Why install component speakers?

A component speaker system gives you the best possible performance from your car audio system. A system consists of separate woofers, tweeters, and crossovers, each designed to cover one specific range of frequencies. As separate components, the woofer can move freely to deliver more powerful performance, while the tweeter can be custom-mounted in a better spot up closer to your ears, revealing a whole new world of detail. Separate crossovers are far superior to the simple filters wired into full-range speakers, so the components work together for smoother, more focused sound.

Our take on the Infinity Reference 6020cs

by Leigh Schoettinger

Looking to step up in sound quality? Say hello to Infinity Reference component speakers. These precision components fill your car with bold, radiant sound, so you hear your music as it's meant to be heard — clear, natural, and detailed.

The Reference 6020cs system features low-impedance 6-1/2"/6-3/4" woofers, designed to extract maximum power from your amplifier or car stereo. And Infinity increased the surface area of its woofer cones, so they provide up to 30 percent more cone area than other speakers of the same size category. As a result, you'll enjoy efficient, healthy bass.

Mount the soft dome tweeters with a clear shot to your ears, and listen as a whole new world opens up. In the tight confines of your car, you'll hear subtle nuances and little details in your music that you may never have noticed before. Infinity includes its unique Starfish™ mounting brackets, so you can install the tweeters in a variety of factory speaker openings.

External crossovers direct the high and low notes to the proper speakers for great clarity and high efficiency. You can adjust the tweeter level for best performance in your vehicle. Let Infinity Reference components help you rediscover the fun of listening to music in your car.

Important Note: These Infinity speakers use a low impedance design to pull more power safely from your car stereo or amplifier. This design is compatible with virtually all factory and aftermarket stereos.

    Woofers
    Tweeters
    Crossovers

    Woofers

Plus One+ Woofer Cones: Each speaker uses a cone significantly larger than other speakers of the same size. This is accomplished by using a new basket design and hi-roll surround. The Plus One+ design offers greater bass output and a significant increase in efficiency.

Woofer Materials: Each woofer is constructed from Injection-Molded Polypropylene. This process of cone molding assures a uniform cone thickness for superior linearity and clarity. It is also lighter weight and more rigid for decreased distortion and improved bass response.

Hi-roll Rubber Surrounds: The hi-roll rubber surrounds allow the woofers a greater range of movement, resulting in longer X-max and more bass output.

Intermount III: Infinity's Intermount III mounting system allows the 6020cs woofers to fit in 6-1/2" and 6-3/4" applications. A metal adapter ring is included with each woofer for certain 6-1/2" applications and a plastic adapter ring for each speaker is included for 6-3/4" applications.

    Tweeters

Tweeter Material: Each 1" tweeter uses an edge-driven textile dome for smooth, accurate highs.

Tweeter Mounting: The I-Mount tweeter mounting system and Starfish mounting brackets give you several different ways to mount the tweeters:

    • I-Mount Tweeter Mounting System: The tweeters can be surface- or flush-mounted with Infinity's innovative I-Mount system:
      • Surface Mount: Surface mounting the tweeters involves screwing the surface-mount cup to the mounting location, then inserting and locking the tweeter into the cup.
      • Flush Mount: Flush mounting is made easy through the use of the threaded flush-mount adapter and plastic locking nut. Once a cutout is made, the flush-mount adapter (with the tweeter installed) is inserted into the hole. The large plastic locking nut is threaded onto the adapter (from behind the mounting surface) to hold the complete assembly securely in place. When flush mounted, the tweeters may be angled for optimum response and imaging.
    • Starfish Mounting Brackets: The Starfish mounting brackets allow the tweeters to be installed in factory locations behind the grilles:
      • Surface Mount (behind grille panel): Once the Starfish bracket is trimmed, it is screwed to the mounting surface behind the grille panel. Then, the tweeter is inserted into the bracket and locked into place.
      • Flush Mount (behind grille panel): Once the Starfish bracket is trimmed, it is dropped into the cutout in the mounting surface behind the grille panel. Then, the tweeter is inserted into the bracket and locked into place.
      • Bottom Mount (to grille panel): Once the Starfish bracket is trimmed, it is secured to the underside of the grille panel. The tweeter must be inserted into the bracket and locked into place before the bracket is mounted.
      • Flush Mount (in-dash location): Once the Starfish bracket is trimmed, it is dropped into the cutout in the dash. Then, the tweeter is inserted into the bracket and locked into place.

    Crossovers

2-Way Crossovers: These speakers include computer-optimized, voice-matched crossovers. Each crossover features an 18dB/octave, 3.5kHz high-pass network for the tweeter and an 18dB/octave, 3.5kHz low-pass network for the woofer.

Selectable Tweeter Output Level: Each crossover allows you to select the tweeter output level according to system requirements and personal preference. The tweeter level may be set to "-3 dB" or "0 dB."

