Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Kenwood KDC-BT945U

by Ken Nail

Kenwood's KDC-BT945U CD receiver is a "do-it-all" solution for your car's audio needs. Built-in Bluetooth®, powered by industry leader Parrot, offers the extra convenience of hands-free calling and audio streaming when paired with compatible devices. The iPod® click wheel-style interface lets you fly through menu options with ease, while the 5-line LCD display makes it easy to find tracks in your digital music library.

Take charge of your iPod
Many receivers let you connect your iPod — most don't make it as easy to find your favorite tunes as this Kenwood does. Grab the big jog dial and skip through your files in 10% jumps, search alphabetically, or search by related genre, as the multi-line display shows off your artist and song info in clear detail. Plus, your passengers can use the iPod's controls to switch songs if you want to concentrate on the drive.

When you hook your iPod to the receiver's USB input, you'll bypass your iPod's digital-to-analog converter, allowing Kenwood's superior 24-bit DAC to make your files sound their best. If you're not using an iPod, you can load up a thumb drive with MP3, WMA, and AAC files, connect it to the rear USB input, and get the same fidelity. You'll also find a rear auxiliary input for MP3 players and other audio sources.

Excellent audio control
Kenwood's Sound Excellence feature offers enhancements designed to give you the best possible sound in your vehicle. Highway Sound optimizes your music so it can be better heard over the road noise, while the 3-band parametric equalizer lets you adjust the tone to suit your vehicle. The Speaker Settings and Cabin Size functions provide settings that are tailored to your vehicle's size and speaker configuration.

The Digital E's crossover feature allows you to trim some of the lows out of your front and rear speakers, and adjust the low frequencies going to a sub, so your equipment plays more efficiently. If you're building a full system, the three sets of preamp outputs send a strong 4-volt signal to your amps for superior sound quality and lower noise levels.

Expand your options
Kenwood's optional HD Radio™ tuner lets you access the superior fidelity and extra programming offered by participating stations in your area. Connect a satellite radio tuner and enjoy the mix of news, sports, entertainment, and commercial-free music.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use this adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPod note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

      Rubbish

Written By John, Edmonds, WA on Wednesday, October 03, 2012

You might see this as a good value, but you get what you pay for. You may not believe this, but a 3-EQ is not enough! It doesn't allow you to easily set a good range of audio settings. I bought this unit after having a much higher end Kenwood die on me and the sound difference between having a 7-EQ and this 3-EQ is MASSIVE. Also, the bluetooth setup on these Kenwoods hardly work at all. People can never understand you, and the default "auto answer" setting is awful.
      Pros:
      CD-Player
      Cons:
      Bluetooth, EQ, Uneasy Pandora function.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I LOVE this headunit. It's great. I wanted something not too flashy and obnoxious. Bluetooth streaming works wonderfully, though I have had some weird issues (not sure if its on the phone end or the HU end) with it only wanting to do calls and not streaming. Simple switch on and off of bluetooth fixes it. It's reasonably easy to use once you get the hang of it. I might even buy another for my second car.
      Pros:
Simple, not flashy, works like it should, easy to navigate, does everything I need without needing all the accessories.
      Cons:
      bluetooth issues, but very rarely.

