Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the JVC KD-X80BT

by Zak Billmeier

Awesome display
A Saturday morning cartoon character from my youth used to say that "knowing is half the battle." With JVC's knockout JVC KD-X80BT digital media receiver in your dash, you'll know more than enough. You'll see plenty of song info, caller info, and Pandora® station info on this baby. And JVC gives you complete control over the look — you can choose from over 30,000 different colors for the left and right sides independently, plus control brightness for each side separately.

Built-in Bluetooth® gives you lots of options
You may know that Bluetooth lets you talk hands-free in your car, but this receiver also allows you to receive text messages and stream music, depending on your phone's features. You iPhone® users can control your favorite PANDORA® Internet Radio stations right through the rear USB port, while you Android™ and Blackberry™ users control your stations through the Bluetooth connection — no wires needed.

Android friendly
JVC's Android app lets you use your compatible Android phone's touchscreen to control the action using finger swipes and gestures — for example, make an upside-down "V" to change the source. So pop your Android phone in a mount, and you can reach down and skip a track without taking your eyes off the road.

Keep two phones connected
The KD-X80BT's built-in Bluetooth lets you pair two phones at once — no need to choose between your personal and business phones. When a call comes in, the receiver will blink either blue or red, so you'll know at a glance if your call is coming from home or the office. To answer a call, just tap the volume knob.

Do more with your USB connection
JVC upped the power in their USB port, which lets you keep a smartphone charged while it's performing many battery-draining tasks at once. And with your smartphone connected, you can listen to your phone's internal memory as one source and access the little microSD card as another.

Build a system
If you've got plans to build a complete car audio system, the KD-X80BT is a great place to start. You'll appreciate three sets of high-power, 4.8-volt preamp outputs when it's time to add amps and subs — you can even tweak your bass level right from your dash. You'll also get a rear auxiliary input for hooking up more gear, like a Dock & Play satellite radio.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this JVC stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the JVC, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

This digital media receiver will not play CDs. If you want to play CDs in your vehicle, we offer a wide selection of CD receivers.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

      Digital Media Receiver

Overview: The JVC KD-X80BT is a digital media receiver which supports a variety of audio sources such as the Apple iPod and iPhone, USB memory devices loaded with MP3/WMA music, and almost any portable audio player via the unit's rear-panel aux input. The JVC digital media receiver also offers a built-in AM/FM tuner and supports Pandora Internet Radio (via iPhone, Android, or BlackBerry) so you can listen to your favorite radio stations and online music. In addition, the JVC KD-X80BT supports Bluetooth audio streaming and Bluetooth hands-free communication, with included BT adapter. You can even add Sirius Satellite Radio (optional tuner required) to the JVC KD-X80BT. The KD-X80BT comes with an IR wireless remote control, supports JVC Smart Remote app (for Android), and is factory steering wheel remote control compatible (via optional adapter, sold separately).

Note: The JVC KD-X80BT digital media receiver does not feature a CD mechanism and does not support CD-changer controls.

      Built-in Bluetooth

USB Bluetooth Adapter: The JVC KD-X80BT comes supplied with a USB Bluetooth Adapter (KS-UBT1) which is pre-installed into the head unit's rear-panel USB 1 input, making the KD-X80BT Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR certified. The KD-X80BT supports Bluetooth hands-free communication and wireless audio streaming.

Note: The USB Bluetooth Adapter (KS-UBT1) must remain plugged into the rear-panel USB 1 port, or can also be installed in the head unit's rear-panel USB 2 port.

Bluetooth Technology: Bluetooth is a two-way wireless communication system allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, as well as wirelessly stream audio from your Bluetooth enabled portable music player using the JVC in-dash digital media receiver. Bluetooth wireless technology operates on a 2.4GHZ frequency band within a range of approximately 10 meters (about 33 feet).

Bluetooth Profiles: In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

      • Hands-Free Communication: HFP (Hands Free Profile), OPP (Object Push Profile), PBAB (Phone Book Access Profile).
      • Audio Streaming: A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).

