Our take on the Logitech® Harmony® Touch

by Ralph Graves

The Logitech Harmony Touch is a remote for the 21st century. Instead of a sea of buttons, this innovative universal remote has a few simple controls and color touchscreen. With a flick of your finger you can quickly swipe and scroll to navigate to your entertainment choices.

You can initiate a sequence of commands by tapping a single activity icon. Touch the “Watch TV” icon, for example, and the Harmony automatically assesses the status of your HDTV, receiver, cable or satellite box, makes sure they're all turned on with the proper settings, and presto! Your system's ready for TV viewing. The activity icons are great for family members and houseguests who might find your home theater system intimidating to use.

Harmony Logitech Touch remote channel icon

You can have up to 50 channel touchscreen icons, customized in the order you want them.

Customizable channel icons

With the Harmony Touch you can select display icons for up to 50 of your favorite channels. And you can personalize and rearrange them as you want — right on the remote's touchscreen. To watch a channel, just touch the icon. The remote does the rest.

Touch pad numbers

One of the reasons the Touch looks so simple and inviting is that the number buttons are gone. Instead, you access the number pad through the touchscreen. It's still there when you need it for codes and search – but out of sight when you don't.

Smart, ergonomic design

The sculpted design of the Harmony Touch makes it comfortable to hold. And the buttonsare backlit, so they're easy to use in low-light settings. And don't worry about dead batteries – the Touch has built-in rechargeable batteries, and comes with its own charging cradle. Another nice thing about that cradle – it provides a home for your remote, so it's easier to find.

Simple programming via the Internet

You can control up to 15 devices with the Touch. The system works with over 5,000 brands and 225,000 entertainment devices , including lighting controls, game consoles, multi-room systems, and more.  If it has a remote, then you can probably control it with the Touch.

To get started, simply connect the Harmony Touch to your Mac or PC via the provided USB cable. You'll be taken to a website that will help you program your remote by asking some simple questions about your system and how you use it. The website then downloads the commands and command sequences to your Touch, and you're done. And you can revisit the site to update your remote whenever you upgrade your system with new gear.

    Feature

Overview: Harmony Touch is an activity-based Infrared (IR) universal remote control. Using the myharmony.com web-based setup, you can control up to 15 different devices. Using its Smart State technology, the Harmony Touch keeps track of the devices it controls, which allows it to always know which devices are on and off, and what input each device is currently set to. The Harmony Touch Universal Remote brings the flexibility and convenience of touch screen controls to your home entertainment system.

MyHarmony.com Setup: http://myharmony.com is the website where you configure the Harmony Touch. By connecting the Harmony Touch to your Mac or Windows computer and following the instructions at myharmony.com, you can enter your device information, create activities and choose your favorites. With this information, myharmony.com will configure your Harmony Touch to control your entertainment system. Your can return to myharmony.com any time to update your configuration, although many settings can also be maintained directly on Harmony Touch as well. The myharmony.com website has a database of over 225,000 electronic devices from over 5,000 manufacturers. Your computer will need to meet the following system requirements:

    • Windows-based PC:
      • Microsoft Windows 8 (32/64-bit), 7 (32/64-bit), Vista (32-bit) or XP (32-bit)
      • USB type-A port
      • Internet access (Internet Explorer 8+, Chrome 16+, Firefox 11+)
    • Intel-based Mac Computer:
      • Macintosh OS X 10.5 or later
      • USB type-A port
      • Internet access (Firefox 11+, Safari 4+)
Note: The Harmony Touch must be docked in the included docking station and connected to your Windows or Mac computer with the included USB cable to setup the remote through the myharmony.com website.

Learning Function: In addition to the devices which can be entered using the web interface, this remote can also learn most functions of other infrared remotes.

Full-Color Touchscreen: The Harmony Touch's 2.4" full-color touchscreen gives you easy swipe (up/down/left/right) and tap control of the remote's commands and activities. The numeric keypad is now located on the touchscreen.

Ergonomic Design: The sculpted backlit buttons allow you to easily operate the remote in the dark, while its ergonomic design allows the unit to fit comfortably in your hand.

Activities: The Harmony Touch uses Activity Control to give you one-touch control of your entertainment system. You can use one of the touchscreen's Activity buttons to power on your TV, DVD player, A/V receiver, set all your inputs and even activate play without having to program time consuming macros. Once all of your equipment is "on", the buttons on the remote are also automatically configured for the appropriate operation.

