Why should I put a marine receiver on my boat?

Few things are better than relaxing to your favorite music out on the water. Sure, you can put a car stereo in your boat, but a marine receiver is designed to stand up to the damage that humidity, moisture, and salt can cause, so it'll have a much longer life span in your vessel. And today's marine receiver offers all the features you want when you're cruising, including iPod controls, satellite radio capability, and connections for the outboard amps in your system.

Our take on the Clarion M309 Marine Receiver

by Ken Nail

The Clarion M309 doesn't go halfway. This marine receiver is built to stand up to the tough environment you encounter on a boat, with a drip-shield chassis and a conformal-coated circuit board for protection from moisture and marine conditions. Not only will it last a long time, you'll cruise the waterways enjoying great sound and all the latest media options.

Hook up your gear
If you've got your music on more than CDs, you're well served by the M309. The rear and front-panel auxiliary inputs give you two options for plugging in portable players. A rear USB input gives you a place to connect thumb drives or your iPod®. Add an optional satellite radio tuner for an unparalleled variety of music, news, sports, and talk.

For a heavy-hitting system, add amps to the three sets of preamp outputs and bring on all the sound you need, even on the largest boat.

Don't leave your discs on the dock. The receiver plays all your store-bought or home-burned CDs, including discs loaded with MP3, WMA, and AAC files. Whatever your source, you'll be able read all the info it provides, thanks to a 13x10 character, 2-line black-on-white display.

Remote control
You'll find a wireless remote control in the box, or add on Clarion's MW1 and MW2 wired remote controls — place one at the helm and you'll still be able to control the receiver that you've installed below. Or pick up Clarion's MF1 and enjoy radio frequency remote control of the recevier wherever you are on the boat.

Sound matters
The rich media features of the M309 are complemented by the outstanding sound quality. The powerful amp outputs 21 watts to each of the four channels, and you can adjust your tone with separate bass and treble adjustments. BBE® MP sound processing adds life to compressed music files, and even makes your regular CDs sound better.

      Marine Rated

Marine Tested: The Clarion M309 Marine CD receiver has been engineered and tested for use in the harsh marine environment. The M309 meets ASTM B117 and ASTM D4329 guidelines ensuring the receiver's resistant to salt, fog and UV exposure. The receiver features a drip shield chassis to keep water from dripping onto the unit's internal circuits. In addition, the head unit's PCB and microprocessor are conformal coated to protect them from corrosion.

      Display Features

Ergonomic Face Design: The Clarion M309 features an easy-to-use rotary volume control and easy-to-read illuminated buttons on the face which are laid out in an asymmetrical design to place the most used features within a specific area for ease of use and less user distraction. The front panel 3.5mm auxiliary input on the M309 makes it easy to connect an external audio device

Digital LCD Display: The dual-line digital LCD display, with bluish-white background and black characters, on the M309 allows numbers and characters to be displayed clearly in all lighting conditions.

Contrast: You can set the contrast level between 1 and 10 for best display visibility.

Illumination Dimmer: The receiver's display automatically dims to a preset brightness when the vehicle's headlights are turned on. The wiring harness includes an orange/white lead that should be connected to the vehicle's parking light circuit in order for the dimmer feature to operate.

Detachable Face Security: This unit features Detachable Face Security. A face-case is included to protect the unit's faceplate when detached.

      Audio Section

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the M309 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the M309 are as follows:

      • CEA2006 Specs: 21 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
      • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 watts total)

3 Set of 2V Preouts: The M309 features front, rear and subwoofer preamp outputs on a set of pigtails attached to the rear chassis. The subwoofer output is non-fading and its output level can be adjusted from -6 to +6. The subwoofer output does not contain a low-pass crossover.

Bass and Treble Adjustment: The Bass (100Hz) can be adjusted from -7 to +7 (+/-14dB), while the Treble (10kHz) can be adjusted from -6 to +6 (+/-12dB).

