Receivers: Your ticket to sensational sound

Your receiver powers your speakers and lets you connect and select your entertainment sources. But a great receiver does a lot more — it ignites your emotions. From the passion of a favorite musical artist, to the crossfire of a super-charged movie soundtrack, to the intensity and immersion of a fast-paced video game, your receiver is the key to experiencing and enjoying it in full.

Our take on the Onkyo TX-SR605

by Dave Bar

Onkyo designed the versatile TX-SR605 to deliver exceptional audio and video performance from today's newest generation of high-def components. This future-ready receiver offers the latest HDMI capability along with highly advanced audio and video processing for a cutting-edge home theater experience. For example, it can decode Dolby® True HD and DTS-HD® Master Audio — two new high-resolution surround sound formats found on many Blu-ray players and discs.

Flexible video connections
The 'SR605's 1080p-compatible HDMI inputs let you hook up two high-def sources and switch easily between them. Analog-to-HDMI video conversion adds to the convenience, letting you pass the video signals from all your components to your TV via one HDMI connection. This simplifies hookup and maintains the best picture quality possible for every source in your system. For televisions without a digital input, component video conversion offers similar convenience in the analog video realm.

Fast, accurate setup
For the most accurate home theater sound possible, the 'SR605 includes Audyssey 2EQ, a sophisticated speaker calibration system from Audyssey Laboratories. Using the included microphone, the receiver analyzes sound from two different listening positions, then automatically adjusts level, equalization, and delay settings for each of your speakers. You'll get clear, precise, natural sound that's optimized for your room.

Flexible entertainment options
This receiver's dual-room/dual-source audio capability lets you enjoy home theater in your main room while a housemate listen to stereo music in a second room. You can integrate your iPod® by adding Onkyo's handy control dock. The 'SR605 is also XM Ready and compatible with XM's HD surround music channels. Or connect an optional SiriusConnect™ home tuner kit to enjoy SIRIUS satellite programming. (Subscriptions required for XM and SIRIUS.)

Features

7.1 Channel Amplifier: The Onkyo TX-SR605 features a 90 watts RMS x 7-channel amplifier in 8-ohms at 20 to 20,000 Hz with a total harmonic distortion of 0.08%.

WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology): This technology uses low-negative-feedback circuit topology for accurate signal reproduction, improved dynamic signal-to-noise ratio, and better delivery of power peaks.

Digital-to-Analog Converters (DACs): To decode and playback high-resolution recordings, this receiver is equipped with 192kHz/24-bit DACs.

Faroudija DCDi Edge Technology: The Onkyo TX-SR605 utilizes deinterlacing chips featuring Faroudja DCDi Edge technology to convert 480i interlaced video signals to 480p progressive scan signals.

Video Conversion: The Onkyo TX-SR605 will also convert incoming analog composite video, S-video, and component video signals to HDMI so you can connect all your video sources through the receiver and then to your TV via HDMI to give you the best picture quality possible. The receiver can also convert composite video and S-video signal to component video; useful if your television does not feature an HDMI input.

HDMI Switching: The TX-SR605 has two HDMI version 1.3a inputs and one HDMI version 1.3a output for connecting DVD players, HDTV set-top boxes, and other video components through the receiver to your TV or projector. The HDMI cables will pass digital audio and video. The HDMI inputs are compatible with DVI, so TVs and displays with a DVI input can be connected by using an HDMI-to-DVI adapter cable, along with audio cables. The receiver uses HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection), so only HDCP-compatible components can display the picture. The HDMI inputs can accept and switch 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p signals to a TV, monitor, or projector. Each of the HDMI inputs can be assigned to any of the three rear panel A/V inputs (DVD, VCR/DVR, CBL/SAT).

Component Video Switching: In addition to HDMI, composite video, and S-Video switching, this unit can switch between high definition component video sources. There are 3 component video inputs and 1 component video output. The component video inputs and outputs have a bandwidth of 5Hz to 50MHz.

RIHD (Remote Interactivity Over HDMI): RIHD synchronizes RIHD-compatible displays and components for integrated control via HDMI connection and use of the receiver's IR remote control. RIHD provides the following integrated operations.

