Sonos

Our take on the Sonos CONNECT:AMP

by Tara W.

Listen to music from your computer and the Internet on any speakers

Get ready for more of your favorite music in any room of your house. The Sonos® CONNECT:AMP makes it simple, and you won't have to run wires around your home. Hook this amplified music player up to a pair of speakers, and it connects to the Internet and your computer wirelessly through the Sonos BRIDGE (sold separately).

ZonePlayer 120

Powerful amplifier for crystal-clear playback

A built-in 55-watt-per-channel amplifier delivers your music in full-bodied, dynamic stereo sound. And the CONNECT:AMP's compact design means it can fit in much smaller spaces than traditional stereo components.

Pair this player with Audioengine's high-performance P4 speakers for a great-sounding — and cosmetically matched — system.

Sonos controllers

You probably already own a Sonos controller

You can use an iPhone®, iPod touch®, iPad®, or Android™ phone to control any and all Sonos players. A free download turns your smartphone and tablet into a full-fledged Sonos controller. Easily navigate and search through playlists and tracks stored on your computer, or select an Internet radio station. Create customized playlists on the fly for individual rooms or for playback over your entire Sonos system. You can also mute or adjust the volume of each of your players.

Rhapsody®, Pandora® Internet radio, SiriusXM, and more at your fingertips

The Sonos system works seamlessly with a host of Internet-based digital music services, including Rhapsody, Pandora, Spotify, last.fm™, Napster®, and SiriusXM Internet Radio. Rhapsody offers instant access to millions of songs and ad-free radio stations through your Sonos Controller. SIRIUS Internet Radio gives you access to over 80 channels of programming. Every Sonos system includes free 30-day trials of these two services, so you can start listening the moment you take it out of the box. Pandora and last.fm create customized Internet radio streams just for you — all you have to do is enter the name of your favorite song or artist. And because Sonos connects directly to the Internet for all of these music services, you don't even have to turn on your PC.

MOG

MOG — over 15 million songs, available instantly

MOG is an award-winning online music service with one of the largest and best-sounding streaming catalogs in the industry. It's the only service to offer all of its music in the 320 kbps MP3 format — that higher bit rate translates to better sound. In fact, we use it frequently in the Crutchfield Labs to test high-end audio gear. MOG's "Primo" service ($9.99/month) gives you unlimited, ad-free access to their extensive music library of over 15 million songs on a wide range of devices including Sonos® network music players, Samsung TVs, your computer, iPad®, iPhone®, and Android™ devices.

Play music stored on your iPhone®, iPad®, or iPod touch®

Sonos now gives you convenient wireless access to music and podcasts stored in the Music app of iOS devices, for playback throughout your entire Sonos system. This function works on devices running iOS6 or later (see below for full list of compatible Apple devices). The system even lets you connect multiple Apple players at once. For instance, you can queue up songs from your iPhone to play in the kitchen while you cook, and your spouse can stream a podcast in the den at the same time.

Expand your Sonos system

You can have up to 32 Sonos music players in your system, and each one can play an independent selection of individual tracks or playlists. Listen to jazz in the den while your spouse plays rock music in the kitchen, or pump a single playlist of songs throughout the entire house during a party.

    Connections

    Features

Overview: The Sonos Connect:Amp (formerly the ZP120 Zone Player) works exclusively with the Sonos Digital Music System. In a multi-room sound system, one player is connected to your home network, and each subsequent player can be connected by wire or wirelessly to the system. The Connect:Amp player includes a built-in state-of-the-art digital amplifier that can power large or small speakers.

Controls/Indicators: The Connect:Amp player's only controls are a mute button and a rocker-type volume control, both mounted on the front of the unit. An LED status indicator flashes white when powering up or connecting to the Sonos Digital Music System, and lights solid white when powered up and connected to the music system.

Zones: You can place a Sonos player in each zone where you want to listen to music. The Sonos Digital Music System can accept up to 32 players (such as the Connect:Amp, the un-amplified Connect, Play:3 or Play:5). You can control the entire system from a your PC or Mac, your smartphone or tablet (using a free app), or a separate Sonos controller (such as the CR200). With multiple zones, you can choose to play the same song in different rooms, or different songs in different rooms.

Placement: It is not necessary to place the player in a visible place in the home. The transmitting range of the Sonos Digital Music System is approximately 100 feet. Thick walls, microwave ovens, and the presence of other wireless devices can interfere with or block the wireless network signals. When interference occurs, you can relocate the Connect:Amp player in order to receive the signal, make a wired (Ethernet) connection, or add a Sonos Bridge between the router and the Connect:Amp player to extend the wireless range.

