      Audio Features

Equal Power Amp Design w Discrete Circuitry: The Denon AVR-1613 is equipped with a 5 channel power amplifier rated at 75-watts (into 8-ohms, at 20-20kHz, with 0.08% THD, driving 2 channels) that reproduces high-fidelity sound in surround mode with equal quality and power for all channels, true to the original sound. The power amplifier circuit adopts a discrete-circuit configuration that achieves high-quality surround sound reproduction. To faithfully reproduce the original surround sound, each of the Denon AVR-1613's five channels are equipped with its own high-current power amp of equal power. Since these power amps also use discrete circuits configured with parts strictly selected for their contribution to high sound quality, rather than with low-cost integrated circuits (ICs), the surround sound playback is of impeccably high quality.

High-Quality Construction: The Denon AVR-1613 offers a minimum signal path design and direct mechanical ground construction, with independent power supplies for high-quality, audiophile-type sound; all in a vibration resistant chassis.

      • Minimum Signal Path Design: The simple & straight design concept has been thoroughly implemented in the signal paths to contribute to clean audio and video playback. Signal paths are as short as possible to keep signal degradation in the audio and video circuitry to a minimum.
      • Direct Mechanical Ground Construction: Vibration-resistant construction has been used to suppress the adverse influences of vibration on sound quality. The power transformers, a source of vibration, have been securely mounted on the high rigid bottom chassis. Direct mounting of cast-iron feet to the radiator in near proximity to each other serves to suppress mutual vibration with the power transformers and other sources of vibration.
      • Independent Power Supplies: The Denon AVR-1613 employs independent stable power supplies for high-quality sound and picture playback.
      • Vibration Resistant Construction: Vibration-resistant construction suppresses the negative influence of vibration on sound quality. Power transformers are securely mounted on the receiver's solid bottom chassis to minimize vibration

24-bit/192-kHz DACs: This receiver is equipped with AKM Semiconductor 24-bit/192-kHz (AK4358VQ) DACs on all channels to decode and playback high-resolution recordings with less jitter and  clearer sound.

32-Bit Processing DSP: The Denon AVR1613 is equipped with a Floating Point 32-bit DSP (ADSP21487) for powerful and highly accurate surround sound reproduction.

Multi-Channel Decoding Formats: The Denon AVR-1613 AV receiver supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.

Note:  Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the AV receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). Even though the AV receiver will decode 7.1channel surround sound (via HDMI), it will only output 5.1ch surround, because it lacks Surround Back channel speaker outputs.

Surround Parameters: You can adjust the following surround mode parameters:

      • Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust:
        • Panorama: Broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect, especially effective when there is limited output from the surround channels, panorama can be turned on/off in the menu.
        • Dimension: Allows you to move the sound field forward or backward.
        • Center Width: Allows you to adjust the width of the center channel.
      • Center Image: In the Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 5 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).
      • Denon Original Surround Mode Settings: While listening in one of the Denon Original Surround Modes, there are three further enhancements you can adjust:
        • Room Size: This feature allows you to set the size of your desired acoustic environment when using specific Denon Original Surround Modes; select Small, Medium small, Medium, Medium large, or Large.
        • Effect Level: This function adjusts the effect signal level from 1 to 15 when using specific Denon Original Surround Modes.
        • Delay Time: This feature adjusts the delay time (0-300ms) to control the sound stage size.

Denon Original Listening Modes: Denon's Original Listening Modes, combined with Dolby Digital/DTS/Dolby Pro Logic processing, produce more realistic, powerful sound effects for your movie and music sound tracks based on the type of content and your home theater setup. You can choose from the following:

      • Rock Arena: For rock and popular music sources, this mode surrounds you with reflected sound of the kind you would hear at a live concert.
      • Jazz Club: This mode recreates the atmosphere of a live house where the ceiling is low and you are enveloped with rich doses of reflected sound.
      • Matrix: With this mode, you can add rich reflected sound to 2-channel stereo music sources where reflected sound is normally not audible.
      • Video Game: This mode is suited for achieving surround sound with video games..
      • Mono Movie: This mode is used when you listen to recorded monaural sound sources such as AM radio broadcasts or news programs from the center speaker.
      • Virtual: Enjoy surround effects using only the front speakers or set of headphones.
      • Multichannel Stereo: Left and right stereo channels are distributed to all the speakers so that stereo sound can be heard from all directions at any listening position.