Pairing: Your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone or digital audio player must be paired with KD-X80BT before hands-free & wireless operation. You can register up to five Bluetooth enabled devices with the JVC head unit. You can keep two phones connected at all times (only one can be used during a call).

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the JVC head unit. See JVC's Bluetooth compatibility chart for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled devices.

External Microphone: The JVC KD-X80BT includes an external microphone to carry on your side of your phone conversation and voice command dialing. The external wired microphone offers improved audio quality versus an integrated microphone, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise. You can adjust the level of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 12' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone offers an integrated mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash. The external microphone measures 0.525" (diameter) x 1.485" (depth). This unit does not offer an integrated front-panel microphone.

Bluetooth Hands-Free Communication: The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The controls of the KD-X80BT can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also includes an external microphone (with mounting bracket) featuring adjustable gain, so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers (front or all). During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

      • Answering A Call: When a call comes in, a ring-tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker, the head unit's display will flash (Ring Color), and the caller's name or phone number will be displayed. You can answer the call from the KD-X80BT's front-panel controls, or setup the head unit to automatically answer the incoming call. You can adjust the head unit's ring color from the unit's 29 preset colors or 30,000 custom colors.
      • Dialing A Number: Using the KD-X80BT, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:
        • Entering a Phone Number: Allows you to directly dial a phone number up to 32 digits from the head unit's front-panel rotary dial.
        • Speed Dialing: You can store up to 6 contacts in the memory of this unit for speed dialing.
        • Phone Book: You can dial by using the downloaded phone book. You can download phone book data from your cell phone to the KD-X80BT. If you phonebook contains a lot of contact numbers, you fast search (+/-10, 100, or 1000) through the phonebook by using the unit's control dial. You can also do an A-Z search to scroll the downloaded phonebook. Up to 5,000 numbers can be stored for each registered cell phone. Each number can be up to 32 digits long.
        • Call Log: The Call Log is a list of calls that have originated from and were received by this unit that you can dial. You can select Outgoing, Incoming, or Missed calls (up to 50 each).
        • Voice Dialing: If your mobile phone supports voice recognition, then you can dial out by voice command. Simply speak into the included microphone.

SMS: If your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone is compatible with SMS (Short Message Service), the JVC head unit will notify you when a message has been received. You must then use your phone to check the message. You cannot read, edit, or send a message through this unit.

Wireless Audio Streaming: The JVC KD-X80BT also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. The KD-X80BT will be able to control basic playback functions of your Bluetooth device's stored music; such as Play/Pause, Skip Next/Previous, and Fast Forward/Rewind. The head unit will also display your stored music's song information; such as Song and Album title. The KD-X80BT also supports audio streaming of music apps (such as iHeartRadio, SiriusXM, Last.fm, Rhapsody, & Slacker) , but without control or metadata. You will continue to use your Bluetooth enabled smartphone to view and control streaming music apps.

Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

      USB/Aux Inputs

Dual USB Ports: The JVC KD-X80BT features two rear-panel USB 2.0 type-A ports (attached to a 45" pigtail) for connection of USB mass-storage class devices (such as a USB thumbdrive or digital audio player). The USB ports enable audio playback and control of MP3, WMA, & WAV audio files stored on portable USB mass-storage class devices. Both of the USB terminals can be connected to USB devices at the same time. USB portable audio players that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the digital media receiver's USB port (5V/1A), and the vehicle's ignition switch is set to ACC or On. You cannot connect a USB device via a USB hub or Multi-Card Reader to this unit.

Note: The rear-panel USB 1 port comes with the KS-UBT1 Bluetooth adapter installed. The Bluetooth adapter must remain installed for Bluetooth functionality. It can be removed to allow connection of a second USB (MSC) device.

