Why would I need an iPodĀ® adapter?

An iPod adapter allows you to connect your iPod to your car stereo, then access your playlists with your stereo's controls - a great idea for several reasons. One, you can scroll through your song titles on your stereo's larger display, instead of squinting down at your iPod. Two, you can route the adapter cable to your glove compartment or center console, so your iPod stays safely out of sight. Three, the iPod adapter keeps your iPod fully charged, so it's ready to rock when you leave your car. And last of all, some adapters bypass your iPod's internal digital-to-analog converter, using your stereo's superior DAC to turn your files back into music.

Our take on the USA Spec iPod® Interface for Toyota, Scion, Lexus, and Isuzu

by Zak Billmeier

Just because you have the factory radio in your car doesn't mean you have to leave your iPod at home. Install USA Spec's iPod interface and listen to your favorite tunes through your car's speakers. You can control song selection, and up to five different playlists right from the radio, including shuffle mode. The interface also charges your iPod while it's connected. And with your iPhone® connected, you can even stream music from popular Internet services like PANDORA®, Livio Radio, iHeartRadio, and more.

Please enter your vehicle information or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to find out if this adapter is compatible with your vehicle. The iPod interface uses the CD changer port, so any existing changer that you have must be disconnected.

Compatibility Note: Be sure to check "Hands-on Research" for specific iPod model compatibility with this iPod adapter.

    Features

Overview: This interface connects a compatible iPod/iPhone to select 1997-2013 Toyota, Lexus, Scion, and Isuzu audio systems. Its on-board software translates commands from your factory radio's CD-changer controls into commands the iPod/iPhone understands. This interface allows you to retain CD changer, Rear Seat Entertainment/DVD, and Satellite Radio - while providing the following iPod/iPhone functions through your vehicle's factory radio:

    • Directs the iPod/iPhones's audio output to your vehicle's audio system for optimal sound quality playback.
    • Supports your iPhone's audio streaming apps, such as Pandora, Livio, iHeart Radio, SiriusXM & more (in Direct mode only).
    • Controls the iPod/iPhone via vehicle's radio and steering wheel controls (when applicable).
    • Charges the iPod/iPhone's internal battery, and charging stops automatically at one hour after the iPod is paused. The iPod/iPhone goes into sleep mode when charging stops.

Specific Features: The PA15-TOY displays song title and artist information on all radios with a "Text" button. The PA15-TOY allows connection through the XM/CDC port.

Vehicle Compatibility: Please consult the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to see if your vehicle is compatible.

iPod Compatibility: The PA15-TOY is "Made for iPod/iPhone" compatible and supports the following iPod/iPhone model features when connected to a compatible Toyota, Lexus, Scion, or Isuzu factory radio (as of 10/11/2012):

    Notes:

    • *The iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), and iPhone 5 will require the Apple Lightning to 30-pin adapter (sold separately).
    • Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

Operation Modes: The iPod/iPhone interface adapter features the following modes of operation:

    • Playlist Mode: You can create up to 6 favorite mobile playlist then use your radio's CD changer controls to access and control your playlist.
    • Direct Mode: Gives you complete control of your iPod/iPhone while it is connected to the factory radio. Your iPod is not locked out while connected to the radio and you are able to manually access your complete iPod/iPhone content. The Radio still can adjust song up/down random or shuffle play, but you can manually control your iPod/iPhone & select any playlist, genre or Artist of your choice. (Disk 8 is dedicated to Direct Mode use).
    • Hybrid Mode: Combines features of Direct Mode and Playlist Mode. You can create and access your favorite mobile playlist or directly access all your iPod content manually on your iPod. Your iPod displays song title information and iPod is not locked, so the iPod can be operated manually at all times. (Some iPods may not work in the Hybrid mode.)

App Streaming (in Direct Mode): Direct mode also lets you listen to the sound from your iPhone's downloaded music apps (such as Pandora, iHeart Radio, SiriusXM, etc.) through your factory head unit & speakers. You will continue to control your iPhone's apps & view song/artist information from its touchscreen.

Note: Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. You will also need applicable music service accounts.

Manual Correction: Although the current manual details a third operation mode, Hybrid Mode, the PA15-TOY does not offer this feature. Hybrid Mode was removed to improve operational consistency.

iPod Text: Pressing the TEXT button on your factory radio while your iPod/iPhone plays in the Playlist mode, allows the artist name and song title to be displayed on your factory radio. The Artist name is displayed at the first time press of the TEXT button and song title is displayed at the second time press of the TEXT button. The Playlist disc number and track number will be displayed at the third time press of the TEXT button.