Sonos Controller Software: The supplied setup disc contains the software for the Sonos Controller, which allows you to control the Sonos Digital Music System from your PC or Mac. The supplied Sonos Controller software is compatible with Windows XP (SP3), Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Macintosh OS X (10.6 or higher) operating systems. You can also control the Sonos system with your smartphone or tablet running one of the following apps:

    • Sonos Controller for Android: The free Sonos Controller application is available for Android smartphones or tablets from the Android Market.
    • Sonos Controller for iPhone or iPad: The free Sonos Controller application is available for the iPhone, iPod touch, or the iPad from the Apple App Store, or it can be downloaded from iTunes and synced to your device.

Music Sources: The Sonos Connect:Amp can play music from a variety of sources. Any Sonos controller can make a music or source selection. You can choose from the following:

    • Internet Radio: Sonos includes a radio guide that provides immediate access to thousands of free Internet radio stations and broadcast programs.
    • Music Services: You can choose from several music services that provide audio on a per-song, per audiobook, or subscription basis. Some examples include MOG, SiriusXM Internet Radio, Pandora, Slacker, Spotify, Rhapsody, and iHeart radio.
    • Apple iOS Device: The latest software upgrade from Sonos now plays your iTunes music direct from your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad (iOS 6 required) anywhere there is a Sonos speaker or player. No more syncing your Apple mobile device with your computer just to hear your iTunes music on Sonos.
    • Music Folders: The Sonos system can play music from any computer or network-attached storage (NAS) device on your home network where you have shared music folders. The system indexes your music folders so you can view your music collection by categories (artists, albums, composers, genres, or tracks).

Supported Formats: The Sonos Digital Music System supports the following formats: MP3 (compressed), WMA (compressed), AAC+, iTunes, Ogg Vorbis, Audible (format 4), Apple Lossless, FLAC (lossless), WAV (uncompressed), and AIFF (uncompressed).

Simple Installation: Setting up the Connect:Amp is quick and easy. No technical or wiring expertise is required and no need to break through walls or re-wire your entire house. All you need is a high-speed Internet connection and a router to get started. One player or Bridge in your system must be connected to the router and all the rest will work wirelessly. You can add more players in more rooms without additional wires.

Optional Wireless Subwoofer: The optional Sonos Sub is a wireless subwoofer that can be associated with the Connect:Amp to enhance the sound in the room. The set-up procedure for the Sub lets you select the size of the speakers connected to the Connect:Amp, and adjusts the crossover automatically. Through the Sonos Controller software, you can also set the phase and level of the subwoofer to match it to the stereo speakers.

Note: The Connect:Amp also has a mono subwoofer output for connecting a traditional "wired" subwoofer. See the Connections section below for details.

    Network Requirements

Home Network: To access Internet music services, Internet radio, and any digital music stored on your computer or Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device, your home network must meet the following requirements:

    • High-speed DSL/Cable modem, or fiber-to-the-home broadband connection for proper playback of Internet-based music services. If your Internet service provider only offers Satellite Internet access, you may experience playback issues due to fluctuation in download rates.
    • If your modem is not a modem/router combination and you want to take advantage of Sonos' automatic online updates, or stream music from an Internet-based music service, you must install a router in your home network. If you don't have a router, you will need to purchase and install one before setting up your system.
      • If you are going to use a Sonos controller application on an Android smartphone, iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, or other tablet, you may need a wireless router in your home network.
    • Connect at least one Sonos component to your home network router using an Ethernet cable, and then you can add other Sonos components wirelessly.
    • For best results, you should connect the computer or NAS drive that contains your personal music library collection to your home network router using an Ethernet cable.

Automatic Updates: The Connect:Amp supports free automatic software updates so you will always have the newest features and music services to enjoy. Simply register the Connect:Amp and Sonos will automatically notify you when software updates are available. By simply pressing one button your system updates itself.

    Connections

Speaker Outputs: The Connect:Amp has two pairs of spring-loaded binding posts, which can accept pin connectors, single banana plugs, and bare wire. The terminals cannot accept dual banana plugs or spade connectors. You can connect a pair of 4-ohm or 8-ohm speakers to the Connect:Amp.

2-Port Ethernet Switch: There are 2 female RJ-45 connectors for plugging in Category 5 Ethernet cables. You can connect a router, computer, or an additional network device, such as a network-attached storage (NAS) device. Specifications: 10/100 Mbps, auto MDI/MDIX.