  • Control: this function allows CEC-standard-compatible equipment connected to HDMI and RIHD-compatible equipment to be operated together with the Onkyo receiver
  • Power Control: provides an electrical power link between the TX-SR605 and RIHD-compatible components through the HDMI connection and allows for those components to turn on or off with the receiver
  • TV Control: allows you to control the TX-SR605 from an RIHD-compatible TV that is connected via HDMI, currently compatible with Panasonic Televisions featuring EZ Sync

Satellite Ready: The Onkyo TX-SR605 features proprietary ports on the rear panel for XM and Sirius Satellite Radio connection. In addition to the following optional satellite tuners needed (sold separately), you will need a subscription to XM and/or Sirius Satellite radio.

  • XM Satellite Radio Ready: The receiver can be connected to the optional XM Home Mini-Tuner and Home Dock (part # 700XMTUNPK, sold separately), allowing you to receive XM Satellite Radio through the TX-SR605. You can search XM radio stations by Channel, Category or Direct Tuning. You can also choose to display the following XM information on the receiver's display - Channel Name, Channel Number, Category Name, Artist Name or Song Title.
  • Sirius Satellite Radio Ready: The TX-SR605 can also be connected to the optional SiriusConnect Home Tuner kit (part # 607SCH1, sold separately), which allows you to receive Sirius Satellite Radio through the receiver. You can search Sirius radio stations by Channel, Category or Direct Tuning. You can also choose to display the following Sirius information on the receiver's display - Channel Name, Channel Number, Category Name, Artist Name or Song Title.

Note: You can store a combination of up to 40 of your favorite XM channels, Sirius Channels and AM/FM radio stations as presets.

Multi-Zone: The TX-SR605 features the following Zone 2 connections so you can listen to one input source in your main room and a different source in another room.

  • Line Out: By using the line-level outputs on the TX-SR605 you can connect an external receiver or integrated amplifier in a second room, allowing you to listen to 7.1 surround in the main room and play a different audio source in another room of your home. The volume of Zone 2 is controlled by your optional integrated amp.
  • Speaker Out: By using the speaker-level outputs on the TX-SR605 you can directly connect a secondary pair of speakers in another room of your home, allowing you to listen to 5.1 surround sound in your main room and play a different audio source in the other room. The volume of Zone 2 is controlled by the TX-SR605 receiver.

Automatic Speaker Setup: With the supplied speaker setup microphone, the Audyssey 2EQ Automatic Speaker Setup function can measure and correct for the acoustics in your listening room. The speaker setup function measures the test tone output by each speaker and automatically determines the number of speakers connected, their sizes, crossover frequencies, and the distance from each speaker to the listening position. The supplied microphone is approximately 2" in diameter, 1" tall, and has a 19.5' cable that plugs into the front of the receiver. There is a threaded insert on the bottom of the microphone so it can be mounted on a tripod for accurate listening position placement. Three listening position measurements are taken, one primary and two secondary, to optimize the surround effect for a broad area. If you wish to setup the speakers manually, you can follow the procedure for Speaker Configuration.

Speaker Distance: The distance from your listening position to each speaker can also be set manually. The front speaker distance can be set from 1 to 30 feet in 1-foot increments. The center and subwoofer settings can be up to 5 feet more or 5 feet less than the distance you set for the front speakers (30 feet max). The settings for the surround left, surround right, surround back left, and surround back right speakers are each individually adjustable, and they may be up to 5 feet more or 15 feet less than the distance you set for the front speakers (30 feet max).

Speaker Levels: You can manually adjust the level of individual speakers between -12dB and +12dB; -15dB to +12dB for the subwoofer.

Double Bass: You can enhance the bass output by activating the Double Bass function. This function allows you to feed bass frequencies to the front left and right channels and to the subwoofer. Double Bass can be set only when the subwoofer is set to On and the front speakers are set to Large.

Adjustable Highpass Crossover: This receiver has a built-in high-pass crossover for any of the speakers set to Small. This setting is available when the subwoofer is set to Yes. The frequencies that you can choose from are 40, 50, 60, 80, 100, 120, 150, and 200 Hz. Frequencies lower than the set crossover point are output by the subwoofer.