Favorites: Favorites are your favorite TV channels. Using the myharmony.com website you can select up to 50 favorite channels to display on the remote. Selecting a favorite channel will start your "Watch TV" activity, if it's not already started, and tune directly to that channel. Using the touchscreen, you can add, remove and reorder your favorite channels right on the remote.

Help: If you have a problem completing an activity function, the help button will guide you through the fix using the interactive multi-color touchscreen display.

System Off: One push of the off button turns off all the equipment in your system.

Lithium-Ion Battery/Recharging Docking Station: The Harmony Touch includes an integrated rechargeable Lithium-ion battery, which provides up to a one-week charge under normal use. The remote comes with a docking station and AC power adapter that keeps the remote fully charged.

    Works as Advertised

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit does the job and eliminated the need for 5 remotes in my family room AV surround sound set up. One of the reasons for migrating to this unit was to make it easer for my family to use the equipemt and reduce the clutter on the coffee table. The unit is relatively easy to set up and the ability to go online and add devices and activities to the unit is a distinct advantage, The instructions are not models of calrity but you can get throught them. When I had questions regarding the set up, the Crutchfield support staff came to the rescue. Overall I am pleased with the results and the product. In fact I purchased a second Harmony Touch for the upstairs system. This set up has equipemnt going back to the mid 80's as well as some recent purchases. Once again the online device database makde the set up relatively easy.
    Pros:
The quality price ratio is acceptable and the overall flexiblity of the unit is excellent. The ability to eliminate numerous remotes is a distinct advantage.
    Cons:
Instructions could be more comprehensive. This is the reason I don't rate a five star product.

Not as good as the original

Written By Charles K, NYC, NY on Monday, April 08, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Anyone hoping to get the same ease or use and fail safe operation of the Harmony One, 900, etc., will be disappointed by the Harmony Touch. The fact that you could simply make even the most complex system an easy task to run for anyone is what made the Harmony remotes so attractive. If a unit didn't turn on and whole system wasn't working properly, the help button could easily fix the issue regardless of was operating it. This became an invaluable feature and stopped virtually all calls to fix a "blank screen" or "no sound" issue.

With the new Harmony Touch, this trouble free concept is thrown out the window simply because of poor programming. The hardware is almost perfect with little complaints, the materials and build quality are top notch and the touch screen does indeed react similar to any modern touch screen phone. The software however is not as customizable as hoped, so the items on the top of the screen are stuck there regardless if you use them or not. Aside from not being able to customize certain aspects, the software allows you to edit buttons right on the remote. The problem is that the edit button is on the touch screen - ALL THE TIME - when you are using the favorites option. This allows anyone to edit the channels for a favorite very (too) easily, rendering the favorites useless if a change was inadvertent. This happened within 3 minutes of a no-experienced user handling the remote which simply should not ever happen.
    Pros:
    Build Quality & Design.
    Cons:
Software is not well thought out. Most buttons are gone, so the software becomes the key player here. Bad software = Bad Product.

    TOUCHY!!!

Written By JB, Redding, CA on Thursday, April 04, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this remote to replace an older Logitech remote the we flat wore out. The new remote was easy to setup and the functions are easy to navigate within a short time to familiarize yourself with the new unit. The only con, which is typically user error, is that it is easy to "run" a thumb or finger over the touch screen and change the mode... again not a defect in the product, I'm sure we'll get over that soon enough.
    Pros:
Easy setup Transfers old setup from previous remote Small and light Back lit buttons
    Cons:
    None

This remote is a great upgrade from my Harmony One. The ability to download my activities to my Harmony Touch was as easy as typing in my pass word and it did all the work for me. It was great to not have to setup my system agian. If you do have set it up to your components take you time and it will work great. There is only one thing I would change and that is the placement of the buttons. They should have put the DVD controls at the bottom and they touch screen at the top. It is akward to put your hand in a position to hit the lower buttons and I use those all the time. Other than that it is great.
    Pros:
    Ease of use and setup.
    Cons:
    Botton position.

    Fantastic Remote!!

