Why would I need an iPodĀ® adapter?

An iPod adapter allows you to connect your iPod to your car stereo, then access your playlists with your stereo's controls - a great idea for several reasons. One, you can scroll through your song titles on your stereo's larger display, instead of squinting down at your iPod. Two, you can route the adapter cable to your glove compartment or center console, so your iPod stays safely out of sight. Three, the iPod adapter keeps your iPod fully charged, so it's ready to rock when you leave your car. And last of all, some adapters bypass your iPod's internal digital-to-analog converter, using your stereo's superior DAC to turn your files back into music.

Our take on the Peripheral iPod® Adapter

by Tim Sprinkle

You can listen to your iPod — including newer iPods, like the nano, classic, and iPhone — in the car without replacing your factory stereo. All it takes is a CD changer-compatible factory stereo, a vehicle-specific cable adapter, and this iPod2car adapter box from Peripheral. Just install the iPod2car adapter box in an out-of-the-way spot, connect it to your vehicle's radio with the cable adapter, and hook up your iPod. You'll be listening to all of your favorite tracks through your car speakers in no time.

The iPod2car adapter allows you to control the party with your radio buttons (even steering wheel controls if you have them) — including controls for track up/down, fast forward, and rewind. The iPod itself stays active, too, giving you access to all of your playlists and filters. And you won't have to worry about sound quality. The wired connection ensures the best possible performance from your portable player.

Once everything is installed, you'll be able to access the iPod by pressing "CD" or "AUX" on your radio. And the iPod2car will even charge your iPod while it's plugged in. Peripheral gives you everything you need to bring iPod convenience on the road.

Note: If you haven't already, please enter your vehicle information or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to find out if we have a vehicle-specific cable adapter that'll connect the iPod2car to your vehicle.

Compatibility Note: Be sure to check "Hands-on Research" for specific iPod model compatibility with this iPod adapter.

    Features

Factory Radio Compatibility: The iSimple PXDP interface allows select iPods/iPhone to be connected to the factory radio with CD-changer controls, using a vehicle specific cable (sold separately). Your vehicle must be equipped with or have the ability to support an external CD changer. Please consult the Crutchfield Car Selector to see if your vehicle and factory radio are compatible.
    • Not compatible with radios that have a built-in 6 disc changer.
    • Not compatible with any factory external audio source such as XM tuner, CD changer, or Cassette player. These devices must be disconnected and will no longer function.

iPod Control Compatibility: The iPod is controlled using the CD Changer commands on the factory radio (or steering wheel if equipped). Track skip forward/backward and fast forward/rewind within a song work just like on a CD. The controls on the iPod remain active so you have full playback control. The iPod2car interface does not disable any functionality of the iPod. The iSimple PXDP also charges iPod battery when connected. The iSimple PXDP interface is "Made for iPod/iPhone" compatible and supports the following iPod/iPhone model features when connected to a compatible OEM (factory) radio using a Peripheral vehicle specific cable (sold separately); as of 4/30/2013.

    Satisfied

Written By Nathan, VA on Tuesday, October 02, 2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This adapter kid works as I expected it to based on the other reviews I read. The unit's functionality is limited, but it makes it so I can listen to my iPod through my factory stereo. I did, at first, receive a defective unit, but getting it replaced was a breeze. Cheers to the helpful folks at Crutchfield!
    Pros:
Plays iPod through my factory stereo, easy to setup
    Cons:
Receieved defective unit on first try, made in China

    2000 Jaguar S-Type = easy installation

Written By Luis B, Tucson, Az on Saturday, January 28, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this adapter on my 2000 Jaguar S-Type. It was a very easy installation, great product for the price. It took about 30 minutes all together. I removed the factory stereo, by removing the two tear drop shaped inserts on each side with a flathead screw driver, thus exposing the bolt on each side. Then removed the half moon shape peace at the bottom which exposes two bolts. The entire stereo along with the climate control comes out. Now u should have the ford harness that comes with the adapter, remove stock harness block(cd changer) and connect the new harness. Connect the other end directly to the adapter, and connect the iPod wire onto the idapter as shown in the manual, connect to iPod/iPhone then press CD right on the stereo and u shoul be playin ur iPod or iPhone right away. Ive never once installed anything as far as car audio, but it was very simple.
    Pros:
Charges iPod or iPhone while playing music. Crisp clean quality. Easy installation
    Cons:
Goes loud but not the loudest, I'm pretty sure that is fixable. Have to sacrifice cd changer

    The Perfect Solution

This is an amazing product to allow you to keep the stock head-unit, but still have iPod input. I didn't want to put in a new head unit because of the cost and the risk of it getting stolen (soft top Wrangler).

