What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Our take on the Pioneer TS-SW841D

by Dominic Devito

Pioneer's innovative TS-SW841D 8" subwoofer packs a punch that belies its slender cross-section. Its Air Suspension Control System eliminates the need for a conventional spider structure. Instead, a cushion of locked-in air acts like a spring, providing smooth, precise movement of the woofer. This special design keeps the total depth of the sub comfortably under 3", for bold bass in places regular subwoofers can't fit.

The one-piece die-cast aluminum basket sports a radical fin design that provides extra cooling and rock-solid resonance control. Rugged internal parts, a powerful strontium magnet, and a cone-reinforcing aluminum dust cap round out the package. Pair this sub with a special low-profile enclosure from Pioneer to get the most out of this slender powerhouse.

Highlights:

  • 8" 4-ohm shallow subwoofer
  • carbon and glass fiber reinforced IMPP cone with woven-fiber surround

    Features

Shallow Mount Woofer: Pioneer's Shallow-Mount subwoofers are designed to provide wider installation options for a broad range of vehicles. They can be mounted behind or under the seats of many vehicles. The TS-SW841D has interlaced Carbon/Glass fiber reinforced IMPP (Injection Molded Polypropylene) composite cones. This cone design is lightweight and rigid, resulting in clean, powerful bass response.

Air Suspension System: Rather than using a standard spider to control cone movement, Pioneer created an Air Suspension system; using two cones with a sealed air space between them. The air locked between the main and drive cones creates a spring-like effect between them moving in unison. The dual cone structure maintains better linearity, resulting in consistently clear, powerful, wide ranging bass response. The drive cone also deflects air pressure inside the enclosure, which further contributes to the bass output of the small package.

Cast Aluminum Basket: The one-piece cast aluminum basket assembly holds the motor assembly, cone, and magnet structure securely in place. The benefits of this design include reduced internal stress, superior damping, and increased magnetic efficiency.

Surround: The two cones use three-layer, fiber-woven, M-shaped radial surrounds to attach to the basket and form the Air Suspension System. This design keeps the voice coil centered, even under high power, for clear and powerful bass.

Terminals: The spring compression binding post terminals will accept a pin connector, a single banana plug, or bare wire up to 10 gauge.

    Specifications

Sealed Box Volume: The sealed box sizes recommended by Pioneer range from 0.15 ft³ to 0.5 ft³; within this range the ideal size is 0.4 ft³.

Vented Box Volume: The vented box sizes recommended by Pioneer range from 0.25ft³ to 0.5 ft³; within this range the ideal size is 0.4 ft³. The ideal port size for a 0.4 ft³ enclosure is 2.5" diameter x 6" long.

Single Reflex Bandpass Volume: The bandpass box sizes recommended by Pioneer range from 0.25 ft³ per chamber to 0.4 ft³ per chamber; within this range the ideal size is 0.35 ft³ per chamber. One 3" diameter x 6" long port should be used in an enclosure with 0.35 ft³ chambers.

Infinite-Baffle Operation: The woofer is also optimized for infinite-baffle operation so that it can be installed in a variety of locations, without the need for a dedicated enclosure.

    Killer 'bass up front'

Written By Frank D., Chicago, IL on Friday, June 08, 2012

Solid bass down to at least 50 Hz; perfect for 'bass up front'. I have two of these---one for each channel in stereo--- mounted in the front doors (OEM location for the standard 6-3/4" MB speakers) of my 2010 Hyundai Elantra; they're powered by 440 WRMS/channel courtesy of a bridged Alpine PDX-4.150 amp in bandpass operation from 50 Hz to 150 Hz with sixth order -36 dB/octave filtering at both ends. My 6-3/4" Focal components are installed above the Pioneer subs (tweeters installed in the sail panels) and operate above 150 Hz to beyond audibility.. The result is solid, convincing 'bass up front' and a very high and wide soundstage emanating from above and 'ahead' of the dashboard. With such a setup music sounds just like you hear it live at a concert. IMO this is the BEST if not ONLY WAY to go if you want world class high fidelity and sonic imaging in your ride. Expensive? Yes but worth every penny if you insist on the best.
    Pros:
Relative ease of installation due to small, shallow 'footprint' and enclosure requirement. Solid bass and very high power handling in a sealed enclosure. Bad appearance of the driver's cone and surround.
    Cons:
For best sound requires a small sealed enclosure notwithstanding the fact that this driver can be operated in a 'free air' or infinite baffle application albeit with less power, a higher HP crossover combined with steeper HP crossover filtering.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Huge sound is a small space. Pioneer hit this one out of the park. Installed in a .25 cu.ft. sealed enclosure for my truck and this thing sounds GREAT! Frequency not as low as some but in small areas its it's enough to kick you in the seat. Want some boom in a limited space; then just buy this thing.
    Pros:
    great sound