Drive Change Mode (for BlackBerry and Android): JVC's Drive Change Mode lets you connect your Android or BlackBerry smartphone (that uses an external memory card) directly to the head unit, via USB. Drive Change Mode will let you switch between your Android or BlackBerry smartphone's internal and external memory (such as microSD Card), so you can listen to music stored on either memory. You'll continue to be able control basic playback functions; such as folder/file search, play/pause, and skip next/previous; regardless of memory type.

Playable Files: The JVC KD-X80BT supports the following types of MP3/WMA/WAV files loaded onto a USB mass storage class device. The USB device must be formatted in FAT 12/16/32. The digital media receiver can support up to a total of 20000 files, 2000 folders, and 999 filer per folder.

File Type File Extension Bit Rate Sampling Frequency Tags
      MP3 .mp3 8-320 kbps 16, 22.05, 24, 32, 44.1, 48 kHz ID3 tag (version 1.0/1.1/2.2/2.3/2.4)
WMA .wma 5-320 kbps 8-48 kHz WMA tag
      WAV .wav 705 or 1411 kbps 44.1 kHz N/A

ID3/WMA Tags: The unit also supports ID3 and WMA tags for display of album and artist information. The unit can display up to 128 characters.

Track/Folder List: The Track/Folder List displays a list of MP3/WMA/WAV folders and tracks on a connected USB memory device, so you can easily access your music.

Quick Search: You can search for your MP3, WMA, or WAV music tracks alphabetically (A-Z) or numerically (0-9).

Playback Modes: In addition to Normal playback, you can select from Repeat and Random playback modes.

      • Repeat: Track Repeat (plays the current track repeatedly), Folder Repeat (plays all tracks of the current folder repeatedly), Off (cancels repeat function)
      • Random: Folder Random (plays all tracks of the current folder, then the tracks of the next folder in random), All Random (plays all tracks of the current USD device at random), Off (cancels random function)

USB Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected USB mass storage class device when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position.

Rear-Panel Auxiliary Input: A rear-panel stereo minijack is provided to allow the connection of a portable audio source. Simply connect your portable digital music player to the unit's rear-panel auxiliary input, and you can listen to the audio from the portable player through the speakers in your mobile audio system. The unit's rear-panel auxiliary input can be turned On or Off.

Optional Input Adapter: An optional JVC Line Input Adapter (469JVCRCA or 257KSU58, both sold separately) may be used to provide an additional auxiliary audio input on this unit. This feature allows you to connect a portable audio player, such as a portable MP3 player, to this unit as an additional audio source. The adapter connects to the proprietary J-port on the rear-chassis of the head unit.

      iPod/iPhone Control

iPod/iPhone Direct: The JVC KD-X80BT's rear-panel USB port can acts as an iPod/iPhone high-speed direct connection when used with the dock-to-USB or Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your iPod/iPhone. Using either cable allows audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of select iPod/iPhone models from the JVC in-dash head unit.

iPod DAC Bypass: The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's stored music to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 80dB. The JVC head unit supports audio playback of music, podcasts, audiobooks, and music apps stored on your iPod or iPhone.

iPod/iPhone Control: You can choose to operate your iPod/iPhone through the JVC head unit's front-panel controls, from its clickwheel/touchscreen, or via a streamed app from your iPhone.

      • Head Unit: From the head unit's front-panel controls you can search for music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Podcast, Genre, Composer, and Audiobooks. Once a Playlist or Category is selected, you can search for your iPod's music alphabetically (A-Z) or numerically (0-9). The KD-X80BT also supports Repeat (file/all) and Random (album/all) playback functions of your iPod/iPhone.
      • iPod: You can choose to navigate your iPod or iPhone's stored music from its clickwheel or touchscreen, like you are accustomed to during normal usage.
      • External (App Mode): External Mode lets you enjoy audio content from your downloaded music Apps (such as iHeartRadio, SiriusXM, Last.fm, Rhapsody, & Slacker) and driver assistant Apps (such as Trapster) streamed to your Apple iPhone, through the JVC KD-X80BT. You will continue to use your iPhone's touchscreen to navigate and view your apps; the head unit will only display the clock and "EXT Mode".

