What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Our take on the Kicker CompVR 07CVR124

by Dominic Devito

It's a tough job but somebody's got to do it. Kicker builds the CompVR round subwoofers to endure the the harsh demands of producing big bass. Each sub houses an injected-molded polypropylene cone and Santoprene™ rubber surround in a high-strength steel basket with plenty of interior venting. Kicker's SoloKon™ cone design looks fantastic while it protects against flexing that can wreck your sub and your sound.

The 07CVR124 12" sub boasts dual 4-ohm voice coils that can manage a heavy power onslaught, while adding more options for wiring up your system. UniPlate construction molds parts of the sub's motor structure together as a single unit to optimize heat transfer, improve accuracy, and extend cone excursion.

Kicker CompVR subs can be used for marine applications, so make some waves with these stellar subwoofers.

Team this sub with a Kicker amp and save
Take away the worry of picking the right amp to power this sub and keep it an all-Kicker package too. This Kicker bass package puts together a Kicker 10DX1000.1 mono sub amp and two of these subs for a hard-hitting bargain bass system.

Note: If you are wiring this DVC sub for lower impedance, make sure that your amp is compatible. Most car amplifiers are stable down to 2 ohms in standard mode, or 4 ohms in bridged operation.

    Features
    Enclosure Compatibility

    Features

Dual Voice Coils: For increased system flexibility, the woofer has two 4 ohm voice coils. When the voice coils are wired in parallel, the woofer presents a 2 ohm load. When the voice coils are wired in series, the woofer presents an 8 ohm load. In addition, each coil may be connected to a different amplifier channel and each channel will see a 4 ohm load.

Cone Materials: The cone was developed using Kicker's SoloKon technology. The ultra high performance injection molded polypropylene cone remains rigid and minimizes cone flex, lowering harmonic distortion. Distortion in the cone is further reduced with new back bracing.

Surround: The optimized ribbed Santoprene surround allows extended cone excursion for additional bass output and higher SPL. The surround is double-stitched to the cone to add a mechanical fastener to the chemical adhesives. This prevents the cone and surround from separating in the harshest conditions.

Enhanced BAM (Basket And Motor) Assembly: The high-strength steel basket features a low-profile open design, and provides a solid foundation for the precision-aligned motor assembly. Perimeter venting in the BAM relieves pressure from under the spider, supports a linear excursion, and helps dissipate heat from the voice coil and motor structure.

UniPlate Construction: The woofer features a one-piece UniPlate construction with a vented hyper-extended pole piece and backplate. This unique design provides the following benefits:

    • Optimizes heat transfer efficiency for cooler operation and maximum power handling ability
    • Eliminates erratic magnetic flux from the voice coil gap
    • Releases pressure under the suspension for uniform cone movement and responsive low bass
    • Prevents the voice coil from bottoming out and corresponding damage

Tinsel Leads: The woofer features sleeved high-power tinsel lead wires to resist breakage and power-robbing resistance losses. The lead wires are terminated with polymer-based strain relieving mechanical fasteners.

Speaker Terminals: The spring loaded, nickel-plated terminals provide solid connections for speaker wire up to 8 gauge. Single banana plugs and pin connectors will also fit.

Break-in Period: Due to the complex nature of Kicker Comp VR speakers, they require a break-in period in order to produce optimum low-bass response. The high-performance suspension system makes the speaker very stiff out-of-the-box. Approximately 2 weeks of daily playing will allow the suspension to break-in and reach its optimum equilibrium. A broken-in subwoofer will exhibit stronger bass performance, smoother response, and greater low-bass extension.

Rubber Magnet Boot: A black rubber boot covers the outside edge of the magnet structure to improve the cosmetics of the woofer and protect the magnet during installation.

Marine Ready: This woofer is made with a powder coated, weather resistant basket and stainless steel hardware, so it can be used in marine and mobile applications.

    Enclosure Compatibility

Power Handling: The power handling specifications differ according to the type and size of the enclosure. The power handling specifications assume that both voice coils are in use. Note: Both voice coils in a dual voice coil speaker should always be connected.

