It'll even announce the phone number that's calling. And if your radio is off when a call comes in, the interface will actually turn it on so you can talk hands-free.

    Features

Overview: The USA Spec BT35-TOY is a Bluetooth Phone & Music Interface for select Toyota, Lexus, and Scion vehicles (with or without JBL factory systems). The BT35-TOY lets you add Bluetooth hands-free communication and wireless music streaming to your compatible vehicle's factory radio. The USA Spec BT35-TOY includes a hide-away module, external microphone, radio harness, and T-harness.

Wireless Audio Streaming: The BT35-TOY supports Bluetooth Profiles A2DP and AVRCP for wireless audio streaming from a Bluetooth enabled device that can also be controlled from the buttons on your vehicle's factory radio or steering wheel. You can stream music stored on your Bluetooth enabled device or stream music apps (such as Pandora, SiriusXM Radio, iHeartRadio, etc.) that are playing on your Bluetooth device to your vehicle's sound system (all speakers will play). You can even skip tracks from your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel controls (other control functions will have to be done from your Bluetooth enabled device). You can control the volume of the music being streamed via your factory radio and steering wheel controls, or the Bluetooth device.

Note: Your Bluetooth enabled device must also support A2DP for audio streaming through your vehicle's sound system and AVRCP to control the Bluetooth device from your vehicle's radio or steering wheel controls.

Hands-Free Communication: The USA Spec BT35-TOY supports Bluetooth Profile HFP for hands-free communication from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, so you can take (answer/end) phone calls through your vehicle's factory radio. Your music will be muted and an audible ringtone will be heard through your vehicle speakers when there is an incoming call. The BT35-TOY will automatically switch to Bluetooth mode when there is an incoming call (even if your factory radio is turned off). The BT35-TOY uses advanced technology to turn your radio on and switch to the correct source to help you never miss a call while driving again. You can even have the BT35-TOY announce the caller's phone number through your sound system; and for most text-capable radios if you miss the announcement, you can view the caller's phone number on your factory radio's display (some text capable radios will only list 8 or 9 digits of the phone number).

Note: You will continue to use your mobile's phone touchscreen or keypad to make calls. The BT35-TOY only allows you to answer/end calls from your factory radio or steering wheel controls. Once you make a call from your mobile phone, you can carry on the conversation hands-free through the included microphone and your vehicle's factory sound system.

External Microphone: The USA Spec BT35-TOY includes an external microphone to carry on your side of the conversation (the caller's voice will be heard through your vehicle's speakers). The external microphone provides better performance in noisy environments than the integrated microphone found in many factory or aftermarket head units. The microphone is fitted with a 10' cable terminated by a 3.5mm connector that connects to the BT-35-TOY module. The microphone features an integrated, self-adhesive mounting bracket to mount the mic to your dash or windshield.

    Note: The microphone measures 0.625" (w) x 0.8125" (h) x 1.25" (d).

Bluetooth Compatibility: USA Spec is currently working out a list of fully compatible devices. The current list of successfully tested devices include the iPod touch (3rd/4th gen), iPhone (3G/3GS/4/4S/5), iPad (1/2/3), Android G2, Galaxy, HTC MyTouch, Desire, and Sony Ericsson W518a (as of 9/26/2012). You will initially need to pair your Bluetooth device with the BT35-TOY, before operation. The BT35-TOY can pair up to 8 devices, but will only connect to 1 device at a time.

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the USA Spec BT35-TOY. Please refer to the USA Spec website for the latest compatibility listings.

Vehicle Compatibility: The USA Spec BT35-TOY is compatible with select 98-2012 Toyota, Lexus, and Scion vehicles with or without JBL factory systems (as of 1/18/2012).

Installation: The USA Spec BT35-TOY plugs into the back of your Toyota, Lexus, or Scion factory radio. The factory cable gets unplugged from the factory radio and the included T-harness (CAS-TA) takes it place on back of the factory radio. Then the factory cable and the interface harness (CAS-TY35) plugs into the T-harness. The interface harness also plugs into the USA Spec BT35-TOY. Finally, connect the external microphone to the BT35-TOY's mic input and mount the microphone to your dash or windshield.

