Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Pioneer DEH-P3700MP

by Matt Freeman

Great looks, playback variety, and lots of power — the DEH-P3700MP is one kickin' receiver! Its detachable face sports a multicolor display that's easy on the eyes, and easy to see. It also features a rotary volume knob for quick and easy adjustments.

All your music will sound great, thanks to the heavy-duty, built-in MOSFET50 amplifier. Not only can you play your standard CDs, you can also bring along the MP3 and WMA discs you've burned — that's hours of entertainment at your fingertips. And the Supertuner IIID grabs hold of your favorite AM and FM stations with ease and broadcasts them clearly.

Easy EQ lets you apply five preset EQ curves, then adjust them with the 3-band parametric EQ, so your music will always sound robust. And if you'd like even more power and depth, you can connect external amplifiers to the two sets of preamp outputs and power some subwoofers for hard-hitting bass.

As if that weren't enough, you also have the option of connecting a compatible satellite radio tuner to enjoy over 120 digital channels of music, news, sports, entertainment, and much more (XM or SIRIUS antenna and subscription also required).

Highlights:

  • CD receiver with built-in MOSFET50 amplifier (22 watts RMS/50 peak x 4 channels)
  • detachable face with multicolor display
  • plays CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs, including discs burned with MP3s and WMAs

    Features

MOSFET50 Internal Amplifier: This receiver is equipped with a 50 watts x 4 (peak) MOSFET amplifier for low distortion, high power output.

Satellite Radio Tuner Compatible: This unit can control an optional Pioneer XM or SIRIUS tuner (sold separately).

Easy EQ Curves: This model has "SUPER BASS", "POWERFUL", "NATURAL", "VOCAL", "CUSTOM", and "FLAT" preset EQ curves. The "CUSTOM" curve is one that you create and store in memory. A separate "CUSTOM" curve can be created and stored in memory for each source.

3-Band Parametric Equalizer: This unit includes a 3-band parametric EQ with Selectable Q Factor. You may select a low (40, 80, 100 or 160 Hz), mid (200, 500, 1k or 2 kHz) and high frequency (3k, 8k, 10k or 12 kHz) to boost or cut within a range of -6 dB to +6 dB. The Q factor (slope of the boost or cut) may be selected from one of the following four options: 2N (narrow), 1N, 1W and 2W (wide). Selecting a narrow (steep) Q factor results in frequencies around the center frequency to be affected less by the boost or cut than they are with a wide Q factor. This feature is useful for taming frequency response problems caused by the dimensions, materials and speaker locations of a vehicle.

F.I.E. (Front Image Enhancer): This feature enhances the front image by cutting mid- and high-range frequencies to the rear speakers, limiting their output to low-range frequencies. You may select a cutoff frequency of 100, 160 or 250 Hz.

Loudness Settings: Loudness compensates for deficiencies in the low and high frequencies at low volumes. You can select from three loudness contours:

    • Low: +3.5 dB boost at 100 Hz and a +3 dB boost at 10 kHz
    • Mid: +10 dB boost at 100 Hz and a +6.5 dB boost at 10 kHz
    • High: +11 dB boost at 100 Hz and a +11 dB boost at 10 kHz

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4 dB to +4 dB.

Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit can play MP3/WMA files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. MP3 files with a bit rate from 8-320 kbps, WMA files with a constant bit rate from 48-320 kbps, and WMA files with a variable bit rate from 48-384 kbps are supported.

Compression and BMX Functions: Using the "COMP" (compression) and "BMX" functions, you can adjust the playback quality of the CD player. Each function may be set to one of two levels or off. The "COMP" function compresses the audio signal to eliminate distortion caused by the imbalances between the loudest and softest sounds when played at high volumes. The "BMX" function controls sound reverberations to give playback a fuller sound.

CD-R/CD-RW Skip Function: Some CD-R/W recorders allow you to assign skip ID tags to tracks that you never want to hear. When a track has been assigned a track skip ID, compatible units will recognize the skip ID information and skip over that track. This player recognizes track skip IDs, so CD-R and CD-RW discs with skip ID information will be played back as intended.

Disc Title Memory: Titles of up to 8 characters each can be entered into memory for up to 48 discs. When a compatible changer is connected, titles of up to 8 characters each can be entered into memory for up to 100 discs in the changer.

Optional Aux Input: When used with item 130CDRB10 (sold separately) or item 130CDRB20 (sold separately), this unit can accept input from an auxiliary source, such as a portable CD or MD player. When item 130CDRB10 is used, a CD changer cannot be connected to this unit. Item 130CDRB20 allows you to connect an optional Pioneer CD changer and an auxiliary source to this unit.

    Changer Controls

ITS (Instant Track Selection) Programming: The ITS function can be used to program automatic playback of up to 99 tracks per disc for up to 100 discs. With changers sold before the CDX-P1250 and CDX-P650, up to 24 tracks can be stored in the playlist.

Disc Title Memory: Titles of up to 8 characters each can be entered into memory for up to 100 discs.

Disc Title List: This feature allows you to display disc titles that you have entered. From the list, you can select a disc for playback.