    Recommended Sealed Box Volume:

    • Compact (minimum enclosure volume): 1 cu/ft; the woofer can handle up to 400 watts RMS (200 watts per voice coil)
    • SQ (maximum enclosure volume): 4.6 cu/ft; the woofer can handle up to 300 watts RMS (150 watts per voice coil)

    Recommended Vented Box Volume:

    • Compact: 1.75 cu/ft; 2.5" x 12.5" port opening; 20" port depth; the woofer can handle up to 300 watts RMS (150 watts per voice coil)
    • SPL/Deep Bass: 2.25 cu/ft; 3" x 12.5" port opening; 20.5" port depth; the woofer can handle up to 300 watts RMS (150 watts per voice coil)

Note: The power handling specifications listed with the vented enclosure recommendations apply only when a 25Hz, 24dB/octave subsonic filter (sold separately) is used with this woofer. If a subsonic filter is not used, power handling may decrease, excessive port noise can occur, and the life of the woofer may be shortened.

    pretty nice sub

Written By Andrew, West Central Wisconsin on Wednesday, December 19, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far it's a really sub but I don't feel like it's completely broken in yet so I haven't tried really pushing it too hard. I have it in the larger sealed Sound Ordinance Bass Bunker paired with a Pioneer GM-5400T, the amp isn't ideal either because it's running the sub at 8 ohms instead of 4. I knew this wasn't perfect but the price on the CVR was too good to pass on. Overall, it's a great deal on a solid sub from a company with a good reputation. A company doesn't get as large as Kicker by selling crap. Also, no mounting hardware, aka screws, included. This is only my 2nd "new" sub and the first was years ago so that may be the standard. #8 sheet metal screws fit prefect tho.
    Pros:
Good response, looks nice, sold construction, lots of boom for your buck
    Cons:
    None yet

    solo baric what?

Written By Riskbreaker0, Catonsville, MD on Tuesday, November 27, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Used to rock my L7 12" solo baric in my firebird. Love it till it was stolen. Slowly built back up my system, latest addition two 12" compVR's 4ohm and two sound ordnance m1350's. It may miss a few notes the solo baric, with it's lower frequency range, was able to hit. But I'm blown away by the amount of sound the VR's are able to make. I bought mine on sale for a louder sound than a solo baric costing $375. I'll take it for sure.
    Pros:
great sounud for a great price
    Cons:
haven't found any yet, they don't have the same frequency range as a 15" sub... but then no 12"s do

Great sub for the money! Very loud and hits hard as hell ! Running it bridged into a ported box with 600 watt Xplod amp. This sub is replacing 2 10'' xplod subs and is much louder and drops more than both 10's.
    Pros:
Dual voice coils Rugged build quality Excellent design Very LOUD Great range vs the competition in same price range Its a kicker
    Cons:
    It wasn't 40 bucks....lol NO CONS

Kicker hasn't let me down yet! Which is why I'm sticking with them.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have owned a few kicker subs throughout my short audio-system experiences, and this is the 3rd pair of subs I've bought from kicker. The last ones were the compvr's, and I felt my new car needed something a little next-level, So I went with two of these in a ported Dual 12" box. I have a 900W RMS Kenwood 9105d Amp pushing them both wired at 1 Ohm, which gives them just enough power to do most of what they need to. I do however still need to upgrade to either a Second battery or a H.O. Alternator, because I have the subs amped as well as my 4 door components, which is causing my headlights to dim and I'm sure isn't giving my battery an easy time. Just know that powering these things can be a hassle, and know what your getting into before you buy. I couldn't have done my own setup without Crutchfield's amazing support team. If your buying Subs, almost every time I would highly recommend going through Crutchfield.
    Pros:
    LOUD. VERY LOUD.
    Cons:
Somewhat expensive, require alot of trunk room to fit two of them.

    compVR12

Written By Anonymous, eugene, oregon on Sunday, February 19, 2012

i have one of these powered by a 800 watt sony xplode amp. It hits very hard on your common bass sounds and i find myself turning it down quite often because its so loud. once you get lower and higher sounds though, it drops off of its normal pounding sounds. this doesnt matter much though because i have powerful components in all four doors(not powered by amp). all in all i love this sub and it makes my car and myself shake like no other. great buy and i got in on sale from Crutchfield. gotta love em. if your looking for a lot of bass, think about buying two of these and really taking your system to the next level.
    Pros:
not as loud on highs and lows
    Cons:
    hits very very very hard

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Decent subs for the price and underated in terms of RMS handling. These sound pretty good with most any hip hop, but I'm not very impressed with their ability to handle fast metal music. They keep up with the fast kick drums fairly decently, but they just lack that *punchiness* I seek. Had to turn up the LPF a bit to get more punch out of them. Maybe they just need more time to break in?

decent entry level equipment, its good when its working, but these are not for people that like it loud for long periods of time, i've had alot of problems with the tinsel leads breaking off on both the 07 and 05 models, i've gone through 3 sets after fixing each set as much as i can....would not recomend them for someone that likes it LOUD

Ive been into the Car audio stage since I was 19. When it comes to subwoofers I highly
recommend this one. Ive used Pioneer premier, Alpine, Jl Audio, MTX, Sony xplode, and
Rockford fosgate each brand has there pros and cons But when I got my kickers, I was
amazed by the looks the bass and the reliablility. I tried so hard to blow these subs and they
are still kicking. Hints the name. Enough said.

