Sennheiser

Our take on the Sennheiser RS 160

by Kristen Schaub

Sennheiser's RS 160 wireless headphones let you enjoy rich, spacious sound without anchoring you to your sound system. The comfortable, cushioned earcups fit around your ears to seal out external noise. Advanced drivers accurately reproduce everything from a clear soprano voice to the heart-pumping beat of the latest R&B track. And with a wireless range of up to 60 feet, you can roam freely while you listen — make popcorn during TV commercials, look through a photo album in another room, or enjoy some music while your spouse sleeps soundly next to you.

Exceptionally "Kleer™" wireless technology
The RS 160s use Kleer wireless technology to deliver uncompressed stereo sound. Unlike other wireless technologies, Kleer delivers lossless, CD-quality digital audio, which means you won't be able to tell the difference between these headphones and your wired ones. Multi-receiver mode allows up to four people using Sennheiser Kleer headphones to listen to the same audio source, so you can easily share music, movies, or TV shows with your friends and family. (Add-on HDR 160 headsets available separately.)

Wireless freedom, at home or on the go
Wireless setup is easy. Just connect the compact transmitter to a spare headphone jack using the included cable. Then plug the transmitter into an AC power outlet or pop in a pair of "AA" batteries for portable use. Automatic tuning does the rest, pairing with the headphones for interference-free sound.

Highlights:

  • comfortable around-the-ear design with padded, sealed earcups and a padded headband
  • Kleer™ wireless technology delivers uncompressed stereo transmission over 2.4 GHz to 2.8 GHz wireless frequency range

    Features

Overview: The Sennheiser RS 160 combines wireless hi-fi audio quality with a truly versatile compact transmitter for listening at home, on-the-go, or at the office. This wireless headphone system consists of a pair of wireless headphones (HDR 160) and a compact transmitter (TX 160) which runs on AC or battery power to best accommodate your application. The RS 160 utilizes Kleer's uncompressed digital wireless audio transmission, offering a range of up to 60 feet, audiophile-grade sound and reception to four optional pairs of Sennheiser Kleer headphones. The Sennheiser RS 160 offers automatic, interference-free pairing between the headphone and transmitter.

Kleer Wireless Transmission Technology: The Sennheiser RS 160 headphone system features the digital wireless audio transmission technology from Kleer. Kleer technology transmits uncompressed audio over a robust 2.4 GHz digital link (2.4-2.8GHz), enabling you to enjoy your music without the hassle of cables. Kleer's uncompressed digital wireless transmission delivers CD-quality sound.

Note: Kleer technology will not interfere with wireless networks or other 2.4 GHz devices.

Wireless Headphones: The RS 160's wireless headphones utilize audiophile-level transducer systems with powerful neodymium magnets for clear and detailed audio reproduction. They provide a transparent and balance sound image with excellent bass response. Leatherette earpads and headband cushions provide a comfortable fit. The headphones receive their wireless stereo audio signal from the included transmitter. The wireless headphones are powered by two supplied rechargeable NiMH "AAA" batteries (for up to 24 hrs). You can connect the headphones to the included AC adapter via the charging Y-cable to recharge the batteries (approx. 16 hrs).

Portable Transmitter: The RS 160 employs a compact, portable transmitter which operates off of AC power and  can also run on battery power. The transmitter connects to your television's or audio system's audio output and then transmits the audio signal wirelessly to the RS 160's wireless headphones. The transmitter comes supplied with an AC power adapter and can also function off of two "AA" batteries (sold separately) for up to 120 hours.

Note: The transmitter requires two "AA" NiMH rechargeable batteries (1.2V/1,300mAH) or two "AA" alkaline batteries (1.5V) for portable use.

Multi-Receiver Mode: Up to 4 Sennheiser Kleer headphones can be connected to one transmitter so 4 people can listen to the same sound source.

Note: Additional Kleer headphones sold separately.

Auto Power Off: If there is no signal from the transmitter for more than 5 minutes, the headphones automatically switch to standby mode. If the headphones are outside the transmission range or switched to off for more than 5 minutes, the transmitter automatically switches to standby mode.

    Controls

    Transmitter:

    • Multi-Function: With the multi-function button, you can switch the transmitter on, to standby mode, set the transmitter to multi-user operation, and associate the transmitter.

    Sennheiser RS 160

Written By Wren, Maryland on Tuesday, May 28, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy to operate, perfect combination of outside noise reduction combined with clear audio transmission. Comfortable to adjust to size and wear for lengthy periods. I have used it outside and it still carries the signal. Was boasting about this in chat room for over-55 chatters and a friend in Ireland loves his, too. Good price for the quality. Just what I've needed when the kids next door are out playing.
    Pros:
Good price for quality. Easy to operate. Good range.
    Cons:
A very faint sound when tv is on Mute.

Living in a one bedroom that is a loft type space meant that I needed to come up with a way to watch movies and play games without disturbing my girlfriend. A little research led me to buy these. They sound great and are easy to set up. My only negatives are that these only come with 3.5mm input so I had to buy and adapter for use with my home receiver and that I'm not always sure at a glance whether or not the headphones need charging.
    Pros:
    Good sound, good range.
    Cons:
Only one input comes standard, you have to buy adapters.

I liked this wireless headphone so much I bought two more to use on my other media basis.
    Pros:
Clarity, comfort, ease of use, learning curve and quick rechargeable batteries.
    Cons:
    Can't think of any.