CD Text Display: When used with a CD Text compatible Pioneer CD changer, this unit will display the titles of CD Text encoded discs that are played in the changer. When playing a CD Text disc on a CD Text compatible changer, you cannot switch to the Disc Title Input mode. CD Text disc titles, artist names and track titles longer than 8 characters may be scrolled to reveal the entire string of text.

CD Sound Quality Adjustment: Using the "COMP" (compression) and "DBE" (dynamic bass emphasis) functions, you can adjust the playback quality of the changer. Each function may be set to one of two levels or off. The "COMP" function compresses the audio signal to eliminate distortions caused by the imbalances between the loudest and softest sounds when played at high volumes. The "DBE" function boosts bass frequencies to give your music a more full sound.

Note: For these functions to work, they must be supported by the Pioneer CD changer.

    Note

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the Clock Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the source button turns off audio output, but the clock display and face/button illumination remain on. When the Clock Display has not been turned on, pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely. This unit's illumination and clock are "keyed" only when the Clock Display has been turned on.

Unbelievable overall quality from transaction to self-installation

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Before knowing Crutchfield, I've never done anything on my car. I happened to come across this website and was quite convinced that I can install a high-quality CD/MP3 player on the dashboard. Shipping was lighting quick and the little quidebook and harness (free of charge) helped me get through the task.

I can't still believe I actually did it myself. Plus, the sound quality of this specific player is simply amazing.

For your information, I installed this unit on my 2001 Corolla S. If you have the same car, then you need to get rid of the grey plastic rim and the metal cage(?) which covers about half of the unit on top of the actual body.

This is the first aftermarket deck I've purchased and I'm very happy w/ my purchase. The installation was very smooth, and the adapter that Crutchfield supplied made installation a breeze. The deck itself looks and performs great. A definate step up from the dull factory deck.

    Better than expected

I love this deck. The only thing that I hated about the install was not due to the product. I actually was able to install it pretty quick, but my Cavalier had to be the most difficult car to work with. Thanks to the instructions that came from Crutchfield, I was able to install it no problem. The sound quality is nice and the wiring kit came with the sound retention so it still feels like factory. I plan to look for speakers to replace the factory ones, so I will be looking for great deals.

    Pioneer DEH-P3700MP

Written By Eric, Atlanta, GA on Thursday, November 24, 2005

Acceptable replacement for my tired old radio. Was told the SLA was a ambient noise feature mistakenly by Crutchfield staff. Very disappointed to find out that it's a preset volume feature when changing bands. I was looking for a radio with speed control volume that automatically increased volume with speed and staff was apparently unaware or unable to understand what I wanted.

[Editor's note: The customer is correct, and we have checked to make sure our product database now correctly describes the Source Level Adjustment feature.]

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation was a cinch with Crutchfield's mastersheets. I spent maybe 60-90 minutes crimping the supplied Nissan wiring harness to the Pioneer's harness, double and triple-checking the crimps I made. When it came to actually installing the headunit, every screw was where it was described, and the center console disassembled exactly as it was supposed to. The actual installation into my dash was uneventful.

I put the negative terminal back on my battery, turned the key in the ignition to ACC, and VIOLA!!!! IT WORKED!!! Sound is fantastic, bass (with OEM speakers) was thumpin', highs clear, etc. The unit is easy to use, and, while the volume control is small, it works just fine. This is a fantastic unit; not too much bling, but great power and sound! The pre-set equilizer settings are perfect, and the switchable loudness is a nice touch. While not every CD has text encoded on it, this unit can display it when they do. It'll also play WMA's, MP3 disks, etc. If you want to hook up Sirius or XM, this unit can even control them, too! Next: hook up the MP3 player.

With my order, I bought an adapter that plugs into the back of the headunit and terminated with 2 male RCA plugs. I hit Radio Shack and bought a Monster MP3 cable, took apart the dash again to install the cable, turned on the player.... nothing. Absolutely nothing. 1 quick call to Crutchfield, and it's perfect!! THANKS!

This is a great stereo. It has plenty of features and works great with the ipod interface. The only issues I have with it are the lack of a mute button and the detachable face seems to shift when pressing buttons and seems flimsy. Both issues were rectified by adding on the optional steering wheel mounted remote.

    Great CD Player

Written By Ryan, WV on Sunday, November 06, 2005
Installed in a 1989 Pontiac Sunbird
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this CD player to replace the factory radio and tape deck. Installation went fairly smoothly considering this was my first time installing a car CD player. Crutchfield's installation guide was a big help. However it had one section about taking the antenae apart that I definitely did NOT need to do. So if you a '89 Sunbird, skip that. Crutchfield gave me all the adapters need, and amazingly the order arrived about 27 hours after I ordered it. The included mounting bracket and face plate make it look like it belongs in my car, even though it originally had a very odd setup (radio and tape player were separated by a storage compartment).

The player really brings out the sound, even with factory speakers. You are able to set the EQ settings to your taste. I have driven on some very bumpy roads, and it hasn't skipped yet. It has an aux input, so I will probably be hooking my iPod up to it sometime. The remote is also a nice bonus. The reception on the radio is much better than the factory one.

