Our take on the Marantz NR1403

by Marshall Chase

Big home theater sound from a compact component

The NR1403 is sized just right to fit comfortably on just about any bookshelf or TV stand. This full-featured model measures only half the height of many surround sound receivers, yet it boasts all the clean power you need to drive five speakers, and enough inputs to connect a full complement of A/V sources. Even though it's rated at an understated 50 watts per channel, the NR1403's high-quality amplification is a great match for most room sizes, speakers and listening preferences.

Convenient switching for your HD components

3D TV Learn more Blu-ray players, video game consoles, and HD satellite, cable and DVR boxes all go well with the NR1403. HDMI switching lets you send all your high-def digital video sources through a single connection to your TV, making hookup a breeze. Marantz takes the extra step of carefully isolating this unit's internal audio and video circuit boards. This ensures ultra-high signal purity for rich, enveloping surround sound with all your movies, music, TV shows, and video games. And cutting edge decoding delivers the master-quality sound that comes with most of today's Blu-ray discs.

Bluetooth® and HD camcorder friendly

Add Marantz's Bluetooth receiver and play music wirelessly from your compatible cell phone or computer from up to 30 feet away. Marantz's own M-DAX™ audio expansion circuitry recognizes the frequencies that get lost in compressed music files and restores them for better sound. And a front-panel HDMI input makes watching your latest home video a simple matter. Even when the receiver is off, the audio and video pass right through the onto your connected HDTV.

Setup simplicity

Marantz uses Audyssey MultEQ® Auto Calibration to take the hassle out of speaker configuration. Just plug in the included microphone and place it in up to six listening positions. The NR1403 uses a series of test tones to balance speaker levels and fine-tune the delay and equalization settings for each speaker. The result is optimized home theater performance for your specific speakers and room. And Audyssey Dynamic Volume monitors the system to cut those surprise bursts of volume from commercials down to size.Plus, this receiver comes with a built-in first-time setup assistant that walks you through the process step by step.

      Audio Features

5-Channel Discrete Amplifier: The Marantz NR1403 is equipped with a power amplifier that reproduces high-fidelity sound in surround mode with equal quality and power for all channels, true to the original sound. The power amplifier circuit adopts a discrete-circuit configuration that achieves high-quality surround sound reproduction. The 5 channel amplifier is rated at 50 watts with 2 channels driven (20-20kHz, 8-ohms, 0.08% THD).

High Current Power Supply: The Marantz NR1403 AV surround receiver employs a high current linear power supply with an EI core power transformer for high-quality sound playback.

Isolated Audio Circuit Board: The carefully-optimized audio signal path rests on a separate circuit board for maximum performance as well as isolation from interferences generated by high speed video processing.

24-bit/192-kHz DACs: The Marantz NR1403 utilizes a 192 kHz/24 bit D/A converter on each of the unit's five channels for exceptional sound quality. The 192kHz sampling and 24-bit word length capabilities of the DACs allows you to play high-resolution recordings and hear the increased clarity, detail and dynamic range of those recordings.  The NR1403 is equipped with various surround modes to reproduce a variety of surround sound effects, according to the content of the source to be played. The receiver features Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Digital, and DTS decoders.

Audyssey Technology: The NR1403 features a full package of Audyssey audio technologies for optimal sound quality. Audyssey Dynamic Volume offers real-time volume adjustment, while Audyssey DynamicEQ improves your system's surround effects during low volume levels. Audyssey MultEQ automatically sets speakers to suit your room's listening environment and the speakers' characteristics.

