Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Dual XC4100

by Ken Nail

The Dual XC4100 cassette player will go where most other stereos won't — into the "shaft-style" dash openings of many older cars. But even if the car is dated, the XC4100 is ready for the future — just connect your iPod or other portable player to the handy front-panel auxiliary input, and transport your vintage vehicle into the digital age.

Expand your system and ramp up the output by connecting an amp or powered sub to the preamp outputs. And track down your favorite stations with the AM/FM tuner's old-school analog tuning knob — an LED indicator lets you know when you've got an FM stereo signal locked in.

Highlights:

  • cassette player in shaft-style chassis
  • FM LED indicator
  • bass boost
  • preamp outputs
  • front-panel auxiliary input
  • 15 watts x 2 peak power output
  • tape frequency response 60-6,300 Hz
  • tape signal-to-noise ratio 40 dB
  • warranty: 1 year
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

    Dual XC4100

Written By Anonymous, Florida on Friday, May 04, 2012

I didn't want to cut the dash in my car to put a new style radio in it so I bought this Dual brand radio. After one year the cassette player stopped working. It hardly puts out any watts and the quality just isn't there.
    Pros:
none, there are plenty other options for a old school knob style radio.
    Cons:
produces less watts than factory 1983 radio. Cassette player broke after one year.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good selection of features, and low cost provided best bang for the buck for this "retro" shaft-mount radio in my CJ7 Jeep. I did not have to drill or cut my dash, and was able to quickly adjust the shaft screws for the proper mounting depth. The AUX input is a very nice feature allowing me to plug in my iPod Shuffle. I need to also compliment Crutchfield's technical service department. When the AM Band reception did not work, they actually helped me troubleshoot a problem with my antenna, which fixed the problem. My first purchase from Crutchfield....I will be back.

    Works for me!

Written By MidnightMike, Alsip, Illinois on Thursday, June 30, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I own a 1968 Buick Skylark, and it came with a AM radio, and that one lonely speaker on top of the dash. I wanted to keep the original look of the radio in the dash so I mounted this radio in the glove box, and installed two 6X9 speakers in the back. This little radio packs a nice punch, and I love the AUX input so I can play my MP3 player as well. I like the manual tuning feature on this radio because I do not have a dedicated line coming from the car to keep the clock, and pre-sets intact from a modern digital radio. Every time I shut the car off, all my pre-sets would be gone, so this Dual works great! I leave it set to the oldies channel here in Chicago when I want to listen to the radio, and when I want to listen to my MP3 mix from my MP3 player, I just plug it in. Great product, and easy to install. I am buying another one for my other '68!

    Okay, but too many shortcomings

Written By Ruffin, Charleston, SC on Wednesday, May 04, 2011

I replaced an older stock radio with this to add its auxiliary port, letting me listen to iPods
and my Android phone. Mission marginally accomplished. There are some drawbacks,
namely max volume, lack of station favorites, two speaker output, and no cassette
    rewind.

Remember the five or so buttons old dial-based radios had that allowed you to
remember stations? None of that here. You have to retune from scratch each time. No
favorites. It does tune fairly well, but tuning anew each time is a pain.

Many podcasts are very quiet. The deck's built-in amplifier isn't much, and won't let me
make up for the podcasts' low volume. I can't listen to many podcasts with the windows
down, and struggle with a few even with them up. (I've got normal hearing.)

Remember that most cars these days -- even my regular cab Dakota -- have at least four
speakers. This only has outputs for two.

The lack of a cassette rewind is regrettable. I've also had the tape player stop working
with a few tapes, once making a fairly nasty smell. (The deck still works.) You also can't
listen to the radio while fast forwarding.

This is a no-nonsense, bare bones deck, but there are stronger, fully-featured, CD-
based, auxiliary port equipped decks on sale here for a few bucks more. Unless you
absolutely have to have a cassette player, trade up. Even if you do, check out your other
options. If you've got an old tape walkman, consider hooking that up to your CD deck's
    aux port!

reception the the old one ever had. Great product....Thanks.....Will do business

    simple and good

Written By gcy, arizona on Wednesday, October 06, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I tried a Retrosound unit in my 1978 Ford pickup before this one. The Retrosound was complicated with the moveable shafts (both in/out and left/right), and took a long time to get right. It was fragile, too. The Dual is extremely simple. The shafts are fixed and fit the openings perfectly. The entire unit is a model of simplicity. It turns on instantly... nothing to run through before playing music. The volume knob adjusts with less than one turn, stop to stop. Nothing digital to wait on. The tuner knob is quit sensitive because it covers the entire band width in a small distance. IPOD hookup couldn't be easier, just plug it in or unplug it. I'm listening to some Polk 6.5" speakers, and haven't had any clipping issues so far. I do plan on using a 50 watt amp. There are no bass/treble adjustments, only bass boost - on/off. I'm delighted with this simple radio/cassette/ipod unit. A snap to install. No delay on startup, easy volume control, good looking and inexpensive. Seems sturdy, too. My Ford pickup isn't exactly an audiophile's dream listening environment, so this unit is doing a good job for it's intended purpose. Many thanks. I'm telling my friends.

A very fine classic radio that fits shaft style or DIN 1.0 mounts...

Written By Yekta, Temple City, California on Wednesday, August 04, 2010

This is a very fine, classic radio which fits not only shaft-style openings, but also fits the DIN 1.0 openings as evidenced by the two elliptical, double-key holes on each side of the front bezel, and the included DIN 1.0 sleeve. Only the plastic fit kit needs to be modified (cut some tabs off as indicated, and round the corners to match the opening), to complete the JEEP Wrangler radio opening to DIN1.0. The JEEP middle dashboard, when installed back, then covers the key holes on the front bezel of the radio, which prevents it from being pulled out easily even if you have the keys. Should you need a little more power and want to add two more speakers for four channel (front and rear) audio, you need to buy an amplified equalizer that takes direct speaker outputs as inputs and supplies four speaker outputs (2 front and 2 rear) . The equalizers are DIN 0.5 size and they mount almost anywhere convenient, with some ingenuity without drilling any holes, depending on the model of the vehicle. You would be surprised when you hear how well this radio sounds, especially with an equalizer that lets you tailor your speaker outputs to the vehicle environment.

ThIs radio is great with a classic. Fits like a glove in old Bimmer's and plays cassettes like a charm. I had a 20 year old Blaupunkt radio before, and this was easily comparable. Very simple and very much perfect. The only thing i wish it had was a way to reverse the tape direction.