Note: An additional USA Spec adapter (sold separately) may be required to install the BT35-TOY in some Toyota, Lexus, and Scion vehicles.

    Music quality is Not good.

Written By RockyChicago, Chicago, IL on Friday, May 10, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was excited about this product. It seemed to be everything I wanted. The installation took maybe 20 mins, which is great (if you have the right tools at least). Here's the problems: The sound quality is poor. During a phone call the volume on the stereo had to be cranked way up (the phone volume was on max) and there was some distortion. On music playback the quality was just terrible. I mean no lows and the overall sound was hollow and echoed. My Samsung S3 was what was connected. My wifes iphone was a little bit better but not much. The sound quality for the price is a deal breaker, at least in my car anyway (2004 Sienna).
    Pros:
    Easy installation, connects easily.
    Cons:
Poor sound quality on calls and music is a deal breaker.

2007 Lexus GS350. Works well, easy to install, but...

Written By tom m., phoenix, az on Sunday, April 07, 2013
    Installed in a 2007 Lexus GS350
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ok so I watched a youtube video of how to take the radio out of my 2007 Lexus GS350 and it took me literally 10 minutes to do it! sweet. I installed the BT interface which functions as a second CD player in the car and it worked immediately after syncing with my phone. Sound quality is as good as my CD player. I simply max out the sound on my iphone and then adjust via the volume controller in my car (steering wheel or radio). you can turn off audio cues by the device by simply pressing "scan" on your radio. You can accept calls and return to your audio without a problem but there is a minor flaw...read cons below.
    Pros:
relays sounds through your car's audio as promised. The sound quality is equal to my CD player and I haven't had any issues with volume limitations. I can turn it up as much as my ears can take.
    Cons:
1- the device is supposed to connect automatically every time you get in your car but it doesn't. sometimes it does and sometimes I have to manually connect through my phone's bluetooth setting menu. 2- when a call comes in, it doesn't connect to my car's inherent bluetooth mic and instead connects to its own mic which you would have to wire in the car. alternatively, you can just talk on the phone itself without bluetooth connection, or disconnect the phone from the BT interface device.

BT-35 TOY --- Great Bluetooth Product!

Written By lmjyahoo, Erlanger, KY on Friday, January 04, 2013
Installed in a 2007 Scion tC
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The BT-35 TOY is a 5-STAR PRODUCT! 1) Even with the holidays, shipping was very quick. 2)Installation start to finish in my 2007 Scion tCwas less than 1/2 hour. 3)The MasterSheet for the specific vehicle is very helpful and the installation instructions for the device are great. 4) The unit works just like it is decribed AND the steering wheel controls fuction perfect without any additional wiring harness. 5) Unlike other reviews, music streaming from my Iphone sounds great! I just received and installed the BT-35 TOY in my car this afternoon and am very glad I went with Crutchfield. As opposed to sellers on Ebay, etc, Crutchfield INCLUDES all wiring harness needed, PLUS the vehicle specific MasterSheet, Plus a 60-day return policy, PLUS a one-year warrenty. Much less expensive than replacing the Factory Stereo. In my tC any aftermarket head unit cannot connect with Factory Subs, and there is an additional wiring harness to allow the steering wheel controls to fuction. I wanted hands-free Bluetooth through my car speakers and now I've got it! Great Product!
    Pros:
Easy Install Great sound (calls and music streaming) Much less expensive than replacing an all ready great system just to get Bluetooth. My head unit does not have texting capability, however incoming phone numbers ARE displayed! Didn't expect that.
    Cons:
The ONLY negative with the BT-35 TOY (as opposed to my wife's Factory Bluetooth Head Unit) is you have to make the call from your phone and then the Bluetooth takes over. There are no speed dial keys or address book to pick from off the head-unit. After a call you then have to manually switch back to whatever funtion (AM/FM/CD) you had before the call. However, I was aware of all this prior to purchasing the BT-35 TOY and am very pleased with it.

