Alpine

Who needs a powered subwoofer?

To produce bass, you need a sub, an enclosure, and an amplifier, and it can be little tricky to match them all up. A powered sub eliminates all the hassle, as the manufacturer designs the enclosure to house the sub and amp together. This all-in-one solution is especially useful in smaller vehicles, where there's no room to mount a separate amp, or in any vehicle where you need every bit of cargo space. Powered subs range from small, flat boxes that fit under your seat to larger boxes that go in your trunk.

Our take on the Alpine PLT-5
LAT Subwoofer System

by Ken Nail
Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Revolutionary technology, massive sound, and Alpine — they just go together. Alpine's LAT Subwoofer Systems utilize cutting-edge Linear Array Transducer (LAT) technology, which uses a series of small woofers to create sound output equal to that of a much larger subwoofer — while using much less space.

The PLT-5 Subwoofer System's subwoofer array consists of six 5-inch cones that provide the same bass punch as a pair of 10" subs. Alpine houses the subs in a super-efficient Ultra Reflex enclosure and matches them up to a highly-efficient 250-watt digital amplifier. The result? Clean, pounding bass from an enclosure that will fit behind the front seat of most full-size regular cab pickups.

The PLT-5 incorporates speaker- and preamp-level inputs, and features a low-frequency filter for matching the bass output to your system. A remote bass knob gives you fingertip control of the variable bass boost.

Highlights:

  • amplified subwoofer system with Linear Array Transducer (LAT) technology
  • six 5-inch woofer cones in Ultra Reflex subwoofer box
  • Alpine PDX 250-watt RMS digital amplifier
  • variable low-pass filter (50-200 Hz, 24 dB/octave)
  • bass boost (0-12 dB @ 45 Hz) with wired remote control
  • subsonic filter (15 Hz, 24 dB/octave)
  • phase control (0, 180 degrees)
  • speaker- and preamp-level inputs
  • 8-gauge power and ground leads recommended — wiring not included with system
  • 21-5/8"W x 13-3/8"H x 8-7/8"D1 x 6-3/16"D2
  • warranty: 1 year
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

Features

Product Overview: The PLT-5 features Linear Array Transducer (LAT) technology, which uses a series of small woofers to create sound output equal to that of a much larger subwoofer. The subwoofer array consists of six 5-inch cones that provide the same bass punch as a pair of 10" subs. The woofers are housed in a small Ultra Reflex enclosure and powered by a 250-watt RMS amplifier.

Low-pass Filter: The built-in low-pass filter can be adjusted from 50 to 120 Hz.

Bass Boost: The amplifier features a 0 to +12dB bass boost, centered at 45 Hz.

Remote Bass Control Knob: You can control the bass level from the driver's seat with the supplied Remote Bass Control knob. The control knob connects to the amplified subwoofer via the supplied remote bass cable. The control knob has the following dimensions: W=1.794" (including mounting flanges), H=1.008", D=2.352" (including knob).

Phase Control: The subwoofer's phase control allows you to adjust the phase of the subwoofer's output relative to the system. If the bass sounds muddy or unclear, adjusting the phase control can sometimes strengthen the bass "attack."

Controls

Left Side:

  • Gain Control: rotary control that allows you to adjust the level of the subwoofer
  • Crossover Control: rotary control that allows you to adjust the low-pass filter from 50 to 120 Hz
  • Bass EQ: rotary control that allows you to adjust the bass boost from 0 to +12 dB
  • Phase Control: switch that allows you to set the subwoofer's phase to 0°  or 180°
  • Input: switch that allows you to choose the speaker-level or RCA-level inputs

Connections

Left Side:

  • BATT: set-screw terminal that accepts up to 4-gauge wire
  • REM: set-screw terminal that accepts up to 8-gauge wire
  • GND: set-screw terminal that accepts up to 4-gauge wire
  • Remote: phone-type jack for use with the supplied Remote Bass Control knob
  • Speaker-level Input: 4-pin jack for use with the supplied speaker-level input harness

I am a Nashville recording artist.