Crossover Connections: The crossover inputs and outputs are gold-plated screw terminals.

Mounting: There are four mounting holes in the base of each crossover.

    Crossover Dimensions: W = 3.475", H = 1.245", D = 4.315"

    Good overall value

Written By Anonymous, Orlando, FL on Thursday, January 14, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these in the front doors replacing the OEM 9yr old speakers. The installation for the 6 1/2 was pretty straight forward. Take out the old; drill new holes; mount the new... the tweeters however are another story! They do not fit the factory mount at all. If you want to keep a factory look and not install them external to the door grill you will need to be creative. I ended up breaking the OEM tweeter to use as a mounting plate for the new tweeter. The first door took ~2.5 hours and the second door ~1.5. The wiring harnesses need to be modified for use with the crossover and mounting the crossover is another consideration. I drilled a hole through the mounting holes and tie wrapped the unit to the main wire harness. Overall, the install was not not difficult just challenging and a test of my creativity.

The speakers, along with the old Kenwoods in the back doors, have revived the sound quality in the truck. I once again enjoy listening.

Make sure you have enough wiring harnesses, I had to get another set for the back doors since I only ordered one with the speakers and I was replacing all four speaker locations.

Also, depending on how you install these you'll need more connectors for the speakers. the package seemed to be short some, but that may have been because I replaced all the speakers and mixed up some of the parts.

I would recommend these speakers for the front doors even with the small challenges of the install.

Jeep Grand Cherokee with Infinity System

Written By Justin, Tuxedo, NY on Saturday, October 17, 2009

When i first got these speakers the sound really bad no bass at all, and i was waiting about a week because you have to breakin the speakers and they still sounded the same. Then i realized that somthing was wrong. I decided to to disconnect the speaker bar (by the tail gate if your vehicle has it) and then when i turned on my radio all of a sudden i got bass finally. I am using the factory amp so my only guess that the amp cannot handle 4 2ohm speakers and then the 2 factory 8 ohm speakers. Before i reinstalled the sound bar i pluged it back in and just disconeccted the woofers and just left the tweaters pluged in because i dont have any in the rear door. These speakers sound great know so i only can image what they will sound like once it goes the the actually breakin in now with the bass.

    The icing on the cake!

Written By Michael, Akron, OH on Friday, October 16, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a Regular cab, Chevy S-10. I have Infinity 6 1/2 coax. in the doors, 2 Infinity Silk
dome tweeters, one mounted next to the coax, one on the sail panel. I have a set of
Boston Acoustics 4 X 6's in the dash and a Kicker 12" CompVT Subwoofer/box in the
    back. I have an Alpine 400 X 1 amp powering the Sub, an Alpine 40 X 4, (50 X 4 at 2
ohm) amp powering the coaxials and one of the tweeters, (just measured the
impedance, will power the second tweeter, powered by the head unit in the sail panel,
with the amp on that channel also). The 4 X 6's do fine with my Kenwood head unit. So,
for the other channel of the amp, I got a set of these components and a Q form, kick
panel mount, and I'M BLOWN AWAY! THESE SPEAKERS ROCK! I already had a loud,
can't hear the person sitting next to you system, now, the dedicated midrange makes
every detail perfect. The drums and guitars are so accurate; kinda muddled together,
even with the extra tweeters with just the coaxials. With 3 separate tweeters, I have to
turn the highs down, but now I have the mids covered so well, I can't believe I waited so
long to get components. Of course, with the addition of another set of speakers, it's
louder than before, but now it sounds like a concert in my truck. I hope there's a few sets
of these left in a month.. I'll get more just to have them!

    Great Sound

Written By Patrick, Niantic CT on Wednesday, October 07, 2009
    Installed in a 1997 Saab 900SE
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Picked these up to replace a pair of Kicker KS600 and KS650 speakers which didn't seem to have the sound i really wanted. I've Had these infinity's for over 6 months and they are still going flawlessly. Awesome crossovers make it an easy install and almost impossible to blow the tweeters with no mids/lows going to them. I have them running off an Alpine MRP-F300 amp So the fact that you can run these at 2ohms is a huge improvement from most other speakers as i was able to get 75x4 outta my amp instead of a 50x4 at 4 ohms. Hardly any distortion at high volumes, and i mean really high volumes. I turned the tweeters down a bit as the crossover has a +3 db and a -3 db option when hooking them up because with 4 + the standard 6 1/2's in a 97 Saab convertible its a little overpowering even with 2 Kenwood subs in a 1.75 each sealed box running off a clarion amp at 425 rms each. Its hard to get good sound in a convertible and these really accomplish just that. With my old speakers i couldn't hear much of anything over the subs pounding when i really got into it. Haven't blown a single one of these speakers/tweeters while i blew 3 pairs of JL tweeters with the same power recommendations. Infinity defiantly pulled ahead on this one. Would definitely buy these again and will most likely carry them to the next car as they are able to handle a bit more power then I'm even pushing them. I would how ever strongly suggest an amp with these as they are pretty power hungry.

