What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Our take on the Kicker CompVR 07CVR122

by Dominic Devito

It's a tough job but somebody's got to do it. Kicker builds the CompVR round subwoofers to endure the the harsh demands of producing big bass. Each sub houses an injected-molded polypropylene cone and Santoprene™ rubber surround in a high-strength steel basket with plenty of interior venting. Kicker's SoloKon™ cone design looks fantastic while it protects against flexing that can wreck your sub and your sound.

The 07CVR122 12" sub boasts dual 2-ohm voice coils that can manage a heavy power onslaught, while adding more options for wiring up your system. UniPlate construction molds parts of the sub's motor structure together as a single unit to optimize heat transfer, improve accuracy, and extend cone excursion.

Kicker CompVR subs can be used for marine applications, so make some waves with these stellar subwoofers.

Team this sub with a Kicker amp and save
Take away the worry of picking the right amp to power this sub and keep it an all-Kicker package too. This Kicker bass package adds a Kicker DX500.1 mono sub amp and lets you save money in the bargain.

Note: If you are wiring this DVC sub for lower impedance, make sure that your amp is compatible. Most car amplifiers are stable down to 2 ohms in standard mode, or 4 ohms in bridged operation.

Highlights:

  • 12" subwoofer with dual 2-ohm voice coils
  • injection-molded polypropylene cone
  • ribbed Santoprene rubber surround

Features
Enclosure Compatibility

Features

Dual Voice Coils: For increased system flexibility, the woofer has two 2 ohm voice coils. When the voice coils are wired in parallel, the woofer presents a 1 ohm load. When the voice coils are wired in series, the woofer presents a 4 ohm load. In addition, each coil may be connected to a different amplifier channel and each channel will see a 2 ohm load.

Cone Materials: The cone was developed using Kicker's SoloKon technology. The ultra high performance injection molded polypropylene cone remains rigid and minimizes cone flex, lowering harmonic distortion. Distortion in the cone is further reduced with new back bracing.

Surround: The optimized ribbed Santoprene surround allows extended cone excursion for additional bass output and higher SPL. The surround is double-stitched to the cone to add a mechanical fastener to the chemical adhesives. This prevents the cone and surround from separating in the harshest conditions.

Enhanced BAM (Basket And Motor) Assembly: The high-strength steel basket features a low-profile open design, and provides a solid foundation for the precision-aligned motor assembly. Perimeter venting in the BAM relieves pressure from under the spider, supports a linear excursion, and helps dissipate heat from the voice coil and motor structure.

UniPlate Construction: The woofer features a one-piece UniPlate construction with a vented hyper-extended pole piece and backplate. This unique design provides the following benefits:

  • Optimizes heat transfer efficiency for cooler operation and maximum power handling ability
  • Eliminates erratic magnetic flux from the voice coil gap
  • Releases pressure under the suspension for uniform cone movement and responsive low bass
  • Prevents the voice coil from bottoming out and corresponding damage

Tinsel Leads: The woofer features sleeved high-power tinsel lead wires to resist breakage and power-robbing resistance losses. The lead wires are terminated with polymer-based strain relieving mechanical fasteners.

Speaker Terminals: The spring loaded, nickel-plated terminals provide solid connections for speaker wire up to 8 gauge. Single banana plugs and pin connectors will also fit.

Break-in Period: Due to the complex nature of Kicker Comp VR speakers, they require a break-in period in order to produce optimum low-bass response. The high-performance suspension system makes the speaker very stiff out-of-the-box. Approximately 2 weeks of daily playing will allow the suspension to break-in and reach its optimum equilibrium. A broken-in subwoofer will exhibit stronger bass performance, smoother response, and greater low-bass extension.

Rubber Magnet Boot: A black rubber boot covers the outside edge of the magnet structure to improve the cosmetics of the woofer and protect the magnet during installation.

Marine Ready: This woofer is made with a powder coated, weather resistant basket and stainless steel hardware, so it can be used in marine and mobile applications.

Enclosure Compatibility

Power Handling: The power handling specifications differ according to the type and size of the enclosure. The power handling specifications assume that both voice coils are in use. Note: Both voice coils in a dual voice coil speaker should always be connected.

Recommended Sealed Box Volume:

  • Compact (minimum enclosure volume): 1 cu/ft; the woofer can handle up to 400 watts RMS (200 watts per voice coil)
  • SQ (maximum enclosure volume): 4.6 cu/ft; the woofer can handle up to 300 watts RMS (150 watts per voice coil)

Recommended Vented Box Volume:

  • Compact: 1.75 cu/ft; 2.5" x 12.5" port opening; 20" port depth; the woofer can handle up to 300 watts RMS (150 watts per voice coil)
  • SPL/Deep Bass: 2.25 cu/ft; 3" x 12.5" port opening; 20.5" port depth; the woofer can handle up to 300 watts RMS (150 watts per voice coil)

Note: The power handling specifications listed with the vented enclosure recommendations apply only when a 25Hz, 24dB/octave subsonic filter (sold separately) is used with this woofer. If a subsonic filter is not used, power handling may decrease, excessive port noise can occur, and the life of the woofer may be shortened.