Written By Anthony, Greeneville TN on Tuesday, March 05, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off I currently was using the very popular Harmony One remote for the past few years and the time had come for an upgrade to the Harmony or going with a different remote from another company. I had read all the reviews out there on this remote positive and negative. I then purchased this remote from Crutchfield and I can honestly say I dont understand the negative reviews about this remote. Sure it is different than the Harmony One but different in a great way!! The feel and the response from this remote is great!! Everything works real smooth. I know people will not buy this remote because their are no physical channel number buttons but trust me you will grow to enjoy the numbers on the touchscreen. If I had one gripe the only one would be I wish some of the buttons on the top were actually on the bottom. I also like that this remote is smaller than the one and the charging dock takes up much less room. If you are still on the fence about buying this remote buy it!! You will not be disappointed!!
    Pros:
Great update to Harmony One Feels great in hand Easy to program Fast Compact charging cradle
    Cons:
Wish some of the buttons were placed on bottom instead of top

    Finally...

Written By Michael, Ada, OK on Thursday, February 14, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have owned several universal remotes in the past including Harmony remotes. This is my favorite thus far because it only has the buttons on it that actually use...nothing more. It is easy to set up/program online. It is ergonomic fitting nicely in my hand very comfortably. I love that I can put it in the cradle when I'm done with it and never have to change out a battery. The "Favorites" feature is an amazing convenience as well.
    Pros:
Great quality, ergonomic design, intelligent layout, rechargeable, cool touch screen, fairly priced.
    Cons:
    Could not think of one...

The remote is actually pretty simple to use. However the missing number key will take some getting use to. I like the remote so far, no problems or concerns. I fully charged the battery over night and has not needed a charge in over 4 days.
    Pros:
Touchscreen. Placement of the keys and additional key for DVRs.

Need time to get use to.

    Logitech Touch - Good Product

Written By Mike, Auburn, WA on Sunday, January 20, 2013

Setup with TV, satellite radio, Bose Home Theater, Apple TV with multiple activities. It takes some tweaking to get the delays correct. The remote has the ability to correct problems during initiating of an activity along with modifying an activity on the remote. The Logitech website needs to be more interactive in solving delay problems.
    Pros:
Works well with multiple components Easy initial setup
    Cons:
Ergonomic challenges with some of the frequently used buttons. Fine adjustment of delays takes time

    Great remote!

Written By Tomboy, NW OHio on Thursday, January 10, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love this remote! I replaced a Harmony One with the touch. The complaint I had about the One was no ability to store more than nine favorite channels. The touch, allowing up to 50 is outstanding. The only problem I had was installing the software on my system. For some reason the software would not install properly on I.E. (I am running Ver. 9, 64 bit). Called Logitech support and they were extremely helpful. Finally installed Firefox and the software installed perfectly the first time, so if you have trouble getting the software to take on I.E....install a copy of Firefox and see what happens. Prior to doing that, be sure to delete the previous software versions completely from your system if replacing a previous remote. Love the size, and the ability to store 50 favorites. Very easy to use. Well worth the money. Once the software was installed, the set up was flawless and took no time at all. Great remote.
    Pros:
Light weight, 50 favorite channel storage, very easy to set up, extremely simple to use.
    Cons:
If replacing a previous Harmony remote, be sure to remove previous software versions and start fresh, then reinstall the old remotes software (if you're still going to use it). For some reason trying to just replace it does not work as well as deleting and starting over with software installation. Minor problem, however.

    Touch

Written By gm, pittsburgh, pa on Sunday, January 06, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a good remote. Sometimes the activities I set up don't always power on but you can force the remote to send the signals again and that typically will fix things. I use an IR extender with my system as all of my components are hidden. At first I experienced some issues with the remote and the IR. Its was a long issue of trial and error and I worked with Logitech customer support, but in the end I figured some things out and the remote is doing what I need it to do.
    Pros:
Logitech customer support is great if you would need to call them.
    Cons:
The remote is an advanced device so it may take some folks longer to learn things than others. In that case patience is the key.

A really great improvement over the older Logitech Remotes. Much easier to set up and easier to hold. All the touch screen prompts are a little confusing at first but you get it figured out after a little experience. Overall I'm very pleased!

I went from 5 remotes to 1 when I got the Logitech Harmony Touch for my entertainment center. It took a little getting use to, but it is really easy, haven't quite figured out how to advance recordings on the TiVo yet, so I am watching the whole recording until I figure it out. It will take time getting used to, but one remote is enough!
    Pros:
    Easy to use.
    Cons:
Some of my things I used to do with multiple remotes I have to figure out how to use the new Harmony.
