need applicable music service accounts.

Playlist Names: In order for the adapter/factory radio to recognize a playlist, it should be named GM2... through GM6... Text can follow the GM name and number, such as GM4_artistname or GM3-jazz. For a given disc slot (2-6), if there is no playlist named GM followed by that number, that disc slot will play the first available playlist on the iPod (the second blank slot will play the second available playlist, etc).

Auxiliary Input: In addition to the iPod input on the PA11-GM45 there is an auxiliary input (RCA) for use with another source, such as a DVD system, satellite radio, etc. The aux input is accessed at disc 6 track 1 using the factory radio controls. This aux input can be used with or without the iPod connected.

Playlist Mode Controls: In Playlist Mode the iPod is controlled using the CD Changer commands on the factory radio. Use the Radio's Disc Select controls to access the 5 custom mobile playlists, the Play All mode, or the auxiliary input. Track select, forward and backward, works just like on a CD. Other commands include shuffle play, scan (plays first 10 seconds of each track), Fast Track Search (skips forward or backward 10 tracks), and Fast Forward/Fast Reverse within a song (available in shuffle mode only).

Battery Charge: The PA11-GM45 charges iPod battery when connected. Charging stops after 1 hour of non-use to prevent draining the vehicle's battery.

CD Changer Port: The adapter uses the factory radio's CD Changer port so if the vehicle has an existing outboard CD Changer it must be disconnected.

Pause: When a non-iPod source is selected on the radio (AM/FM/Cass/CD) the iPod pauses.

Resume: If the iPod is not disconnected after use, it will resume playing where it left off when you restart the vehicle.

Got 2 adapters, both flakey. Avoid!!!

Written By JasonD, San Jose, CA on Thursday, August 04, 2011
Installed in a 1999 Pontiac Firebird
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Have had a pretty horrible experience with this adapter, which I suspect is due to poor quality control by the manufacturer. The first adapter I bought worked well for the first few days but then the left channel audio started cutting out, replaced by a clicking sound. Crutchfield sent me a replacement adapter kit. I installed the cables and adapter, and found that the adapter software was very different than the software on my 1st adapter, which made it nearly unusable. I swapped in the 1st adapter and things worked great. I deduced the left channel issue was due to a bad cable. However, a month later, the left channel cutout issue is back and will not go away. I am going to rip out this stupid adapter and burn it.

2002 35th Anniversary SS Camaro Install

Written By Patrick, Fernandina Beach, FL on Tuesday, November 09, 2010

The install of this product on my camaro convertible with the Monsoon stereo was fairly easy with the instructions that came with the device. I found a way to conceal the device in the glove compartment, as it is said it was important to get to if I needed to reset it. All of the cords were long enough for me to route from the stereo to the box in the glove compartment back through my center console and up through the ash tray. Needless to say, it is fairly well hidden. I have seen a delay time between startup of the car and the syncing of the device, but it is no longer then a few seconds. The steering wheel controls work marvelously with my iPhone 4G. I found the best way to use it is put the CD changer to disc 6 which allow for hi-bred control, ie with iPhone and steering wheel controls, this allows me to pick the playlist and then cycle through with my steering wheel controls.

It is a great product and works extremely well.

USA Spec iPod® Interface for GM

Written By Anonymous, California on Tuesday, September 21, 2010

3 stars becuase of the price and my application. I had to order another adapter for my application and i did not use the radio harness that came with this product at all. So this much for a little white box and an ipod cable and another $30 for the cadillac adapter. If the radio harness adapter was removed and the price lowered to like $80 then it would have been 5 stars for me, but now i have an extra cable i can do nothing with.