Great sub, blew 2 months out of warranty

Written By Ryan, Herndon, VA on Saturday, December 29, 2012

This sub does indeed "kick." Great sound overall before tweaking it, perfect sound after some adjustments on the amp. I had 500W mono amp attached to this in a custom built box. I've owned it for just over a year and it died last week. It was great while it lasted but the ground wire fired on the speaker and caused quite a mess in my trunk.
Pros:
Great sound
Cons:
Blew just outside of warranty.

Kicker Lives Up To the Hype

Written By JgP, Hattiesburg, MS on Thursday, January 19, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

CompVR 12's was my first Kicker purchase. I've owned MTX subs which perform well bit lack the impact the Kickers provide. Great buy! Everyone is impressed by them. They provide supreme bass in my ported enclosure. They set off car alarms with the sub setting on my head unit about 1/2 its maximum.
Pros:
Great impact. Pick up all low frequencies well
Cons:
None so far.

I recommend these kickers to my friends, family, and ANYONE interested in getting a subwoofer. Thumbs up KICKER! I am not really into stickers, but I will be proudly slapping the kicker sticker that my subs came with on my car! Dont waste your time add these to the cart and 'check out'
Pros:
These kickers are LOUD! They can hit the lows my kenwoods missed and my music sounds alot better now! Speaking of that the sound quality is great! I am so glad Pete pointed these out to me. instead of replacing ANOTHER kenwood (two total)
Cons:
The instruction manual is in black and white. No biggie. But reading a black and white wire diagram with black and white wires and the picture of the sub. Just not a great idea.

AMP/WIRING/SPEAKER. I have it in a 1999 chevy 1 ton crew cab. It produce
everybit of sound that I needed. from rock/metal/rap/blues etc.... it hits all of the
generes.. I will Say that you can only go to 8" inch min. on your box to be built.
Anything else and it wont have enough space to fit and produce a good sound..

Awesome so far

Written By JayG, Charleston, SC on Thursday, April 07, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great subs so far, still breaking them in(so annoying, but necessary). I've played
them for about 6-7 hours now and set at a gain of 3 out of 11 on my kicker 300.1
amp and my headunit sub level at +1 or +3, depending on the day, they're still
surprisingly loud. Great low end bass. Lol I'm genuinely excited to fully break
them in and turn em up. As always, crutchfield is where I buy all of my car audio
equipment, fast, courteous and with great customer service, my subs were to me
within 2 days. I highly recommend these

Comp vr 12 are the best

Written By Jasper, atascadero ca on Saturday, October 09, 2010

so i got this sub last year and it blows apart the competition. i am running a Kenwood 910 d 1800 watt amp and a single kicker in a ported box and oh my gosh it hits so hard. there is no distortion or bottoming out. it makes music out side of my car sound so lame and lifeless. this sub is so loud it literally makes my throat and inside of my ear drums vibrate.

if you want a sub that wont break and can beat anyone else buy a kicker! end of story.

Kicker CompVR 07CVR122

Written By alex, Quincy, MI on Friday, May 14, 2010

Bought this sub to replace my 2 Rockford Fosgate P1S415. It fits in less than 1/4 of those 2 and on its own in a closed box with a profile AP 1000 California series powering it hits clean and Blows my 15s out of the water.

P.S. I love having the DVC to get it to 2 ohms resistance.

Kicker CompVR 07CVR122

Written By Corey, Michigan on Thursday, January 14, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My friend has at least 2 grand in his stereo and these hit the same as his. I am running them from a refurbished t5002 from Crutchfield and I've seen several birthsheets for those amps and they are double what they're rated for. Making them almost 2,000 watts peak. And I believe it. These subs are bridged and wired to a 2 ohm load. I have them in a Marquis and you can feel it all through out your body when they hit. They are very very impressive and never get warm or distort. I have 1/0 awg wire in my system (150 amp fuse) and am using 18 awg speaker wire and a sealed box. I do need to get a new battery that holds more reserved power though, because when they hit, you can see it in my headlights (depending on the song). But be careful when wiring them because the way kicker has their terminals spread out (which I like alot but you have to pay attention)can be confusing. Overall, they are amazing subs and I'm very impressed. .

Awesome Bass Response!!!

Written By Stanky1219, Tampa,Fl. on Sunday, November 15, 2009

Well I picked these up for one reason......the kicker name and the fact that they are buy one get one free. I was amazed at the response they have. I have 2 of them in a 3.5cu.ft. Slot-ported enclosure and run them with a kicker zx750.1 in a 1994 taurus. THE TRUNK LIFTS OFF OF THE SEALS!!!! THE SUNROOF AND ROOF FLEX !! So they are loud but......they are also very clean sounding which was unexpected. Great Bass On A Budget. BUY THEM NOW!!!!! LOL.
