Why should I put a marine receiver on my boat?

Few things are better than relaxing to your favorite music out on the water. Sure, you can put a car stereo in your boat, but a marine receiver is designed to stand up to the damage that humidity, moisture, and salt can cause, so it'll have a much longer life span in your vessel. And today's marine receiver offers all the features you want when you're cruising, including iPod controls, satellite radio capability, and connections for the outboard amps in your system.

Our take on the Sony CDX-M60UI

by Ken Nail

Keep the party hopping on your favorite bay, lake, or river with Sony's CDX-M60UI marine CD receiver. Sony's "1-wire" USB input makes it easy to connect and control your iPod® or other USB devices, and it plays both store-bought and recordable CDs, including discs loaded with MP3, WMA, and AAC files. You can add optional satellite radio or HD Radio® tuners, and you'll also find a handy front-panel auxiliary input for your MP3 player or any other outboard sound source.

Whatever you listen to, the built-in amplifier will carry the music over the noise of wind and waves, while the 3-band equalizer tailors the output for the perfect blend of lows, mids, and highs. Add some extra kick by connecting amps or a powered subwoofer to the three sets of preamp outputs.

The CDX-M60UI's fold-down face, coated circuit board, and UV-resistant paint stand up to sun, salt, and spray, so you'll enjoy years of trouble-free fun. Use the included wireless remote to control the receiver, or connect an optional wired remote so you can run the show from the cockpit while the receiver stays safe below deck.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Hands-on Research" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

      Marine Rated

Marine Ready: The Sony CDX-M60UI Marine AM/FM CD receiver features a conformal coated circuit board and a plastic cover over the top of the chassis to protect against humidity. The front panel and trim ring also contain a UV-resistant paint (tested under ASTM G154).

      Display Features

Dual Illumination: You can switch the CD receiver's button illumination to Red or Blue. The player's display illumination remains white (background) and black (characters).

Contrast: This feature adjusts the contrast level of the head unit's display in 7 steps.

Dimmer: The CDX-M60UI feature a dimmer mode to dim the brightness of the display. You can choose from either "Dim On", Dim Off" or "Dim Auto". The Automatic Dimmer feature automatically dims the display when you turn your lights on. The Orange/White illumination wire needs to be connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit in order for the automatic dimmer feature to operate properly.

Auto Off: When installing in a vehicle without an accessory power wire at the radio location, you can set the unit to turn off automatically after a set amount of time. The Auto Off feature can be set to 30 seconds, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, or No.

      Audio Section

Amplifier Section: The head unit's amplifier is CEA-2006 compliant and rated at 17 watts RMS x 4 channels at 4 Ohms and 1% THD. Peak power is rated at 52 watts per channel.

Digital Music Plus: The Sony CDX-M60UI features Digital Music Plus which is an enhancer technology used to reproduce detail and high frequency sound from compressed audio.

Dynamic Soundstage Organizer2 (DSO2): Sony's Dynamic Soundstage Organizer2 uses proprietary circuitry to induce subtle phase shifts, simulating a sound source that is placed higher than the actual speakers in the vehicle. For example, when the DSO function is used in a vehicle equipped with speakers mounted low in the front doors, it creates virtual speakers in the dash to raise the soundstage. This unit offers three levels of DSO, each with a larger and higher soundstage. You can store the DSO setting for each source.

EQ3 Stage 2: You may select one of the following EQ presets: Xplod, Vocal, Edge, Cruise, Space, Gravity, Custom or Off (flat). For the Custom mode, you can adjust the following bands:

      • Low: +10 dB to -10 dB at 60 Hz
      • Middle: +10 dB to -10 dB at 1 kHz
      • High: +10 dB to -10 dB at 10 kHz

Loudness: This feature allows you to listen to your music clearly at low volume levels by reinforcing the bass and treble. The bass level is increased to +4 dB at 100 Hz while the treble level is increased to +2 dB a 10 kHz.

Preamp Outputs: The CDX-M60UI contains three pairs of RCA preamp outputs - a front pair, a rear pair, and a non-fading pair on a 10" pigtail for subwoofer operation. The subwoofer output has a low pass filter with a selectable cut-off frequency of 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, 140Hz, 160Hz, or Off. You can adjust the subwoofer preamp output's volume level independently from the head unit's volume control from -10 to +10 in 1dB increments.

The volume level of the auxiliary input is adjustable from -8 to +18 dB to compensate for any difference between the unit and your portable device. The aux input can be deactivated in the menu so it doesn't appear as an available source. The head unit comes supplied with a rubber cap that can be placed inside the minijack when it is not in use to keep it dry.

Optional Auxiliary Input: You can connect an additional auxiliary audio device (such as a portable digital memory player, cassette, MiniDisc, or VCR) when used with the optional XA-300 UniLink Auxiliary Input Adapter (158XA300, sold separately). Wired Remote Compatibility: In addition to the supplied wireless remote, the receiver can be controlled by an optional Sony wired marine rotary commander. The optional marine remote is water resistant, so it is ideal for use on boats, where a head unit needs to be kept dry, but you need to control it from a damp remote location. The marine remote features a display which shows source and mode information, satellite radio information, and CD text information.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Coibalt 226 install

Written By Cobaltdan, Lake George, NY on Sunday, October 14, 2012

Installed in a glove box under a windshield and the boat was kept covered. Small amount of condensation is the only moisture possible and the deck failed in 4 months. Do not buy for marine use! Before failure I would have given 3-4 stars USB functions were difficult to use but otherwise sounded good.
      Pros:
      good sound
      Cons:
      poor reliability and functionality

      '05 Road Glide Install

Written By Flhmike, Vacaville, CA on Thursday, June 07, 2012
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this unit to replace my failing stock unit. A Hawg Wired install kit made it easy to install. It is nice to have so many source choices, utilizing the USB is my favorite. The display angle in the bike is not the greatest. The buttons are so small, that gloves have to come off to operate. The CD skips when I hit a small bump in the road which is annoying. One would think that because it is a Marine Grade unit, some sort of memory delay to avoid skipping would eliminate this issue. If it weren't for that and the fact that the tuner has the worst reception I have ever encountered, (even worse when you switch to local), it pulls in about 3 stations. Not even close to the old unit in that respect, so I only give it 4 stars.
      Pros:
Ease of installation, decent sound quality, detachable face plate, front aux input, USB cable.
      Cons:
Tuner reception, CD skips with small road bumps, really small buttons.

