Home THX Cinema Surround: THX
is an exclusive set of standards and technologies established by the
world-renowned film production company, Lucasfilm, Ltd. The intent is to make
the experience of the film's soundtrack, in both movie theaters and in home
theaters, as faithful as possible to what the director intended. Home THX Cinema
Surround incorporates patented technologies to accurately translate the
sound from the movie theater environment into the home, correcting the tonal and
spatial errors that occur. These technologies include:
- Re-Equalization:
The tonal balance of a film soundtrack will be excessively bright and harsh
when played back over audio equipment in the home because film soundtracks
are designed to be played back in large movie theaters using very different
professional equipment. Re-Equalization restores the correct tonal balance
for watching a movie soundtrack in a small home environment.
- Timbre Matching:
The human ear changes our perception of a sound depending on the direction
from which the sound is coming. In a movie theater, there is an array of
surround speakers so that the surround information is all around you. In a
home theater, only two speakers located to the side of your head are used.
The Timbre Matching feature filters the information going to the surround
speakers so that they more closely match the tonal characteristics of the
sound coming from the front speakers. This ensures seamless panning between
the front and surround speakers.
- Adaptive Decorrelation:
In a movie theater, a large number of surround speakers help create an
enveloping surround sound experience, while in a home theater there are
usually only two speakers. This can make the surround speakers sound like
headphones that lack spaciousness. The surround sounds will also collapse
into the closest speaker as you move away from the middle seating position.
Adaptive Decorrelation slightly changes one surround channel's time and
phase relationship with respect to the other surround channel. This expands
the listening position and creates, with only two speakers, the same
spacious surround experience as in a movie theater.

Ultra 2 Certification: The
AVR-4802R satisfies the strict standards of Lucasfilm, Ltd. governing
performance, features, sound quality, power, stability into low-impedance
speaker loads (3.2 ohms and higher), and ease of operation.

Pure Direct Mode:
In addition to surround sound playback, the AVR-4802R lets you enjoy pure
2-channel stereo sound as well through its Pure Direct mode. In Pure Direct
Mode, while listening to digital sources, power to the video circuitry and the
front panel display is turned off, and with analog source inputs, power to the
digital circuitry is also automatically turned off.
Audio Delay: The
Audio Delay function corrects for slight lags between the sound and picture (Lip
Synch) that can occur when a video signal is processed, such as in a Progressive
Scan DVD Player or outboard video processor.
High-Quality Pure Audio
Chassis Construction: Unwanted
vibration is minimized by placing the power transformer near the center of the
unit, the digital circuitry beneath the center, and the power amp circuits on
the left and right sides. By also separating the analog circuit and video
circuit sections, mutual interference among all the circuits is eliminated. This
chassis design is well suited to the faithful reproduction of all types of
sources, from the delicate purity of 2-channel stereo music recordings to the
high-quality multi-channel soundtracks of DVD-Audio and the dynamic realism of
sound and picture signals from DVD-Video programs.
Wide
Range Circuit Topology: Front
end and power amplifier circuitry is designed with flat frequency response
that extends to 100 kHz, perfectly suited for wide-range audio media such as
SACD and DVD-Audio.
24-bit, 96 kHz A/D
Converters: The AVR-4802R uses highly
accurate 24-bit, 96 kHz A/D converters to handle analog to digital conversion.
Since the converted digital signals are at extremely high resolution, the
resulting sound quality is far more faithful to the original source than with
conventional designs.
ALPHA 24
Processing: The
AVR-4802R includes Denon's renowned 24-bit ALPHA processing technology
that reproduces digital signals in a waveform with the smoothness
of analog signals. This technology thoroughly suppresses annoying
quantization distortion and faithfully reproduces the delicate musical
details of low-level signals. ALPHA 24 processing works in 2-channel Stereo,
Direct, Pure Direct modes.
DDSC-Digital
(Dynamic Discrete Surround Circuit): DDSC-Digital
is a circuit configuration specially designed by Denon in which
all the elements of the surround processor are optimized by the use of
selected high performance discrete elements, including separate A/D and
D/A conversion, with sophisticated dual DSP surround decoding.
Dual 32-bit SHARC Processors:
Featuring the latest Analog Devices 32-bit floating point SHARC DSP devices, the
AVR-4802R provides superb resolution and widest dynamic range of Dolby Digital,
DTS and PCM audio signals.
On-Screen
Display (OSD): An
OSD can be displayed on your television for easy system setup. The OSD is sent
through the Monitor 1 S-video and composite video monitor outputs; the OSD is
not sent through the component video output, the Monitor 2 S-video output or the
Monitor 2 composite video monitor output.
Multi-Zone
Output: With the AVR-4802R's Multi Zone
Output and Select functions, you can output different program sources to
multiple zones. Sources can be selected for output to one additional zone besides
the main room (or home theater). This zone, Multiroom Zone 1, can utilize a pair
of variable preamp output jacks for connecting an optional amplifier to drive
the speakers in that zone. Since the outputs are variable, you can control the
volume with the receiver's remote control (separate remote control repeater
system required). The AVR-4802R's
Power Amplifier Assign function also lets you assign the 2 Surround Back amplifier
channels to drive two speakers in Multiroom Zone 1 with 125 watts per
channel, while still providing full 5.1-channel output to the main room.
