Alpine

What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Our take on the Alpine SWE-1043

by Gabrielle Thorndyke
Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Affordable Alpine Type-E subwoofers will fill up your ride with big bass without draining your bank account. These low-profile subs handle plenty of power, and still use the same tried-and-true design that's made this line so popular with budget-conscious bassheads.

The 4-ohm SWE-1043 10" subwoofer handles up to 250 watts RMS. Alpine treats the two-layer pulp cone with Kevlar so it won't buckle or distort under heavy use, while the tough Santoprene rubber surround keeps your cone under control for more accurate bass. Extra venting maximizes air flow through your speaker, dissipating heat and increasing your sub's reliability. The heavy-gauge, stamped steel cage holds its shape through the most relentless pounding, so your bass stays tight.

Two trim options allow you to hide your mounting hardware. Use the gasket cover for a simple, unadorned look, or frame your sub with the impact-resistant protective grille.

Get a great deal on this sub when you put together a system. Check out this Alpine dual 10" bass package.

    Features
    Enclosure Compatibility

    Features

Woven Fiber/Kevlar Reinforced Pulp Cone: This Alpine Type-E subwoofer features a two-piece parabolic woven fiber and Kevlar reinforced pulp cone. Kevlar adds strength and tear resistance to the woofer cone while maintaining the benefits of a pulp cone design. The lightweight cotton fiber design provides a faster and more dynamic response from the woofer.

Santoprene Rubber Surround: The high-excursion, tapered half-roll, injection molded Santoprene rubber surround is durable and resistant to the elements, resulting in a very reliable performance. The surround is specially designed to resist deformation that is common in woofers with wide surrounds. This design gives the surround more control over the woofer cone to reduce distortion and possible driver failure.

Progressive Nomex Spiders: This subwoofer utilizes a Progressive Nomex spider for stability and mechanical durability. The custom progressive roll gives the woofer a longer, more linear stroke with maximum centering and restoring force. Special edge control design and Nomex construction provide excellent tear resistance, strength and long-term reliability.

Voice Coil: The Alpine SWE-1043 features a 4-layer single voice coil made from 180-degree high-temperature wire on an aluminum bobbin.

Airflow Optimized Extended/Vented Pole: This SWE-1043 features an extended pole piece which provides optimum airflow for the woofer.

Custom High Strength Steel Basket: The frame is custom stamped from high strength steel.

Speaker Terminals: This Alpine Type-E subwoofer features a pair of heavy duty push-terminals on one side of the woofer's basket that will accommodate up to 8-gauge speaker wire.

Tinsel Leads: The Type-E subwoofer uses insulated 16-gauge stranded tinsel leads.

Gasket Cover: Alpine uses a Concealed Mount Gasket System to cover the mounting screws for a clean look. The black rubber gasket ring comes already installed on the woofer and needs to be removed before drilling the mounting screws (not supplied). The gasket ring then snaps back into place once the woofer is mounted.

Protective Grille: The Alpine SWE-1043 Type-E subwoofer comes supplied with a high impact protective grille. The black plastic grille snaps onto the woofer without the need for any additional hardware. The rubber gasket cover must be removed when using the grille. The grill also hides the mounting screws, as well as protects the woofer. The grille adds 0.9725" to the woofer's height (1.6875").

    Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box Volume: The sealed box sizes recommended by Alpine range from 0.75 cu/ft to 1.5 cu/ft. The ideal recommended volume is 1.0 cu/ft.

Vented Box Volume: The vented box sizes recommended by Alpine range from 1.0 cu/ft to 2.0 cu/ft. The ideal recommended volume is 1.35 cu/ft with a 1-1/4" x 11" x 22-1/2" (long) slot port.

    Alpine Type E failure

Written By Kevin, Lindenhurst IL on Sunday, June 24, 2012

For Christmas I received two of these subs. Everything was cool for 3 months then all of the sudden I start hearing this rattling sound which i figured was a loose plastic component in my trunk. Then after another 2 months it started getting slightly louder. This is when I started to get frustrated and decided to crawl back onto my folded down seats and put my ear right next to my sub and at that moment I realized that my right sub was making this sound and the other one was not. I know if it was blow I would be a lot louder. I think it's either a voice coil or a factory defect.

