Our take on the P.I.E Aux Input Adapter For Honda

by Tim Sprinkle

Important Note: Your Honda radio may be code protected. Please verify that the code is available from your Honda dealer before disconnecting your battery for this installation.

Got a portable music player? Then you probably know that a direct connection to your vehicle's radio will give you the best possible sound quality. The Precision Interface Electronics HON98-AUX adapter lets you convert the CD changer port on your Honda factory stereo into an auxiliary input, suitable for connecting an add-on satellite radio tuner, portable music player, or other audio source.

Just plug the 14-pin data connector on the adapter cable into the factory radio's changer port, connect your portable player to the adapter's RCA inputs, press "CD" on the radio, and go! This adapter uses the CD changer port — once connected, you can't use a changer with your factory radio. If you have a factory cassette player, you'll make the connection directly to that, rather than to the receiver. Warranty: 90 days.

Please enter your vehicle information or call a Sales Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to find out if this adapter is compatible with your vehicle.

Features

Overview: DPX Auxiliary input converters by PIE (Precision Interface Electronics) are designed to convert the CD Changer port of the OEM radio (with CD Changer controls) into an auxiliary input. Devices such as Satellite Radios, DVD Players, VCRs, MP3 Players, and Game Systems can be added the the OEM radio without an FM Modulator. DPX Technology maintains full function of all factory steering wheel and rear seat controls.

Compatibility: The HON98-AUX allows you to add an auxiliary input to the factory radio in select Honda vehicles. The adapter plugs into the factory system using the supplied harness, avoiding wire splicing and modifications.

Note: The adapter takes the place of the CD changer, so you cannot have a CD changer and the adapter connected to your vehicle at the same time.

Mounting: The adapter can be secured to any flat surface.

Connections: The adapter has a stereo RCA input to connect to your auxiliary audio device (no audio cable included). On the other side, the adapter has a rectangular 10-pin jack that interfaces with the supplied harness. The adapter end of the harness has the 10-pin plug and the other end has a rectangular 14-pin plug which plugs into the factory radio.

Works perfectly

Written By NucleusPrime, Mount Juliet, TN on Friday, April 20, 2012
Installed in a 2004 Honda Civic
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed perfectly in a 2004 Honda Civic but the instructions were not 100% accurate. There are more screws holding down the center console than indicated, but I used my service manual to remove the components anyway. Works great after getting installed and testing it out. I did not attach the ground and I can use my MP3 device with or without being charged and I get no ground loop. I am very pleased.
Pros:
Works perfectly with my Android phone. Sound quality is great and there is no ground loop noise while running off the battery or charging my device.
Cons:
Instructions not 100% right and missing a few steps for the 2004 Civic LX with manual transmission.

Works well with on design flaw

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed unit on a 2002 Honda Accord LX with an AM/FM disc player. Directions were clearly written and installation was straightforward. Unit functioned as intended but there is a persistent electrical hum coming from the speakers. This is somewhat annoying but I'm willing to tolerate it to facilitate continued use of my car speakers for this purpose. P.I.E. should consider a design enhancement to correct this problem.

Redesign does not work

Written By Alex, Los Alamos,NM on Saturday, September 17, 2011
Installed in a 2003 Honda Pilot
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit I received is redesigned. The module itself now includes a 3.5mm female jack, with a male 3.5mm-RCA adapter cable in the box instead of the female RCA jacks built into the module. When I installed it into my 2003 Pilot (an easy install) I could not get the male 3.5mm adapter cable to sit properly in the module. The sound was "tinny" at best and non existent at worst. This new connection to the module is not robust enough in my opinion for this application.

Works as advertised, and I'm pleased with that. I'm less pleased that the cable
was so short, which complicated the install.

This + Bluetooth = Smart Phone Bliss

Written By Jim, Hartford, CT on Sunday, February 06, 2011
Installed in a 1998 Honda Accord
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My first unit didn't work, but Crutchfield sent a replacement which worked just fine. Install took 20 min. The best part was that I added a 'Blackberry bluetooth stereo gateway' (google it) and now my crummy 98 Accord has wireless streaming music from my Droid. This unit and gateway are nice and hidden. BTW, I didn't ground since the gateway requires power. Check it out!

Perfect Operation

Written By STEF, Norcross, GA on Monday, November 08, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Crutchfield helped me identify the perfect product for my needs. Stock Honda CD
player in an Accord '02 LX. Easy installation and excellent performance. I had
tried FM transmitters before for my Nintendo DS, which is where I store mp3s and
videos for playback as I do not have an expensive phone or IPOD or other
dedicated MP3 device. The problem with the FM transmitters was reception. And I
live in a metro area and finding a truly clear channel difficult. Sound quality
of those systems were poor. This however works great. Wish I had installed this
a while ago. Now enjoying my own tunes and not grabbing for CD after CD. Almost
forgot, playing one of my games (while parked of course) is pretty cool through
the car audio system! My kids wanted to know how that was possible. :)