Note: Access to your iPhone's downloaded application will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.

iPod Display: The KD-X80BT will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information, when in Head Unit and iPod mode (not in External mode), or listening to Pandora Internet Radio. The head unit can display Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album label.

iPod Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. This unit does not charge the iPad.  If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.

In addition, you can also give songs a thumbs up/down and bookmark songs/artists.

Note: Access to the Pandora service will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone or smartphone to connect to the Internet. Pandora is not supported in Canada and only available in the United States.

Pandora App for iPhone: The JVC KD-X80BT lets you playback and control Pandora Internet Radio streamed to  your connected Apple iPhone, via the USB/iPod connector cable (included with your iPhone). To access Pandora you must have an Apple iPhone (iOS3 or later) with the latest version of the Pandora App from the Apple's iTunes App Store. Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. You will also need a Pandora music service account.

Pandora via Android or BlackBerry: The JVC KD-X80BT also lets you playback and control Pandora Internet Radio streamed from your Android or BlackBerry smartphone, via Bluetooth (no hard-wired connection required). Your Android or BlackBerry smartphone must have the latest version of the Pandora App from the Android Market or the BlackBerry App World. Your Android or BlackBerry smartphone must also be Bluetooth A2DP/AVRCP/SPP certified and will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. In addition, you will need an active Pandora music service account.

      Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The KD-X80BT comes supplied with a wireless remote control (RM-RK52). The remote contains Attenuator, Sound, Source, Tracking, and Volume functions. The remote operates off of a single CR2025 3V Lithium-cell battery (included).

Smart Remote App for Android: JVC's Smart Remote App lets you view the current status and perform simple gesture control of the JVC head unit from your Android smartphone. Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The JVC KD-X80BT utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The KD-X80BT is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the KD-X80BT are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the KD-X80BT are as follows:

      • CEA2006 Specs: 20 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
      • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-X80BT with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

Volume Adjust: The input level of each source (other than FM) is adjustable relative to the FM radio volume, so there isn't a significant volume difference when changing sources. Each source is individually adjustable from -5 to +5.

Pro EQ: The KD-X80BT is equipped with JVC's Pro EQ. The integrated equalizer offers 7 preset sound modes (Flat, Natural, Dynamic, Vocal Boost, Bass Boost, User) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The User mode allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 3-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Level, and Q-Factor).

      Pro EQ
      Frequency Level Q
      Bass 60, 80, 100, 200 Hz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0
      Midrange 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.5 kHz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 0.75, 1.0, 1.25
      Treble 10.0, 12.5, 15.0, 17.5 khz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) Fixed

Source Link EQ: This feature allows you to store Pro EQ bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (Bluetooth, AM/FM, Aux, USB, iPod, and Pandora).

Loud (Loudness): This feature boosts low and high frequencies to produce a well-balanced sound at a low volume level. You can turn this feature on or off.

4.8V/6CH Preamp Output: The KD-X80BT is equipped with three pair of 4.8V preamp outputs (Front/Rear/Subwoofer). The front & rear preamp outputs offer balance/fade control and are designed to hookup to a full-range 4-channel amplifier. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading and designed to hookup to a mono-block subwoofer amplifier.

Subwoofer Controls: The JVC KD-X80BT offers the following subwoofer controls, when you have the unit's subwoofer preamp output activated.

      • Low Pass Crossover: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Crossover for subwoofer preamp output. You can select from 55 Hz, 85 Hz, 120 Hz, or off.
      • Subwoofer Level: Once the Subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level (0-8) from the digital media receiver.

High-Pass Crossover: When activate the subwoofer preamp output's low pass crossover, you can also activate a high-pass filter (fixed at low-pass filter frequency) for the unit's front & rear channels (speaker- or preamp-level), so low frequency signals are cut off from your system's front & rear speakers.

