Kenwood

What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Our take on the Kenwood KFC-W3011

by Dominic Devito

Kenwood's KFC-W3011 12" subwoofer offers excellent power handling, high efficiency, and stellar bass — all with a classy appearance which sets it apart from the crowd. Get more substance with your style from this Kenwood's high-impact sub.

The KFC-W3011 features a polypropylene cone with a heavy-duty rubber surround that promotes deep excursion. The cone's stainless steel finish creates a remarkably clean look, while adding strength and durability. The massive magnet cover keeps the sub's inner workings safe from the moisture and dust.

A reversible trim ring allows you to top-mount or bottom-mount the sub, and silver-plated push terminals provide a convenient, secure hookup. This sub works in both sealed and ported enclosures, so you can choose tight or boomy bass response.

    Features
    Enclosure Compatibility
    Power Handling Note

    Features

Woofer: The cone is constructed of a stainless steel coated injection-molded polypropylene. The stainless steel coating adds to the polypropylene's strength and heat resistance characteristics resulting in reduced distortion and improved reliability.

Surround Material: The woofer utilizes a high excursion rubber surround for added durability and better bass performance.

Super Linear Spider: The woofer features a Super Linear Spider design. In this design, the Spider roll gradually becomes higher towards the center enabling this area to withstand more stress with less stretching. This design transfers up and down movement outward to reduce stretching the center area of the woofer. Because the spider's outward portion has more surface area to better dissipate stress from the center, this helps to reduce mechanical damage during increased excursion and enables the subwoofer to withstand more power.

Long Stroke Design: The pole piece has been extended to provide a more linear magnetic field for woofer operation. This lowers distortion and provides the woofer with better low frequency response.

Double Stacked Magnet: The stacked magnet assembly is used to create a powerful linear motor with increased excursion capability for superior bass output.

Spring Post Assembly: The woofer features a compression input terminal assembly that will accept up to 8-gauge speaker wire.

Decorative Ring: For an added decorative look the woofer comes supplied with a Plastic decorative ring that mounts over the flange of the woofer. When using the Plastic ring the woofer is first set into place and the ring is set on top the woofer, aligning all eight holes of the woofer with the ring. The supplied mounting screws are then secured into place. The decorative ring increases the mounting height of the woofer to 1.0625".

Reverse Mounting: The Kenwood woofer can be mounted in either direction. The mounting ring that is supplied with the woofer provides and easy and cosmetically finished look regardless of the mounting direction.

    Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box Volume: The sealed box sizes recommended by Kenwood range from 0.8 cu/ft to 1.75 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal size recommended by Kenwood is 1.25 cu/ft.

Vented Box Volume: The vented box sizes recommended by Kenwood range from 1.0 cu/ft to 2.0 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal size recommended by Kenwood is 1.5 cu/ft. One 3" diameter x 7" long port should be used with a 1.5 cu/ft enclosure.

    Power Handling Note

Power Handling: Kenwood has established "Rated", "Maximum" and "Peak" input power ratings for this woofer. The "Rated" input power spec is equivalent to the RMS Power Handling, the "Maximum" input power rating is a continuous power handling specification, and the "Peak" input power rating is equal to the "Peak Power Handling". The power ratings are as follows:

    • "Rated" input power: 400 watts
    • "Maximum" continuous input power: 800 watts
    • "Peak" input power: 1,200 watts

I just bought this sub from a friend and I hooked it up to a Bazooka CSA300.1 amp and it sounds real nice. Bass hits hard and made the trunk rattle. This is the sub for anyone that are looking for the best bang per buck sub

    Kenwood KFC-W3011

Written By Jeffrey, Colorado on Friday, April 17, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this for a deal as it was being discontinued..

I'm not sure why they discontinued it.. (newer model maybe?) Because this speaker hits HARD. I have it in a 1.0 cf ported box. Slim box design to fit in the tiny cargo area behind the rear seat of a Rubicon Jeep Wrangler. Port is about 5"x1"x10"deep. 16 Guage wiring.

I'm using a Rockford Fosgate Punch P300.2 (Birth Certificate says 383 RMS) to push it.

This thing can be heard from a block away. Turn it down at lights because cars around you won't only hear it... They will feel it. Think that it is hard to get good sound in a Jeep with the top off? Think again.... From my experience it kinda tciks ppl off a lot more... because they have no choice but to listen (and feel) whatever song your playing. Be responsible unless you really like torquing other ppl off.

I also have excellent Polk speakers installed in all the other 5 Jeep speakers locations, so mids and highs are crystal clear and loud. Those are all being run off the deck power. Blaupunkt Brisbane SD48.