Analog Input: You can connect an external source, such as a portable music player or a CD player, to the unit's left and right RCA jacks. The input jacks automatically detect a device is connected, and the source appears in the system. Music from the external source can be played in any zone. The volume is controlled by the Sonos Digital Music System, however, the playback (pause, music selection, etc.) must be controlled at the source.

Subwoofer Output: The Connect:Amp is equipped with a mono RCA subwoofer output, allowing you to connect the player to a powered subwoofer with an LFE or line level input. The system will detect when a cable is connected to the subwoofer output, and adjust the crossover frequency automatically.

    Connect:Amp Rocks

Written By Joe, Manassas, VA on Thursday, June 06, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wasn't convinced this would be powerful enough for four outside speakers but I was wrong! This little unit rocks two levels of speakers (Polk Atrium from Crutchfield) and is more than loud enough for gatherings in our large back yard or quiet background music while dining on our deck. The flexibility to select music from any number of sources makes this a winner. Thanks to the Crutchfield staff for recommending this item!
    Pros:
Easy set up, flexibility, size, appearance, power (55w). iPhone controller, fast shipping, bonus speakers included!
    Cons:
    Cost - but worth it!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've long admired Sonos, but now have my own. The Crutchfield team helped me decide on components and then gave me tech support when I had some minor difficulties (firewall related). The folks were available, easy to talk with and very courteous. My goods were shipped immediately and I had them in 3 days. The Sonos system itself is a gem and I am very pleased with it. I plan to add more components over time.
    Pros:
Simple install; great audio quality; system flexibility; Sonos app flexibility.
    Cons:
The firewall issue was surprising, especially given it was "name brand" software (not some off-beat stuff). Not a fault of Crutchfield or Sonos... just a bit of a pain for the hour it took to get through it (with help of both Crutchfield AND Sonos tech support).

Very easy to set up. Range is great, it reaches as far as your wireless network goes. Although a con is having only one speaker output, I used a Russond speaker selector to connect up to 3 speakers to it, and it had enough juice to power all three even in an outdoor location.
    Pros:
    Easy to set up
    Cons:
    Only one speaker output

    Easy setup, works great.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a full-house Sonos setup with four zones currently, including this unit feeding a set of outdoor speakers on my patio. (I have the unit itself in the basement, feeding speaker wires run through the foundation of the house to the patio.) The Sonos system as a whole works great. It is extremely easy to setup and operate, and gives you a wide variety of music sources to choose from in addition to your own digital music library. The sound from this unit is good, and the ability to control the volume independently from iPhone/iPad controller app is a definite plus given the outdoor location. The only thing keeping me from giving this a five-star rating is that the Sonos system as a whole cannot play digital music files above 44.1khz/16-bit resolution. If you plan on playing AAC or MP3 digital music files from iTunes, Amazon, etc., or CDs that you have ripped to your hard drive you will be fine. However, if you are interested in playing some of the 24-bit hi-resolution music that is available today, Sonos will not currently accomodate them.
    Pros:
Independent volume control, extremely easy setup and use, high quality of construction.
    Cons:
Does not play digital audio files above 44.1khz/16-bit

Sonos, High Tech , Easy to Use

Written By Butch, Simpsonville , SC on Sunday, December 30, 2012

Installed Sonos in my House in 2008, I want music in every room. To hard wire was costly and had to listen to same song in every room not unless installed multiple receivers also. Crutchfield told me about Sonos and how I could play different music in each room if I wanted not to mention having all my music on my computer. That was amazing to me since I have over 500g of music. Sonos and my iPhone let me play music instantly and find any song by track , artist, album, not to mention part of a name yes it's amazing. Oh also have Internet radio, Pandora is just one of the great music services to you can access. Truly the best and Sonos Tech support is better than Apples support and its free forever. Need I say more. Buy it you won't be disappointed.....

Bought one Sonos zone player 120. It came with complementary Polk speakers. Set-up and integration to my home wifi very painless and simple. Loading and set up of control panel ap to iPhone and iPad easy as well. From box to music: less than 30 min. It found all my iTunes music and i can choose and play music from the ap. Pandora set up and use easy too. Complementary speakers are nothing special but sound fine.
    Pros:
Amazingly easy to set up. Super cool to control music system from my iPhone. Love it
    Cons:
iPhone/ iPad interface on control ap needs more UX improvement, but it works.

    Not quite paradise.....