LFE Low-Pass Crossover: With this setting, you can specify the cutoff frequency of the receiver's LFE channel's low-pass filter, which can be used to filter out unwanted hum from your powered subwoofer. You can select either 80, 100, or 120 Hz.

Subwoofer Input Sensitivity: You can change the receiver's subwoofer input sensitivity to match your DVD player's LFE channel output. You can select from 0, 5, 10, or 15 dB.

Equalizer: The EQ function offers three options:

  • Off: flat response
  • Audyssey: adjusts the frequency response of all speakers to correct the effects of room acoustics, based on measurements taken using the included microphone
  • Manual: the five band equalizer can be adjusted independently for each of the seven full range speaker channels (front, center, surround, and surround back), the EQ bands are centered at 80, 250, 800, 2500, and 8000 Hz (subwoofer EQ bands are centered at 40, 80, and 160 Hz) they are adjustable from -6 to +6 dB in 1 dB increments

Bi-Amp Speaker Connections: The Front Left/Right and Surround Back Left/Right terminal posts can be used together to bi-amp a front pair speakers that support bi-amping, providing separate tweeter and woofer power feeds, giving you improved bass and treble performance. When bi-amping, the Front Left/Right terminal posts connect to the front speakers' tweeter terminals while the Surround Back Left/Right terminal posts connect to the front speakers' woofer terminals. During bi-amping, the receiver is able to drive up to a 5.1 speaker system.

iPod Compatible: The DS-A1 or DS-A2 Remote Interactive Dock for iPod (item #'s 580DSA1 and 580DSA2) provide an interface between an iPod digital media player and Onkyo TX-SR605. Once the iPod is docked you can control basic functions such as volume control, play, stop, and skip via the Onkyo system's RI-compatible wireless remote control. The dock also charges the battery in the iPod, and allows you to view digital photos and video on an Onkyo home theater system.

Assignable Digital Inputs: The TX-SR605 has 4 assignable digital audio inputs (2 optical/2 coaxial) allowing you to specify which input source is connected to which digital input jack.

Multi-Channel Input: The receiver is equipped with a 7.1 multi-channel input for compatibility with external decoders or high resolution audio players such as DVD-Audio or SACD. The input consists of left front, right front, center, subwoofer, left surround, right surround, left surround back and right surround back RCA inputs.

Audio/Video Sync: Occasionally the audio and video signals are not properly synchronized, typically when using a progressive scanning DVD player. You can correct this by delaying the audio; options are 0 (no delay) to 100 milliseconds, in 20 millisecond steps.

Bass and Treble: You can adjust the bass and treble for the front speakers. You can boost or cut low-frequency sounds output by the front speakers from -10 to +10 dB in 2 dB steps. You can boost or cut high-frequency sounds output by the front speakers from -10 to +10 dB in 2 dB steps.

Direct Mode: This mode delivers pure sound with minimum sound quality adjustment and filtration. The sound recorded for the right and left front channels is output to the right and left front speakers only and not output to the subwoofer, center, or rear speakers.

Listening Modes: This receiver incorporates a powerful and highly accurate 32-bit DSP processor and a wide variety of listening modes to bring you maximum enjoyment from your audio and video software. The listening modes include:

  • Direct: audio from the input source is output directly with minimal processing
  • Stereo: sound is output from the front left and right speakers and subwoofer

    • Unplugged: for acoustic instruments, vocals, and jazz
    • Studio-Mix: suitable for rock or pop
    • TV Logic: adds realistic acoustics to TV shows
    • All Ch Stereo: ideal for background music
    • Full Mono: all speakers output the same sound in mono
    • Theater-Dimensional (T-D): enjoy virtual 5.1 surround with two or three speakers (you can set the virtual surround imaging to Narrow or Wide)

Note: You can assign a default listening mode to each input source that will be selected automatically when you select each input source.

Dolby Pro Logic II & IIx Music Modes: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II or IIx Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust:

  • Panorama: broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect, especially effective when there is limited output from the surround channels, panorama can be turned on/off in the menu
  • Dimension: allows you to move the sound field forward or backward
  • Center Width: allows you to adjust the width of the center channel

Center Image: In the DTS Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 5 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).