      • Audyssey MultEQ: Audyssey MultEQ technology helps create an optimal acoustic profile for your home theater. Using the included setup microphone, Audyssey MultEQ measures sound levels and adjusts speaker configuration accordingly, making setup fast and easy. This room acoustic measuring and correction system analyzes (via the included microphone) the audio characteristics of your speaker system and your listening environment at up to 6 measurement points and automatically tailors the sound for top audio fidelity. You can set the Audyssey MultEQ to one of the following modes.
        • Audyssey: Optimizes the crossover point, output level, delay time, and equalization of all speakers based on speaker frequency response, speaker location, and room acoustics.
        • Audyssey Bypass L/R: Optimizes all speakers except front left and right.
        • Audyssey Flat: Optimizes frequency response of all speakers to flat.
        • Manual: Adjusts the tonal quality for each speaker individually using the manual equalizer settings; adjust from -20 to +6 dB at 63 Hz, 125 Hz, 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1 kHz, 2 kHz, 4 kHz, 8 kHz, and 16 kHz.
        • Off: Turns equalizer off.
      • Dynamic EQ: Audio engineers mix music and movie soundtracks at reference levels much louder than typical home listening levels. At lower volumes the human ear perceives sound differently; voices change, bass dissipates, and the surround effect becomes less enveloping. Dynamic EQ adjusts the frequency response curve based on volume to maintain consistent bass output, octave-to-octave balance, and surround impact, resulting in rich sound at any volume. You can set the Dynamic EQ to 0, 5, 10, or 15 dB.
      • Audyssey Dynamic Volume: Audyssey Dynamic Volume solves the problem of large variations in volume level between television programs, commercials, and between the soft and loud passages of movies. Dynamic Volume addresses the issue of commercials that are too loud and movie soundtracks with vast differences between soft and loud passages; the results are more intelligible dialogue, loud passages maintain impact, and soft whispers are heard clearly. When the volume level changes, Dynamic EQ also adjusts the frequency response to maintain sound quality. You can set the Dynamic Volume to Day (low), Evening (middle), Midnight (high), or off.

Digital Signal Processing (DSP): The Marantz NR1403 incorporates advanced 32-bit digital signal processing circuitry (ADSP21487) for powerful and highly accurate surround sound reproduction.

Note: Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the AV receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). Even though the AV receiver will decode 7.1channel surround sound (via HDMI), it will only output 5.1ch surround, because it lacks Surround Back channel speaker outputs.

Surround Parameters: You can adjust the following surround mode parameters:

      • Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust:
        • Panorama: Broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect, especially effective when there is limited output from the surround channels, panorama can be turned on/off in the menu.
        • Dimension: Allows you to move the sound field forward or backward.
        • Center Width: Allows you to adjust the width of the center channel.
      • Center Image: In the Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 7 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).

Stereo Modes: The Marantz NR1403 surround receiver also provides two-channel stereo and multi-channel stereo playback, as well a virtual surround from two stereo speakers.

      • 2CH Stereo: This is the mode for playing in 2-channel stereo; bass and treble can be adjusted and sound is output from the front left and right speakers, along with a connected subwoofer.
      • Multi-Channel Stereo: This mode lets you enjoy stereo sound from all speakers.
      • Virtual Speaker: Enjoy surround effects using only the front speakers or headphones.

Direct Modes: The Marantz NR1403 offers two Direct sound modes which offer high-quality sound by bypassing the receiver's DSP & video circuitry.

      • Source Direct: In this mode the 2ch audio signal is played in its original form, without any surround or tone processing. Multichannel audio signal is played in its original form, without any tone processing.
      • Pure Direct: This mode is for playback in higher sound quality than in Direct mode. The display and analog video circuitry are turned off to minimize the possibility of any noise being added to the signal.

M-DAX: Compressed audio formats such as MP3, WMA (Windows Media Audio) and MPEG-4 AAC reduce the amount of data by eliminating signal components that are hard for the human ear to hear. The M-DAX function generates the signals eliminated upon compression, restoring the sound to conditions near those of the original sound before compression. It also corrects the sense of volume of the bass to obtain richer sound with compressed audio signals.

HT-EQ: The tonal balance of a film soundtrack will be excessively bright and harsh when played back over audio equipment in the home. This is because film soundtracks were designed to be played back in large movie theater environments. Activating the receiver's HT-EQ feature when watching a film made from movie theaters corrects this and restores the correct tonal balance.

