Overview:
The TVA50 is an automatically switching amplifier
designed to integrate a whole-house audio system with a local source (TV, CD
player, etc-located in the same room as the speakers). The amp has a line-level
input, two pair of speaker level inputs, and two pair of speaker outputs. When
the TVA50 is turned off, the speaker inputs are shorted with the speaker outputs
and the whole-house system operates as if the amp wasn't there. When the TVA50
is turned on, it disconnects the speaker level inputs, amplifies the line-level
signal from the local source, and feeds it to the connected speakers.

Features
Automatic Trigger:
There are two methods of turning the TVA50 on; current sensing and voltage
trigger. If a source unit is plugged into the AC output on the amp, it
recognizes the current drawn when that unit is turned on, and the amp also turns
on automatically. The amp also turns on when an AC or DC voltage (3-30 volts) is
applied to the 3.5mm trigger input.
Trigger Output:
Whenever the amp is on, a 12-volt DC/200mA output (3.5mm) is energized to
trigger an outboard device (TV lift, projection screen, drapes, etc).
Volume Control:
The relative amp volume is adjustable so you can choose a level similar to the
incoming whole-house signal. Once the amp volume is set to match the incoming
signal, day to day volume adjustment is typically made on the source unit.
Current Sensitivity:
Most components draw some nominal current when they're off. The current sensing
circuit is adjustable to account for that idle current.
Protection Circuitry:
The amp has automatic DC voltage, short circuit, and overload protection.
Speaker Wire: The speaker connectors will
accept stranded copper wire up to 14-gauge. Niles recommends 16-gauge for wire
runs under 80 feet and 14-gauge for 80 feet or more. Larger wire will not fit
into the connectors and is not recommended.
Impedance: When using one pair of
speakers, 4Ω, 6Ω, or 8Ω speakers are compatible. Use only 8Ω speakers when
connecting two pair.
Mounting:
The TVA50 can be mounted horizontally (four rubber feet included) or vertically
(four keyhole slots on the back).