CinemaFilter: Using the CinemaFilter you soften overly bright movie soundtracks. Movie soundtracks are typically mixed for a large theater (relative to your home theater) with lots of soft seats and thick curtains on the walls. Home theater settings often lack these high frequency absorbing wall treatments, making the soundtrack sound too bright. CinemaFilter accounts for this and for many movies sounds more natural at home.

On-Screen Display: In addition to the receiver's front panel display, the unit features an on-screen menu for easier viewing and operation. You can select the type of TV screen you are using from a 4:3 to 16:9 aspect ratio so that the menu details are displayed properly. You can also specify where the menu operation details are displayed on the screen - Top or Bottom.

IntelliVolume: You can set the input level of each input source. This useful if some of your AV components are louder or quieter than others. IntelliVolume does not affect Zone 2.

Volume Setting: You can specify the maximum level volume as well as the power on volume level. You can also specify the headphone volume level relative to the main volume setting.

Late Night Feature: The Late Night feature limits the dynamic range of Dolby Digital recordings. Limiting the dynamic range makes it easier to find a volume that ensures the quiet sounds are not too quiet and the loud sounds are not too loud for night time listening. This allows you to comfortably listen to without the need to constantly adjust the volume to keep from waking family/neighbors. The choices are: Off, Low, and High.

Note: This feature only works with Dolby Digital Encoded software and the depth of the feature will vary based on the individual software package.

Sleep Function: From the remote, you can set the unit to automatically turn off after as much as 90 minutes or as little as 10 minutes; choices are presented in 10 minute increments.

Display Dimmer: The display brightness has three settings; Dim, Dimmer, and Normal.

Remote Control

Multi-brand Remote: The supplied RC-682M wireless remote is a multi-brand remote. The remote is pre-programmed to operate Onkyo components, as well as other popular brands of equipment, including DVD players, satellite receivers, cable boxes, VCRs, and televisions.

Input and Output Notes

Multi-channel Input: Labeled DVD, the TX-SR605 has a multi-channel input for connecting a DVD player, a high resolution audio player (such as a DVD-Audio or SACD player), or an external decoder. The input consists of left front, right front, center, subwoofer, left surround, right surround, left surround back and right surround back RCA inputs. You can also connect a component using only left and right audio jacks, if desired. Additionally there are composite video, S-video, and component video jacks for this input.

Headphone Output: This receiver has a standard 1/4" headphone output on the front panel. The speaker outputs are muted when headphones are plugged in.

Speaker Outputs: There are color-coded binding post connectors for the left front, right front, center, left surround, right surround, left surround back, and right surround back speakers. The binding posts are not 5-way because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs. There are spring terminals for the Zone 2 speakers.

RI Remote Control Jack: The 1/8" RI remote control jack allows you to connect this receiver to other compatible Onkyo components.

Front Panel Inputs: The TX-SR605 features an S-video, composite video, stereo RCA, and a optical digital input on the front panel of the receiver.

Great Receiver!

Written By Jason, Cleveland, OH on Friday, May 23, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this as a replacement for a previous JVC 412b that I got from Crutchfield. The JVC claimed a lot and had a lot of bells and whistles but, ultimately failed to work properly. Even after trying to work thru the problems and troubleshoot for a month or so, Crutchfield's wonderful Customer Service still allowed a return for credit towards a new receiver.
This Onkyo is much larger than the JVC and was at first aesthetically an issue for my wife! However, immediately this one Con was overshadowed by the ease of use, THE SINGLE REMOTE FOR ALL COMPONENTS(!!) and the incredible sound. Plus - BONUS - it works as described - unlike the JVC.
As indicated above, the most amazing thing Onkyo does is send a separate booklet with component codes. It had more codes than I have ever seen, even when searching online.! It even contains the proper codes to porgram the remote for Satellite and Cable receivers! II had just purchased the DirecTV HD Receiver that does not even have a manufacturer name associated with it. Onkyo's book lists the receivers by providers of cable or satellite channels which made it very user friendly.
Finally the audessy automatic sound field set up was easy and robust. Using three different sound test from different areas of the room the Onkyo receiver sets up your speakers for best sound performance. Definitely one of the best purchases I have made. Great bang foryour buck!

great value!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just turned my living room into a small theatre. The sound is awesome. I'm using polk speakers with yamaha center and sub. Having the Ipod integration is great with on screen display. No more cd player.
A pleasant surprise was to have zone 2 allowing different source to the main source. So while the kids are watching tv, we can listen to music outside.
It was a little tricky getting speaker wire through the terminals but nothing major and zone 2 could have been better then the spring clip connection.
of course having a remote that takes care of ALL of your components is great.
As always crutchfield is a great source, I have been buying from them for 15 years. It certainly beats going to the big box stores and talking to the stock boy.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sounded great right out of the box before I made any tweaks.