Key-Touch Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

      Display Features

Detachable Fold-Down Display: The JVC KD-X80BT features a manual fold-down face-plate with a 3-line alphanumeric-text display. The JVC KD-X80BT's face-plate is detachable to deter theft. A hard-plastic face-case is provided. Two face-fixing clips are supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can also be purchased for this unit.

Variable Color LCD & Key Illumination: The JVC KD-X80BT features 29 color presets for the LCD and button illumination. You can choose one of these color presets or select the ColorFlow mode which scrolls through all 29 color presets. Additionally, there is a User preset, allowing you to individually adjust the intensity of Red, Green, and Blue from 0 to 31; resulting in approximately 30,000 custom color options. The chosen color preset or custom color can be applied to the display panel and the backlighting for all the buttons except the eject button (it remains red). You can choose to use the same color for the LCD display and button illumination, or use a separate color for each one. You can also select a different color for daytime and nighttime in regards to the unit's LCD and button illumination.

LCD Type: You can select between a Negative or Positive pattern for the display. You can also set the unit to automatically switch to a Positive LCD pattern during the day and a negative LCD pattern during the night.

Brightness/Contrast: The unit offers an adjustable display and button illumination brightness level (0-31) for day and nighttime driving. You can also adjust the display contrast (0-8) to make the display clearer and more legible.

Display/Button Illumination Dimmer: The display/button illumination dimmer can be set to Off (normal brightness at all times), On (display/button illumination is always dimmed), or Auto (display dims when 12-volts is applied to the orange/white illumination lead).

      JVC KD-X80BT

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very nice head unit, able to retain my Sirius subscription. Price is a little high considering unit doesn't have a CD player (not that I need one). Also the Bluetooth should be built in considering the price, not an add on to one of the USB inputs. Which brings me to another point, be aware that there are not really two USB inputs due to this last point. Speaking of the BT, it connects easily and works well, good sound quality when using it. Sirius works well, sounds good, signal doesn't drop as much as my 10 yr. old Kenwood unit. I have only used these two sources, both work well and sound good. Display is easy enough to see, but would like to able to customize it, instead of having just 3 set options. Again especially at this price point. The scroll option (holding the display button in) is a joke. It seems to work sporadically. The display should just scroll automatically whenever song title or artist info. is too long. The menu takes a little getting use to, once you do, it is easy enough to use. Initially I was not thrilled with the absence of preset buttons, but again once I got used to using the presets within the menu, I find them pretty easy to use.

All in all I am very satisfied with this unit.

Crutchfield team knew what to provide me for my installation in my 2004 Chrysler Crossfire. The local stereo installers had no clue. So I bought from Crutchfield and the install was simple and worked to perfection. My sound is way better than the factory head and I now have Bluetooth streaming and hands free calling from our iPhones.
      Pros:
Easy install using Crutchfield team instructions.
      Cons:
      None.

      First jvc - happy!

Replaced stock radio in my Tacoma mainly for the ability to connect ipod/flash drive to listen to music. Routed the mic for the bluetooth through the roof headliner and mounted next to the map lights - everyone says I sound great. Connecting to my Iphone was simple and took about 30 seconds. Now, every time the radio is powered, it automatically connects to my phone. I even changed the color display to turn green when incoming calls are received. Have not figured out how to display incoming text messages yet but really have not investigated that much yet. Having two rear USB's and the AUX allowed me to run the wires into my glove box and keep the unsightly wires hidden. Connected 8g flash drive with folders and the unit easily scrolls through like you were opening on a PC/MAC. Ipod controlls were very similar and did not take long to figure out how to navigate through songs and playlists. The bluetooth from my Iphone works well and the music comes through very clear. Wish there was a way to skip ahead or backwords from the head unit to control the phones music lists. Maybe there is....learned the basics first, will fine tune when more time allows. I have always bought Kenwood/Pioneer in the past but after two weeks, I am very happy with my purchase.
      Pros:
When bluetooth is connected to your phone, displays the battery and signal strength so you can keep the phone in pocket and still see the basics.
      Cons:
The source button is small and right above (almost behind) the volume/control knob. Would be much better located elsewhere on the unit.