Direct Listening Modes: The Denon AVR-3313CI offers two Direct Listening Modes which bypass the receiver's tone & DSP processing for higher sound quality performance. Direct Mode provides playback of 2ch or Multichannel audio in its original form, without any surround or tone processing. Pure Direct Mode goes a step further by turning off the receiver's display and analog video circuitry to minimize the possibility of any noised being added to the audio signal.

Audyssey Technology: The AVR-1613 features a full package of Audyssey audio technologies for optimal sound quality. Audyssey Dynamic Volume offers real-time volume adjustment, while Audyssey DynamicEQ improves your system's surround effects during low volume levels. Audyssey MultEQ automatically sets speakers to suit your room's listening environment and the speakers' characteristics.

      • Audyssey MultEQ: Audyssey MultEQ technology helps create an optimal acoustic profile for your home theater. Using the included setup microphone, Audyssey MultEQ measures sound levels and adjusts speaker configuration accordingly, making setup fast and easy. This room acoustic measuring and correction system analyzes (via the included microphone) the audio characteristics of your speaker system and your listening environment at up to 6 measurement points and automatically tailors the sound for top audio fidelity. You can set the Audyssey MultEQ to one of the following modes.
        • Audyssey: Optimizes the crossover point, output level, delay time, and equalization of all speakers based on speaker frequency response, speaker location, and room acoustics.
        • Audyssey Bypass L/R: Optimizes all speakers except front left and right.
        • Audyssey Flat: Optimizes frequency response of all speakers to flat.
        • Manual: Adjusts the tonal quality for each speaker individually using the manual equalizer settings; 63 Hz, 125 Hz, 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1 kHz, 2 kHz, 4 kHz, 8 kHz, and 16 kHz (-20dB to +6dB).
        • Off: Turns equalizer off.
      • Dynamic EQ: Audio engineers mix music and movie soundtracks at reference levels much louder than typical home listening levels. At lower volumes the human ear perceives sound differently; voices change, bass dissipates, and the surround effect becomes less enveloping. Dynamic EQ adjusts the frequency response curve based on volume to maintain consistent bass output, octave-to-octave balance, and surround impact, resulting in rich sound at any volume. You can set the Dynamic EQ to 0, 5, 10, or 15 dB.
      • Audyssey Dynamic Volume: Audyssey Dynamic Volume solves the problem of large variations in volume level between television programs, commercials, and between the soft and loud passages of movies. Dynamic Volume addresses the issue of commercials that are too loud and movie soundtracks with vast differences between soft and loud passages; the results are more intelligible dialogue, loud passages maintain impact, and soft whispers are heard clearly. When the volume level changes, Dynamic EQ also adjusts the frequency response to maintain sound quality. You can set the Dynamic Volume to Day (low), Evening (middle), Midnight (high), or off.

CINEMA EQ (Cinema Equalizer): The Cinema EQ function gently decreases the level of the extreme high frequencies, compensating for overly-bright sounding motion picture soundtracks. Select this function if the sound from the front speakers is too bright. This function only works in the Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic (including PL II, PL IIx, PL IIz), and DTS Neo:6 modes.