    Instructions could be Clearer

Written By AndyG, Arlington MA on Wednesday, December 26, 2012

Just installed this and it seems to work fine (2004 Toyota Highlander, base radio/CD changer). But it took me an hour longer to install than it really should have. The instructions give two possible options for connection to the radio:

    a) Use the included 'Y' cable and hook one of the existing female connections to the male part of the 'Y', plugging in the female part of the Y into the radio in place of the existing female connection. b) Don't use the 'Y' cable at all and plug directly into an exiting (presumably open) radio connector.

What they don't tell you is one other option:

    c) Use only the female leg of the 'Y' connector to plug into an exiting open connection on the radio, leaving the male leg dangling.

This would have been obvious had one been able to get a clear view of the back of the radio -- but unless you disconnect all the wires -- you don't get a clear view. Hence, I couldn't see that I had an open connector slot that would fit. All I knew was that none of the existing 3 female wiring bundles matched any of the provided BT-35 connectors.

Hope this saves someone some time.
    Pros:
Seems to work. Can't yet comment on voice quality (mic mounted on windshield near rear-view mirror). Paired easily with Alcatel phone. No loss of CD functionality.
    Cons:
Wish the directions mentioned that one leg of the 'Y' may not be needed.

    Weak Signal

Written By JS, Sunnyvale, CA on Thursday, August 30, 2012

From a technical perspective, it does what it says. It interfaces, via Bluetooth, with an iPhone and allows music playback as well as hands free calling. Installation was super easy if you can twist a screw driver.

Where it falls severely short is in the sound quality for music playback. To achieve normal listening levels, the volume must be turned up 40% more as if the signal is insufficient. Furthermore, the lower frequencies are weaker than the mids and highs making it seem like you are listening to music through a telephone. No amount of bass increase on the stereo or iPhone is sufficient. I am about ready to return this product and put the PA-15 wired solution back in that did not have poor sound performance. For reference this is in a 2006 Toyota Tacoma with the JBL sound system with the BT35 configured either as SAT or CD1 version 1.0b17t.
    Pros:
Does indeed interface with an iPhone 4+ via Bluetooth...
    Cons:
Low volume, no bass, weak signal. I contacted their support number and got a "well, it's just kinda going to be like that, probably..." followed by a big giant shoulder shrug....

Good for calls, not great for music

Written By Jay, Chicago on Monday, August 27, 2012
    Installed in a 2001 Lexus RX300
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 2001 Lexus RX300 without premium audio/navi. This product installed super quick - no finding wires, no cutting or splicing. Just plug and play. It found my phone (iphone 4) right away, and connected without issue. Everyone says they can hear me loud and clear when making calls, and they sound great as well. The audio streaming is a nice feature, but the audio quality is sub par. I find that the cassette adapter produces a much higher quality audio than the bluetooth streaming. Overall, great product if you need to make bluethooth calls.
    Pros:
    Call quality. Ease of installation.
    Cons:
    Audio streaming

    Great value and product.

Written By Sierraoaks, Shell Beach, CA on Monday, August 20, 2012

I have tried many different approaches to BT in my 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser, all very disappointing until I installed the BT-35. Works like clockwork every time I turn on the ignition. The integrated volume as well as the track up and phone answer from the steering wheel is GREAT. Maybe my ear is not what it used to be, however I thought music sounded wonderful and audio books are the best. Installation was easy and mike placement next to the gauge array works fantastic. I just ordered one for my son for his birthday. Great Buy
    Pros:
    All is great!
    Cons:
No cons considering the alternative, no BT.

    Installs easily, music sounds awful

Written By Devon, Alexandria, VA on Thursday, August 16, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The installation for this adapter was very easy, just pull the dash unit, plug this unit into the back and you're done. 10 minutes if you know how to pull a stereo. The receiver consistently pairs automatically with my Galaxy Nexus, and the Track up and Track down buttons control the Music app, and Track up skips to the next song on Pandora. That's very convenient, and much easier than fumbling with unlocking my phone just to change tracks. However...