So if your lucky enough to get your hands on one of these subs and can work it into your setup... I think you'll be pretty impressed. And for the price, I don't think you'll find its equal anywhere.

I bought these after buying a bandpass enclosure that had to Dual bran 12 inch subs in it. I cant say it was the worst but i have done seeing as i got it for 40 dollars. well i decided to get something better so i put 2 of these in the band pass enclosure and it was a night and day difference these hit easily twice as hard with the same exact amp and tuning and then once tuned correctly there was no competition . best money i have ever spent

    WOW!

Just installed this thing, and let me tell you, even with a low budget JL 230W RMS bridged amp pumping this thing hits HARD, harder than my old JL W3 12" i previously had, i changed subs because the JL was giving me trouble due to the speaker had bad wiring inside so it would go in and out a lot... This kenwood hits HARD!... BOOM FOR YOUR BUCK! GET IT if you're lookin for something entry level or something you just wanna have a little bump in your trunk to make your music sound better!

I have 2 of these in a ported box powered by a 1000 watt (peak) kenwood amp

The system is LOUD. It has accurate bass for all types of music, but when I slap the hyphy I get a back massage in the front seat of a 4 door. EVERYTHING rattles, the trunk, tail lights, license plate, and even the bottom of my spare tire well. I'm very happy with them.

    Amazing Subs..!!

I got these subs a couple of weeks ago. They are AMAZING.. I have been a Rockford Fosgate, MTX, And Kicker Man myself for years. I bought these subs for the G/F and heard how good they really are and gave her my 2 Kicker 12" subs.. These subs are the best I've heard yet. Really. I had alot of subs and amps in my life and these are hands down the best overall..!! I have these on a R.F. P450.4 and they are incredible.. They are clear and LOUD..!! I just bought a Kicker 750.1 and I can't even wait to see how much better they can sound.. I will say from my experience that these subs are really worth twice what they are asking for them.. I'm going to buy an extra set just in case I need them down the road..!! -Pres.

I ordered these subs for my daughters Lancer GTS. Direct replacement of a pair of Blaupunkt. The difference in the bass is unreal. I recommend these subs to anyone who wants the most bang for the buck.

    Totally Satisfied

Written By Jon E.C., San Antonio, TX on Monday, November 03, 2008

I bought this sub to replace my perfect 12.1 which i had for about 7 yrs or so...... anyway, i dropped this puppy in the old box and after a couple of days it was ROCKIN my charger. RUnning an amp bridged for about 180w My next purchase is definately a bigger amp. then i'm sure it'll blow my mind. The reason it doesn't get a 5 star rating is because it doesn't hit the real lows.

    Worse choice ever !!!

I won't recommended these subs unless your a novice. I bought mines about 2 months ago and one of them blew after the break end period. They
boomed for awhile, then I noticed one of them started to rattle even with the volume turned down low. After some play time I noticed that I had to turn up the volume more and more to get some bass, which caused a lot of distortion. If your a first timer these might be good enough to fool around with, just remember not to give them too much power. Spend the few extra bucks and get yourself some good quality subs and do a through research/review before your purchase.Just remember, quality over
quantity. If it's too good to be true ... IT PROBABLY IS !!!

A guy I work with purchased these subs, and he recommended them to me. I'm glad he did. I have them in a sealed box in my trunk and the bass response is excellent regardless if I'm listening to rap or the Beach Boys. I highly recommend these subs to anyone--especially for those like me who was looking for the best "Boom for your buck." Believe me, you won't be dissapointed.

    Exceptional Product

Probably the best set of subs ive ever had. Went from 2 rockford fosgate Punch P2 10s to my new kenwood 12s with a 1800 watt amp and 2 fahrad capacitor and the results were phenominal. Ive barely used as much power as they can take and they beat so cleanly and hard its amazing. This is one of the best deals ive seen out there. Dont be a fool and skip this deal! Its top of the line bass package right here.

    Hit for on a bit

Written By TELLY, Okinawa, Japan on Thursday, October 09, 2008

I purchased just one of the Kenwood Subs. The first I've ever taken a chance on anything outside of Fosgate...big mistake. The sub is hooked to a 1000W Sony X-Plod Amp. Nothing special just a nice amp which kicks out 380W RMS. I felt that between the RMS on the Sub (400W) and the amp. It should make for pretty nice trunk rattling. Well, it hit hard for only about an hour...seriously an hour then died on me. I was a bit upset. It did sound good I will say that but longevity is key for me. I had my Fosgate for 14 years and it was still sounding good.