Restorer: Compressed audio formats such as MP3, WMA (Windows Media Audio), and MPEG-4 AAC reduce the amount of data by eliminating signal components that are hard for the human ear to hear. The Restorer function generates the signals eliminated upon compression, restoring the sound to conditions near those of the original sound before compression. It also corrects the sense of volume of the bass to obtain richer sound with compressed audio signals. You can choose from 4 settings:

      • Mode 1 (Restorer 64): Optimized mode for compressed sources with very weak highs.
      • Mode 2 (Restorer 96): Apply suitable bass & treble boost for all compressed sources.
      • Mode 3 (Restored HQ): Optimized mode for compressed sources with normal highs.
      • Off: Does not use Restored function.

Dynamic Range Compression (DRC): Motion picture soundtracks have tremendous dynamic range (the contrast between very soft and very loud sounds). For listening late at night, or whenever the maximum sound level is lower than usual, Compressing the dynamic range allows you to hear all of the sounds in the soundtrack with reduced dynamic range. DRC works when playing program sources recorded in Dolby Digital or DTS.

Night Mode: The Night Mode optimizes sound for late night listening. This function can be set to Low, Mid, High, or Off.

Tone Settings: You can independently adjust the system's overall Bass and Treble settings from -6 to +6 dB. You can also fade the sound from front to rear, or vice-versa.

Volume Settings: The AVR-1613 offers the following volume settings.

      • Volume Scale: You can choose to display an Absolute volume scale (0-98) or Relative volume scale (-79.5 to 18dB).
      • Volume Limit: You can set a maximum volume level of 0, -10, or -20 dB to limit the receiver's total volume output.
      • Turn-On Volume: You can define the volume setting that is active when the power is turned on (0, 1-98, -79 to +18dB, or Last)
      • Mute Level: You can set the amount of attenuation for the audio muting circuit; -40dB or -20dB below current volume, or full mute (sound turned off entirely).

Level Adjustments:  The AVR-1613 provides the following level adjustments.

      • Source Level: This function adjusts the playback level of the currently selected input source's audio input. Use this feature if there are differences in the input volume levels between different sources. You can correct the playback level of the audio input from -12 to +12dB.
      • Dialogue Level: You can adjust the output level (+/-12dB) to clarify the dialogue output from the center channel.
      • Subwoofer Level: You can set the receiver's subwoofer output level (+/-12dB) independent from the other speaker levels and system's main volume.

Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Denon AV receiver offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.

      • Assignable Digital Inputs: The AVR-1613 features an optical digital (Toslink) input and a coaxial digital input. Each input can be assigned to any of the different input sources except Tuner.
      • Speaker Terminals: The receiver has binding-post terminals for all speaker connections. The binding-post terminals can accept bare wire, pin connectors, and banana plugs. The receiver will accept speaker impedances of 6 to 16-ohm.
      • Headphones: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the speakers are automatically muted.

      Video Features

HDMI (v1.4): With five HDMI v1.4 inputs (4 rear/1 front), the AVR-1613 allows you to route multiple high-definition devices, like game consoles and Blu-ray players, to your TV. It also allows you to connect all of your devices to your TV with a single HDMI cable (via its HDMI monitor output), reducing cable clutter. The HDMI inputs are assignable to different input sources. They support HDCP copyright protection and are compatible with 3D signals, Deep Color, xvYCC technology, LipSync, ARC, and HDMI control.

3D Pass-Through: With the advent of 3D media, it is important to own a receiver that recognizes 3D video signals. The AVR-1613 is able to pass through 3D signals from your Blu-ray player, ensuring that the 3D effect doesn't get lost in translation. It also recognizes signals from 3D television broadcasts. By connecting a 3D-compliant Blu-ray disc player and 3D-compliant TV to the AVR-1613, you will have a 3D home theater where you can enjoy high-definition sound and video on a level you've never experienced before.

HDMI Standby Pass-Through: When enabling the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function, regardless of whether the AV receiver is "On" or in "Standby" both audio/video streams from an HDMI input will be output to your television, via the receiver's HDMI monitor output. You can select between three HDMI through function modes.

