Why buy a headphone amp?

High-performance headphones need high-quality amplification to perform up to their full potential. If you connect them directly to the headphone jack on your computer, iPod®, or stereo receiver, you may be disappointed. A separate headphone amplifier sends a stronger, cleaner signal to your headphones.

Our take on the Audioengine D1

by Dave Bar
angled_view

Get fantastic sound from your digital audio sources

How do you get sound from your PC? If you're still doing it the old fashioned way, by plugging into your computer's headphone jack, then you should definitely know about the Audioengine D1. This tiny, outboard digital-to-analog converter simply connects to one of your PC's USB ports, and bypasses your computer's built-in audio circuitry. By processing your digital music files outside the noisy environment of your computer, you'll hear far more dynamic and detailed sound that you can really savor on your headphones, powered speakers, or stereo system. The D1 also includes an optical digital input so you can enjoy similar improvements in sound with your old CD player, network music streamer, set-top box, game console, or almost any other audio device with an optical digital output.

Make your headphones sing

A pair of good headphones can give you a real taste of high-end audio without breaking the bank. But you're unlikely to find high-end sound coming out of your headphones if you plug them straight into your laptop. That's because most computer manufacturers use low-cost, low-performance circuitry to power their headphone jacks. The headphone amp inside the D1 will quickly spoil you. It delivers richer, deeper bass and clearer highs while revealing layers of musical detail that ordinary headphone jacks obscure.

Easy plug-and-play operation

Adding the D1 to a system is simple — just plug it into any USB port on your computer, where it will install itself and be ready for use in a matter of seconds. From there, just plug in your 'phones, or connect the preamp outputs to your powered speakers or stereo and you're done. The handy volume knob lets you control listening levels for both headphone and preamp outputs.

The plug-and-play D1 delivers sparkling clear sound from your computer to your headphones, stereo system, or powered speakers (Audioengine A2 speakers shown)

Features

Overview: The D1 DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) is designed to connect between your computer's USB port or an optical digital output, and your audio system or headphones. It can also be used as a portable DAC (soundcard) with a laptop computer. The two signal inputs are a USB Type-B port (USB Type-A to USB Type-B cable included) and an optical digital (Toslink) jack. There are two outputs, rear panel analog stereo RCA jacks and a front panel 3.5mm headphone jack. Both outputs are controlled by the rotary volume knob on the front panel and the RCA outputs are muted when headphones are plugged into the front panel mini-jack output. The small switch on the front panel lights when the D1 is turned on.

Note: If connecting to a television set's optical output, please make sure that you are able to select PCM as the default optical out audio format from your television's Audio menu. This DAC is not compatible with multi-channel audio signals and will not work with televisions that do not output PCM.

Specifications:

  • Power Requirement: 5V/130 mA; powered by USB (USB connection required for power even when using the optical digital input to transfer audio signal)

This is a good unit. Its small, it provides better amplification, and you'll clearly hear the difference in the dynamic range in volume and tone. This is particularly useful if you are using full size head phones of high quality.
Pros:
small, versatile, good value, great improvement over in computer amplifier
Cons:
have not found any yet.

Its optical input is great!

Written By dankotee, Fremont, CA on Monday, April 29, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I would recommend this to people who are considering portable DAC, including NuForce. I ordered the open box and it came in excellent condition. No scratch, no dent, no sign of use. However, the USB cable that it came with does not work. The computer cannot detect it and I could not hear any sound. So I read their troubleshooting section and switched the cable. It worked immediately! One thing I like the most about this DAC is its optical input. I do not own a receiver, so I can't use my AKG headphone to watch movie. But now I can connect this to my TV and use my headphone to watch movie or play video games without waking up other people. The size is okay, it is pretty heavy too. But then you know the build is sturdy and a lot of "meat" is packed inside. So it is not as portable as DragonFly.
Pros:
Optical input
Cons:
Size is bigger than other portable DAC