    Only shallow 8" out there

Written By Womakin, Charleston, WV on Monday, September 27, 2010

Built a system around factory locations in a 2002 Yukon XL. There is a existing buried sealed box which accepts a shallow 8" and about 2.5" depth. Installed the lil Pioneer and he bumps pretty good. At his 120 watts RMS, I might blow him since he is working in a high power/volume setting with 400Watts RMS driving him.. I doubt it though as his SPL (Sound Pressure Level) at 120 watts is pretty high.

I have set my amp crossover at 75 HZ and use the 6 1/2" door speakers down to that level.

The major issue is, according to the pioneer literature provided with the speaker, the 5 db down point is 60HZ. That means the speaker really can't provide low frequency sound at appreciable levels. Especially needed for actually feeling deep bass. This is a dissapointment. I hope sometime soon to invest in a Stealthbox, which should go down at least to 40 HZ (that is a guess on my part).and still would not affect the utility of the vehicle.

I have been building and designing speaker systems as a hobby for years and that is the way I see it. If you must have the shallow, this is it, otherwise run your woofer parameters through a free online box calculator and choose your speaker. I have found I can get just about as low with a 10" as with a 12" and have a smaller box. There are 8" woofers that go significantly lower than this shortstuff albeit with a somewhat larger box.

    Great Little Sub and Cabinet

Written By Jay, Wisconsin on Friday, January 01, 2010

I'm using this Pioneer shallow mount sub in Pioneer's specific box in an older Porsche 911 and am driving it with a vintage power amp delivering 200 watts. It fits neatly in the rear seat footwell (facing up) if I slide the seat forward one notch. I was surprised at it's output for such a small driver and cabinet. It's relatively accurate and punchy with decent low frequency extension. It appears to be very well built and seems to have quite a bit of engineering thought behind it. The 200 watt amplifier output seems to be a good match for this sub to allow for headroom, yet not exceed the physical limitations of this small driver. There are certainly more accurate subwoofers, but they either cost quite a bit more or don't have the shallow mount application ability.

Right out of the box, the sub needs some time to break in and after some hours of playback, the sub smooths out and isn't as peaky in frequency response. Make sure you give the driver some time to break in before passing final judgement on sound quality.

In summary, while this sub is not the ultimate audiophile sub (remember it's price point!), it's a fantastic choice if you are limited in room. I'd highly recommend this sub and it's associated cabinet.

    Shallow pioneer 8"

Written By Anonymous, Kansas on Wednesday, July 29, 2009

This little guy is pretty loud!, I have two of them in a custom box for my
chevy colorado crew cab and it sounds great! I mean for an 8" sub its
pretty good, It's hard to tell if im feeding to much or not enough power to it
though..I am afraid of blowing it but so far so good, If you have the space i
would suggest going for the 10" or 12" for more boom. but all in all a great
    subwoofer!

    Shallow Pioneer

Written By Danner, Kansas on Friday, July 24, 2009

Woah, this little thing can bump. I have 2 of them in a custom made box for my chevy colorado crew cab and i gotta say, it sounds great! I wasn't expecting much out of them because of on how small they were, but woah am i happy! They are a bit pricey but you pay for what you get!! My box was specifically made for these speakers so that might have something to do with it but still im very satisfied with them!