      Great HU from Kenwood

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this after reading many reviews from Crutchfield and other websites. I am not disappointed with this unit and if you can find it, get it! If you look at other newer head units they don't support A2DP and if they do it comes with a much higher price. To me you can stream Pandora, Slacker Radio, etc. through your phone and you do not need your deck to do it. What I think really matters is to assure that you can establish a good and clear connection to stream media from your phone, laptop, iPad, etc. and this unit does. The bluetooth calling is great as well. You do need to do some fine tuning to get rid of echoing, but once you set the correct configurations it works great. Kudos to Crutchfield for exceeding my expectations with the physical appearance of the unit. Even through this was a dented/refurbished unit it was sent packaged like new. All the cables were properly tied up, everything in plastic, and the unit didn't even look like it was used. Once installed it worked like a new unit as well. I now have no fear of buying any refurbished items from Crutchfield knowing that they send a product that is of great quality, and at a much lower price than brand new items. To all Toyota Tacoma owners (2005-Present) any single deck Kenwood flip down head units will work, and I can vouch since this fit perfect in my truck. In a nutshell buy this unit because it has A2DP, the sound is great, it works well and save money by buying refurbished units from Crutchfield.
      Pros:
Supports A2DP, Clear calls with bluetooth, Great Sound, Great Functionality, Supports USB, Supports iphones and ipod nanos (6th gen works because I used mine), Simple and sleek design, Unit was sent like new from Crutchfield, Crutchfield return policy works with refurbished items, Crutchfield exceeded my expectations of what a refurbished item would look like and packaged
      Cons:
I do have one gripe about the interface used. It is nice to have all the animations, and selection options, but I would like to be able to move through the head unit options and sources quicker. The bluetooth phone book can use some work. I have issues where the phone book will not sync completely, and the search function does not work where you select a person's name. No option to set how the person's name should be displayed on the screen. To me minor gripes since everything else works great.

      Great Buy

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great value and made a great improvement to the sound quality of my 2004 Expedition. This is an older unit so it was mainly made for bluetooth phone connections. Before you stream music make sure to go into the bluetooth setting under phone settings and select 'all' speakers. Factory default is front speakers only. Display does not show title, artist or album when using Spotify, Pandora or any other app based music player. I am pretty competent with electronics and was able to operat after a days use. May be more dificult for those less techno savvy. Make sure bluetooth is turned on for your phone prior to starting your car, otherwise you will have to connect manually or turn deck off then back on.

After a few months if operation, these are the only issues i could find. Now that i have the operation down, it is conveniant to blast my music, talk on the phone and even use my voice text with little distractions from the road.

I would recommend this as an inexpensive replacement to a factory headset.
      Pros:
Better sound than factory Easy hands free use Sleek look Simple remote Easy installation
      Cons:
Sync not effective with new iPhones (4 or higher) and Droids Settings scattered between phone, audio and system settings instead of one spot. Mic has to be spoken to louder than normal speaking

      Decent Headunit

Written By Stephen, Ocala, FL on Monday, January 09, 2012

I got this headunit along with four new Kenwood KFC 1693PS speakers as a graduation present. I love how I connect my phone wirelessly with the bluetooth connection. This feature is pretty awesome, considering that before I had this headunit, I was using one of those tape player to mp3 player adapters in my stock Toyota headunit to connect my phone. The sound is much better than the stock system my Tundra came with, but I think the speakers are the main reason for that.
      Pros:
      Bluetooth connectivity
      Cons:
The newer version with Pandora Radio built in came out a month after I got this one... and I prefer the stock look of a double din unit, but that is trivial.

      Great head unit!

Written By Woody, Duluth, MN on Thursday, November 03, 2011
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great head unit. I have the same unit in it's Excelon KDC-X994 version, only difference is the 5 band EQ instead of the 3 band on this one. Bluetooth works great and is easy to set up, Ipod is also easy. My only complaint is that setting presets isn't very intuitive, and without the remote it's very complicated to flip through them. I understand that is a sacrifice you make for a nice smooth faceplate, but it could be a little simpler. This is a very minor gripe, it sets up easily, sounds great, and I love the detailed setup feature that lets you fine tune it for your car size, speaker size, and speaker placement.
      Pros:
It does everything! Bluetooth, Ipod, great tuner. Works with both my phones very well (too bad it can't connect to both at the same time), Ipod sounds great through it, and the search functions rock!
      Cons:
Some menu features require drilling deep into the menu to set. Simple things like moving through radio presets pretty much require the remote control.