It does the job, but has quirks

Written By ethanms, Boston, Ma on Sunday, May 16, 2010
Installed in a 2000 Chevrolet Blazer
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

    2000 Chevy Blazer, iPhone 3GS

    Good:
    - It works--you can play audio, either from your iPod or RCA inputs, via your GM factory radio
    - Cables supplied are good quality, they are also longer than I expected
    - Unit is fairly small--fit easily into a spot behind my radio
    - Configuration is simple--only via 2 DIP switches

    Bad:
    - It's expensive vs. a new head unit--unless you really love your GM radio, think hard about this; there are a lot new head units that are available for not that much more money
    - It pops--when switching "disks" there is a very loud POP from your speakers
    - It's flaky--
*It takes 15-20 seconds to start up, and during that time your iPhone will flash between home screen and "accessory connected" and the display may go blank on the phone until you tap it
*It does something that makes your iPhone battery die faster... yes, it charges when plugged in, but after you unplug your iPhone it will consume battery 4-5X faster then normal ; if you power down iPhone and then back up after using this your phone doesn't discharge as fast ... I don't know why, maybe it starts up a background process that consumes CPU cycles and so runs down the battery, or maybe it gets the iPhone into a weird mode where it doesn't sleep correctly?

Because of the issues above I plan to abandon using the iPod cable with this unit and start using the AUX input connected to the headphone jack of my iPhone.

If I had it to do over again I'd have bought a new head unit

Not Compatible with 3rd Gen iPod

Written By John, Stoneham, MA on Sunday, June 14, 2009
    Installed in a 2000 Chevrolet S10
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The description of this adapter says it works with 3rd generation and newer
ipod, but below that in the actual list of ipods it supports, 3rd gen ipod is not
    listed.

So I bought one anyway. It arrived and was completely whacked out. Nothing
would work. Crutchfield sent out a replacement, and the replacement worked
with a new iPod Nano, and an iPhone 2G. But it wouldn't work with my old
school 3rd Gen iPod. So Im returning both for a full refund. I'm not going to buy
a new iPod when this old one works perfectly fine. Car iPod sit in you center
console, you never even see them or touch them. So it's stupid to replace one
that's not broken. And it's actually very easy to replace the hard drive with a
larger one if this pod's HD every dies. So i'll likely have this iPod for... EVER.

Installed in a 2000 GMC Yukon XL
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was an install for GMC Yukon XL with factory built in CD player and auxiliary tape cassette player. Unplugged negative from battery. Put on p-brake, put in drive to remove dash trim, pressed down plastic clips and slipped out radio. Unplugged wires in back of radio and plugged in new ones. Put the box in the glove and fed wires back through to the glove to plug in box. Easy as 1, 2, 3.

    Good concept, but has bugs

Written By Dan, Austin, TX on Friday, July 11, 2008
Installed in a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

'01 Tahoe, OnStar(deactivated), external factory amp, iPod Nano 3G
firmware 1.1.2; On first connect, USASPEC unit was set to Playlist mode,
and my factory stereo displayed "Err" after being on for around 20 seconds.
Unplugged everything and tried again, same result. Unplugged everything
again, switched to Direct mode, and everything works now. I have the Aux
In enabled and it works great too, but it did not work when the unit was in
Playlist mode. Note: The "Random/RDM" button on the factory radio will
cause weird things to happen. The end result of this product is good: I can
listen to my ipod through the radio with a clean sound connection, and i can
skip to the next song by pressing "Seek -->" on my factory radio. Picking
playlists and turning on random play must still be done directly on the ipod,
but I don't mind. Overall, I'm satisfied because I got it to work but I still
have a fear in the back of my mind that the unit will stop working one day
based on my experience with its bugs and based on other reviews where
people have said their unit stopped working. My car didn't have a CD
changer from the factory, so my stereo doesn't have the "Disc" label on
the "5" preset button. The "5" changes discs (which changes between
ipod and aux in) but I knew that because I have friends with GM CD
changers. The USASPEC manual might mention that "5" changes discs, but
    I'm not sure.

    Worke for a little while

Written By Ryan, Bay Area, CA on Tuesday, May 06, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Really easy to install. Worked great (except for the RF interference was annoying on low songs) for about a week. Then the thing would only recognize the aux input and not the iPod. Which was great if i wanted to listen to my Sirius 24/7.

So I called the AMAZING customer care at Crutchfield.

They sent me another one out right away. Plugged it in and it worked great right off the bat

2 days later it died all the way. No input or iPod!!! All it did was flash the clock on and off. Couldn't even turn on the radio.