Used with success in JET SKI

Written By Colin, Houston, TX on Tuesday, October 06, 2009

    Pros: DURABLE, loud, inexpensive
    Cons: 'good enough' sound quality

I was looking for some reasonably priced speakers to bring somewhat clear but especially loud sound to my jet ski. For those not familiar with stand-up jet skiing it usually involves the jet ski being covered in water or jumping across ski boat wakes. I installed one woofer and one tweeter running off a 1000W RMS amp (overkill but it was laying around). The speakers have stood up to a year and a half of playing really loud while being submerged and beaten on choppy waters. Oh yeah the underside of the woofer and the crossover are exposed to the water, gas vapors, and engine heat inside the two-stroke ski. Sound quality -even bass- is pretty impressive considering cost, loudness, and durability. I also own 6 series at home and some nice BostonAs in my car, this doesn't come close in quality but if you want loud, durable, inexpensive, and 'good enough for outside' quality these speakers are amazing! I was expecting to replace the speakers every few months due to water and heat, but they keep kicking! P.S. when the woofer gets filled with water it's fun to watch the bass notes kick the water right off in concentric star patterns!

I've installed the Infinity 6020CS in both front and back without any problems, they fit perfect. Had to do a little custom work with tweeters to get them in the stock location by door handle and was able to do with out any cutting. They sound excellant.

    good buy

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

well i bought these back in april 09 to replace the monsoon system in my 01 passat. knowing next to nothing about car systems and things of that nature i asked around to alot of different people who installed systems, had systems or knew more than me; so everyone. infinity was the name that kept coming up so i decided to go with their cheapest line considering cash was limited. Also, just to make sure the quality of the sound would be consistant regardless of the volume, i hooked an alpine mrp-f300 amplifier for a boost in power. its all wired nicely with streetwires as well. so after breaking in the speakers, creating some new rattles in my car and investing quite a bit of cash for the purchase and installation of these things, i blew out a tweeter. but its all good because im getting it replaced but it makes me wonder how much longer does the rest of my system have before one by one my speakers die. anyway, overall the infinity references were a good buy and if you want quality for a good price, go with infinity.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am a repeat customer of Infiniti. I bought these as I own a '97 Dakota that came from the factory w/Infiniti sound system already so install was a no-brainer. The only thing I had to do was make new brckts. for the tweeters as the new ones are a little smaller than the old.
As for sound,if you are expecting bass that rattles your insides, GO BUY A SUB and power amp! The bass, and highs, and mid-ranges are PHENOMINAL the way they are. We all must remember these spkrs. are only 6.5 in. and they will only move that much air! Would I buy them again?

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had these installed for about a month and a half now and I couldn't be happier with them. I have them running off a Rockford 50x4, Tweeters on -3, High pass filter at 100Hz, No bass/treble boost, Bass 0, Mid 0, and treble -1. I also dynamated and sealed the doors. Mid bass is fantastic and the highs get more mellow as time goes by. Give them time to break in and they will not disappoint you.

    Will not Disappoint

Written By MelloFello9, Harrisburg, PA on Thursday, June 18, 2009

I have two pairs of these in an '04 GTI and could not be happier with the sound. They are driven by an older amp (75x4 min@12.5vdc). Input originates from a Sony CDX-C910 head-unit routing through a Sony ES4000 DSP module. All signal paths are optical.

I actually preferred these to the Kappa line as the high-end delivery seems smoother. Matter of taste (prefer soft-domes), I'm sure, however, I did test drive the Kappas and returned for the Reference. I have these running on the -3dB line and would suggest that as a starting point for folks.

Power handling has not been an issue at all. The 75w. listed earlier is waaaay conservative for this amp. I'm running them at 13.9v and, combined with the incredibly low 2 ohm impedance, I'm sure they're getting 100 - 110w solid with peaks well above that number. They are crossed-over at a relatively low 70 Hz and not a single errant noise has been emitted from them.....and I beat them pretty bad! They seem to blend particularly well with the Infinity Perfect 12's, too. Imaging is simply amazing with proper tweeter placement.

This is my fourth set of Ref. components and tenth set of speakers from the Reference line. I have not had a single quality issue with ANY of my Infinity speakers. If you have problems with them, check your install twice as it's more than likely not Infinitys' fault... ; ) Not saying their infallable, just very consistent in my experiences.