I 'm only using the 5.1 setup right now as I don't have room for more speakers.Plenty of soundfields that I may or may not use.90 watts per channel in this unit is more than what I need now,but it is there when I want to crank it.
I am currently using a high-end speaker set up and it sounds smooth.
The HDMI connection is one of the reasons I purchased this unit.I want one connection for audio and video...not the case in some cheaper models.
Out of the receiver into the tele'...out of the dvd into the TX-SR
I have made my adjustments with the sound accordingly. This unit is very future proof for (yet again) a new dvd player....Blu-Ray of course!
I think this model is getting pushed for out another in the future as is the case with all of my electronic purchases.I'm very happy with Onkyo and the service from Crutchfield.

p.s. always do your research

Best value

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm a big Onkyo fan; this is my 3rd Onkyo receiver. I upgraded so I could have HDMI switching/conversion with my new living room setup. What I really like are the features, obviously, and the big Onkyo sound really fills a room. The amplifier is rock solid and able to sound as big or as small as you want it to be. The included microphone simplifies room setup, as it listens to each of your speakers and adjusts crossover frequencies and output level automatically. I found this to work well for everything but the subwoofer. I had to increase the subwoofer's output to make everything sound just right. The on-screen menus were very nice to have; it is much easier to find your way through various options than using the small display on the receiver. The last minor issue I had was a video delay when switching sources. For 2-3 seconds, the screen goes blank. This is just a minor annoyance, however. Overall, this receiver exceeded my expectations!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I decided to upgrade my old Sony Pro-logic receiver to the digital age, I talked to a Crutchfield rep. We discussed what I was looking for, and this perfectly fit the bill. Setup was extremely easy, and the sound is fantastic. I use a lot of digital audio and component cables since I don't have HD yet. I've been so impressed at how smart this unit is. There is an on-screen menu for setting which audio input goes with which video, but it always figured it out on its own (or guessed well)! This is definitely 5-stars for the money. There are better receivers, but you'll probably have to pay a LOT more. The only thing that would have been really nice is an extra couple HDMI inputs.
I also have to say the Crutchfield tech support is awesome. They've figured out every strange problem I've encountered.

I couldn't have asked for a better addition to my home theater system.
Price and performance are to good to pass up. I have tried other brands
yet none have matched the performance of my Onyyo TX-SR605. I also
purchased the Bose Acoustimass 10 and man oh man I'm in heaven. With
the Onkyo TX-SR605 and Bose Acoustimass 10 you can't go wrong. Thanks
Crutchfield...excellent price and excellent customer service.

Onkyo TX-SR605

Written By Patrick, Smyrna, GA on Wednesday, April 23, 2008

Good receiver for the money. Gets four stars for a bit of a quality control issue--the Audessey setup was bugged on the first unit, so if you get very weak tones while performing setup, send it back for a new one--but Crutchfield makes that process painless.

Sound is great (5.1) and video is problem-free, hooked up to both an upconverting DVD player and media PC through HDMI.

Very Good Value.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit is my second Onkyo. I have the 805 running my main AV system. I was looking for an inexpensive unit to use with my PC and to power my studio monitors. I didn't really need all of the features on the 605 for what I am using it for but I figured that at this price level it is a bonus to have them if I decide to expand my system to include video. I knew that the 805 was a great piece of equipment so I put Onkyo on my list for my studio system. After comparing features and power ratings amongst various power amps, integrated amps and AV receivers, I felt that the 605 offered the best value with greater flexibility for future needs. I also felt comfortable that it would sound good and be reliable since I knew that the 805 has served me well. It sounds wonderful when playing music through my PC and has ample power to drive my studio monitors for mixing. At this price level , the Onkyo 605 stands way above the rest in both sound and features.