Just sent both back for a full refund. Thanks for the help Crutchfield, but the product just isn't up to standards of your company.

    good while it lasted

Written By Jukka, Pittsburgh, PA on Saturday, April 12, 2008
    Installed in a 1998 Chevrolet K Series
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installing the USA Spec iPod interface was very easy. Hook up cables, and
securely mount the interface box in a convenient location. I was using the
interface with both my iPhone, and the AUX connectors, and found the head
unit integration reasonably good. The only, minor annoyance is how the iPod
cable causes the iPhone to suggest the airline mode every time it is connected.

Unfortunately, after using the inteface for approximately one week, it stopped
working for no apparent reason. The technical advice I have received has so far
amounted to, disconnect the cables from the interface box and try different DIP
switch settings, and later, disconnect the wires on the back of the radio to see if
that helps. Apparently these devices are known to randomly lock up, and in my
case, one can wonder if they simply are not rugged enough to withstand the
    automotive environment.

    Extremely Happy

Written By Derek, Tucker, GA on Wednesday, March 05, 2008

Just installed it in my 2002 Yukon XL, still can't believe how easy it was to install.
I'm very happy with Crutchfield for supplying the product as well as a breakdown
of my truck. Made it very easy to install the unit and get it up and running. I
drove around my neighborhood for a few minutes just randomly pulling up songs
to test it out. Thanks Crutchfield, you guys rock!!!!!

USA Spec iPod® Interface for GM

Written By Phil, Overland Park, KS on Sunday, February 03, 2008

Works perfect. Exactly as advertised. Extremely easy to install - 20 minutes total. I bought the unit in order to utilize the AUX port with my cell phone/PDA MP3 player. Great sound. I also tested my son's IPOD. It's even better since the radio controls can operate the IPOD. I may buy an IPOD now......

2002 Chevy Tahoe, Cassette Player in Console, OnStar without Bose

Written By Sean, Pittsburgh, PA on Wednesday, December 05, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I called to order the PA11-GM45 I was on the phone for 10 minutes max, placed my order and received the product in the mail 2 days later. I pulled off my dash cover, clicked the radio out, unplugged the cassette connector, plugged in the cables to the back of my radio, plugged the cassette into the other connector, fed the wire down behind the radio and under the console cup holder. I took me maybe 10 minutes.

I used it with my wife's Ipod Mini and it worked flawlessly. I am getting the Ipod Touch for Christmas and I hope that it works just as smooth.

Seriously if you are somewhat mechanically inclined, this product can be installed from start to finish in less than 20 minutes. The hardest part was feeding the wire down the back of the dash.

    Great implementation with a caveat

Written By erj, Scottsdale, AZ on Tuesday, October 30, 2007

This is why I ordered from Crutchfield... Received the iPod interface for my '02 Chevy crew-cab, installed it in about 15 minutes using the (mostly) excellent instructions. After giving my radio and the iPod about 20 seconds to sync up, worked like a champ, CD-quality sound, I love it! ... for about 3 weeks.

Then it started dropping either the left or right (or even both) channels of the output. Traced the problem to the box or its connections (the instructions said to keep it in a location where you can get to it. Glad I did!) When I would lose a channel I'd tap the box and it would come back immediately. Called Crutchfield tech support today, and they VOLUNTARILY suggested a replacement box be sent, gave me a RA number for my unit with instructions to send mine back when the new one arrives.

I wish all companies were this customer oriented! Will try to update when I get the new box, whether it solves the problem or not.

A few quirks, but still a great option

Written By Bryan, Denver, Colorado on Sunday, August 26, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this unit in a 1997 Pontiac Grand AM with Factory Cassette stereo, which was simple and straight forward. I have been using it for about 6 months. This review will focus on some quirks I've experienced and can reproduce:

    1) Random mode will play a song at random, then a few seconds of the next song in the playlist, then jump to the next random song. This behavior is kind of annoying, so I don't use random mode.

    2) Another quirk, if I don't drive my car for more than 24 hours or so, the stereo looses it's connection to the iPod and I need to physically turn the iPod on by pressing the center button. It's not that big of a deal, and I haven't invested any time to investigate how to resolve this.