What affects me more (and the reason I bought the adapter) is music sounds terrible through this adapter. I don't know if it's the case for all bluetooth systems or not, but the sound quality reminds me of the advent of MP3s (remember 32kbps files). Everything high end gets tinny and the sound as a whole gets a mechanical quality to it. This is especially true for classical music, but I can even hear the lot bit-rate chop in my heavy metal. And I'm not hearing this through a $4000 hi-fi system. This is apparent even through the inherent muddiness of factory paper cone speakers.

There are people that won't notice the difference, but I'd say about 50% of people won't be satisfied by the sound quality of this transmitter.

The included mic is as bad as every other mic I've heard. They all sound like you're in a bathtub. From what I can tell there is no place to hard-mount a mic that won't transmit a ton of road noise and echo. I'm okay with that, I don't use the Bluetooth for phone calls anyway so it doesn't affect me.
    Pros:
Easy Install Factory Track Up/Down works with My Music and Pandora
    Cons:
Sound Quality Sound Clarity Microphone Sound Quality

Not compatible with certain Toyota Vehicles with Rear Seat Entertainme

Written By TimG, Bend, OR on Friday, July 27, 2012
Installed in a 2003 Toyota Sequoia
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A little slip of paper inside the manufacturer's instructions, "Note 4 Revisions" explained how many of the features would NOT WORK with certain Toyotas with Rear Seat Entertainment. 98-06 Tundra, 02-17 Sequoia, 98-95 4runner, 01-06 Highlander, 98-05 Sienna. Crutchfield did not ask if I had this option on my Sequoia.

The install instructions weren't correct as the unit had to be installed in a different place - found out AFTER installing as Crutchfield instructed. I really liked the non-bluetooth model I installed in another vehicle. This BT model sounded awful and important features didn't work (for my car). Glad I bought it from Crutchfield as a full refund is coming with the return.

Pretty good way to add bluetooth streaming to older vehicles

Written By brianw13a, Toledo, OH on Sunday, April 22, 2012
    Installed in a 2003 Lexus RX300
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall I'm really satisfied with this product. The call quality was excellent and I was pleasantly surprised at how good the music quality is. It was easy to install and get connected with my Android phone. The only cons I have is that on occasion it will drop audio (music) for a split second which I didn't have with the same phone and a factory stereo. The voice annunciation is a little annoying but I've heard rumors that it can be turned off. I have yet to find any documentation on that. Installation instructions where pretty good and I think I had it completed in under 2 hours - maybe an hour as I really wasn't paying attention. I was instructed to purchase the CAS-TLC which I suspect was used to allow both the CD changer and the BT35 to function. I found that the with the CD player connected that the BT35 would not work correctly and since I haven't touched a CD in years I decided to just disconnect the CD player. Having done that, I don't think I needed that cable as the BT35 would have connected directly to the factory stereo.
    Pros:
    Great sound quality. Easy installation.
    Cons:
Voice annunciation, dropped music frames. In my case the directions called for a different cable which I purchased separately (CAS-TLC) - not sure it's needed for my installation.

The product works, but music sound quality, lacking

Written By kdogg, Dallas,tx on Friday, March 30, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was excited about ordering this product. I have not had any experience with bluetooth music streaming, but I figured it was worth a shot. The product was easy to install. Took me about 30 minutes. I had to find my own solution for installing the mic up the "A pillar" ; however, found a solution online. Back to the sound quality. I can tell you that you can hear your songs. It is a nice feature to have, but the bluetooth A2DP is just not ready for prime time. I was integrating with an iphone 4s, so I know that the streaming software on the 4s , should be the latest and greatest. I used the factory dips on my 99 4runner.

I called the makers of the bt35-toy and talked to one of their tech guys. I asked him if the quality is just 80% or if there was something I should do. He mentioned upping my iphone4s volume, but that is not it..... I just think the quality is what it is.
    Pros:
The hands free calling works well. I can request iphone 4s siri commands through the mic and call out songs to play.
    Cons:
The product works as designed, although sound quality (for music A2DP, is lacking in sound quality, especially at the top range).