      • HDMI Input: Selects the HDMI Input (1-4) for which the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is enabled.
      • Last: The HDMI Standby-Through function is activated on the input source selected at the time of setting the AV receiver to the "Standby" mode.
      • Off: The HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is disabled.

ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.

Deep Color & x.v.Color Support: The AVR-1613 also supports Deep Color and x.v.Color content, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture

Lipsync: If needed, the audio signal can be manually delayed to match the video signal; adjust from 0-200ms.

Analog Video Inputs: The receiver features two composite video inputs and one composite video monitor output. You must connect the receiver to your TV via composite video to view incoming video from the receiver's composite inputs. There are no component video inputs/outputs.

Video Select Function: You can switch the video input source on the receiver while listening to a different audio signal.

      Network + Tuner Functions

Network Connection: The Denon AVR-1613 is equipped with an Ethernet (RJ-45) port that lets you connect the receiver to your home network (LAN) and your broadband internet provider. When connected to your home network, the AVR-1613 lets you listen to Internet radio and a host of other online music sources from your broadband internet provider, as well as play audio files & display still images from your computer via its network connection (DLNA 1.5 certified). Denon AVR-1613

Written By PWB, Southeast Texas on Thursday, May 16, 2013
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was a great choice for my needs, great features, easy set-up (if you follow the instructions). I would recommend this unit to anyone wanting just the basic receiver with excellent sound. I had to call tech support only once to help me set up the subwoofer, friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient. (note: call to support would have been unnecessary had I followed the instructions first.
      Pros:
I am not technical enough to rate the pros or cons, but I sounds really goods.
      Cons:

      Great A/V Receiver

Written By Steve, Long Island, NY on Monday, April 15, 2013
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great a/v receiver. Very easy to attach your equipment, well labeled on the back of the unit. The menu walks you through the wiring as well. I found the menu very simple and easy to understand. I love the auto speaker calibration. This unit measures 6 positions and for me worked spot on. I used 2 hdmi connections, 1 for Fios tv box and the other for a blue ray player. Everything works great. I have not used airplay yet. Thank you Crutchfield for all your help, you guys are great. At this price point and if it has all the correct connects for your equipment the 1613 will surprise you. It surprised me.
      Pros:
      Easy to install and use
      Cons:
      Non found yet

Fabulous sound and so many features. Once I connected this A/V to the internet I was in a whole new world! So much music to choose from and such great sound.
      Pros:
Simplicity, especially when compared to my old Yamaha. It is easy to set up and easy to use.
      Cons:
It would be nice to have a couple of inputs other than HDMI such as component video (as yet everyone's equipment is not totally out of the dark ages)

I was looking for a receiver to replace my old one and this was perfect. Setup was fairly easy, yet lengthy. When setup was over and everything was done. It looked and sound like I wanted.
      Cons:
AirPlay does not work with 1st generation iPads.

      Home theater upgrade.

Written By Uncle Ike, Orlando on Sunday, March 24, 2013
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

You could not buy technology this good twenty years ago at any price. Very affordable home theater option. I upgraded my 5.1 primarily because it had no HDMI ports. I was surprised what a difference this Denon made with the same speakers. I used the Audyssey setup microphone and it told me two of the ceiling speakers where out of phase at the ceiling end of the wire, amazing. After I corrected that it ran the room tests and adjusted the system output. What a difference! I think in my case primarily because my center speaker is relatively large it had been underpowered before. Voices are clear and crisp and at just the right level, imaging is very good from several locations, not nearly as localized as before. I would buy it again today, it's a bargain.
      Pros:
Audyssey system, clean power, multiple HDMI ports, USB, streaming etc, A lot of features for the money.
      Cons:
      It doesn't wash my dishes.