Amazing product! Easy installation via included install guide!
    Pros:
Allows you to skip songs from your head unit controls (I have my iPod in my glovebox and never touch it). Charges your iPod all the time!
    Cons:
Can't change playlist from the headunit (this doesn't affect me because I just run my iPod on shuffle all the time. Have to have a CD changer input

    Not bad

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product was not my 1st choice. But it had all what I wanted. So I decided to purchase this. Upon arrival I was excited to install on my 2002 F150. Followed instructions took about 45 mins I wanted the installation right. It was plug n play but and yes there is a but. I installed my 4th gen iPod touch and started to play. Then the thing went crazy. It would play a song then skips not 1 not 2 or even 3 songs n he same album. I had the random off. It would also play n skip like it was a cd that had a scratch in. So I decided to change the dip switches if that would help. I read in a few reviews that turn on the 6th switch would help sound. I got a sound of loud sqeaching from the system. I contiuned to make adjustments but 2 hours later I decided to remove the iPod adaptor. The only reason I gave 3 stars is do to the return policy. It was quick n fast. I decided that an FM modulator was a best fix for me so I can have both my 6cd changer and an iPod adaptor.

    Doesn't last

I don't normally leave reviews, but thought this item needed one given my
experience. I have now had THREE of these in 3 different vehicles. Each one
died almost exactly 2 years upon using it. The first time I was miffed, the
second time suspicious, now I am pretty convinced: This is a nice product that
works very well but simply doesn't last. You can purchase with confidence if
you don't plan on having it very long but I wouldn't expect a very durable
    product.

    Peripheral iPod® Adapter

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This adapter does exactly what it's supposed to do. Install was very easy. I have a
2005 Chrysler convertible and I wanted to keep the stock head unit intact, I don't
like after market head units in there. I had to get the adapter cable as well for it to
work and the web site here even tells what cable you need to go along with your
purchase. Simply put, a very good ipodĀ® adapter with a very easy install, less than
5 mins, no splicing, just plug and play. Hope this helps.

    Ipod adapter

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great product. Gets rid of the extra wires and allows the use of the steering
wheel controls. The only problems are that it shows"Err" on the display when in the
"Disc" mode. Also, it puts dashes where the clock readout usually is until I
press the time button. It blanks out the clock whenever I change tracks from the
steering wheel controls. However, just a press of the Time button shows the
clock again. All things considered, these are minor problems that I can live with
when you compare them with the advantages of the unit. I would have given 5 stars
    if the display wasn't affected.

    Excellent product for my Wrangler

Written By Jesse N, Baton Rouge LA on Friday, January 21, 2011

Due to the threat of theft when the top is off of my 06 wrangler, I wanted to listen to my
iphone through my stock stereo system, and this product allows me to do exactally that.
the interface depends on the stock systems capabilities, so do not expect much from it
(i.e. you will still have to control the music from the ipod potentially) but for my purposes
    this does not bother me,

I would suggest getting an aftermarket head unit if you are looking for a good interface,
but if you would like to listen to your ipod through the stock system this is exactly what
    you need.

Pros: Easy install and works good for iPod 3G. Turns down iPod music when phone rings. Charges iPod
Cons: annoying prompt for airplane mode each time you plug it in (answer "no"), external blue tooth hands free disabled (or else it plays over bluetooth speaker).

Awesome idea. Works well, pretty much as advertised. I used the advice of previous customers and turned on dip switch 6 to boost volume.I am very happy to not need cd's anymore. One small gripe is the annoying time count on my factory stereo. It alternates between 1:00 and 2:00, without actually counting track time.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

What a great product. It only took about 45minutes to install and it sounds fantastic ! The best thing is that it works with the steering wheel controls just like a CD disc does. You can also use the buttons on the radio or use the iPod controls. Since I have the factory installed Infinity sound system, it really sounds great. No more fading in and out with interference from local radio stations, which is really annoying. I would recommend this product to anyone with a decent factory stereo system. It sure beats changing out the whole works. I'd give ten stars if it were an option.

    It's acceptable

Written By Evan, Palo Alto, CA on Monday, May 25, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed it on my 07' Jeep Liberty with a RBK factory stereo. Had to permanently disconnect the Sirius radio connection which I believe also serves as the CD changer connection. No big deal, I'm not using neither. Installation took less than 30 minutes - it was quite easy to pull the factory stereo out and get behind & underneath the dash since the glove compartment pops out easily. The sound is awesome much better than a FM connection. The controls however are very limited through the RBK radio. It cannot select a playlist so you have to go to the iPod (mine was a 4th generation) directly, and it doesn't display the song title but that has nothing to do with the product - its the RBK radio itself. Overall I think it's an acceptable solution since I didn't want to give up the factory look. The only thing that I didn't like and was surprised by is that it charges the iPod constantly & continuously even when the keys are pulled out and car is parked for days. I don't know what's the logic behind that design, perhaps the iPod knows when to stop charging. Net net, I give it 3-stars.

Installed the adapter in my 2004 Jeep Wrangler with factory stereo, and it's great! Very easy to install (maybe 2 hours total) and the sound is very high quality. Everything worked properly once it was connected - the adapter turns my iPod on and off with the jeep, keeps it charged, and I can control basic functions from the stereo. Very cool product, highly recommended.

Very good product and easy installation. It sounds even better than the stereo radio! My only complaint would be that the necessary configurations needed for the initial setup were not listed on line as stated in the instructions. I had to call the technical phone number to get them.