    Works great after some effort

Installed in a 2005 Toyota Sienna
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ordered this for a 2005 Toyota Sienna XLE limited with JBL sound, NAV, and rear seat entertainment. Phone is an IPhone 4S

I had some problems with this install but after working with USASPEC it is now working great. Things you need to know:

    (1) You don't need the CAS-NIS_EXT cable (instruction manual Page 4). They have now changed the instructions. You install the BT35 in the rear of the car, and extend the mic cable to the front

    (2) The BT35 I got from Crutchfield was incompatible with my car. It was build number 1.0b7 - radio would not see it USASPEC sent me a BT35 with build number 1.0b17 - works fine

    (3) I used dip setting 3 + 4 on My radio sees the BT35 as a CD changer. The factory CD and DVD are unaffected

    (4) You can find the ECU by removing the right rear cup holder and storage bin. The bottom half of the ECU is visible behind the opening I found that easier than removing the panel. The socket you want is on the left side, bottom socket. Remove the bottom bolt for better access. Remove the courtesy light panel by the floor to snake the mic wire. I velcro'd the BT 35 to the ECU to keep it from rattling around
    Pros:
Provides an elegant solution for integrating the iphone with the car radio. Can be controlled by steering wheel controls and radio buttons USASpec support was very helpful, both by phone and email.
    Cons:
Took me quite a while to get it working. Text display doesnt show music titles Phone interaction seems to time out if it takes too long to set up the phone call. For example, if trying to voice dial with Siri it seems to say 'call ended' while I am still trying to establish a call.

    2007 Highlander Hybrid Limited w/JBL w/nav

Written By Justin, Portland, OR on Saturday, March 03, 2012
Installed in a 2007 Toyota Highlander
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I hesitate to rate this product because, although it wasn't compatible with my system, it appears to be a quality product. I bought this to add Bluetooth connectivity to my wife's' 2007 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited. The factory unit comes in two double-din pieces, one for the cd/cassette, and one for the touchscreen that integrates display of the nav/audio/climate control/hybrid info. This integrated system is impossible to upgrade without loss of functionality to something. So, in an effort to [at the very least] add bluetooth connectivity, I purchased the BT35-TOY. Unfortunately, this unit would not function properly, regardless of the various jumper setting recommendations in the setup materials. Pairing the unit with my DroidX was easy, but use of the phone was impossible beyond that. On the most functional jumper setting, I was able to get the stereo to let me place a call, but I couldn't hear the recipient, and, the ignition had to be cycled in order to get stereo functionality back. Rosen used to make a unit for this car, but no longer.
    Pros:
Easy installation with Crutchfield's instructions. Simple to configure. As always, Crutchfeild is a class act, they deserve our business.
    Cons:
Didn't function with my particular head unit, but don't let that deter you if yours is different. Unit had a USB jack, but no instruction of its functionality in the product manual.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This device is really neat. I get in my car and it connects. The voice says connected... If I have Pandora already loaded...I push the up button and it starts playing. If I get a phone call it comes up automatically. The reviewer ahead of mine was complaining about the voice saying connected. You can turn audio prompts off on the system.
    Pros:
Very easy to install. Easy to use. Works good.
    Cons:
    Sound quality could be better.

    BT35 TOY in a 2007 Tacoma

Written By Mike, Albuquerque, NM on Tuesday, February 07, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works great in my 2007 Tacoma. Paired up to my Droid Incredible the first try, and connects automatically every time I start the truck. Incoming calls display the last 9 digits on the factory radio, and the accept/reject function works from the up/down seek buttons on the steering wheel controls and the front of the radio. Call quality is fine, but as with any bluetooth or hands-free setup, it takes a bit of testing to get the volume set right to avoid too much echo on the other end. Audio streaming sounds nice and clear, and I love being able to advance tracks from steering wheel and radio seek buttons. This works for mp3 playback as well as streaming Pandora.
    Pros:
Easy install, works just as described, and no more wires!
    Cons:
Little voice says "connected" each time I start the truck. I like that my phone connects every time like it's supposed to, but the voice telling me will probably get annoying after a while. Overall, that's my only minor complaint.