Bought this stereo as a refurb for a great price. I was not disappointed. Some have complained about the glare; I have none. Some complain about the user interface;I'm an idiot but found the interface easy. This stereo has soooo many functions that the menu is a bit long but after about a week of use it is easy. The blue tooth phone works great; crystal clear on both ends of the call. Stereo has lots of power and lots of sound adjustment. USB works perfect with my other storage devices. I can't say enough about how pleased I am with this unit. My only minor complaint is that the white lighting doesn't match the multitude of amber colored dash lights in my G35 coupe. However I knew it only had white lighting before I bought it. Thanks Crutchfield for the great HU and free install gear. I'll shop again!!!

Bought this as a refurb and was a little nervous. But for the money and options I wanted I thought it was the best bang for my buck and let me tell you I was not disappointed. Bluetooth works awesome no problems to sync my Samsung Intensity 2 phone book and all. Thumb drive for music is great (broken iPod). Sound is amazing compared to stock AM/FM . Install was a snap and looks beautiful. Very happy!

The Good: The Kenwood was excellent pairing with my HTC EVO. BT
Streaming was excellent. Pod integration was good. It has plenty of options. I
like the different scan options. Sound is good with many options. The Kenwood
      has a very clean design.
The Bad: Downloading my address book did not work. The Menu options hard
      to use.
The Ugly: The display was very hard to see in normal daylight. This unit needs
      a color display.

      BT touchy, so-so interface

Written By ToddB, Atlanta, GA on Monday, May 02, 2011

Had this unit five months now. Really good sound, even with my factory speakers ('03 Ram 2500 quad.) Tuner works very well pulling in FM and AM. Aux works well (XM radio handheld,) I like being able to adjust the sound level. Flash drive via USB works okay, but the Kenwood software is clunky, and it sometimes shows a different song on the display from what is playing. Haven't used an iPod. But I must agree with the comments about the interface. It would be fine for something sitting on a shelf at home, but not for driving. It just takes too many inputs at too many levels to move around. Can't even turn it off or mute with with a single button push. But my biggest frustration factor is the BT handsfree. When it works, it's great. But it doesn't always connect automatically. Or it connects fine, and then later driving down the road you realize it's disconnected itself. I've seen this behavior on two different phones now, though they're both Casio G'zOne (was Boulder, now Commando Android 2.2) so that could have something to do with it. With the Boulder, it would sometimes confuse my phone so badly I had to do a hard reset to allow it to make calls after I shut off the car.

Great sound, great features, great looks

Written By Eric, Albany, NY on Monday, May 02, 2011
Installed in a 2002 Subaru Outback
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted a stereo that sounds good, doesn't look flashy, and has good features,
and this fit the bill perfectly.

This is one of the few stereos with understated looks, and I like that. I don't
want fluorescent displays, flashing colors, fancy symbols, etc. I want it to blend
into my dash like it belongs there, and after I turn it on and switch to the right
source, I want to forget about it. Most units are like needy children, constantly
saying "Look at me! See what I can do!" and flashing some obnoxious light at
you. This one has the quiet confidence of an adult that knows he's good at
what he does, and knows you'll come find him when you need him.

The basic sound from this unit is good, even with OEM speakers and no power
amp. It sounds natural and clear, and tweaking the settings gives it just a little
extra polish. I did find that the bass was just a little on the weak side and had to
turn the bass boost up to its highest level, but I'm sure that will improve with an
      amp and better speakers.

Other's complaints about the interface made me a little nervous, but I found it to
be similar to other units and not that difficult to figure out. I didn't find the
animations to be distracting. In fact, they may be helpful, since I'd press a
button and glace back at the road while the animation played.

      Good Sound. Horrible Interface

Written By Jedsled, Gallatin, TN on Friday, April 15, 2011
Installed in a 2002 Ford Explorer
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this radio for my 2002 Explorer. The radio was easy to install, as they mostly are. The radio would not pair to my Droid and the interface was extremely difficult to get around. My wife read the instructions to me as we drove on an all-day car trip and we still couldn't figure things out. There is no Mute or ATT button on the radio itself, and I very much like having a mute button. The screen was very hard to see during the daylight. It washed out in almost every situation no matter if I changed the screen display to positive or negative.

