Overview

Overview: The overall response of your audio system will be enhanced with the use of capacitors due to their ability to store a large amount of current and discharge it quickly to supplement your amplifier's power supply during high current demand (bass note). The Tsunami capacitor is a logical addition to your system due to the fact that automotive batteries aren't designed to deliver the current to satisfy the requirements of high powered audio components. It can also filter AC voltage induced in the system by the amplifier's power supply which could cause objectionable noise. One Farad of capacitance is recommended for each 1,000 watts of amplifier power, but you can never have too much capacitance for any system.

Features

Display: There is a digital charge level indicator display. The digital display shows your precise voltage in 0.1 volt steps.

Flashing LEDs: There are eight blue LEDs that pulse with the charge/discharge cycles.

Audible Voltage Warning: If the voltage drops below 10 volts or rises above 17.5 volts the capacitor emits an audible alarm.

Installation

Installation: On the top of the capacitor there are two screw terminals, one positive and one negative. The positive terminal  is connected to the battery (and fused at the battery) and to the positive input on the amp. The negative is grounded to the car's chassis. Ring terminals with minimum inner diameter of 0.244" (6.2mm) should be used to connect all the wires.

Charging Bulb: The capacitor comes with a charging bulb to assist you in initally charging the capacitor.

capacitor comes with a charging bulb built into the top of the capacitor to assist you in initially charging the capacitor. A separate charging bulb is also included in the package.

Specifications

Specifications:

  • Capacitance: 1.2 Farad
  • Maximum Operating DC Voltage: 24 volt/30 volt surge
  • ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance): < 0.002 ohm

Solid product for the cost

Solid product, easy install. Make sure you have a fuse right before your cap along with right before your battery just for safety measures. If you need to discharge the cap, get a 1 Ohm resister. that should do the trick, but definitely check it with a multi-meter before handling the terminals

Amp: 800 watt.
the cap is rated for 1.2 fared, so if you're running an 800 watt or less total power consumption of your amps, this cap is great for what you need.

Another note, the blue charging LED's look like blue police lights at night. If you are worried about the lights, just cover the acrylic top with something and you don't have to worry about it

A capacitor is necessary for any amplifer set-up

I installed an Alpine MRP-450 amp, running a Kicker 12" Compvt. Enclosed Sub. (2 ohm load), along with an excellent sounding 50 X 2 amp, powering a set of Infinity Ref. 6 3/4 with a set of Ref. tweeters. (Also a 2 ohm load) I believe that having a capacitor is necessary for any set-up, especially if your running a lot of power like I am. I have all that, along with a Kenwood head unit running a set of Boston Acoustics 4 X 6's and another set of Ref. tweeters, (which aren't wired to the cap.) in a regular cab S-10; it's insanely loud AND clear. There's no strain whatsoever on the cars power system; the voltmeter hasn't changed habits at all since the installation. The capacitor could probably do without the blue LED's lighting up EVERY time there's some extra power saved up being used. (At night, until I got used to it, I thought there was a police car behind me) But, if I ever need the low or high warning, it's nice to have. If you only run one amp., even a small one, I'd recommend a capacitor. Any amp. is going to tax your cars electrical system, the capacitor makes the sound cleaner and it's cheaper and easier to install than a battery, alternator or figuring out what might be wrong with your elec. system. My electrical sys. is all new, so I might as well keep it working well. I'd recommend the 5 farad cap.; it's actually smaller than the 1.2, according to the technician. Excellent product, should be a standard part of any installation.

Works great. Down-loadable owners manual out of date. No included
charge or discharge apparatus. Charge is now built into the unit. Connect
battery cable without the sound system on and unit charges by itself. It is
in the new instructions.