In the past, I've always had Alpine and Sony ES receivers. I was looking for a good digital media receiver for my TJ Rubicon. I mulled over the Alpine iDA-x305, another Alpine, another JVC, a Sony and a Kenwood. I eventually settled on this JVC. I wanted a rear USB output, RDS info for the AM/FM tuner, and excellent iPOD controls. With the JVC, I received all of this and more. I do wish that there were a few more buttons, especially for direct selection of radio presets.
      Pros:
iPOD controls, color controls, RDS, readable display in sunlight
      Cons:
      no direct selection preset buttons

      $200 paperweight

Written By Adam C, Goshen, NY on Friday, April 19, 2013

I have been a Crutchfield customer since 1999 and have spent tens of thousands of dollars with them. I have been 100% satisfied with every purchase...until now. I bought this unit 7 months ago because the Crutchfield sales rep I spoke to said JVC units are highly compatible and functional with Droids. After probably a dozen calls to tech support, here are my issues:

      1) The sub preamp outputs flat out don't work. I get no base response with Pandora streaming and slight sub movement on FM stations with the sub amp pegged out.

      2) It is hardly compatible with my Droid Razr Maxx HD. Pandora will usually stream but I get no artist, song or album info...just an error that flashes "STOP" or "PAUSE" over-top of whatever is on the display...including the clock, making it unreadable. Skipping tracks on Pandora does work, but the thumbs up and down do not. It seems to work well with my girlfriend's iPhone 4, however.

      3) I love the sleek design and large display, but you sacrifice functionality. Just setting an FM preset is so counter-intuitive I've had to refer to the manual basically every time I want to set a station. And without preset buttons you have to remember which station is where in your line-up and arrow up or down to find it...often leading you from preset #1 to preset #32 instead of preset #2. And despite the size of the display, reading text is extremely difficult.

      4) It likes to randomly unpair with my phone...usually in the middle of playing Pandora

      Pros:
      5) The Bluetooth is spotty and I often have issues making and receiving calls and have complaints of echos from whoever I'm talking to. 6) Playing music off my iPod of an iPhone through the Aux-in sounds horrendous...basically static! Crutchfield said I could call JVC and get a new unit because of the known preamp issues. Not true. JVC customer support told me that the warranty only covers repairs so I have to drive over an hour to my closest JVC preferred service center.
      Cons:
I called the repair center JVC referred me to and they told me that they haven't serviced JVC units in over 20 years. This service center is even listed on the JVC website! On top of that, the rep from JVC copped a serious attitude with me for no apparent reason. I was much more courteous on the phone than I am being in this review because I know you catch more flies with honey but I am fed up! JVC is garbage. Save your money.

I like it. Overall a great unit, pretty easy to navigate. I wish it would load USB mass storage faster, but I do have over 15,000 songs for it to read. It would also be great if it allowed you to create and store playlists from USB Mass Storage.
      Pros:
      Looks, functionality, sound quality
      Cons:
Load time on USB mass storage, no playlist capability

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm on my 2nd unit after the first one decided to give up. The first one lasted about 2 and a half months then became completely unresponsive and wouldn't turn on. I called Crutchfield and had a new one in 2 days. This is why you buy expensive electronics gear from a retailer that cares about it's customers! I was even over the 60 day return policy and had a smooth transition with the new unit and customer support.