Dynamic Range Compression (DRC): Motion picture soundtracks have tremendous dynamic range (the contrast between very soft and very loud sounds). For listening late at night, or whenever the maximum sound level is lower than usual, Compressing the dynamic range allows you to hear all of the sounds in the soundtrack with reduced dynamic range. DRC works when playing program sources recorded in Dolby Digital or DTS.

Level Adjustments:  The NR1403 provides the following level adjustments.

      • Source Level: This function adjusts the playback level of the currently selected input source's audio input. Use this feature if there are differences in the input volume levels between different sources. You can correct the playback level of the audio input from -12 to +12dB.
      • Dialogue Level: You can adjust the output level (+/-12dB) to clarify the dialogue output from the center channel.
      • Subwoofer Level: You can set the receiver's subwoofer output level (+/-12dB) independent from the other speaker levels and system's main volume.

Volume Settings: The NR1403 offers the following volume settings.

      • Volume Scale: You can choose to display an Absolute volume scale (0-98) or Relative volume scale (-79.5 to 18dB).
      • Volume Limit: You can set a maximum volume level of 0dB (80), -10dB (70), or -20dB (60) to limit the receiver's total volume output.
      • Turn-On Volume: You can define the volume setting that is active when the power is turned on (0, 1-98, -79 to +18dB, or Last)
      • Mute Level: You can set the amount of attenuation for the audio muting circuit; -40dB or -20dB below current volume, or full mute (sound turned off entirely).

Tone Control: You can adjust the receiver's Bass and Treble (+/-6db) independently to suit your listening taste or room acoustics.

Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Marantz AV receiver offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.

      • Digital Inputs: There is 1 optical digital input and 1 coaxial digital input on the receiver's rear-panel. The inputs accept digital audio signals from a compact disc, DVD, or other digital source component. You can designate the input for each digital input according to your component.
      • Speaker Terminals: The receiver has binding-post speaker terminals for all speaker channels (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R). The binding posts can accept bare wire, pin-connectors, and single banana plugs. The terminals are spaced too far apart for dual banana plugs. The collar surrounding the binding post terminals prevent the use of spade connectors. You can connect 6-8 ohms speakers.
      • Preamp Outputs: The NR1402 home receiver is fitted with 3 preamp outputs (Front Height L/R, Mono-Sub).
        • Front Height Pre-Out: The AV receiver is equipped with a pair of Front-Height Pre-Outs, so you can connect a secondary amplifier to power a pair Front-Height speakers for 7.1ch surround.
        • Mono-Sub Pre-Out: The AV receiver features a mono-subwoofer preamp output (LFE) to connect a powered subwoofer for a complete 5.1 channel surround sound.
      • Headphone Output: The receiver features a 1/4" stereo headphone jack on its front panel for connecting a pair of optional headphones. The unit's speakers will automatically be turned off when a set of headphones are connected.

AM/FM Tuner: The Marantz AV receiver features a built-in AM/FM tuner with 56 station auto-preset memory tuning. You can also set your presets manually. You can even label these presets. In addition, you can even directly tune in a frequency using the receiver's remote control.

      Video Features

HDMI (v1.4a): With six HDMI v.1.4a inputs (5 rear/1 front), the NR1403 allows you to route multiple high-definition devices--like game consoles and Blu-ray players--to your TV. It also allows you to connect all of your devices to your TV with a single HDMI cable (via its HDMI monitor output), reducing cable clutter. The HDMI inputs are assignable to different input sources. They support HDCP copyright protection and are compatible with 3D signals, ARC, Deep Color, xvYCC technology, Auto LipSync, and HDMI control.

3D Pass-Through: With the advent of 3D media, it is important to own a receiver that recognizes 3D video signals. The NR1403 is able to pass through 3D signals from your Blu-ray player, ensuring that the 3D effect doesn't get lost in translation. It also recognizes signals from 3D television broadcasts. By connecting a 3D-compliant Blu-ray disc player and 3D-compliant TV to the NR1403, you will have a 3D home theater where you can enjoy high-definition sound and video on a level you've never experienced before.

ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.