      Demon AVR-1613

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For my needs this provided excellent features and was priced very affordable. A very good choice.
      Pros:
The 'Odyssey' ( to balance sound from different listening areas of the room) was easy to set up and makes a big difference when watching movies or listening to music. No more trying to adjust so that everyone sitting close to speakers are as comfortable with the sound as others that aren't. It is balanced perfectly.
      Cons:
      Haven't found any.

      avr-1603

Written By David M, FL on Sunday, February 24, 2013

I'd start off by saying that any modern receiver is a somewhat complicated device, and set-up requires a certain level of know-how. I have a couple of minor issues with this receiver, but nothing but accolades for Cruthfield. Do NOT try to save a couple of bucks and buy this elsewhere. I've utilized customer support several times, and they respond quickly and are extremely knowledgeable. You would be a fool to try to think you would get similar support from anybody else. I'm a loyal Crutchfield customer from here on out.
      Pros:
Looks good, sounds great. Plenty of power. The minimalist back panel has all the inputs your should ever need.
      Cons:
HDMI pass through is glitchy if the reciever power is not on. I wanted the option of not running the Tivo through the receiver audio sometimes for simple TV viewing, but the passthrough would occaisionally pixelate during pass-through. When the receiver was powered on, this was not an issue. I resolved this by running HDMI directly from the TIVO to the TV with an optical audio out to the receiver. Sometimes the receiver forgets my manual speaker settings.

      Very Satisfied!

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a Receiver with good stereo and surround specs and this baby does not disappoint. The installation was very easy. The interface looks bare but this is not important since the sound and features is what really matters. Wow, and that stereo sound, it is just fantastic! I have a pair of vintage Technics bookshelf speakers (yes Technics) and they just sing to my ears, specially the highs and mids are truly amazing. Don't bother looking other alternatives. At this price point, it is the best.
      Pros:
Great Stereo and surround sound. Affordable price. Enough connections for your gear. Very easy to install and setup
      Cons:
      None so far

      Great receiver

I was looking at the model 1513 and then found this one. This could not be easier to set up and program. We have it hooked up to an apple TV and run a Samsung blu-ray through it. It is delightful with the Infinity 250 something center speaker and Klipsch speakers. A real winner.

Absolutely can not beat the customer service. Products were shipped as if they were fine crystal and as such had no shipping damage. Will buy again from Crutchfield a good American company with great products.

      Can't Beat It

Written By JayH, Frederick, MD on Thursday, January 03, 2013
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Awesome receiver at this price level, you won't find one better.
      Pros:
It doesn't get any easier to set up. It will even tell you if you mess up connecting the speaker wires. Apple Air Play is awesome and the iPhone app is a great addition. It even has great sound. This receiver will blow your mind on sound quality for a unit at this price point. As usual Crutchfield service and support are top notch. Don't bother to look anywhere else.
      Cons:
For my taste, it could use just a touch more power, but it definitely gets the job done well for not spending $600+

      Step Up

Written By Anonymous, Burlington NJ on Sunday, December 30, 2012
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Step up from the Sony surround system I owned for about 7 years. Clean sound paired with a polk audio sub and energy surround speakers. Like the ability to stream windows media from my home pc. Easy setup with Audessy.
      Pros:
      Good sound, price, nice features.
      Cons:
Even though the Audessy setup was easy, I did run into some issues where it told me some speakers were out of phase. Each time I ran it it would give me a different speaker as an issue. After double checking wires everything was in order and I just ignored the warning and continued the setup. It completed and everything seems to be fine.

Nice receiver, but has one big problem- AirPlay

Written By Chad, Plano, TX on Thursday, December 27, 2012

I really love the sound of the Denon AVR-1613, but Airplay only worked for about three days and then suddenly the airplay icon disappeared from all of my OS products (two iPhones and an iPad. I've reset the receiver but still no Airplay. I can still Airplay to the Denon thru my Apple TV, but when the Airplay on the Denon was working properly, I could call up a song on my iPhone and the Denon would automatically turn on and start playing my selection. This feature is the primary reason I purchased the Denon AVR-1613, but it appears dead now. I may return the Denon to Crutchfield to exchange for a product that hasn't experienced this problem with Airplay. The folks at Crutchfield have been awesome, as always!!
      Pros:
Great sound, easy set-up and everything works as advertised with the exception of Airplay. Good, clean look to the Denon AVR-1613. Initially, Pandora wouldn't work thru the Denon AVR-1613, but Denon sent out an update to fix this. Once downloaded, Pandora worked perfectly, but still no AirPlay.
      Cons:
AirPlay stopped working after just a few days.