    Great Subs!!!!

Amazing sound from this thing! I recently set two of these 10's in the back of my Honda along with a SSL 2 channel 1600 watt max MOSFET amplifier and the sound is great! It's almost too loud. Ive got the sub level set at 3 out of 8 on my deck and they still thump hard with almost no distortion. The bass is extremely clear and crisp and can hit well on just about every note. I'd recommend this sub to ANYONE looking to improve the sound system in their car. You can't find a better product for this price.

First off, the speakers sound great! They came with easy to follow directions and after tuning them to my amp, I am very pleased with the sound/performance. I would definitely purchase these again if I was going to build up another system for a different car.

Good subwoofer for a cheap system. I have it running off a lower power alpine amp (something around 150watt) and it works well with the stock speakers in my camry. The plastic grill and rubber trim ring seem to be fairly well built and are most certainly better than nothing for a sub mounted in the trunk of a car.

One negative thing I have to say about it is that it did not come with any mounting hardware. I had to go to the hardware store to buy some wood screws with large heads to hold the sub in the box because the holes in the mounting ring are rather large.

WOW, 1 month of use and the Kevlar (I am assuming) has already started to peel off of the front, ( I live on the coast in northern CA where it does not get that hot, mostly overcast and foggy). I have 2 of these subs matched to an alpine MRP-m500, (what comes in the bass package) and it has just trashed the subs. and yes the amp is tuned, I am an install tech myself.

    Great choice

Written By Matt, Huntsville, TX on Wednesday, March 02, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've owned 2 sets of these, I kept my first 2 until I wore them out (my first two were way back around 2004 when the type E's were white) approximately 5 years later when I bought 2 new type E's, now black and with a grille. The grille is really helpful even though its plastic, its tough. Snaps right in and then the rubber goes on over the holes so it looks real professional. As far as sound goes, everyone that has ridden with me has been jealous. I'm only pushing about 450 watts through my amp, but they definitely sound like they should cost a lot more. I highly suggest these to anyone that doesnt want to pay for the type R's and get just about the same sound quality.

    Very Pleased

Written By Michael, Moncks Corner, SC on Monday, February 14, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After reading the reviews for this speaker, I decided to order it for myself to
replace my old Rockford. I am very pleased with the quality of the Alpine and
the support provided with the package from Crutchfield. Absolutely love the
guard that comes with the speaker too! My yellow lab loves to step on
everything he can in my Sequoia and the guard has already saved my speaker at
least twice. I saw his muddy footprints on it after hunting and was concerned,
but he only managed to get the guard and the speaker is still in perfect shape!!
I highly recommend this for anyone considering the purchase!

    Great

The Sub sounds great. I bought it stand-alone without a box because I was replacing a sub
that broke and already had a box. It was an easy swap-out and it sounds better than the old
one. The Sub hits deep and hard almost as if its a larger diamater woofer. One of these is all
you need to compliment your regular speakers, but I would consider getting another one so
that I could enjoy the bump at a lower volume.

    First Subwoofer

Written By Todd M, Western MA on Wednesday, November 17, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was my first subwoofer purchase so the process was new to me. I wasn't
sure what I needed or wanted. I asked for assistance on the forum and got
prompt responses, thanks there all. I ended up getting this sub mainly due to
the price. I guess Alpine was pushing them since the price
was cut on most of the sites I visited. I ended up getting it from CF due to
the help I received. As far as the sound, I was looking for a little bit more
punch on the low end in my car. I had replaced the head unit, door speakers and
rear decks a little while before this. Though they sounded good, I wanted to
bring it up one more level but not be overwhelming. I didn't need something to
wake up the neighbors. These things sound just fine once the volume is brought
up a bit. I'm not sure if this is typical for subs but the bass doesn't seem to
be brought out at lower levels. Maybe it's because this is Alpine's lower level
model but no matter, I'm pleased with the way it's sounding, no regrets.

Just installed two of these in my Chevy 2500HD pickup. I built my own enclosures (albeit they're a lame 0.48 F^3 each), and i'm powering these Type E's with a Kenwood KAC-8105d amp (500 wrms). I haven't turned the gain up yet, they haven't even broke in yet, and i love them. Lots of punch. The included grills are also a nice touch!