BBE MP: BBE MP is a sound enhancement and restoration function for compressed audio files. BBE MP improves digitally compressed sound, such a MP3, by restoring and enhancing the harmonics lost through compression. BBE MP works by regenerating harmonics from the source material, effectively recovering warmth, detail and nuance. You can set this function to High, Mid, Low, or Off.

Mute: Use this function to turn off the sound immediately from the remote control.

      Radio Functions

AM/FM Tuner: The Clarion M309 is equipped with a built-in AM/FM tuner offering 18 FM station presets and 6 AM station presets.

Instant Station Recall (ISR): You can store one radio station in Instant Station Recall (ISR) memory and recall it from any mode (except Power Off). Once the ISR station has been recalled, you cannot tune to another station without first disengaging the ISR function. You can, however, switch to another source.

Satellite Radio Ready: There are several options for connecting an optional XM or SIRIUS Satellite Radio receiver to this receiver:

      • SIRIUS Satellite Radio: To receive SIRIUS Satellite Radio, you can connect the optional SC-C1 SiriusConnect Universal Vehicle Tuner (607SCC1) or the SC-VDOC1 SiriusConnect Plug-and-Play Dock (607SCVDOC1), along with a compatible SIRIUS portable tuner (all sold separately), directly to the Clarion CMD6.
      • XM Satellite Radio: To receive XM Satellite Radio, you can connect the optional CNP2000UCA XM Tuner and the CNP-CLA1 Clarion adapter cable (package item number 700XMCLA2).
      • Auxiliary Input: A portable satellite radio receiver can also be connected to the head unit via an auxiliary input.

Note: A subscription is also required to receive satellite radio programming from SIRIUS or XM.

      Disc Playback

MP3/WMA/AAC Playback: The unit can play MP3, WMA, and AAC files recorded onto CD-R and CD-RW discs using ISO9660 Level 1 or 2, Joliet, Romeo, or Apple ISO formats. The player can recognize up to 8 hierarchical levels, 255 files per folder and 510 total files. Bit rates for MP3 and AAC are 8-320 kbps, plus VBR (Variable Bit Rates). Bit rates for WMA are 8-320 kbps. This unit is compatible with, and will display MP3 and WMA ID3 tags up to 64 characters.

Note: Tracks purchased at an iTunes Music store, and copyright-protected files cannot be played.

Disc-In-Play-Function: This feature allows you to turn the power to the unit "on" and start playing the disc automatically when the disc is inserted even if the unit is not powered up, as long as the ignition key is turned to the "on" or "acc" position.

Top Function: The Top Function resets the CD player to the first track of a CD-audio disc. In the case of an MP3/WMA/AAC disc, the first track of a folder being played will be reset.

Scan Play: This function allows you to locate and play the first 10 seconds of all the tracks recorded on a CD or the first 10 seconds of the first track of all the folders on an MP3/WMA disc.

Last Position Memory: If you turn off the unit while a disc is playing, it will resume playback at the stopping point when it is turned on again.

Auto Reload: When a CD is ejected and left sticking out of the CD slot for 15 seconds, the unit automatically reloads the CD to protect if from damage.

Mounting: For proper CD playback you must install the unit within 30-degrees of horizontal. When ISO-DIN mounting, you will need to use your vehicle radio's original factory ISO screws.

      Aux/USB/iPod Connectivity

      Clarion M309

Written By Jeff, Maryville, Tn on Monday, June 04, 2012

Overall I'm very pleased with it. The only drawback is the single line display, otherwise I'd give it 5 stars. 3 lines of RCA outputs is nice, and the USB is awesome.
      Pros:
USB, 3 lines of RCA outputs, price
      Cons:
      Single line display

      It;s just ok

Written By Dave, Missouri on Monday, May 09, 2011

I installed this in my boat mainly cause I like the RF remote and I wanted a radio with a sub out. The radio is ok, I fine the tuner is weak and when trying to stream pandora on my Iphone it locks up unless I use the headphone aux imput. I also do NOT like the lack of sub output control as you have no adjustment other than output level. also when controling the Ipod function it is very very basic not allowing any more than just the bare minium of control. also the RF remote should be the standard remote not optional. In short the radio works but I would NOT buy it again.
