Poor Quality and Instructions

Written By GaryB, Herriman, Ut on Sunday, May 12, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have bought installation kits from Crutchfield before and was very impressed by the design and instructions. This kit was poor. The quality was bad, I had to buy longer screws to make it work, and the instructions did not give enough detail. I bought this from Crutchfield because of past experiences. I won't take that chance again.
Pros:
Eventually was able to make it work
Cons:
Quality and instructions

fits perfect and looks great in my 2002 camry

Written By Jim, Columbia, MO on Tuesday, March 05, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A few things I learned that might help you as well... I was confused when I opened the package and couldn't seem to find the main frame. After calling tech support, I discovered that the double DIN trim plate and the main frame were already put together. If you plan to build up the kit for a single DIN receiver, you'll need to first remove the double DIN face plate, then insert the single DIN faceplate into the main frame. (A double DIN head unit is one that is tall and fills up the entire space available in the 2002 camry. A single DIN receiver is the shorter style head unit that only takes up half of the stereo opening for the 2002 camry.

"ISO" mounting means the standard factory mounting screw locations on the sides of the receiver. On my 2002 camry, this installation kit is too wide to slide in if you install the ISO spacers on the sides, but if you just screw in the screws so it slightly bends the plastic sides in closer to the sides of the head unit then the assembly will slide right in as a perfect fit.

Also, I was able to insert the ground screw from the harness under the upper mounting bolt on the left side, and between the fake metal layer and the metal frame behind it. This seems to make a good connection with the bare metal frame of the car.

I hope this helps.

Jim
Pros:
Looks very clean and professional after installation.
Cons:
The plastic is very thin and flimsy, so be very careful installing the face plate and installing the assembly.

Does the job

Written By Hash, Memphis, TN on Tuesday, March 05, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Kit will require modification for a DOUBLE DIN Headunit. There are no lines, guides, or perferations for trimming the kit so you have one shot at it. Its not tough though with a dremmel. Cant really complain at the price, but if a higher quality option that had better fitment was available, even at a higher price, I would have went that route.
Pros:
gets the job done.
Cons:
Fit requires a bit of work, quality of materials could be better

So-so

Written By Blind Hog, Alabaster, AL on Saturday, February 02, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a bit confusing to put together, and I was skeptical of the press-to fit sides, but they worked. When installing it into my 2003 Camry, it just refused to go into the slot. After several tries I found that it was necessary to press the sides of the mounting kit inwards against the stereo to make it fit. I used the Sony trim plate instead of the kit trim plate. More trouble than it could have been. I can compare it to the Metra single-din kit we used to install in my son's same generation (generation 5) Camry--the Metra was easier to understand, easier to slip into the car, but its pocket was a royal pain to press onto the faceplate, requiring a lot of force, and flexing the flacepate to make it fit.
Pros:
Works better than it looks like it is going to. Only have to do it once since it's an ISO DIN, from now on, as long as I just buy a DIN receiver, I'll be able just to slip it into the car.
Cons:
A bit confusing to install, requires some troubleshooting to get it to install into the car.

Toyota in-dash kit

Written By Wayne, Wilmington, DE on Monday, January 28, 2013
Installed in a 2004 Toyota Camry
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We needed to get help from Crutchfield as the mounting kit needed modifications and didn't seem like it really was meant for the Pioneer radio or the Camry. The face plate/trim was flimsy and didn't fit right so we didn't use it.
Pros:
With modifications, ultimately was made to work
Cons:
Didn't seem like it was meant to work with the Pioneer radio. Flimsy construction of the face plate trim that didn't fit.

Toyota In-dash Receiver Kit

Written By Anonymous, woodbridge, va on Monday, January 28, 2013
Installed in a 2005 Toyota Camry
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This kit did not fit my application-double din. Using the standard supplied trim ring there was about 1/2 inch space around the radio. Had to modify the other trim ring (double iso) to fill in this space (Crutchfield's soloution). This is a very poor soloution. I will be replacing this kit with one from another vendor.
Pros:
It is a kit, it does some of the job. Low cost.
Cons:
Cheap plastic. Low quality. Did not suite my application.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ordered this kit for my 2006 Camry to go with the Pioneer DEH-X5500HD system I got, and it worked perfectly! Along with the wiring harness, I gave both of 'em to the installers and that was everything they needed to make it work and fit perfectly. Loving my new system now and looks seamless installed into the dash. (I didn't install it myself so I can't comment on ease of installation with accompanying instructions)
Pros:
Everything!
Cons:
None

Agree with what many others have said: it's a bit of a head scratcher to assemble this kit. Instructions aren't too clear. Once assembled it seems kind of flimsy, but mounted in the dash it seems secure enough. Had to wrestle a bit to get the proper angle to slide into the dash of an '02 Camry.

Disappointing for double DIN!

Written By Brian A, Trinity, NC on Monday, January 07, 2013
Installed in a 2005 Toyota Camry
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was a huge disappointment from the start! You have to cut the plastic for a double DIN, which looked horrible. Several pieces were molded poorly whth one piece looking broken then heated back together. If you put it together as it is intended, a double DIN head has huge gaps that I could put my pinky into. I had to cut and hack to even make it look acceptable. If there were a star rating for zero that is what I would have given it!
Pros:
Your better off adapting the factory brackets!!!
Cons:
Everything - moulding, fit, etc.

Finish matches the dash surround perfectly. Fit was perfect. Screw holes lined up. Receiver nice and secure.
Pros:
Looks like original trim
Cons:
Slightest bit of giggling to fit unit into place only assured me of a nice, solid fit.

Works great... wish it wasn't plastic...

The kit works great. It took some fiddling to get put together properly but fits snugly in the dash and does what it is supposed to. I wish there was a metal kit, like the stock Toyota harness but haven't been able to find one.

This install kit was pretty easy to assemble, and it fit perfectly into my 2003 Camry. Deduct a star simply because it isn't the most well constructed item I've seen, but it should be good enough to do the job.

Simple install, flimsy plastic

Written By JohnW, Miami, FL on Monday, April 02, 2012
Installed in a 2005 Toyota Camry
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This kit is relatively simple to put together, although the instructions could be more clear. Once together, it's simple to drop into the dash and matches the factory looks pretty well. The plastic does feel flimsy and weak. When placing the screws, it doesn't take much to over tighten and have the plastic bend.
Pros:
Fits dash well without any need for alterations.
Cons:
Cheap plastic.