    Can't go wrong

Written By BW, Anchorage,AK. on Wednesday, January 20, 2010

Bought 2 of these for a full size extended cab truck to put under the back seat. Built 2 exactly 1 cubic foot boxes filled with approx. 14 oz of polyfil. Wired the speakers in parallel to get 2 ohms and hooked a fosgate P400-2 up to them with a capacitor. Amp is rated at 100x2, build sheet says 244x2. With the amp only turned up halfway even in the bare minimum size box these speakers are incredible. They produce good clear base with out distortion to as loud as you can stand to listen to it. Unless you plan to enter some audio competition you won't go wrong buying these sub woofers, smokin deal! Oh, and can't forget Crutchfield's customer service and shipping absolutely unbeatable.

    My first pair of subs

Written By Anonymous, New England, USA on Thursday, January 14, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Since this product was a part of my first audio system, naturally I decided to buy from crutchfield. The included tech support and other install materials made the purchase of these subwoofers easy and affordable.

The subs are installed properly after a lot of research on how to run the optimum amp + wire configuration. I wired each 4ohm DVC sub in parallel wiring to increase resistance to 2ohm, which my amplifier supported. At 400w RMS @2ohm these subs bump and my amplifier is a 2channel mosfet with 400wx2 RMS @2ohms. Naturally I wanted to push as much power into these subs as possible. Wiring the subs directly to the amp and bypassing the sealed box wire terminals with 12ga wire surely keeps the audio signal strong.

I recommend these subs to anyone looking for great equipment at a great price with added technical support.

    This product gets 5 stars

    Kicker keeps on kicking!

Written By Dan, Naples, Maine on Monday, May 25, 2009

I have two of these subs in a Kicker dual ported box. I've had them for over a year now. These subs don't compare to any subs my brother and I have ever owned. I'm only running 500 watts RMS and these really pound in my Grand Cherokee. My brother tried them in his Trans Am, running 1000 watts RMS. His t-tops were lifting off. Kicker really impresses me with these subs. Awesome subs for a great price!!

    Best Bang for the Buck

Written By Riley, Dell Rapids, SD on Thursday, February 05, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this sub from Crutchfield and I have them mounted in the rear window of a Camaro. The box I made was slightly small for them so they fit under the hatch. It is good placement for them and wired at 1ohm to a 1000 amp they are awesome bang for the buck. The amp you get can make or break them. They can be good or Great so get a good amp.

i would recommend these to anyone who wants amazing bass at a good price.

Solid performance at a great price

Written By Michael, Williamson, WV on Thursday, October 02, 2008

I bought a pair of these subs, and I'm more than happy with their performance.

I installed my Kickers in a slotted Q-Logic enclosure that's in the trunk of my 2006 Lincoln LS. They're powered by two Profile 700M amplifiers, and each sub is being delivered somewhere around 350 watts. They seem to be perfectly content with it, because there's ZERO distortion at even the highest volume levels.

These subs aren't power hungry, and they're not competition grade equipment, but they perform solidly with every kind of music I throw at them. The bass they deliver is full bodied and deep whether I'm listening to Michale Graves, The Misfits, Beethoven or Lil Wayne , and for the price they're tough to beat.

They don't look too shabby with the Kicker grilles installed either. In fact, I'd say they're one of the most aggresive looking subs on the market.

There are some negative reviews for these subs, but I've got to wonder how many of them were written by people who didn't install/power them
properly. I'd also like to know what the negative reviewers were expecting for the amount of money they spent.

The facts are simple. When these subs are paired with the correct enclosure and amplifier they sound fantastic. In my humble opinion that's all that matters...

    Kick A$$ Subs!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My hat is off to KICKER ... I think these subs are the best sounding subs
(for the money) that KICKER ever made. They no longer have that "muddy"
sound ... these subs sound awesome.

I give them 2 thumbs up!!!