The unit itself - Very nice looking and customizable. The radio presets are a little confusing but reception is acceptable. The unit feels good, although the buttons feel a little cheap. Call quality is great with the bluetooth and syncs within a few seconds after turning on. Overall it's a great unit for the price, looks very nice and operates the way it should (if it turns on) Can't give it 5 stars because of the death of the first unit. Hopefully this isn't a continuous problem with these headunits. also can;t beat buying from crutchfield...if I had bought this somewhere else I would have had to go through JVC warranty and could have taken weeks to get fixed/replaced.
      Pros:
Looks good Sound quality is great
      Cons:
      Prone to premature death

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A very nice unit that does everything I could have asked for. I haven't done any aftermarket audio in decades and it is truly amazing what you get for your money these days. The sound quality is great, install went well. Looks amazing in the dash of my 2002 F150. Only two minor "complaints". First is the user interface. The issue here is probably not unique to this unit, but I suspect all these modern receivers pack a ton of features into only a few buttons and knobs. It is never really obvious which controls do what. I'm learning, but you will spend a lot of time getting comfortable with this thing. I wish it were a little more intuitive. The second issue I have found is that at least in my vehicle putting the microphone in the suggested spot on the steering column is producing marginal audio quality on the other end of the call. I haven't relocated it yet, but I'm planning on moving it up to somewhere near the sun visor to get it closer to my mouth. Fortunately the cable on the supplied microphone is long enough to do this. Will comment back on my results.
      Pros:
Value for the $, Bluetooth functionality. Ease of install, Sound Quality. AM and FM reception are VERY good.
      Cons:
User interface is a bit convoluted.

      Good in concept, horrible execution

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I normally do not go out of my way to write bad reviews but I am doing it for this unit. I purchased this because I use my phone for pretty much everything including playing music. I have the top android phone on the market as I write this and this unit has a hard time staying connected to it. The JVC unit will do things on its own such as decide you want to give it a voice command when you have no such in intention. Probably the most annoying thing though is having to reestablish the Bluetooth connection of the phone to the receiver CONSTANTLY. If you turn your vehicle off you must go into the phone, turn of the Bluetooth and turn it back on, then choose the JVC unit again and wait for it to connect. One of the reasons I bought this is so that it would be easier to use than an AUX input for music. (Thought it would be easier to keep your eyes on the road.) As it is, it is much harder and more involved. For some reason the clarity it plays the voice from the phone changes from muddled to clear and I have not been able to figure out why yet. If you step exactly on the line and make no mistakes you can use this receiver with your phone marginally well. There are few choices in the category and this is why I am keeping it along with the fact you can do hands free calling. All in all though and unimpressive device. NOTE to manufactures. Android is the more prominent OS not the iPhone. Build quality devices for Android or lose customers.
      Pros:
Excellent sound quality. Fairly easy to understand information displayed on the screen when the Bluetooth connection is actually working. Fairly easy to navigate through the menu system. NOTE: Crutchfield has always been an EXCELLENT company to buy from. Not of this units lacking qualities has anything to do with the excellent service they provide.
      Cons:
Bluetooth connection is constantly needing to be reestablished Unit decides you want to give it voice commands when you dont. Have to hope it will figure out you dont so you can use the receiver as you intended. Purchased this for a more hands-free experience and instead ended up more of one. Not sure why the device was created with a removable face but as it is, the attachment of the face to the unit is created in cheap plastic. Can see it breaking easily if used a great deal.

      Unit Good; Crutchfield ok

Written By Rub-a-Dub, Norfolk, VA on Saturday, January 12, 2013

Car:1996 Porsche 911; purchase: Dec 2012. After purchasing my 16year old 911 in Oct, I knew I had to replace the receiver as the original was dead. In doing some research, I ended up settling on this JVC unit based on features (Bluetooth, USB, Aux, Phone, remote), name, and price point. So, as a Christmas gift, this is what I pointed my wife towards and specifically asked to purchase from Crutchfield to ensure I'd have a smooth install. Upon trying to install the unit, the first hurdle I ran into was that I had no diagram or keys to remove the old unit. One of the reason I directed my wife to purchase from Crutchfield was that I expected to have all tools and diagrams...not so much. I ended up researching how to remove the unit and purchased the removals keys from Amazon for $5 or $6. Once removed, it was a matter of matching the JVC's wires to the Crutchfield supplied harness. A quick trip to the local hardware store got me some connectors and helped finalize the install. Long-story-short: I'm still toying with the receiver and learning to use it and it's features. So far, I like what I see; I'll come back after some more time. With regard to the Crutchfield purchase, I expected more for the $189++ - proper install diagram, removal keys, wire connectors (all fairly simple and inexpensive items). Although the supplied wire harness is truly helpful, I could have purchased the unit from elsewhere for about $40 less, then buy wire harness.
      Pros:
Features for the price: 2x USB, bluetooth, Aux inputs; rainbow of color options
      Cons:
None yet for the unit; Crutchfield lack of proper install diagram, removal keys, wire connectors, price.