Cleaner bass, more balanced sound

Written By Alberto T., Huntington Station, NY on Wednesday, March 27, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I must say the reviews I had read here on Crutchfield and elsewhere were right on. The Audioengine D1 makes a big difference in listening to music from my computer. It's not earth shattering, it's subtle but definitive. I'm using the D1 paired to an Audio-Technica ATH-M50. At first listen I noticed bass did not sound boomy as it did before (not the headphone's fault), even from a poor youtube source of the Harlem Shake. Next I tried some higher quality files from iTunes... wow! Nat Cole's vocal in The Very Thought of You were more refined, instruments were a LOT more crisp and discernible. Just about anything I listened to sounded better, as if I had been listening to music through a heavy blanket. Listening to music is even more enjoyable now with the Audioengine D1! I have only used the D1 attached via the USB port, I have yet to listen to it through the optical in. But so far it's VERY good!
Pros:
Better controlled bass Cleaner vocals Makes instruments more discernible

Great sound from this DAC

Written By CMM, VT on Monday, March 18, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm using the D1 with the PSB Alpha PS1 amplified speakers - and it is a great pairing (my PC is a home build, core i7-870, Win-7 64b w/ 16GB ram). Clean, accurate sound from my mp3's (I also have WAV files and itunes AAC as well). I use a belkin gold series 6 foot usb cable to connect with my computer, which works well (10 ft did not work for me). Setup was easy, once I switched to the 6ft cable. Windows easily recognizes the D1 and auto installs drivers. Without a doubt -- using a DAC w/ your computer is well worth it. Before this, I had always used the line out from either a basic sound card, or in my current build - the line out from the built in sound off of the MB (yea, I know- lame :) Using the DAC basically improves every part of the sound coming from your speakers - lows, mids and highs. I just got the PSB's (replaced bad m-audio av30's) - and I had a chance to use this DAC w/ the m-audio's for a couple days (before they choked)... and WOW -- amazing difference in the sound. Now, using the PSB's w/ this DAC - the sound is simply amazing.,.. I couldn't be happier (course, the PSB's are a few notches above the m-audio in quality :) Highly recommended.
Pros:
Build quality, excellent sound. USB powered. Large volume control knob on front of unit. Good warranty.
Cons:
A tad pricey... quality 10 foot USB cable to computer did not work w/ the D1 - presumably due to USB power requirement (6 foot worked fine -thankfully - since 2-3 foot was NOT going to cut it for my setup)

GOOD HEADPHONE AMP

Written By MURRAY IM, SAN DIEGO, CA on Wednesday, March 13, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to use with my receiver. Not a good application. I could only use it with the rca out put of a single component. This is better used in a digital computer set-up.
Pros:
Used on a single component like my oppo 103 player, it sounds good. The sound is almost three dimensional.
Cons:
Crutchfield sales said it could be used on my receiver. So far no way.

Good sounds, NO ground isolation so you need to be aware of you your installation requirements. Works well with other AudioEngine components. Flawless with my Laptop, Hum (ground) loop issues with my desktop PC.
Pros:
Easy (up to) 96KHz/24Bit i(USB) interface for Hi-Re music playback, useful volume control, and it sounds good.
Cons:
No ground isolation...which may or not be a problem for your application. Need some Velcro feet since it is soo light.

Awesome!

Written By Big Al, Naperville, IL on Tuesday, February 05, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I researched a lot to pick the perfect DAC/AMP for work. I have the headphones on all day and the sound from the PC just wasn't good enough. I bought better headphones that helped a little but still it was not rich and full. I talked to Derrick at Crutchfield and he recommended the Audioengine D1 over the other model I was considering. I ordered it and it arrived well-packed and quickly. Installation was a snap. Windows recognized it and installed it immediately even making it the audio output. I didn't have to do anything but plug it in and insert my headphones. When I did the sound came alive. It is rich and full and the bass is more powerful and very well defined. Most people wouldn't bother for work to do this but I am here to tell you it makes listening to music at work so enjoyable the time just flies by!
Pros:
Super easy to install, great music quality, good build quality, easy to use volume control knob.
Cons:
None

Wow

Written By Ken, San Francisco on Saturday, January 12, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For three years I've had a pair of Audioengine 2's that I've been using with my iMac. Great little speakers, but when I recently got a D1 on the recommendation of reviews- wow! The difference in clarity with 256 kbps itunes files is absolutely amazing- It's as if a blanket has been lifted from the A2's. Mids and highs are MUCH crisper, and it's not even broken in yet. I listen to everything from bluegrass to EDM, and it all sounds vastly better with greater sound separation. Just don't forget to change the Midi settings for iOS per the instructions to 96 khz and 24 bits- I was disappointed until I did that.
Pros:
Inexpensive, portable, crisp and bright sound, better stereo separation
Cons:
No remote