Deep Color & x.v.Color Support: The NR1403 also supports Deep Color and x.v.Color content, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture.

Auto LipSync: This feature automatically compensates for the timing shift between the audio and video of the receiver. If needed, the audio signal can be manually delayed to match the video signal; adjust from 0-200ms.

HDMI Standby Pass-Through: When enabling the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function, regardless of whether the AV receiver is "On" or in "Standby" both audio/video streams from an HDMI input will be output to your television, via the receiver's HDMI monitor output. You can select between three HDMI through function modes.

      • HDMI Input: Selects the HDMI Input (1-6) for which the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is enabled.
      • Last: The HDMI Standby-Through function is activated on the input source selected at the time of setting the AV receiver to the "Standby" mode.
      • Off: The HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is disabled.

Analog Video Inputs: The receiver features two composite video inputs and one composite video monitor output. You must connect the receiver to your TV via composite video to view incoming video from the receiver's composite inputs.

Note: There are no component video inputs or outputs.

Video Mode: You can select between 3 video processing settings.

      • Auto: Processes video automatically based on the HDMI content information.
      • Game: Always processes video appropriate for gaming content.

      Just what i wanted

Written By Russ, Devils Lake, ND on Wednesday, May 15, 2013
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a 2.1 receiver with a small footprint and several HDMI ports. This one fits what I need perfectly. The sound that this unit produces in my admittedly small room is outstanding for my taste in classical music as well as my taste in dialog-rich movies. This is a quality product at a reasonable price.
      Pros:
Six HDMI ports. Small size. Sound quality. Reasonable price. Adequate power for small space.
      Cons:
      None.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound, reasonable price, speedy delivery and a nice looking unit. I also had an issue resolved almost over night.
      Pros:
Exceptional product at a great price. I think the customer service is outstanding and that's one of the reasons I keep coming back to Crutchfield.
      Cons:
The package arrived missing a part but was quickly resolved.

      Great Product!

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this product to replace a 12 year old Denon AVR 2700. While it has less watts than the Denon, it isn't a problem. I purchased the Marantz NR 1403 after purchasing a Oppo BDP-105 and realizing my old Denon wouldn't process the digital signal. I'm mostly a music person but wanted to integrate my home theater system into my 2 channel system (VAC Avatar) using the HT by-pass built in to the VAC which I did with the Denon. The only thing I drive with the Marantz is the center, rear surrounds and the sub. I had to have something that had a pre-out to drive the front L & R through the VAC. I had a few challenges setting it up but after working with it a while and calling Marantz I was able to set it up. There are several features I like but the main one being I can drive my TV through the Marantz even with it turned off (using as a pass through). Maybe that feature is common but it allows more flexibility. The audio quality, while not up to par with the VAC, does a fantastic job at this price point and has the features I need for my system. It definitely has everything I need and produces a great sound as well. The only reason I give it a 4 instead of a 5 is because of the system I have it in which probably isn't fair however it's hard to give it a 5 given my comparison. It really is a great unit and I couldn't be happier with it. I would definitely recommend the unit!
      Pros:
Functionality, size, number of inputs, flexibility, sound quality, price point, pure direct
      Cons:
Power output (it's not bad just wish it was a little more)

      Excellent Product

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this receiver because of a suggestion by a Crutchfield adviser named Ringo. The very first movie my son and I watched with this receiver he said "it sounds like we are in a movie theater". We have watched 100's of movies with my older Onkyo receiver and he never even once mentioned the sound. After fine tuning the speakers I could not be happier with this product.
      Pros:
*Very high quality sound at lower listening levels *Tons of inputs *High quality video out through HDMI *Price is right
      Cons:
      None so far.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wow! For such a low profile, I am quite impressed with the sound output of this receiver. I don't have a very large room so the lower power output didn't bother me. If you have a large room, it could be an issue. This system replaced a Yamaha receiver with twice the power output, but you would never guess it. The sound quality of this unit is a step above the Yamaha for sure. very please with the unit.. especially for the price!
      Pros:
sound quality, feature packed, and price!!!
      Cons:
      none really.