      Dont get wet

Written By DaveJ, West Texas on Thursday, November 24, 2011

I have been thru 2 of these units, thinking the first one was just a fluke, they both quit working when the face got damp. I even purchased the marine covers for them and the covers didnt help. Covers would open under any kind of chop in the water. Got so they wouldnt even close. Definatly not marine grade.
      Pros:
      Worked for 2 months.
      Cons:
Is in no way water resistant. The removable face gets damp and everything stops working.

      Not good at all!!!

Written By Melissa, IL on Friday, August 19, 2011

I had this brand new in a boat and it worked for about two months. At that point you had to take the face off and reset everytime you wanted to turn it on and none of the buttons worked anymore. It was kept covered in the boat all the time and the cover on the boat. Does not handle sun and spray whatsoever!!! VERY DISAPPOINTED.

      Not water resistant at all

Written By Nccohiba, Raleigh, NC on Thursday, August 04, 2011

Put the radio in last year and it sounded great! IPOD controls on faceplate would not shuffle just the playlist. 1 year and 7 days after the 1 year warranty it rained for about 10 seconds and that was it. A week later it would work part time, but only with the remote. Then a day after that it was done! The only thing you hear are the beeps when you turn the ignition off.

Bought for my Harley Electra Glide

I am very pleased with this CD Player. I bought the marine grade because I put this unit in my Harley Davidson Electra Glide. The CD Player sounds great and I can have all the music from my Iphone 4 or ipod right there on my motorcycle when I go on long trips. This unit looks so good in my stock fairing and should stand up to years of abuse! The installation was made easy using a Hawg Wired kit that is custom made for use with Sony units. The hand controls for volume and track selection even work! This is a very good purchase that will be getting a lot of use.

I worked with several on line technical chat people before deciding which stereo to purchase. I opted for this Sony as I hoped it would be the easiest to exchange with my existing Sony stereo. All advisors were exceptionally patient and knowledgeable. I was able to remove and replace the existing stereo myself. My main objective was to obtain a direct connect to my Ipod versus using a FM transmitter - works like a charm! Love the ablility to control the Ipod directly from the stereo face plate. It even turns the volume down if you get a text or phone call ... Very happy with my purchase ... and thrilled that i was able to install it without using the free tech support.

Installed unit in cabin of our sailboat. Replaced existing radio, easy to follow install directions. Decent sound, given speaker limitations. Easy to control. I like the fact I can stick the Ipod away in a locker and control it from the radio. Remote control allows operation from cockpit.

      Great Radio

Written By Clay, Memphis, TN on Tuesday, April 12, 2011

Great little basic radio, works excellent, easy to install, and it charges your iPod
      while you play.

It is a little hard to navigate but workable and be sure to buy a usb cord if you want
to play a iPod or any other MP3 player because it is not included.

I bought this thinking I could plug in XM to the BUS IN. Nope, the BUS IN may be
for CD changers or something. To plug anything else into the BUS IN and have it
work, you need to buy an adapter for $100.

I put this in my 07 Harley Street Glide The sound it puts out is AMAZING with
the stock Harley speakers but now I need to put bigger and better speakers in
it.. LOL Also thinking about getting one for my 01 Maxima.. Crutchfield is the best.

I ordered this Sony because it had six RCA outputs (3 sets of 2). I have it hooked to an amp and four speakers in the boat and two on the tower and a subwoofer.
      Great Unit

I replaced the stock Clarion on my SeaRay 180 Sport. The Sony receiver just blows away the Clarion. The controls and settings of the receiver are very easy to learn and use. I also added two 6 1/2 Alpine speakers in the bow and the sound is just AMAZING, so a total of four 6 1/2 speakers in the boat now. The USB connection is a nice touch for the use of your iPod ; however, you will have to cut a bigger hole in your boat to fish the USB through. It can not be detached. That's okay because I used a grommet to protect the wire from rubbing against the fiberglass. The face can be easily read in the sun and you can change the backlight to either blue or red. If you are not running an amp (like me), the LOUD setting must be turn on. It makes a world of difference. The remote is nice, but you will have to aim it directly on the radio. I am very please with the Sony receiver.

Easy to install and sounds great. Very user friendly controls that allow for proper tuning for mutiple speakers. Added remote is a bonus. You get what you pay for in this unit. I highly recommend this unit.

      So far so good

Written By 67crusty, Marquette, MI on Friday, March 27, 2009

It really hasn't been boating weather in these parts yet. I did get a couple nice days to install this radio in the boat. The original(I believe it was made by Dual) succumbed to corrosion in the face plate. It still worked, but no display. I left the spray cover I had in place and the install was as straight forward as could be. Sound seems quite good and the IPod controls are great. Seems to be a nice bright display. Controls may take some getting used to, but that's to be expected when you have so many features. Can only look forward to enjoying it on the water.