      Great Reciever

Written By Chris P, Central Valley, California on Tuesday, December 18, 2012
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After playing with a few other home theater products such as the Bose Solo, and the Sony package system I fiunally decided to go back to the basics since I was not happy with either of those systems. The Bose flat did not sound good for the price and the Sony Blue Ray portion quit working and the sound was scratchy. This Denon reciever is nice, has plenty of power and pushed the Polk Audio Blackstone speakers well. It does not have a lot of funtions but it doesn't appear to need them. Set up was easy.
      Pros:
      Priced well. Good performance.
      Cons:
Not a lot of on command sound features.

I'm certainly happy with this buy! It is sleek and simple with hdmi only as inputs. AirPlay has been a lifesaver and denon remote app is neat feature to have.
      Pros:
AirPlay, remote app for iPhone, mic setup very convenient.
      Cons:
Expected airplay video rather than just audio, kept receiving phase error in mic set up, wish there was a warning on computer hdmi out...a lot of computers aren't made to have the signal passed through the receiver so have to default back to component cable until I update my video card. This information isn't readily available for most video cards, I was only able to figure this out combing through several audio blogs and forums. Still happy with the performance though!

      Great Except Airplay Weirdness

Written By Evan, Lebanon Twp, NJ on Thursday, December 13, 2012
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy to setup, sounds great! The only issue I've had is that occasionally while using Airplay, it begins to skip every couple seconds. This IS addressed in the manual and the solution it cites is to quit the app on your iDevice and reopen it. That did NOT work for me. Additionally, it also happened when using Airplay from my computer, so it didn't seem to be related to the "sending" device...it was an issue with the receiver itself. What DID work was unplugging the receiver for a minute and plugging it back in. Since power-cycling it, it hasn't acted up again (knock on wood).
      Pros:
Easy to setup, sounds good, Airplay when it behaves
      Cons:
      Airplay can be picky.

Simple clean and easy to setup.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Really like this receiver. Its simple and clean and easy to setup. Works great as a surround sound receiver for the living room. Sounds great with my in wall speakers. Network streaming and air play worked great. I did have a bit of an issue getting airplay to work but it suddenly showed up on my iOS devices and has worked ever since.
      Pros:
Simple and clean. Streaming and airplay are really nice features.
      Cons:
Wish it had at least one set of RCA audio outputs.

      Denon AVR-1613

Written By oesman, Bound Brook, NJ on Tuesday, December 11, 2012
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was very pleased with this receiver. I was replacing an Onkyo SR-706 that had an HDMI switching problem. The sound of the Denon was superior to the Onkyo to my ear. The set up was also easier. The only thing that I missed was having additional connectors on the back, other then the HDMI inputs. I have no regrets about buying this unit.
      Pros:
Easy set up. Good sound. Fast responce to remote control.
      Cons:
More inputs would have been nice.

      Overall nice receiver

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first home theater purchase ever. The AVR1316 has way more features than I need but I have really enjoyed learning how to use it. Switching between sources is simple and set up is quite easy as well. The Audessey set up with microphone is ridiculously simple. With some tweaking, I have my 5.1 system pretty fine tuned to my liking. I really like the Sirius and Internet radio options. Watching movies is amazing! Can't seem to get AirPlay up and running but I'm sure i'll figure it out. Overall I'm very happy with the purchase.
      Pros:
Tons of cool features for the price. Fairly easy to customize your settings. Sirius and internet radio are great! Fairly easy to set up and use.
      Cons:
Some features can be a bit technical for a novice.