      A Beauty

Written By HJ, Cheshire, Ct on Tuesday, January 22, 2013
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a slim A/V Receiver for my shelf space and this was the slimmest I could find. I can't imagine a better choice. It's slim, sleek and almost sexy with it's curved face. The TV screen setup display and included omni-directional microphone is genius, and idiot-proof. The sound is at least as good as the Denon or Sony I've owned in the past. Hard to imagine why 50 watts per channel isn't enough for some folks. Maybe if you're a closet DJ and need to fill your neighborhood with thumping dance music, this unit might not suffice. The connectivity is naturally geared toward HDMI so if you have a host of older components to hook up you might have to get creative. I'm no techie or audiophile but I know what sounds good to me, and this does. If I could wish for one more feature it would be an A/B speaker switch. HIghly reccomend this unit.
      Pros:
Easy to set up. Great looks. Great sound. Great physical dimensions.
      Cons:
I would like a second optical audio input and an A/B speaker switch.

Is there a way to watch TV, but listen to a media player

I absolutely love the sound quality and ease of use. I have the same issue though as DaveT, who made a comment above. Is there a way to watch the TV, but have audio from a different source?

      Quality Marantz

Written By Ernie, Denver, CO on Friday, October 12, 2012

50 watts per channel is more than loud enough if you have good cable from Monster, banana plugs for all connections, good speakers as from Infinity, and a powered sub. To the user who put a con is because there is no connection for the iPod, that is a PLUS. Apple products are garbage. Use a "Y" stereo from your headphone output. thats all you need. The sounds ESPECIALLY in DTS HD MASTER AUDIO is awesome!
      Pros:
Excellent sound, quality build for the money and easy setup!
      Cons:
      NONE

      Amazing receiver

Written By Brian, Mountain View, CA on Saturday, October 06, 2012
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver is amazingly good - I am thrilled with it. If you are considering it, look no further. I replaced a 55 watt per channel HK receiver, and the Marantz 50 watt sound quality blows away the HK. This receiver would easily outperform any mainstream 100 watt per channel+ receiver, so don't let the power rating dissuade you. Even my wife (who is far from an audiophile) is blown away by the sound quality. It looks extremely sharp, including a uniquely slim profile. Set-up takes minutes thanks to an easy step-by-step "wizard" - you don't even have to glance at the manual. Breakthrough Audyssey technology equalizes the sound based on the positions where people will actually sit in the room - now that I have seen how well Audyssey works, I would never consider a receiver without it. Remote control is simple, functional, and nicely designed. I could not be happier with this product.
      Pros:
Excellent sound quality/clarity, sharp look, slim profile, easy set-up, Audyssey technology, plentiful HDMI inputs
      Cons:
Supports up to 5 speakers but not 7 speakers (only relevant if you have a 7-speaker setup)

Great Unit Despite Small Size and Modest Price

Written By Anonymous, Harold in New York on Friday, October 05, 2012
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

From my judgement, this small, modestly priced unit has virtually all of the features and performance to be found in much larger, more expensive units. A great improvement over its predecessor while maintaining its size and price. Very easy to set up by navigating its intuitive menues and sound is excellent, at least to my elderly ears. Front panel display is crisp and bright; remote has all the keys needed. So., why pay more for big clunkier units when most people could not rell the difference watching or listening?
      Pros:
      Performance, features, size, price.
      Cons:
A bit too automated. Would like easier ways to modify settings.

My only disappointment is that it appears that I cannot watch a football game via the HDMI cable from the receiver while at the same time listen to a play-by-play via a digital connection from a DVD recorder.
      Pros:
Easy to set up. Compact profile is very nice.
      Cons:
      See above.

I love this receiver. The slim line fits into our small stereo cabinet, and it is very simple and easy to operate. For sound, it thumps. I see no reason to go with the 1603 which has minimal upgrades.
      Pros:
Sound. Ease of use. Size. Clean stylish design.
      Cons:
No iPod connection and the accessory adapter is expensive.