Installed in a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado

I took the deal on the Infintiy 6" components and 5 & 1/4's package deal. I just installed them in my 08 Silverado EXT CAB. Install was typical Crutchfield: easy as reading the directions. I had to make 2 calls to techs but everything else was beginner level. With my 2- 10"JL W3v3, RF Power 600-2, Pioneer AVIC F90BT, This set up put the icing on the cake. This is the best System I have ever run (15 years of being an audio freak).

They have not even been broken in, but are a great addition. Step to the Kappas if you have the $$, I had the $$ but went with the reference and they rock. The Harmon Kardon headphones were a bonus ..... THX again Crutchfield!! See you next system.

    Great Buy

Installed in a 1998 GMC Sierra
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are way better then some of the reviews lead on. I have a '98 GMC K1500 and I replaced both door speakers and the tweeters. The tweeters will fit with some slight modifications to the original tweeters bracket. The speakers have great sound, tweeters are way to sharp on the +3db so I would recommend the -3db or put the crossover in an easily accessible location (I think those are the correct settings its been a month since I've messed with it). The bass is better then expected, it is really impressive for a 6.5" speaker at least when your listening to rock, some rap sounds terrible if the volume is to high. I think that some of the customers were expecting the sound of a (12" sub) judging from the reviews. Make sure to buy some additional speaker wire, about 4 ft should be enough if you are mounting the the speaker and tweeter relatively close the the crossover.

Super clear sound! I got these to replace the factory speakers in my 06 Colorado crew cab and they made me have to invest in dynamat to keep my panels from vibrating. One thing you do need to break them in!! When I first turned on my stereo I thought what a waste of money. Yes the highs were fantastic, but it was like there was no more bass than the factory ones, but after about a week I found myself having to dynamat everything.

    Buy them NOW!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had a set of Infinity Reference 6.5 installed in stock door location, they've always sounded terrible and always cut out at higher volume. I had assumed my Blaupunkt head didn't have enough juice for them, and they sat too low to the floor. I decided I HAD to find a component system for little cash, found and ordered a Sony system from a local store. Just for fun I came back to Crutchfield and found this great deal. Ordered, delivered and installed them myself within two days. THIS is what I'm talking about! The 2 ohm resistance and separate tweeters make all the difference in the the world! After redoing the Blaupunkt EQ I'm getting great sound at lower volume, and even more when I crank it! No breakup at all, and my car FINALLY has a soundstage! The flushmounts look great and it was easy putting it all together with theCrutchfield Master sheets. I can't imagine what this would sound like with an amp, but I'll find out next year because another set of these front and back are going in my new car.

The Sony system arrived two days later, returned it unopened to the local store. The tech had soldered caps onto the old speakers, I'm guessing he was trying to compensate for cutting splicing into the harness for the install. Just another reason to do it yourself with a little help from your friends!

If you're looking at these speakers, pull the trigger! A great deal at this price!

    Infinity 6020CS in Porsche Boxster

Written By Dave S., Denver, CO on Sunday, May 24, 2009

I replaced my factory head unit with an Alpine IDA-X305 and run the speakers off an Alpine MRP-F300 amp. (50 watts per channel x 4). I added the Infinity 6020CS speakers to the doors running on the rear channel and added some 4 inch Alpines in the dash location running off the front channel(with high pass on).
All in all I like the way it turned out. These 6020CS speakers carry a ton of bass and provide decent sound. They seem a little light in mid-range, but the 4 inch Alpines cover that range pretty well. These Infinitys crank. The tweeters provide clear high's ( I have mine turned down -3db) and the mid-woofers provide fairly deep base. Not what you'd get from a true subwoofer, but better than I expected.

With the factory stereo and speakers I couldn't always tell what song was playing when driving on the highway with the top down. With this set up the music is loud and clear.

    A crystal-clear winner from Infinity

    Installed in a 2006 Toyota 4Runner
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We installed the Infinity Reference 6020cs to replace the front factory speakers in a 2006 Toyota 4Runner, installed Dynamat in the doors, and kept the factory head.
The sound felt a little bright, so we used the -db setting on the included crossover, and it worked like a charm. The result was full, rich, and very tight sound, with remarkable well defined bottom-end, and crisp, smooth, full highs.
The next step is to replace the factory head. We can't wait to see what that brings from these speakers. These speakers are a crystal-clear winner from Infinity.

Will not buy Infinity ever again

Written By Anonymous, Gaithersburg, MD on Saturday, May 16, 2009

I received these as a gift from my family and within three days of installing them one of the Tweeters blew out. It had been popping a little from day one. If this is an accurate indication of Infinity's quality I will never buy from them again.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

i had this system replace the factory infinity system in my dodge 1500. it was not up to par. the front three factory speakers had to be disconnected to have the new ones work, needed another set of cross overs, and after all said and done, it was not even close to what was in the truck.thinking about taking them out but then im left with two holes in the doors where the new highs were installed
