Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Sony CDX-GT565UP

by Zak Billmeier

Bring your PANDORA® Internet radio stations in the car with Sony's CDX-GT565UP CD receiver. Just plug in your iPhone to the front-panel USB slot, and you can control PANDORA® like you do any other source — including "thumbs up" and "thumbs down."

Set your display to match your music
Sony's Dynamic Color Illuminator lets you customize the color of your display to match your car's interior. And if you're feeling really groovy, you can activate the Sound Synchronization feature which times the color change to match your music.

Ready for satellite radio
You'll find a direct connection to SiriusXM's XM tuner, which lets you pause and rewind live broadcasts, plus see alerts when your favorite team or artist is playing on another channel.

Dial in great sound
The receiver's EQ7's 7-band equalizer gives you lots of options for getting the sound just right in your car. Sony's DM+ Advanced circuitry restores the details that are lost when you compress your digital music, so you enjoy the best possible sound from your MP3, WMA, or AAC files. And if you're craving a perfect stereo sweet spot, you'll be able to dial it in with the Listening Position feature.

Dive into your iPod's music library
If you're going to use your iPod® in the car, you'll appreciate how seamlessly it works with this receiver. Sony's Quick BrowZer lets you search for a song by genre, artist, or album — just rotate the knob to find the song you want, then push to select. If you've got lots of songs on your iPod, the Jump control leaps through them in 10% increments, while ZAPPIN™ plays short clips of your music files until you hear the song that suits your mood.

Thinking of adding on?
When you're ready to expand your system you'll find two sets of preamp outputs for adding external amplifiers or a powered subwoofer. You can use the built-in high- and low-pass filters to trim the signal going to your speakers and subs so you get maximum efficiency from your system.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Sony stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and this Sony, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

      • Listening Position: This unit can change the localization of sound by delaying the sound output from each speaker to suit your position, and simulate a natural sound field with the feeling of being in the center of it wherever you sit in the car. You can choose from Front Right, Front Left, Front Center, or Off. You can also set the subwoofer distance of the subwoofer to Near, Normal, or Far
      • RBE (Rear Bass Enhancer): RBE enhances the bass sound by applying the low-pass filter setting to the rear speakers. This function allows the rear speakers to work as a subwoofer even if there is no subwoofer connected.
      • Dynamic Loudness: Dynamic Loudness refers to compensating for volume level & signal gain.
      • DM+ Advanced: DM+ Advanced improves digitally compressed sound by restoring high frequencies lost in the compression process (works only for USB).

Automatic Level Optimizer: Automatic Level Optimizer analyzes each track's playback level & adjusts the output level to optimize transitions between tracks & sources.

Beep Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

      Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The head unit comes supplied with an IR wireless remote control (RM-X211) for easy operation. The included wireless remote allows you to control the basic functions of the Sony head unit while keeping your eyes on the road.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

      Awesome value

      Installed in a 1984 Mercedes-Benz 300CD-T
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got this unit to complement the new Polk db501 and db351 speakers I put in my 84 mbz 300cd, and it makes SUCH a difference! I installed the speakers first, and while they were an improvement, there was still a ton of distortion and virtually no base when played with my original factory head unit. After popping this head unit in everything is way way more crisp and defined, and I can actually get some bass out of my speakers now! Definitely worth the money, easy installation (as long as you follow the directions properly). The wiring harness made installation even easier, and allowed me to keep my factory plugs intact for an easy switch back if I ever want. It also looks very clean and matches my car well, not gaudy like some of the head units out there. The only negative i can really see with this is there are a ton of bass control options in the sound control dept, but there is no treble-only control available, only preset configurations that manipulate the highs. Not a huge deal but a little annoying.
      Pros:
-great sound -clean look -easy installation -decent price -quality construction
      Cons:
-controls can be hard to reach when you are driving, some buttons a little small and hard to hit accurately if your not staring at it -lack of treble control

I was looking for a replacement unit and found this Sony product to be top notch. easy to navigate once you get used to it. sound is aok, Would recommend this to a friend if they were looking to upgrade their radio too.
      Pros:
This radio has all the bells and whistles to satisfy you. pandora, usb port, etc....
      Cons:
Lousy A.M. reception compared to factory radio. You can't beat a factory unit for reception. Selectivity not there. engineering went for everything else.

