Our take on the Monster Power® HDP 2500

by Loren Barstow

Protect your home theater system with the Monster Power HDP 2500. It provides a high level of protection against dips and spikes, and filters out noise to keep your gear performing at its best.

Noise-filtered outlets that protect your gear and improve performance
On the rear panel you'll find ten outlets grouped into three separate banks. Each bank features noise filters designed to optimize performance from different types of components. Plug your HDTV and Blu-ray player into the High Definition Digital outlets to enjoy an eye-popping picture, and connect your home theater receiver to a High-Current Audio receptacle for robust surround sound. The HDP 2500 also gives you three sets of "coax" connections to guard against voltage spikes coming through your cable or satellite line, plus connections for phone and Ethernet cables.

The front panel includes another outlet for components you won't have connected all the time, such as a camcorder. Two USB ports let you connect your MP3 player or any other device that can be charged via USB. A door covers these connections when you're not using them, giving the HDP 2500 a neat, clean look.

Microprocessor-controlled circuitry takes power protection to a new level
A sophisticated microprocessor acts as a first line of defense against sudden power spikes. It monitors incoming AC power and immediately disconnects your equipment if the voltage reaches unsafe high or low levels. When the voltage returns to a safe range, the PowerCenter reconnects your system. A front-panel voltage meter makes it easy to keep tabs on your power. Monster's five-year warranty includes $400,000 insurance on properly connected equipment.

    Features

Overview: The Monster Power HDP 2500 High Definition PowerCenter protects your home audio/video equipment from dangerous power surges and spikes. It has 11 AC outlets (including one on the front panel), a USB Power Port, as well as coaxial, telephone (RJ-14) and network (RJ-45) jacks for complete protection. The HDP 2500 has 6,066 joules of protection, and a digital voltage display on the front panel.

Monster Tri-Mode: The unit's patented Tri-Mode circuitry uses relays, MOVs (Metal Oxide Varistors), and thermal fuses to protect against dangerous power surges, dips and spikes that can travel over all three power lines (Line, Neutral, and Ground). When it senses dangerous power conditions, Tri-Mode automatically disconnects AV components and sounds an audible alarm, letting you know the HDP 2500 has protected your equipment.

Monster T2 Technology: The exclusive Monster T2 technology is an active electronic microprocessor-controlled circuit that sits in front of the surge protection circuitry. It monitors the line, neutral, and ground lines and automatically disconnects the PowerCenter from the AC power line when a long duration low-voltage sag or high-voltage swell occurs (continuous voltage below 80 Vrms or above 132 Vrms). When the under- or over-voltage condition returns to normal, T2 reconnects the PowerCenter to the electricity and resets to full operation after 15 seconds. If the power fault condition does not clear, the T2 circuit keeps the unit shut down.

Monster HD Clean Power Stage 2: The HDP 2500 is equipped with Monster Clean Power Stage 2 technology to filter both AC power line noise and reduce noise generated by your connected equipment. The Stage 2 filtration removes the effect of dirty power for better picture and sound from your HD audio and video equipment.

AC Outlets: The HDP 2500 has 10 surge-protected, color coded AC power outlets on the rear panel. The outlets are divided into three filtered categories: High Definition Digital Filter (6 unswitched outlets), Analog Audio Filter (2 unswitched outlets), and Ultra-High Current Audio Filter (2 switched outlets). The 2 switched outlets are PLC-compatible (see below).

Powerline Network Compatible (PLC): Powerline Communication, also known as HomePlug, is a new type of home network system that works on your home's existing electrical wiring. Ordinary surge protectors can block PLC signals, but the Monster HDP 2500 is engineered to allow full-speed PLC network communications. PLC-compatible devices should only be plugged into the two Ultra-High Current Audio Filter Outlets.

Coaxial, Network and Phone Protection: Cable, satellite, modem, DSL, and telephone lines can also carry dangerous power surges and spikes. Three pairs of coaxial (two pairs have a 3 GHz bandwidth for satellite) and one pair of Ethernet (RJ-45) connections are provided to protect your home network. Also, there are three RJ-14 jacks (1 input, 2 outputs) for phone and DSL lines.

USB Power Ports: The front panel of the HDP 2500 features two USB power ports and an auxiliary AC outlet (unswitched). The power ports provide power for portable devices, such as media players, that recharge their battery from a USB connection. The USB power ports and auxiliary outlet are covered by a hinged panel with a magnetic closure.

Front Panel: In addition to the USB power ports, the front panel has a large digital display to indicate the voltage on the power line, a display dimmer, a power on/off switch (for the switched outlets), and a number of LED indicators. The LEDs indicate the following:

    • Clean Power On
    • Protection On
    • Ground OK
    • Unswitched On
    • Switched On
    • Abnormal Voltage

Warranty and Connected Equipment Protection Coverage: The HDP 2500 comes with a 5-year limited warranty, and Connected Equipment Protection Coverage of up to $400,000 for 5 years. Details of the warranty and connected equipment coverage can be found in the Owner's Manual.

Thinking this will do the job...

Written By Anonymous, Jacksonville, FL on Thursday, June 07, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After much consideration, I decided on this Monster unit to protect my home theater. It has a higher joule rating than its Panamax counterpart. It is double-height, which I wanted for the myriad of plugs and wall warts I had that needed plugged in. It's a little crowded on my stand, but that's my stand, and no fault of Monster's.

Once hooked up, I noticed that I had more blacks on my Sony LED LCD TV, that used to be gray. That necessitated a re-calibration of my TV with my Digital Video Essentials Blu-Ray, which resulted in a noticeably better picture. No hums, nothing except a bright blue display to tell me it's working. I keep the display off most of the time. The USB inputs are nice for charging my cell phone.

One thing I did not like is Monster's documentation that states it doesn't matter which plug you plug in where on the back of the unit. It actually does matter. I had my TV plugged in to an Amp outlet, and it wouldn't come on. Re-plugging it into the TV outlet (seems obvious, but was testing it) fixed it and it has worked wonderfully ever since.

I feel more secure, especially with Florida spring thunderstorms, knowing that my system is fully protected now. Goodbye, $30 Phillips power strip.
    Pros:
front USB inputs for recharging voltage readout double-height to accommodate my myriad of AC plugs and adapters improved TV picture!
    Cons:
distracting bright blue display, even at dimmest setting vague instructions on which outlet to use for which device