    3) Very annoying behavior related to using the RCA inputs. Connect a RCA to 3.5 mm mini plug cable, flip a dip switch and Disc 6 will play whatever you connect your line level input to. This option is perfect for an iPod Shuffle, or if a passenger wants to play DJ with the iPod in hand. The only drawback to this was the unit is extremely susceptible to what I am assuming is static discharge. If I would touch or accidentally brush my hand against the headphone jack connector's exposed metal connections, sometimes the interface would lock up and stop working. I would have to get under the dash and disconnect and reconnect the cable connecting the unit to the stereo to fix this. The manual recommends installing it in an "easy to get to location," in case you have to reset it, and I would agree.

USA Spec is a great product

Written By Scott, Denver, CO on Monday, July 16, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was tired of the RF "noise" when using my DLO Transpod - in general it worked well, but not enough volume, and always fighting radio station overlap. the USA Spec fixed all that - installed in 30 minutes (hardest part was pulling the cable up to the back of the radio - use a string & key and drop it down from the radio hole once the radio is out - then pull cable back up!) - the USA SPec box itself sits under the drink holder (pops out with a little pull - snaps back when you are done), and the cable comes out the side by the drivers foot (there is even a notch to feed the cable through). The only challenge you have is where to put the iPod - I liked the location of the DLO, but for this setup, you have to use a cup holder, or "manufactur" something to stick in your cigarette lighter. Those are all minor compared to the sound you get by pumping the iPod directly to the radio - I love it!! Now I want to upgrade all my speakers - the stock ones are sounding a little tired...........!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have absolutely zero skills in installing anything and this product is a snap to do. It took 1 minute to get the dash cover off, 2 minutes to hook to the back of the car stereo and then 30 minutes to jam everything back in. It worked great from the beginning.

Only suggestion I have is to make sure you have it hooked up correctly before attempting to cram everything back in the dash.

This product is all it is cracked up to be.

    2002 Suburban w/factory am/fm single CD

Installed in a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in less than 20 minutes. I interfaced the unit
with the "line out" jack of my Garmin Street Pilot 2730
GPS (also purhased at Crutchfield) using the aux jack. I have a GXM-30 XM Satellite antenna/radio connected to this GPS. I receive CD quality satellite music, driving directions, weather, and traffic alerts.
Device worked 1st time. Instructions that were provided were correct to the smallest detail. My major problem (about 15 minutes)was finding a place to work the radio to device cable through the dash to my mounting position. I have the ability to now connect an IPOD to the device with minimum effort.

Great Product that Gave life to my old factory head unit

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My factory CD player started skipping. The ridiculous number of commercials on AM and FM meant constant channel flipping. So I decided to eliminate commercials from my life forever.

My factory four speaker head unit was loud and clean sounding but not easy enough to hook up using the Aux interface. It is VERY easy, if you buy this kit.

I decided to remove the dash panel and install the interface myself. Crutchfield's great Customer Support made this easy--without tools, it took 15 minutes. With practice you could do it in 5 minutes. Routing the cable down through the dash took most of the time. Everything snapped together in seconds. A screwdriver is only needed to mount the box, or you could use velcro or a couple of tie wraps to hold it in place.

My iPod car interface has transformed my life. I now have great sounding music and the well laid out factory CD changer controls make operating the iPod fun. I can skip ahead or behind ten (10) songs or one (1), and find any song I want in seconds. Printing out and numbering your playlist's make it easy find songs in a hurry. Eventually you will be able to memorize Disk and Track information to quickly find any song. I've read that newer XM radios factory heads will display the title and artist information. That would make the product perfect.

NOTE: My factory head unit is for a single CD-player. The unlabeled "5" button is used to change iPod playlist's. I labeled it so other drivers will know how to change playlist's.

This product is great and with crutchfields easy to follow installation intructions I had it installed in 20 minutes start to finish. The product works great and the sound quality is second to none. I've had an FM transmitter and had all kinds of problems with reception and fuzzy songs. With the USA Spec interface there is no static and you never have to worry about changing the station or looking for a new one. I'd recommend this product to anyone who listens to their ipod in the car