Overall great system, I installed it with ease on a '01 F-150 looks great and sounds great with factory speakers. The system works as expected. It does take some time to get used to the functions for sound quality and adjustment. I also have not used the ubs that much yet so I do not know how complicated that will be.
      Pros:
It looks good in the car and sounds good. I am still adjusting the sound to my liking. The ability to use a ipod or ipad for music was the main reason to get this unit. I will enjoy using an ipod for my music in the future
      Cons:
The i.d. on the buttons are small and hard to see at a glance.

Easy to use with some time, but basic functions are intuitive. Made back speakers in a 2006 jeep Wrangler "come alive". Great EQ control.

      Great value, impressive feature set

Written By Jake, Norcross, GA on Friday, June 22, 2012
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

      - Impressive features for the price. Pandora control! 7 band EQ! Remote control! Variable color display! The list goes on and on. Clearly, a great choice at this price. BTW, I highly recommend the Crutchfield outlet deals, either that or look for a coupon code.

      - I bought this for my wife's car and she approves. I chose this unit because it has so many of the features I wanted at a price I am happy with. But, along with features comes the learning curve. It takes some practice to set up every one of the options. You will need the manual to remember what some of those menus are for. Not the most intuitive head unit. But there are several different ways to configure your system with this receiver, and that is a huge plus. It's very flexible. Make sure you read the manual to understand your options.

      - Upgrading from the factory, single-DIN 2001 CD player, sound quality is a major improvement. I already had some basic Kicker coaxial speakers in the car, but this Sony CD receiver made the bigger difference.

      - My build quality nit-pick is that the speaker outputs on the wire harness were such a tiny gauge that I had trouble stripping the wire without cutting one or two strands off. It seemed to be less than 20 gauge wire, but the setting for 22 gauge on my wire strippers was cutting a little too much. Maybe my fault, but it was frustrating. Sony seems to have skimped on the wire harness.
      Pros:
Pandora and iPod control, variable color display with lots of color scheme options, 7 band EQ, wireless remote, front USB AND Aux inputs, flexible output configuration, high-pass and low-pass filters with 3 different slope figures, sound quality improvement over a weak factory stereo, listening position settings, installation kit included from Crutchfield, (worked perfectly).
      Cons:
Some menus and operations can be a little confusing, skimpy wire harness, no face-plate case, no Bluetooth, no HD radio.

      Disappointed

Installed in a 2001 Toyota Camry
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We were happy with the factory radio, marked Toyota 16814 (front), other than its lack of iPod support. Requirements for the replacement included a well-tracking CD player (and no dropping of the front panel to use it), a great analog radio section with actual physical preset buttons, and great iPod support.

Sorta got the last one. :-(

Crutchfield recommended the Pioneer DEH-4400HD. Problem with that model is its serious volume knob issue (see its reviews). That, the horribly bad manual, and learning that Super Tuner has for years been an ad slogan instead of reality led me to drop it and go with the next best: the CDX-GT565UP.

I would have been OK paying a couple hundred $ more to get a truly good tuner and/or CD player mechanism. But more money only buys more Features that we do not want nor need: BT, nav, video, etc. Research made clear that *not enough people care about great radio nor CD any more*: there isn't a great FM section anywhere in anyone's lineup.

I'm a former "stereo" repair tech (repaired over 1100 CD players). I've amassed a collection of **extremely** difficult to play/track manufactured audio CDs and test CDs. The factory player tracks extremely well, as one would expect for a 2001-vintage CD player. The Sony tracks like a so-so mid-1980s player. Just 9 years ago, one could go to any discount store and buy a $10 portable CD player which would run circles around this one in tracking ability. As co-inventor of the CD format, Sony should be ashame
      Pros:
The display is good and so far we're not having trouble seeing it in bright sunlight. The colors are fun, but personally i'd rather have a better tuner and/or CD player. Has RDS and can play CD-RWs (not that we care about this), unlike the factory radio. Sound quality is fine: no better nor worse than the factory radio over the factory speakers. iPod functionality is so-so on the Sony and great in "passenger mode" on the iPod itself. AAC for flash drive files Dims with dash lights
      Cons:
Mediocre tuner section no good for weak FM stations, lousy CD player tracking on defective discs. Quantitatively, measured mono sensitivity of our Sony is 2.5 dB worse than the factory radio. Qualitatively, the FM on the Sony "picket fences" much more than the factory radio when listening to low-powered "college" music stations. Absolute range didn't seem that different, but *listenable* range sure was! The factory radio is vastly superior at variably blending to mono to minimize noise.