    The drawbacks:
    - It doesn't read the CD text. You have to manually input the CD names, or just leave them as untitled.
    - The controls to change settings seem a bit more complicated than necessary.
    - There is no dimmer function for the screen or buttons. However they aren't overly bright, so it isn't that big a deal.

Overall it is a great CD player.

Quality head unit for the price

Written By zx10rrider, Salt Lake City, Utah on Thursday, November 03, 2005

There are a few draw backs about this Pioneer (DEH-p3700MP) head unit. However, for the price you may choose to over look certain issues. The Pioneer has a powerful wattage (50X4) rating, and sounds nice when listening to CD's and certain radio stations. The EQ feature is handy and easy to use. However, the display is to small, and the FM/AM preset buttons are tiny. This unit features a "Tuner IIID" feature which is suppose to increase FM/AM radio receiption and sound quality. Radio receiption was average at best. CD sound quality playback is not up to snuff when compared to the Alpine head unit CDA-9847 which I also own. Yes, the Alpine head unit costs $50.00 more, but the Alpine's radio and CD sound quality is a level above the DEH-p3700MP's. Also, the Alpine has a larger, less busy display (which displays more text from enabled CD's) and larger FM/AM preset buttons. The Alpine unit has a lower power rating than the Pioneer (RMS) but sounds more powerful. Also I prefer the Alpine over the Pioneer because of button placement. As a driver your reach is closer with the Alpine when searching for CD title tracks than with the Pioneer.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I shopped around for a Head Unit to replace the factory system in my 1992 Maxima and judging by all the positive reviews here I chose this one. Thanks to Crutchfield's top notch support and included wiring and antenna equipment it was a snap. The hardest part was removing my old factory unit from the bracket as the screws were in extremely tight. Now I need to upgrade my speakers and I know I will be coming back to Crutchfield once I have decided which ones I want.

    missing a few necessities

Written By Bill, Denton, Texas on Saturday, October 29, 2005

Not a bad system, worked well the two weeks I had it. (it was stolen so let that be a lesson to everyone, take your detachable face with you) However the system lacked some key features. For one it was not easy to pause or mute the system with out the remote control, and it also lacked the ability to read regular cd text, you had to manually input the track info. (blah) Anyway all in all a good player if you can keep your hands on it...

Installed in a 1993 Volkswagen Eurovan
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great radio and CD player! I replaced this in a '93 VW Eurovan w/minimal stress, and the best part was my young kids even got to help out with the soldering and heat shrink! The OE unit was really bad (Panasonic made for VW) and even replacement speakers couldn't prolong its life, but, once this unit went in, wow, the audio in the van really came alive. The easy EQ is a nice touch for instantly tailoring sound to specific types of music, and the ability of the unit to play MP3s straight off a CD w/o ripping is really a convenience I wish I had taken advantage of earlier. There's a lot to like about this unit because it has so many features at this pricepoint. The instructions from Crutchfield were incredible, and that alone has got to be worth whatever the price of admission is! Kudos to Crutchfield and Pioneer for a great combo.

    Nice bang for the buck...

Written By DevilPaul, Albany, NY on Saturday, October 08, 2005

Bought this unit to replace the OEM stereo in my 2001 Ford Escape and I'm quite impressed. At first it seemed a little tricky to use all of the features but after spending 30 minutes fooling around with it while reading the manual everything is clear. My Pioneer deck is being used with the factory speakers for now and man... what a difference! Everything sounds so clear to me with this baby driving the audio. The layout is nice, I really like it. My only gripe is how some of the buttons are labelled. I also have an Aiwa MP3 CD player in my 1999 Ford Mustang and the Aiwa has clearly labelled buttons that say "Folder" and "Track Display" when you navigate an MP3 CD. So compared to that unit this is a little different but it's not something I'd consider a deal breaker or giving me a difficult time. Overall this is a great unit for the price and sounds awesome.

    Excellent Unit!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Pioneer DEH-P3700MP is an excellent unit! I replaced my factory 95 Grand Am Se radio with this and I couldn't be happier. The unit brought life into my OEM speakers (though I replaced the 6x9s with Kicker 05KS69 6"x9" 2-Way Speakers and the 4x6 with Kenwood KFC-1069S 4" 2-way Speakers). I love all the features.
The Aux input in the back is great for an MP3 Player - you will need the Pioneer CDRB10 (P-Bus MCD To Aux Input Adapter) though.
Based on my research, I found that the "Monster Cable THX-Certified Mini to RCA Audio Interconnect Cable (8 Feet)" is better than the Monster iCable.it is also cheaper!

Installation was very simply. The free "General Motors Kit 1983-up, S/ 1983-up, S/E, 0/.5/1-inch extension" and "GM Wire Harness receiver, 1985 receiver, 1985-up" was great!

Finally, Crutchfield was excellent. I got all the needed accessories (wire harness and manuals) to install this unit.

    Way better than OE radio

This receiver is worth every cent! Was pretty easy to install, I have a Mercury with premium sound option, so I had to go through the trunk to the dash with a new harness that bypassed all the OE harnesses. This took some time to do, but it was worth it. Awesome sound!!!!