The only good thing about the radio was that it sounded great. It had very good power and you could tailor the sound to match your car really nicely.

If only Kenwood would design a radio interface that is as good as the sound, they'd have kept my business. I returned the radio for a Pioneer. The Pioneer doesn't sound as good, but it works seamlessly with my phone and the controls are a breeze.

takes a while to learn your way around the menu system but it has many fine
tuning (maybe too many) options for your vehicle. USB is on the rear on this
unit. Most Kenwoods have front USB ports. I didn't catch that until after I'd
ordered but that's my fault. it's just a personal preference of where you'd rather
have the USB. The remote is excellent and may be easier to navigate with than
the unit's buttons. More than enough power especially when paired with a
good self powered sub. For the price and Crutchfield service it is hard to beat.

      Ipod Control Little Slow

Written By Jared H., Indiana on Friday, March 25, 2011
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this unit as a 3nd replacement radio. My first radio I had installed
was a pioneer 7900bt worked great until bluetooth quite. I decided to purchase
a new pioneer bought another pioneer 8200bt from crutchfield worked fine but
could not control menu with remote and to much mid bass. I returned that unit
to crutchfield for a replacement (you have 30 days to exchange, I did not have a
problem with sending it back). I returned the pioneer for this unit my
suggestion if you purchase this unit is to read the manual which is on a disc,
that will save a lot of time. The controls once you get used to them are easy the
eq is great sounds much better than the pioneer and the bluetooth
connections is fast and easy. I only have 2 small very small problems with this
unit sometimes my phone does not connect to the unit so I have to turn it off
and back on for it to connect, the other small problem is when hooked to a
Ipod takes a while for it to read the playlist changing songs and albums are
quick but the first time it reads the data from the ipod kind of slow. Other than
those 2 small dislikes its a solid unit. I have been messing with car audio for
about 17 years and this unit is a good unit at a reasonable price.

      Great system

Installed in a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced my factory system in a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Install took about
25 minutes, excluding the wiring harness connections. The fit is great and it
doesn't look overly flashy or stupid. I chose this unit because it does everything
(CD, iPhone, Blutooth, etc.), and after reviewing almost every other model, this
is what I decided on based on the ratings.

Bluetooth works good for the most part. Mic was an easy install. Ran it through
the cracks in my dash so it's completely invisible. The only issues I have run
into is that the unit doesn't seem to want to auto-connect to my Android 100
percent of the time. I'd say it's more like half the time it auto-connects correctly.
This could be caused by my phone though. Also, once it is synced up, the
phone book entries take a really long time to show up on the unit. Sometimes I
have to scroll down a ways before any of them start showing up. Minor
annoyance, but it still works. The BT audio options and settings are good with
gain, mic, and noise reduction adjustments.

iPhone control is perfect for what I need. The search function is OK. I typically
use Artist search and choose the first letter of the artists name and then just
scroll down with my remote a few spots. I can also stream Pandora from my
iPhone and Android over the bluetooth audio. The quality suffers slightly, but
that's to be expected. Still sounds plenty good enough.

      Great Unit

Written By DJ, CA on Sunday, March 13, 2011

This is a really nice unit with many features. As other reviewers have noted, the
menus can be a bit confusing. Once you set up the deck, you won't need to
access most of them though so it really isn't that big of a deal. BT sound
      comes in nice an clear.

One thing I want to note is that this unit does work, through USB, with the
iphone 4 and it does charge it. Crutchfield says it's not supported. I'm using an
iphone 4 with the iOS 4.3. No problems at all.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit is awesome! I have read other reviews that say the menus are difficult to
navigate. I was able to figure out most of the functions without looking at the manual.
The sound quality is great, the interface is great. The installation went very smooth. I
      would highly recommend this unit.