Written By BillH, Lakeland,FL on Monday, November 12, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First let me say that I have no intention of returning my ZonePlayer 120 amp. I'm not sure I could replace it with something that performs nearly as well as it does. But it has not been a painless installation, by far. If you have a large music collection, especially classical music, you may be in for disappointment. Although the player is supposed to support 65,000 songs it cannot handle even my 45,000 songs, because of the amount of metadata that my collection contains. Metadata is the information attached to a particular track (ie. artists, title, album, etc.). Classical music, especially opera, is very heavy on metadata and as a result the system cannot accept my entire collection. I was then diverted to the Amazon Cloudplayer for Sonos as a solution, but after nearly 2 weeks of tedious uploading (Amazon's product is error-ridden, unreliable, slow and confusing) my music still cannot be played or accessed. Sonos customer support is great, but it has been unable to come up with a solution, which it has been working on for 3 weeks. Nor does Sonos apparantly have any plans to increase its memory capacity because doing so will prevent the oldest Sonos systems (10 years old) from working with new equipment. It seems strange that a cutting edge company would limit its product capacity based on equipment that should probably be replaced in the first place. Can you imagine being locked into technology for 10 year old phones, TV's or computers? I hope a solution can be found.
    Pros:
Wonderful concept. Great for smaller collections that meets Sonos criteria. Awesome, knowledgeable technical support.
    Cons:
Large music collections be warned. Metadata limitations. Alternative solutions (Amazon Cloudplayer/Windows Mediaplayer) presented by Sonos are not currently adequate. Sonos technical solutions slow in coming. No "hard" fixes for current capacity issues.

I LOVE my Sonos whole house audio system!

Written By Callisto, Seabrook, Texas on Wednesday, October 17, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great whole house audio system. I had planned on buying a big receiver and speaker switch system. Crutchfield whole house audio guy asked me if "I was old"! He recommended the Sonos system paired with Cambridge speakers. What a wonderful system. I have 5 zones. It was easy to set up and the problems I did have getting my complete Itunes library to play were cleared up by a great customer service guy who actually called me at a prearranged time to trouble shoot the issues. The sound quality is fantastic, different music, in different rooms, at different volumes, all controlled with my iPhone and iPad! Absolutely fantastic!

CAN'T BELIEVE I HAVE LIVED W?OUT IT THIS LONG!

Written By Redskin_Patriot, Chesapeake, VA on Tuesday, October 16, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very easy to set up, download, and tie into my MAC Laptop, I-Pad, I-Phone 5, and Desktop... Anywhere in the house, I can turn the volume up, down, or change my music station. I now have XM, Pandora, and I-Tunes library all at the tip of my fingers and can control it anywhere in the house.

I just built my house and planned for 9 separate zones (wired with ceiling speakers installed). However, I like to have a few of the rooms on one zone so, after some creative re-arranging on my Sonos main page I can re-name the areas for my designated zones and now my wife can stream from our music library while I catch up on my Patriot Channel 125 talk radio while I'm in the garage.

No need for a bridge because CAT-5 is wired to every Sonos 120 zone player. No need for the remote because all my other computers can handle the controls.

This is a great system, but it is a little pricey for the simplicity of wireless amplified music. However, in the end it's exactly what I wanted.
    Pros:
All of the above - minus the cost.
    Cons:
    Cost - sorta....

    So Easy to Set Up

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Reluctant at first to spend the money on the Sonos system, however couldn't be happier. Sonos was a breeze to set up and have my entire library accessible and all zone controllers working within 15 minutes. Very pleased with the level of functionality of the Sonos system. Worth the money.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted to add music to my outside deck and I wasn't sure what I needed to accomplish the task. The audio system in my home is in the Family Room and is a floor away from the deck, so I didn't want to have to go inside the house every time I wanted to change a radio station or insert a different CD. I called Crutchfield and explained my situation and they pointed me to the Sonos ZP120. Well, I has turned out to be the perfect solution. I got bridge free and upgraded from the free speakers to the 5B65 Russound speakers and it really sounds great. I ripped all my Audio CDs to my PC and now I have access to any of my entire music library (or radio station) via the iPhone or Kindle Fire when I'm sitting on my deck. I plan on adding another ZP120 to power the speakers in my garage and possibly get the Sonos Play:3 to replace the AM/FM radio in my kitchen.
    Pros:
Easy setup. Compact and hides away neatly on a shelf. Sounds great.
    Cons:
Pricy, but worth it. Had a little trouble sharing my Music folder on my Vista PC, but Sonos support resolved the problem.