Dual Surround Speaker Mode:
The AVR-4802R provides the ability to connect two different sets of surround
speakers, and place them in the appropriate locations in your home theater room,
so that you can enjoy both movie soundtracks and music listening, with optimum
results and no compromise.
Personal Memory Plus:
The Personal Memory Plus function automatically memorizes the surround modes and
input modes selected for the different input sources. When an input source is
selected, the modes stored in memory for that source are automatically recalled.
The surround parameters, tone control settings and playback level balance for
the different output channels are memorized for each surround mode.
Bass
Management and Speaker Setup: Various
speaker size settings are available to ensure that small speakers do not receive
full-range signals and to tell the receiver where to send signals. A test tone
can by played through each speaker, allowing you to independently adjust the
level of each channel. In addition, you can set a delay time for each channel,
adjustable from 0-60 feet in 1-foot increments.
CINEMA EQ. (Cinema
Equalizer): The Cinema EQ function
gently decreases the level of the extreme high frequencies, compensating for
overly-bright sounding motion picture soundtracks. Select this function if the
sound from the front speakers is too bright. This function only works in the
Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Digital, DTS Surround and Wide Screen modes.
D.COMP. (Dynamic Range
Compression): Motion picture
soundtracks have tremendous dynamic range (the contrast between very soft and
very loud sounds). For listening late at night, or whenever the maximum sound
level is lower than usual, the Dynamic Range Compression allows you to hear all
of the sounds in the soundtrack (but with reduced dynamic range). This only
works when playing program sources recorded in Dolby Digital or DTS. You can
select one of the four settings: "OFF", "LOW",
"MID" (middle), or "HI" (high).
Dialogue Normalization:
The dialogue normalization function is activated automatically when playing
Dolby Digital program sources. Dialogue normalization is a basic function of
Dolby Digital, which automatically normalizes the dialog level (standard level)
of the signals that are recorded at different levels for different program
sources, such as DVD, DTV and other future formats that will use Dolby Digital.
On-Screen
Display: This unit has
an on-screen display to assist you in the setup and use of the receiver. The OSD
is output from the Composite Monitor 1 and/or the S-Video Monitor 1 outputs,
depending upon the video signals being input to the receiver. They are not
output from the component video outputs, or the Composite Monitor 2 or S-Video
Monitor 2 outputs.
Last Function Memory:
This unit is equipped with a last function memory, which stores the input and
output setting conditions as they were immediately before the power was switched
off.
Back-Up Memory:
The unit is also equipped with a back-up memory. This function provides
approximately one week of memory storage when the main unit's power switch is
off and with the power cord disconnected.
Remote
Control
Multibrand/Learning Remote:
The AVR-4802R comes with the RC-932 Multibrand A/V Wireless remote control. In
addition to being pre-programmed to control many brands of audio/video source
components and TVs, this remote also has learning capability, allowing it to be
customized for any installation. Dimensions: L=9.042", W=2.25", H=1.448".
System Call:
Up to 10 sequential commands can be stored in each of two System Call (Macro)
functions.
Variable
Backlight Time: The
RC-932 remote's backlighting time can be set between 3 and 30 seconds.
Inputs
and Outputs Notes
Assignable
Digital Inputs: You
can assign a component to each of the five optical and three coaxial digital
inputs. The components you can select from include: CD, DVD, VDP, TV, DBS/SAT,
VCR-1, VCR-2, VCR-3, TAPE, or V-AUX.
Optical
Digital Outputs: Optical
Digital Inputs 4 and 5 have corresponding optical digital outputs. These outputs
allow you to send 2-channel digital signals to other components, such as CD or
MiniDisc recorders or DAT decks.
Video Switching: This
unit has 8 video inputs, 3 video outputs (VCR 1, 2 and 3), and two monitor
outputs, all with composite and S-Video jacks. There is no video conversion, so
each video source has to be output the same way as it was input. The unit's
on-screen display is output through the Monitor 1 jacks only.
Component
Video Switching: In
addition to composite and S-Video switching, this unit can switch between three
high-resolution, component video sources. There are 3 component video inputs and
1 component video output, each with gold-plated jacks labeled "Y",
"PB/CB" and "PR/CR". The bandwidth of the component video
inputs/outputs is 50 MHz, capable of passing through wideband (480p, 720p,
1080i) video signals for DTV and Progressive Scan DVD players.
Speaker Terminals: All
of the receiver's speaker terminals are binding posts. They are not 5-way
binding posts because a
plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs and they are positioned
too far apart to be used with dual banana plugs.
Preamp
Outputs: This
receiver offers 7.1-channel preamp outputs, allowing you to connect separate
amplifiers if desired. There is also a stereo preamp output for Multiroom Zone 1.
7.1
Multi-Channel Input: The AVR-4802R
is equipped with a 7.1-channel input to accommodate present and future
multi-channel formats, such as DVD-Audio and SACD.
RS-232C Port: The receiver has
an RS-232C port on the rear panel to accommodate an external remote controller.
Room-to-Room Remote Jacks: The
receiver has a mini-jack input for an external remote controller. The adjacent
room-to-room output is for future use.
Power Amp Output: The receiver
provides a 12-volt DC trigger to turn on/off a compatible external amplifier
used to power speakers in Multiroom Zone 1.