So much better

Written By LoveQualitySound, Silverlake, WA on Thursday, January 10, 2013

My computer headphone jack surged and blew my Rotel. VERY COSTLY. So, I bought this to remedy that issue and avoid future service repairs. I didn't expect much of a sound improvement, but it truly is a HUGE improvement in sound quality. I have a high end Gigabyte board with Realtek HD audio on-board, which I admit I was actually satisfied with. So, when I plugged in the Audioengine D1 and heard better bass control on my Boston sub, warmer and richer tones from top to bottom, I was shocked. Seriously, very excited.
Pros:
For me, I like that it's small, I like that it has RCAs... It improves sound. Plug and play--took my computer five seconds before it informed me the "device is ready to use" after plugging it in. Volume control is handy.
Cons:
I'd love it if this thing had HDMI. I could see how some people would want a remote with it. I understand that for some people, the fact it's small is going to be a con. It might move around. Might need some velcro? Personally, I like that it's small.

Audioengine D1

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Using the DAC between my CD player and tube amp in a stereo application. Arrived in good shape.
Pros:
Seems to work well. Especially note increased clarity in the mid and high ranges. Glad I bought it.
Cons:
Very small and light...moves around unless you secure it in some way. If not used with a USB port have to purchase a wall adapter for power.

Best DAC fro the money

Written By Rick, Oley, PA on Sunday, December 09, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Seems today everyone is interested in video entertainment, and enhancements and features for that purpose. I'm sure there are still others out there, beside myself, who love music far more. I have a great audio system, including an incredible tube amplifier that my son built for me. I recently purchased the Audioengine D1 DAC so that I could stream high quality music from my computer to my system. Believe me when I tell you that words cannot describe how fantastic this setup sounds. If you love music as I do, you owe it to yourself to purchase this missing link and begin to enjoy all that the internet has to offer an audiophile.
Pros:
Essentially no setup involved. The first device I ever found that is truely "plug and play". Built in high quality headphone amplifier. Extremely low cost compared to other DACs on the market. Very portable. No additional power supply required, being powered by the USB power buss.
Cons:
None whatsoever.

Paired with Audioengine Speakers

Written By Sleepy, Dallas on Tuesday, October 30, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I paired these up with some Audioengine powered bookshelf speakers for casual listening in my bedroom. The source is FLAC and MP3 files off my computer. The combination has a nice warm tone and does a gorgeous job with sparse arrangements like jazz combos or singer/songwriter type stuff. It has enough punch for a little rock but I don't think it is up to a massive orchestral recording. I bought it for the simpler stuff so I am quite happy listening to Feist or Fleet Foxes on it while hanging out in the bedroom. I don't like headphones much so I can't comment on it as a straight headphone amp.
Pros:
great DAC, good problem solver component

8 Time World Hit Recording Artist & D1 Fan!

Written By Kris Allen & Southern Thunder, Nashville, TN/Charleston, W.V. on Wednesday, October 10, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Let me tell you I had this D1 hooked up to my system faster than I could unwrap it from its packaging, fast and easy with instant results! Now I have to say at first I wasn't blown away when I plugged in my Sennheiser HD-600, it sounded fantastic but not overkill. However when I plugged this into my laptop controled PA I was blown away! I know my system! Well... I knew my old system, I LOVE my new system!!! I use Crown Macro Tech amps (5000i on mains, 5000i on bass) & JBL SR 4733x & 4722. I have my HP laptop going into a TC Helicon then into a Presonus mixer All connections are Monster Cable 1000's. You know I always thought this set-up was sweet but side by side after the D1...ain't no way I would want to go back without it!!! If you have a good or great system you owe it to yourself to buy one of these lil things! There was so much that was missing in the sound without it! Everything has more clarity, more alive, a richer and full sound...THIS IS ON A FLAT EQ!!! I am now buying yet another D1 for my music radio show I host (Late Night with Rob & Kris, on ghtalkradio) for my HD-600 I wear. BUY IT, YOU WILL LOVE IT!
Pros:
The sound you will get!
Cons:
Buy a better usb cable if you have a high end system & I wish I bought this a long time ago!