      Unimpressive

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall the unit felt light and cheap to the touch, I'm used to Alpine, Pioneer and Kenwood, this was my first JVC and it will be my last. Bluetooth connection was simple enough, but that's where the positive remarks end. The audio quality from the Bluetooth was bad, cymbal crashes were distorted and crackled, voices sounded muddy and it would cut out every little bit, even for a few microseconds. Making or receiving a call was impossible as it would simply not play the audio consistently. I could hear the first second or so of the ringing, then maybe a second or two of the call itself and that was it. The only way it would continue with an audio signal was to press the Bluetooth button my phone (Samsung Note 2) when the sound cut out. Not usable. Sound quality was fine, but I really needed the BT to work, it does not, so it's getting sent back.
      Pros:
Crutchfield customer service is exceptional 4.8V preamp outputs, even though I didn't get to test those
      Cons:
BT call quality was horrid, unable to be used BT music quality was pretty bad as well Unit felt very cheap to the touch, such as buttons wiggle when pressed and has a cheap "look" to it. Subjective, yes, but it's my car and I don't want a cheap piece of crap in it

This digital receiver is wonderful! We've been using it with our iPhones and Pandora. Although we could use the bluetooth connection, we have a direct connection in the glovebox. The sound is outstanding. Even AM/FM sound is better than the stock radio that came in our vehicle. De-installation of the stock radio and installation of the receiver as well as Sirius peripherals and various adapters took less than 2 hours. I'm really pleased.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'd been looking for a bluetooth stereo for a while, being a good consumer and researching as much as possible. Up until 2 months ago I had decided on a Pioneer, but when I came back to Crutchfield to order the HU, I decided to do one last search and came across the X50BT which in turn lead me to the X80BT. I'm big on minimal wire exposure in my little car and loved the fact that the X80BT had two rear USB connections for the bluetooth dongle and my iPod. I didn't like the idea of connecting my iPod to the front nor did I like the idea of leaving the bluetooth receiver sticking out of the front (granted the bluetooth receiver is an ultra mini USB dongle), which was the only option with X50BT. I wish for the extra cash the X80BT still had the front USB, but that was not a deal-breaker.

For those interested in performance with Spotify - you won't be disappointed. The 3-line display shows all the information you would expect with the HU control you would expect.

The hands-free calling is acceptable in conjunction with my iPhone 4S. A friend noted I was cutting in and out; however, that may have been his phone or my reception (Sprint, blah). Other calls were noted as clear but noticeably different.

I love that I can "call up" Siri from the HU without fidgeting with my phone.

All-in-all, I am very hapy with the purchase and forsee this unit hanging around even with the purchase of a new vehicle.
      Pros:
Bluetooth, iPod HU control, easy search controls for iPod, clean look, variable color display is a nice touch.
      Cons:
No front USB; phone audio doesn't play over system when BT not selected (GPS voice from phone won't play-over other inputs such as iPod or radio), that may perhaps be common, I wouldn't know with this being my first BT-enabled system.

Very impressed with this little radio, made my 13 year old speakers sound much better. Easy to use, love the ability to fully customize the color display. My only quips are that from time to time the display is not always up to speed with the song playing through my iPod, it may take a song or two to show the correct title, and every now and then the bluetooth calling will pause the music, however the sound does not come through the speakers, only through the phone itself. This doesn't seem to happen if I dial through the head unit, but while driving it is much easier/safer to do so from the phone directly and wait for it to connect.