P.I.E Aux Input Adapter For Honda

Written By Sri, Columbus, Ohio on Wednesday, October 20, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Hello there,

The Crutchfield Auxiliary Audio Input adapter arrived y'day. I installed without opening anything in my Honda Odyssey 2001 EX. What I did was I pulled the cup holder
completely outside (which is below the CD player). Then I plugged the cable/wire between Radio/Stereo port and the unit that Crutchfield shipped. Later, I put the cup
holder back in. That's it. The quality of the sound is as advertised by Crutchfield. I did not ground the black/white wire.

great sound

Installed in a 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this module in about 20 minutes. I put it into a Civic Hybrid ('03),
and it worked well. The only trick is removing the first piece to get to the
screws holding the radio bracket. I had success by pushing from behind, as
prying it from the front was going to leave a mark. Once I got that piece out,
it was very simple. I didn't even have to pull the radio out all the way. I
mounted the Poly-Planar IC-3.5PM in a blank switch hole (to the left of the cig
lighter socket), and it looked really clean.

The sound is very good, but of course limited to the speakers and stock amp, but
way better than the FM modulator I had been using to hear my IPOD.

The best thing is that it maintains the look and feel of the stock radio. I can
add better speakers, amps, and sub later, and my car still won't have the
attractiveness to thieves as it would if the head unit was replaced.

There is an odd digital noise when you first turn it on, if the input is not
connected (sounds like the receiver is scanning for disk on the player that's
not really there). This noise is barely noticeable (and rises with the volume
knob), but as soon as you plug in the player, it stops. I did connect the
ground wire per the instructions. (I may have been able to quiet the noise by
disconnecting it, but it's unobtrusive enough to not mess with it).

Overall, very satisfied, and would buy again.

Works and Sounds Great - Install Tips!

Written By jev, Snoqualmie, WA on Sunday, June 27, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I put this in a 2001 Civic EX sedan and it works and sounds great. But here's a tip: The Crutchfield installation instructions said to take out the factory stereo when installing this, BUT I was able to reach the plug-in from below WITHOUT taking out the deck. Saved me lots of time and possible dash dings. I also drilled a hole in the the little compartment below the deck and fed my RCA plugs through it. Now I just tuck the iPod and wires in there and close the little door when I leave the car. Finally, the instructions say you only need the ground wire when using portable equipment. I've read that if you use your iPod with a charger while grounded you will get clicks and pops in your signal. So I wired the ground through a $2 push-button switch. I drilled a hole for the switch in a pop-out blank in the lower console so now I can easily turn the ground on or off depending on whether I'm charging or not. This is a super cool little device that keeps your vehicle looking stock and does not require a fancy new deck with detachable face-plates and all that other stuff to worry about. Thanks Crutchfield!

HON98-AUX Performance and installation review

Written By Kevin, Bay area, CA on Sunday, June 06, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation:
I just installed the HON98-AUX adapter in my 2004 Honda Civic EX. It was a bit harder than what I have read. The instructions provided by Crutchfield were about 90% accurate, missing some detail around one key step, but the technical help line answered my question within minutes. All in all, a bit of a knucklebuster, but relatively simple installation.
Performance: Does what it says on the tin. As soon as I had it hooked up, I turned on the radio and it was ready to go, no fuss, no problems. Amazingly simple product that works great. The audio from my XM Skydock is crystal clear with zero staic/buzzing/etc. I installed using double sided foam tape and placed it right behind the radio.

Cons: None really, the reason I gave a 4 was that the instructions were a bit lacking and also from the initial tech support did not inform me that I would need additional adapter(RCA to 3.5mm) to make my product work. Got one, no probs, but cost me a day.

Best no-frills upgrade

Written By David, New Jersey on Thursday, May 20, 2010
Installed in a 2004 Honda Civic
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this in my 2004 Honda Civic last night. I borrowed another reviewer's idea
and installed it with the Poly-Planar IC-3.5PM. I couldn't be happier with the results. The
installation took a bit longer than I thought, only because I was a bit timid about taking
apart the console to get the radio out and getting the Poly-Planar IC-3.5PM installed
cleanly took a little creativity with a drill (I wish I could add a picture of this, cuz I'm pretty
proud of my first ever install!) I can now listen cd quality music from my iphone and
pandora without the static of an fm transmitter! Just an fyi, I didn't use the ground but I
don't get any static or buzzing when using it without a charger as some of the other
reviewer do.

CD quality audio!

Written By Anonymous, Charleston, WV on Wednesday, December 16, 2009
Installed in a 2004 Honda Odyssey
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this as an upgrade to an FM converter for my wife. Had so many headaches
with the FM converter - static, always having to change the station, sub-par audio, etc. I
installed this converter in less than an hour. I used the Poly-Planar IC-3.5PM for a
factory-look installation. What a differnece in sound! I did not use the ground cable
and have had no issues with noise. Top notch product and service. I would, though,
recommend purchasing the Pro.Fit Trim Panel Tool- I marred the dash a bit using a
screw driver to pop the dash trim off.