Great Receiver.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have purchase two Onkyo TX-SR605 in the last couple of months. I did a lot of research before I made my first purchase and found that nothing at this price point compared. The Onkyo TX-SR605's price tag and feature set is impossible to beat. I felt a little discouraged by various negative reviews I read, but decided to make the purchase anyway.

Now that I have purchased and setup two Onkyo TX-SR605s I can say that I made the right choice. The unit is easy to setup and is exactly what I expected for the price. There are a lot of features that would make the receiver better, but again, for the price Onkyo did a great job.

The only fault I could find with the unit is that if you use your DVD Player, as I do, to play CDs then you may have a small problem. If you use an HDMI cable to connect your DVD Player to the Onkyo TX-SR605 then you will find that the connected TV will need to be turned on before the sound will be heard. Once the sound comes on, you can turn the TV off and the Onkyo TX-SR605 will continue to pass the audio through to the speakers. I worked around this issue by connecting my DVD Player to my Onkyo TX-SR605 via HDMI for video and a Toslink optical cable for audio. By doing so, the Onkyo TX-SR605 will send the audio through to the speakers without having to have the TV turned on. This is only a solution if you are not using a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player that can output Dolby True HD or DTS HD audio. These signals cannot be passed via optical, but only via HDMI.

Solid & Flexible Performer

Written By Mike, Asheville, NC on Thursday, March 27, 2008

I have had this unit for a couple of months now and am very pleased. It replaced a Yamaha 5.1 that I liked a lot, but which did not have HDMI conversion or switching. Having only one media cable to the TV is important when the TV is wall mounted. In my opinion, the Onkyo sounds better than the Yamaha with the same home theatre speakers. I believe that the automatic speaker set up with the included microphone attained a much better room wide balance than I had previously had. Wonderful feature. Eliminates a lot of experimentation and guesswork.

The Yamaha has now found a good home in my brother's wine tasting room. As an audio receiver, it was excellent. Just lacking in video compatibility.

The HDMI conversion of the Onkyo 605 is also an excellent feature. You can send signals in w/ component, S-video, or composite and it converts them without further to do. This allows you to continue to utilize older components and satellite boxes which lack some of the most modern output hook-ups. At the same time, the features and flexibility of this unit should allow for years of enjoyment due to all the compatibility which is built in.

Played around a bit with the up conversion feature, but the ghosting line at the top of the picture when enabled was more distracting than the improvement in the picture from up converting SD inputs. Can't criticize a manufacturer for a feature that they include, but don't advertise.

I highly recommend the Onkyo TSXR605 and have no regrets with this purchase whatsoever.

quirky praises & criticisms

Written By ncruzer, Brooklyn, NY on Thursday, March 27, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Other than the great value and all that has been said before, I'll say:
PROS:

1)The included remote is "universal" and controls my old school panasonic VCR, my non progressive scan Pioneer DVD player as well as my brand spanking new HDTV LCD Sony Bravia, thank heavens, because even I was getting crazy with all the remotes. Most functions of all the devices remain, including setup fucntions.

2) The Onkyo HDMI connection works flawlessly with my Sony Bravia HDTV, turn on/off the TV and the receiver turns on/off.

3) Auto detects quality of audio source and auto switches

CONS:

I have only two criticisms which IMO DID NOT warrant dropping my rating from a 5 to a 4.

1) There are no separate AM/FM presets. For example, if you are listening to say an FM station preset to #3 and then want to quickly change channels to hear the weather, on what would be say AM preset #1 on another receiver, you can't, because the AMs are preset to say #20 and above, after the 19 FM preset channels.
Of course you could make the presets any order you want with any combo of AM/FM but I feel it would have been better to have separate lines of presets for both AM and FM.

2) You can't (or I haven't been able to figure out how to) save different speaker settings. You can't save like a "husband" setting (full 5.1 with bass turned up) VS a "wife" setting (much less bass w/o surround).
I wish I could set up each "version" and just select between "husabnd" or "wife" when appropriate.
The individual speakers are easliy adjusted using an on screen menu for crossover Hz, distance from listener, room position and +/- db level, so right now I have a little "sticky note" with our individual preferances and just change settings depending on who is going to be watching what.... but it sure gets tedious.