Tsunami LITEWAVE Series PP912UM-CAP

Written By Daniel, Montgomery, AL on Friday, April 13, 2007

I must admit before I was skeptical about installing a capacitor and wondered if it would actually do anything for me. But Tsunami has really impressed me, no need for a potentially dangerous 'charge' like other capacitors, it just automatically did so when I applied power. This is how it works-

once powered it will charge from your car's battery in about 5-10 seconds. during this period the pretty blue leds around the top will blink indicating that the cap is charging or later indicate draining.
it will reach full charge and show a status of the voltage not of just itself but of the whole system (bat + cap)
turn up your sound system and crank the bass and the LEDs will go from a steady 'on' to blinking when the cap is being used for its intended purpose.
whenever the car is turned on or power is applied or changed in the system the cap will turn on showing a voltage status, this might get annoying to some people but to me it just let me know it's doing it's job. (for me when i use my key remote to lock the doors the cap will light up)
it will only stay lit for 60 seconds once it's initially used then turn off to conserve power.
I have not tested it yet but I think it's alarm will sound if there is a stress on the system and your car's battery is dying, infact it appears to help prevent the battery from draining.
to make a long story short, my lights no longer dim! really thats the most you can expect from a cap but the overall package of this cap is really well executed! bravo Tsunami!

There's alot of talk about whether or not adding a cap to your system really makes any difference. I wasn't sure myself before I purchased this one, but I decided to take a chance and I can't tell you how glad I am that I did. I recently moved my 300W(rms) 10" sub & amp to my new '05 Civic and noticed that it wasn't hitting as hard as it used too. I had a feeling it was because the amp was not getting the same power now because of the smaller battery and alternator. I was right! After adding this cap, not only do my headlights not dim at all now, but I've had to cut the bass to my sub by half and will now have to buy an amp for the other speakers to even them up to what this sub is doing now. If you want power from a small import car, YOU NEED THIS! The resistor isn't included with the cap, but I bought a 10ohm resistor just to be on the safe side @ the initial charge. The cap will discharge in a few seconds and shut off when it reaches your battery's voltage (~12.1V), so it will not kill your battery (first reviewer must have had a bad one or hooked up wrong). This cap almost doubled my amp's power and thats no lie! If your running 500 or more RMS I'd recommend a little more capacitance, but for me this was the perfect addition. I have more bass now from one 10 than I'll ever need and bookoo trunk space to boot!
P.S. I think you could get away with the initial charge without the resistor, just make sure everything's well grounded.

I never used a cap before, but decided to use one because I went with a larger amp and subs for my new system, and in my last car I went through two alternators, and they are a pain to replace in a Neon.

I first hooked it up without the cap to make sure it all worked before I hooked everything up, and you could definitely tell a difference in volume and sound quality after the cap was installed, and I'm running 2 12's with only a 325w Rockford amp. For the price I think it is definitely worth it especially for the strain it takes off your electrical system.

I glanced over some of the other reviews. I don't understand what they meant about no documentation for installation. It comes with a pretty easy to follow wiring diagram and short instructions. I didn't use a resistor, just took the fuse out of my amp wire, hooked up the cap, started the car, put the fuse back in and let it charge. It took about 10 seconds to charge. Worked fine and couldn't have been easier.

Installation Instructions

Written By Kevin, Philadelphia, PA on Monday, January 01, 2007

First of all I would like to say that I did notice quite a difference after Installing this Unit. Even after searching the internet and tsunami's page itself there was no mention of the correct way to charge the capacitor. There was only scary mention of what happens when you do it incorrectly. I searched for several hours of a resistor that was supposed to used for the initial charge. It was even mentioned in the directions on how to install the unit. So let it be known that this capacitor does not require any additional steps in order to initially charge it. This Capacitor does it itself when you connect it to the positive and negative cables. After figuring that part out it was very easy to add this to your system and I would highly recommend that you do.

I just hooked this
cap up to my sub amp
and it makes a huge
difference.
The subs in my trunk
are smoother and
louder then ever.
The instructions
can be a bit short
and confusing, but
Crutchfield customer
support cleared
them up for me.
This is the easiest
capacitor to install
you can buy.
You don't have to
worry about sparks
or explosions at
all. It comes ready
to be wired up with
no initial charge.
It does it its self
as soon as you turn
on the car. It even
has bright blue LCD
lights and sounds to
entertain you
while it charges.
Great addition for
any system. Maybe
now my brand new
battery wont die for
the 3rd time.
