Niles Audio

Our take on the Niles WS120

by Amanda P.

This in-wall IR (infrared) sensor works as part of an IR repeater system, letting you control your audio/video components from other rooms in your home. It mounts unobtrusively in your wall and picks up commands from your audio/video system's remote control. The WS120 takes up the same space as a single light switch, and its wide angle of reception makes it easy to target from just about anywhere in the room.

To complete your IR repeater system, you'll also need:

  • An IR hub: The hub accepts the IR signals from the WS120 sensor, and passes the instructions on to your A/V gear via IR flashers.
  • IR flashers: The IR hub passes the commands from the WS120 to these infrared light-emitting devices, which in turn control your components.
  • Infrared cable to wire your IR repeater system.

Highlights:

  • receiving range: 20' to 35' (depending on the strength of your remote)
  • LCD- and plasma-proof sensor design — works near flat-panel TVs
  • works near fluorescent lighting or indirect sunlight
  • bi-color LED confirms the reception of an IR command and the on/off status of your A/V system
  • includes Decora® plate and snap-in insert
  • mounts in single-gang junction box (2-3/4"W x 4-1/2"H x 1-1/4"D)
  • passes high data rate IR code formats, including Phillips RCMM codes
  • warranty: 2 years
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

    Features

IR System Overview:  An infrared (IR) extender system enables you to control your IR remote controlled A/V equipment from a remote location. This enables you to place your A/V components out of sight (behind cabinet doors, in the rear of a room, or in a different room) and still conveniently control your equipment.

IR System Components: The WS120 Wall-mount Infrared Sensor is one of three elements that make up an infrared extender system:

    • IR Sensors (such as the WS120): IR Sensors are the "eyes" of the system, receiving IR commands from hand-held remote controls and relaying the commands to the Main System Unit via a 2-conductor shielded cable. Generally, sensors are placed so that you can easily and naturally point your remote control directly at them. In addition this wall-mount unit, IR sensors are also available in ceiling-mount, surface-mount and table-top models.
    • IR Main System Unit (such as MSU140, MSU250, MSU480 or MSU440Z): The IR Main System Unit provides a connection hub for IR sensors and/or keypads and IR flashers and is generally located near the A/V components. The Main System Unit, which is the "heart" of an IR extender system, has LED indicators to monitor the IR extender system.
    • IR Flashers (sold separately): IR Flashers re-transmit the infrared signals from the IR Main System Unit to your A/V components. Flashers are the "voice" of an IR extender system that "speaks" to your components.

Note: An IR sensor expansion hub, Model IRH610, is available to provide additional sensor inputs to y our system.

Universal Compatibility: When used in a complete system, this IR sensor is compatible with virtually all brands of A/V equipment and remote controls between 25kHz and 90kHz, including the recently introduced Philips RCMM codes.

Universal Noise Suppression: The sensor has a patent-pending Universal Noise Suppression design that effectively eliminates IR interference from plasma and LCD TVs, CFL (fluorescent) lighting, and indirect sunlight. This two-stage technology combines an optical noise filter with a "smart" electronic circuit to provide consistent, reliable control.

Decora Style: This WS120 is a Decora-style wall mount IR sensor and includes a removable white Decora insert and a white Decora faceplate.

Mounting: The WS120 is designed to be mounted in a single-gang electrical box that is within "line of sight" from most areas of the room. The sensor has a mounting depth of 1-1/4". As with any type of IR sensor, avoid locating the WS120 where it will be exposed to direct sunlight. It should not be installed into electrical boxes with 110-Volt devices or near any potential sources of electrical or optical noise, such as light dimmers, florescent lighting fixtures, low-voltage lights, and neon lights.

Wiring: The WS120 connects to the Niles infrared main systems unit (or IRH610 sensor expansion hub) with an individual "home run" of Category 5 ("Cat 5") cable. Most states and municipalities usually require the wire to have a specific "CL" fire rating. Please consult your local building inspection department for requirements in your area.

Interference Resistance: The WS120 is resistant to CFL interference created by fluorescent lighting. This gives you more installation flexibility into areas with fluorescent lighting.

IR Receiving Range: Tests with various manufacturers' remote controls show that the operating range can vary from 20 to 35 feet (depending upon the strength of your handheld remote). The IR pickup angle is 30° off-axis (horizontal and vertical) at 25 feet.

LED Indicator: This IR sensor features a bi-color LED which is useful when testing or troubleshooting the IR System. The LED should light solid green when power status is detected and flashes blue to confirm the reception of an infrared remote command.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It was my first time installing an IR system so I was a bit concerned it wouldn't work. I figured I'd have to program something to accept signals from my particular devices. I installed this sensor with a MSU140 hub and MF1 flashers and it started working beautifully. No programming, no complications. Just wire from the sensor to the hub using the provided schematic and cat 6e cable, connect your flashers, and power it up. Nothing else to it!
    Pros:
    plug and play

    Niles IR in-wall sensor

Written By Anonymous, Southeast, PA on Monday, March 05, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This sensor was added to a twenty year old Niles IR repeater system using the older "three wire" infrastructure including the "brain box" and extender. The system has been extremely reliable and has at least four generations of Niles sensors spread out in vairious rooms in the house. The newest sensors are the best yet. It is wonderful that Niles continues to make the new sensors backward compatible through the addition of a 150 ohm resistor between the DATA and GROUND connections. The resistors were placed at the sensors instead of at the "brain boxes" and extender as shown in the Niles technical service bulletin on this issue without difficulty.

The Niles technical people has been consistently outstanding throughout the twenty years that I called them with questions. This is a great product and a great company. Others would do well to learn from their exmple.
    Pros:
    Excellent product Great technical serv

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this because I have small children that can't keep their hands off the
A/V components. I was worried about the delay time with something like this, but I
have been pleasantly surprised. Not only is there zero delay time with the remote,
but the unit is simple to install and completely cleans up the TV room as all the
components are now in the basement. Absolutely worth the money.
