Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

Our take on the Pioneer TS-A6961R

by Ken Nail

Pioneer's TS-A6961 6"x9" 3-way speakers have two things going for them — great sound and great style. The aggressively-styled grille adds a bold look in a custom installation, while the crisp, clean reproduction will make your music sparkle.

The woofer cones, made from rugged injection-molded polypropylene reinforced with Aramid fibers, belt out the bass while keeping distortion to a minimum. The midrange will be alive with energy, thanks to the 2-1/4" polyester fiber cone drivers. To add the all-important top-end details, the TS-A6961 sports 3/4" silver film dome tweeters that will put a shine on the highs.

Highlights:

  • 3-way 6"x9" speakers (pair)
  • Aramid fiber reinforced IMPP woofer with treated cloth surround
  • polyester fiber cone midrange
  • silver film dome tweeter
  • power range: 2-40 watts RMS

    Features

Woofers: Each speaker features an interlaced dual Aramid fiber-reinforced IMPP (Injection Molded Polypropylene) cone woofer. With long Aramid fibers interlacing together inside, this IMPP cone design provides the strength and rigidity powerful bass sound requires. The high-density, compressed internal architecture is resilient, stacks up against high power and transfers sound very quickly. The result is full-bodied, rich sound. Each woofer uses a treated cloth surround.

Midranges: Each speaker has a 2-1/4" PEI (Poly-Ether Imide) cone midrange.

Tweeters: Each speaker uses a 3/4" PET silver film dome tweeter for crisp, clear highs.

    Crutchfield rocks

Written By Steven, Marysville Ohio on Friday, July 14, 2006
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers far exceeded my expectations. They have a far better bass response than what I expected. I did use the foam baffels and it does make a big difference.I am running these speakers on the Dual 220 radio and it only puts out 17 watts and they rock. They do not distort at all and have excellent highs and lows.I have these installed in my rear deck and I have the 6 1/2" version in my front doors and I couldn't be happier. All I need now is a sub and im all set. Thanks Crutchfield.... You Rock!!!!!

    really nice

Written By Josh, Forest, VA on Thursday, July 06, 2006

I got these speakers to replace the factory speakers in my Honda that were burned out. The sound is amazing, both highs and lows come out very nicley on these. They sound good even with the factory headunit connected to them and gives you a good amount of bass. No suprise from a company like Pioneer.

    Excellent Factory Replacement

Written By Robert, Newcomerstown, OH on Saturday, February 25, 2006

I bought these to replace the factory speakers in my 04 Oldsmobile. The fit was almost perfect. The factory mounts worked but, it did require me to "break" off a tab that would not accomodate the Pioneers. The bass was not much more impressive than the factory 6X9, but OH! So Nice! were the highs that the produced. Cannot complain about the value or the sound. Very Good bargain, and an excellent factory replacement.

    There ok

Written By Andre, Beaufort, Sc on Thursday, February 02, 2006

There are ok speakers i have a mb quart 4200 amp hooked up to it and the highs and mids are not as loud. I should have gotten another set of infinity component set but i thought the 6x9 would have more bass. but they are still ok.

If serious about buying...read this review

Written By Nick, Kearney, NE on Thursday, January 19, 2006

I own a pair of these speakers and they are amazing. First of all I have them in sealed boxes and that probibaly make them that much better, the bass is compareable to an eight inch sub. The highs are more than what you need in a car and they can handle so much power that I CANT blow them...Ive tried just to see if they can handle the power and even when you turn it up they are still crystal clear. Overall these are the only speakers I would buy. You have a great deal for the price.

    Solid, Quality Product

Written By Snowcr4sh, Illinois on Tuesday, December 27, 2005

I recieved these as a gift to replace my factory 6x9's. These Pioneer's simply blow away my stock 6x9's with absolutly no comparison. The highs/mids are extremely accurate and the bass is amazing compared to the stock's. With the addition of these, i've replaced all the stock speakers in my car and i'm running them on an Alpine-9847, the sound is awsome and crystal clear. I recommend these to anyone who wants a nice quality 6x9 package without a jaw-dropping price.

    Excellent Buy

Written By Andy, Creston, IA on Monday, November 21, 2005

I bought these Pioneers to replace the factory speakers on my car. I chose these because of the affordability and their ability to pump out a lot of sound. I wasn't disapointed. These speakers provide a decent amount of bass, but it is a HUGE difference over factory speakers. I would recommend these to anyone looking to replace their factory installed speakers that doesn't want a hit to their pocket.

    Great Set.

Written By West, West Central, GA on Sunday, October 09, 2005

After deciding that I wanted a set of rear speakers to go into my Toyota Pickup that would be a large improvement over what I had, I chose these Pioneers. I put them in a set of Q-Logic truck boxes and mounted them behind the seat. I then put in a new DEH-3700 head unit and that really brought these speakers out. They very accurately hit the mids and highs and will take them as loud as you demand. For the lows... that's a different story. I largely purchased the 6x's for a great deal of added bass that I did not get. For the low volume settings, they're great, but once you take them up above normal listening level, you won't find the bass you need. I'm undecided on whether the speakers aren't getting enough power because of my charging system, or they just aren't built for bass but there isn't much to go around. I will say that if you threw them behind a 60x2 amp they would definitely shine, no doubt about it, and I may end up doing that but right now I'll probably just get a sub to fill in for the bass I'm lacking. Overall I'm extremely happy. They look absolutely excellent, even better than in the pictures. These are the speakers you want if you listen to alternative rock, country. music with good vocals or deep guitars, but if you're into rap or hard rock these would make excellent fronts, but don't rely on them for huge bass.