Note: Track search by artist, song title or album are not supported. Some radios do not have the TEXT button feature.

iPod Playback: All audio tracks on the iPod/iPhone will be played with text display at Disc 7 in Direct Mode, or Disc 8 without text display. The track order is determined by the default order on the iPod. Selecting discs 1 through 6 on the factory radio will allow playback of 6 playlists on the iPod/iPhone. You can select a playlist by pressing the Disc Up or Disc Down buttons. Playlists which are created for direct access must be designated with the word "TOYOTA" and the disc number. If no "TOYOTA" playlists are designated, the first six playlists on the iPod/iPhone are accessible from the Disc 1 through Disc 6 buttons.

Auxiliary Input: In addition to the iPod/iPhone input on the PA15-TOY there is an auxiliary input (stereo RCA) for use with another source, such as a DVD system, satellite radio, or game system. The aux input is selected at CD 9 Track 1 using the factory radio controls. This aux input can be used with or without the iPod/iPhone connected. To use the auxiliary input on the interface, dip switch #1 must be set to the "On" position.

Controls: The factory radio's controls give you access to the following iPod/iPhone functions:

    • Scan: plays first 10 seconds of each track in the current playlist (if scan is pressed at Disc 7, it will play all songs in the iPod/iPhone for 10 seconds each)
    • Random (Shuffle): songs in the current playlist are played back in random order (some radios have a "P scan" button for this function)
    • Track Up/Down: the "Next" button advances to the next track in the playlist; the "Prev" button allows you to jump to the beginning of the currently playing song
    • Fast Track Search: the "Fwd" or "Rev" button will advance or retreat through the tracks in increments of 10 (i.e. 04, 14, 24...)

Note: Repeat play is not supported by this interface. Switching to another source, such as AM/FM, CD, or Cassette, puts the iPod/iPhone into pause mode.

    In love (again)

Written By 4Runner Chick, Dinwiddie, VA on Thursday, March 28, 2013

I love this SO much that when I totaled my 2000 4Runner, which I had this installled in, and got my 2005 4Runner this was literally the FIRST thing I purchased for my "new" 4Runner. I love the fact that I can still use my controls on my stering wheel with this product. I wll say it was a little trickier to find how I was going to run it in the 05 4Runner, becuase in my 2000 I just ran the cord up through where my e-brake was so I didn't have to put holes any where. In my 05 I ended up drilling a hole in where the ash tray thing is with the cig lighter jack, but I like it because now I can tuck it away out of sight. Also I will say the dash in the 05 is more of a pain to take out...but that's a Toyota thing! Literally the BEST thing you can do for your Toyota factory stero trust me like I said I have bought 2 of these for my 2 Toyotas. Oh and need I mention my mom was so jealous she got one for 98 4Runner and yes she is just a pleased!
    Pros:
I can use my Ipod with my factory stero and it works with my stering wheel controls. Clarity is great, just like listening to your Ipod with head phones or the regular radio.
    Cons:
    NONE!

I was needing an iPod/iPhone interface for my factory radio in my 2006 Toyota Tacoma. It was very simple to install. The hardest part was routing the cables to the center console. It works great and I am very please with it.

USA Spec iPod Interface for 2004 Toyota 4Runner.

Written By Rob, Herndon, VA on Monday, July 23, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Thank you to Crutchfield Advisor- Niles. Purchasing an iPod adapter for my 2004 4Runner w/ Nav. system solved my problem, save me a huge money and I think the devise is far better than the CD player. Best buy ever.
    Pros:
Installations not bad , excellent clear sound quality. Full control of iPod from the head unit and steering wheel buttons. No need to expose my iPod Classic all I did is hide it inside the glove compartment while listening to my favorite music which I missed for so long.
    Cons:
For saving me a BIG BUCKS it is a NO.

iPod adapter for 2004 Lexus RX330

Written By John H, Gilroy, CA on Monday, June 04, 2012
    Installed in a 2004 Lexus RX330

This was a quick and easy installation once I saw a YouTube video on how to get the radio out of the dash. A 10mm socket removed the 4 screws holding the radio in place and a plastic spatula acted as a prybar to remove the snap-in, plactic bezels. The adapter cable that came with the interface snapped into the CD changer socket on the back of the OEM radio. The hardest part of the job was routing the cable to a convenient location.
    Pros:
Everything was included in the kit. The wiring diagram was simple and easy to understand.
    Cons:
It would have been nice to have a link on hte Crutchfield web site showing how to remove the radio. As it was, that research took about as much time as the installation.

    Almost perfect...