My 15 year old daughter wanted Beats. After a little research, I decided my money was better spent on the Sennheisers and it was definitely the right choice. While they don't come in the cool Beats colors, the quality of workmanship and sound quality is great. Lots of noice reduction and even an indicator when volume is too loud (although that doesn't stop a teenager - at least its a warning)

    RS 160 wireless headphones

    Product delivered as promised
    Pros:
Wireless set up was smooth and easy
    Cons:
Should come with the 1/4 to 3.5 mini plug adapter so it would work with standard industry stereo receivers. They give you 3 international plug adapters that went straight into the trash. Instead of that, they should give the stereo adapter.

the headphones are making a big impact on getting along better....since the TV goes most of the day, I can enjoy a quiet house, my husband can listen to the news/sports as much as he wants....and then late at night I can watch a movie and he goes to bed undisturbed....great help for both of us living in a small apartment...The only problem is that the on/off button on the headphones is conceal so well, that it is difficult to use...

    Very Nice!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this headphone model mainly for TV as I have trouble hearing soft voices, especially with background noises. So far, I am very pleased with my purchase. The sound is excellent, and I can easily move around the room with out any signal issues. They comfort level is very good, I have worn them up to 2 hours at a time with little discomfort. I am finding that the more I wear them, the less I notice any discomfort. The only issues I had was finding the right cable connections I needed to set up the transmitter, and the volume control. A small knob would work better for me.
    Pros:
Sound quality, range, and comfort level.
    Cons:
Volume control, lack of plug in adapters for transmitter.

Directions not as clear as I would like and needed to call Crutchfield advisor with question re: transmitter, but once set-up works great! Also own the Sennheiser 840 TV wireless headset which my wife prefers, but I prefer the around-the-ear design of the RS166 which I find more comfortable and much better for music listening You can't go wrong with either model. The RS166 is a well-made quality product backed by superior Crutchfield customer support.

    Good Performance

Written By BillM, Maine on Sunday, August 12, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Have used headphones for about two weeks. Easy to set up and get operating. Sound quality has been very good, have not had any background hiss or static . tested range only in room where they are being used, anywhere in the room has been fine..max 15-20 feet. They seal well around the ears. Have been used for tv listening only. They are snug and take some getting used to but are generally comfortable.
    Pros:
Very good sound quality. Easy to set up and adjust
    Cons:
Only come with one cable with a miniplug, so check your system to see what connectors you may need to order separately

    Works well, as expected

Written By SilentRunner, New York, NY on Monday, June 04, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Pretty easy setup, work as expected. The range is good for one room, no distortion. I had the RS130 system for years, working flawlessly, so when the need arose for a second set, went with Sennheiser, again.
    Pros:
The sound simply cuts off when our of range, as opposed to turning into hissing or distorted sounds. The "Kleer" system does seem better, as my old RS130 system would sometimes lose reception if you turned your head and blocked the earpiece with the wireless receptor with your head.
    Cons:
I liked the old "knob" style volume control - it was easy to adjust by feel with headphones on. These have up/down buttons. Also, these only come with 3.5mm male to 3.5mm male cable; RCA to 3.5mm cable should be included, as you'll need it for most cable boxes.

    Headphone Solution

Written By Dannop, Northern California on Monday, May 14, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very nice wireless headphones. Easy to set up and use. Good sound quality and of course no cords zig-zagging on the floor. I use these mainly at night so I don't have to have the volume up and can still watch tv and movies (especially movies). It's really nice to hear and understand all the spoken words. I would have given them 5 stars but I noticed that the sound cut out when I went into another room that is about 40 feet away from the main tv room. Certainly not a deal breaker for me but buyers should beware of the limitations. I've read reviews about people mowing yards and the like and I assume they had the module unit in a direct line of sight situation otherwise I think it would be a spotty performance. I think it's at a good price point and I think that is evidenced by the fact that my local store had other brands of wireless headphones in stock but they have been out of these specific headphones for almost a month.
    Pros:
Good fit, easy set up and the bonus of noise cancelling of regular household noise (dogs, cats, cars)
    Cons:
Doesn't have as long a range away from the base module as they indicate.

Not as user friendly as discontinued model

Written By Stephanie, New York on Wednesday, January 25, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My outdated Sennheiser cordless headphones sat on a charger. I didn't have to replace batteries every time they ran out. I miss that. It's annoying. Also, the buttons on these headphones are tiny and indistinct from each other except for the tiniest little bump, which takes concentration for a few moments to find while wearing the headset. I wish I could return this, but I immediately threw away the packaging because I've always loved Sennheiser products...never thought I wouldn't love them.
    Pros:
    Sound quality.
    Cons:
No charger stand; must replace batteries. Buttons indistinct from each other. Not user friendly.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great product. Setup was easy and works as advertised. I use it for TV viewing while while my husband is reading next to me. Main reason for selecting this headset was the rechargeability and value for the features you get. Sound is good and connection is flawless. I only have one complaint and one suggestion. The packaging was very difficult to open. You will need a sharp knife or exacto blade to open You need to be very careful not to cut the headset itself when cutting the hard plastic packageing. My suggestion would be for a better battery level indicator. The unit only will flash when battery is close to end.
    Pros:
good value for sound quality, range, and construction. Rechargeble headset is nice feature
    Cons:
packaging difficut to open, battery level indicator could be better.

Just got these and found the set-up easy and the quality excellent. Headset is very light and the sound is terrific. Note, however, you need to get an adapter plug so you can plug into a full-size headphone jack on a home theater system. Only comes with a mini-plug for PC's.