I hope I shed some unique insight.
Still a TREMENDOUS value for what you get

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Most of the reviews that I read stated that this reciever is worth the money for what you get - I couldn't agree more. This replaced a Sony receiver I have had for 5 years. It is interesting in a 5.1 set up that you don't know what you are missing until you have a direct comparison. This Onkyo was not only easy to set up but the sound was much improved for me.

Not sure if it is because the receiver set up with mic balanced better or if the reciever is just better quality. Either way I am very satisified. I have this reveiver driving a 5.1 package and really like the sound during a show.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

excellent. i ended up swapping for same in black to match my other components but frankly i should've stayed with the silver to better see it - but black is fine since i don't actually need to look at it. I use it with directv hddvr & panasonic hard drive dvr - and sony v3000 hdtv. I actually use the hdmi for video but pipe the sound via optical through onkyo to the surround speaker setup - which was the easiest ever to set up through the onkyo's automated feature. I just need to add rear surround speakers to get to the full 7 now!

Anybody with a white rf remote for directv can use code 31320 to program the remote av1 or 2 for the onkyo - and use the # keys on the remote to switch between component inputs on the onkyo. Love this receiver. Sound is crisp, just like the picture. Everything looks spectacular. I especially love the upconversion so I can take advantage of the hundreds of DVDs I've already recorded from directv dvr to panasonic dvr to dvd. Not to mention store-bought dvds.

Auto setup for the distance and location of the specific speakers was a tremendous help. Very cool. I'd buy another in a hot second and crutchfield is THE place to buy. They didn't charge me up front for the black one and sent it to me even before i'd sent the silver one back for the exchange. Who else would do that for their customer?!

can't go wrong for the price

Written By Anonymous, Annandale, VA on Friday, March 14, 2008

sent back a Yamaha that didn't switch for this one that did and is $100 cheaper. Isn't quite as powerful but certainly does the job, and worth it to only have one HDMI cable running from it to the TV. Set up & hook up is pretty easy, although I do not know why you have to tell it if you have plugged in to which jacks - you would think it could tell on its own. I bought two, one for the basement and one for upstairs and they are easy enough to operate that my kids can do it.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am in no way an audio/visiual expert. I wanted something simple with
HDMI switching and I got more with this receiver than I bargined for, its
awesome. I have a set of Polk Audio surround sound speakers (RM650 I
think) and they sound great for a lower end set of speakers.. THe Oynko
Ipod dock used with this system is also a great thing. I almost purchased
the Onkyo SR505 but with some help from Crutchfield customer support I
realized that I would spend the additional money (price diffrence between
605 & 505)on audio cables since the SR505 does not do true HDMI
switching. I have an HD DVR cable box and a Sony upconvert player hooked
up to a Panasonic 50" plasma, and I absolutely love my system. All my
componets (minus the ipod dock) are hooked up via 3 HDMI cables (two
input/ 1 output) . I still need to do some inverstigateing on the settings for
my receiver as far as making sure its in 5.1 dolby mode, or whatever it
needs to be for certain movies but this receiver is great. By the way when
using the set up microphone to set your speakers up with this receiver
make sure your wifes not asleep, the chirping sounds and the sub-woofers
thumps will surely wake her up! By the way, for those of us with your TV on
the wall and no RCA jacks easily accesible, this receiver has auxilary jacks
on the front ,so with the HDMI output you can hook your Digital camcorer,
playstatioin 2, or whatever items you have easily directly to your receiver to
use as opposed to hooking it up to your TV. Best buy in recivers out today,
more receiver than the average person will need, love it. Crutchfield tech
support was awesome in instructing me how to set up my HOme Theatre
system.

great receiver

Written By ken, bartlett, tn on Monday, March 03, 2008

I have had this unit for about two weeks now and it is spectacular. The sound from this receiver is awesome and this is one of the best buys in midrange receivers right now. My only complaint is that it gets very hot, even at low volumes. This replaced a txsr602 that was about three years old. The txsr602 didnt get this hot even at higher volume levels. I have plenty of ventilation as this sits on a tv stand which allows plenty of ventilation. Once again the crutchfield experience is awesome!!!!