Installed in a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this for my 2007 FJ Cruiser. The install was very simple. And the sound quality is great. But I really wanted more control over the iPod than what the unit offers. In my truck tricks the head unit into treating it like another CD changer, and looks for my playlists first. But if I just go to CD 7 (I believe), it will allow me to fully control the iPod through the head unit...but since it acts like a CD, it will go through the first 99 tracks. So to really get full access to my music, I have to put it in 'iPod Direct' mode (CD 8). Which is kind of a pain, because I originally bought the unit so that I could keep my iPod out of sight, and only take it out of the truck to update my music library. So now I am trying to figure out a discreet way to mount my iPod where it is out of sight, but still accessible.
    Pros:
    Easy install, great sound
    Cons:
Doesn't give you full control of iPod when it 'tricks' the head unit into thinking it is another CD. So I still have to keep my iPod within reach rather than tucked away.

I love this product (and the company). I have spent several hundreds on FM transmitters over the life of my 4 iPod. I honeslty have bought at lest 6 different models and brand all to be disappointed. Finally I came across the PA15-TOY and decided why not I have tried everything else. It was so easy to install. Honeslty I had it done in less than an hour. It is amazing. The sound quality is great, no more searching for clear stations, charges my iPod and it works with so many different iPod models. I also like the fact that with this product I get to keep my CD player (not that I ever use it, but it is nice to have). I wish I would have save time, money and hassel and pruchased this YEARS AGO. It's a MUST HAVE!
    Pros:
    EVERYTHING!
    Cons:
    Honestly nothing!

Finally direct iPod hookup for my Avalon!

Written By Anonymous, Camilla, GA on Monday, February 13, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was glad to finally have a direct iPod hookup for my Toyota Avalon. Sound quality was very good. I also loved that this adapter had an option for an RCA/Aux. output which worked great for my Pioneer Inno XM receiver. My only gripe with this piece is the lack of a scroll by artist with the factory controls. You can only scroll through playlists and by song. Easily circumvented by using the direct iPod controls though.
    Pros:
Great sound quality. RCA/Aux. output for other devices
    Cons:
No artist scroll through radio controls

    Great Product!

Written By Hoss, Oldsmar, FL on Wednesday, December 28, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Crutchfield sales associate was very helpful and patient on the phone in walking me through the options in making my son's truck radio compatible with an i-Pod or non-iPod portable devices. He recommended this USA Spec iPod and the Scosche RCA cable. Even though I placed my order a week before Christmas, it arrived timely without a delivery charge. I could not be happier with the service or the product.
    Pros:
This iPod interface was a breeze to install on my son's 2006 Toyota Tacoma, with the help of step-by step instructions from a thread on Toyota Tacoma forum which included photos regarding removing the radio so you can access the CD port in the back. If you plan on using a device other than an i-anything, be sure to get the Scosche I6RCA35A RCA cable. The sound is great!
    Cons:
Nothing. It works like a charm.

Installed in a 1998 Toyota Sienna
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was a super easy install. The Crutchfield instructions were spot on. The only thing that took any effort at all was to find a place to actually fit the unit behind the dash so it would not rattle around. I just ran the iPod cable into the flip out CD tray below the radio. Its a great way to keep an iPod out of sight.

I did have to change the settings on the little switches on the side. The instructions mentioned that I might have to try different options. The basic settings did play, but the built in radio controls did not change tracks. I tried the "B" settings in the instructions and that worked perfectly.
    Pros:
This worked really well in our 1998 Toyota Sienna. The controls and playlists work fine. Installation was very easy. Sound is way better than the cassette adapters that we used to use. I never thought we would get an iPod interface that worked this well on a 13 year old car! It charges new iPhone 4s.
    Cons:
There seems to be a bit of hiss when nothing is playing, more than I would have expected. But its not noticeable over normal background noise while driving, and I really cannot tell its there when there is actually music playing.

    Perfect product

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So I was told I needed an adapter cable that goes between my factory NAV and the stereo so I ordered that with the unit. No bass, tinny sound. USA Spec thought their unit was defective so Crutchfield sent out a replacement unit and interface. No luck. Joe @ USA Spec asked if their was a jack on the back of the radio to plug the cable in directly without the CAS-LEX cable and sure enough there was. Perfect. My Sirius radio now plugs in directly, this little gem is velcro'd inside my glove box and I just have to push the CD button twice to access it. The factory sound system is now the limiting factor on sound quality and the cassette adapter is now in a landfill somewhere. Great product, great support.
    Pros:
Other than getting to the back my IS300's radio this product is stupid simple to install and use.
    Cons:
Didn't work the first two times but Joe at USA Spec's tech support is a genius.