Written By Kris, Nashville, TN. on Wednesday, August 13, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am a Nashville recording artist and after making my demo's it is very critical to hear ever detail. After talking to a Crutchfield advisor about my limited amout of space and not wanting an overkill on bass he recomended this Alpine sub. I was impressed, I mean for a tiny sub it filled the gap! Now if your wanting your friends down the road to hear you then maybe this is not what you need. But if it is in a limited space and ease of installing and a fair amount of low end this maybe your ticket. I know what good sound sounds like after recording five albums and eight "World Top Ten" Indie hit songs, buy it and try it for 30 days and I'll bet you will want to keep it like I did!

Big things in small packages

Written By Michael, Alabama on Saturday, August 09, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I own a 2000 eclipse. I have had a 400 watt sub in the car, and it did sound really good. But, I added a RF P450.4, RF250.2, a set of infinity tweeters, replaced the door speakers with Inifinity 6012s, replaced the rear speakers with JL Audio TR690xi, added a set of 4" Inifinity to the rear panels, added a cap, and using an Alpine 9847 head unit. All of these highs required an upgrade to the lows. I bought this item because of its size, and I was not expecting it to be so powerful. It really is equivalent to a set of 10s. It may not be as boomy as a set of 10s made by JL or RF, but it is way more powerful than a 400 watt max ten inch mounted in a ported box. The key to these subs is the break-in period. It says in the manual to allow 20 hours of playtime before you can really turn them up. This is pretty accurate, because they sounded like junk when they initially started, but after 10 hours of playtime, they are now sounding amazing. I highly recommend these. You will be amazed by the volume of sound and the actual size of this item.

Alpine PLT-5
LAT Subwoofer System

Written By Chris, Kingsport,Tn on Monday, August 04, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am running an alpine head unit into a 200 watt infinity amp to power a set of 5 and 1/4 inch polk component speakers. My son convinced me that I need to add a sub for no system is complete w/out one. I choose the Alpine PLT 5 because my infinity would not support a sub so the PLT combo sub/amp was perfect. All I had to do was feed out of the infinity w/patch cord to the PLT 5.
The PLT 5 is Great! As well I got it @ the scratch and dent price which was great. I highly recommend the PLT 5. I also highly recommend Crutchfield!

Fantastic system!!

Written By Anonymous, Cleveland, Ohio on Thursday, July 24, 2008

I highly recommend this unit. I had the Bazooka BTA10200 in my Dodge Quad Cab and it doesn't come close to this Alpine PLT-5. Loud clean and crisp bass vibrating all my mirrors inside and out. The remote control is also a huge plus enabling me to adjust the bass depending on the music. The units design is more in line with the vehicle interior as well. The unit has some weight to it (47 lbs.) which also increases confidence in the design.
Way to go Alpine and Crutchfield!

Awesome

Written By Mitchellbm, Broken Arrow, OK on Sunday, July 20, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I drive a regular cab pick up and wanted something to spice up the factory sound. I was very skeptical of this sub box, as most powered sub boxes dont perform as advertised. After much research, I took a chance and bought the PLT-5. Install was a snap and only took 30 minutes. HOLY COW, this subs really thumps! I was not expecting the output of this small package. I'm a rocker and this box is perfect. Very tight bass response. This box also put out really nice low frequencies too! I have had many systems in my day and for the money, this system is by far the best! Highly recommended. Also, dont buy from anywhere else. ALWAYS buy from Crutchfield! Their customer service is unbeatable! Thanks Crutchfield!

Very suprising to say the least!

Written By Civicrunner07, Louisville KY on Monday, July 14, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit in search of some much needed bass for my system just so that I could limit the excessive bass overpowering and distorting my speakers, (6-1/2 Pioneer Premieres in the doors, 6x9 Boston acoustics SXs in the rear) What I got was a little box that shook my seats! I have never been a fan of overpowering bass, mids and highs have always come first and this little box matches my system up PERFECT! I also installed a Kenwood KDC - X791 so that I could have a crossover to filter bass, with this powering my fronts and my pioneer 75x2 amp going to my 6x9s, it sounds amazing. One thing I love is that though there is full bass in my car (98 Civic) outside, it doesn't have the sonorous boom that 12's carry with them, overall I would HIGHLY recommend this unit to anyone who is looking to add that little shove to their system, it sounds great with continuous bass found in Rap, and with punchy notes in Rock and Country. Also very small and sharp looking! Very neat to watch the LAT system work. A final aspect that I liked was the simplicity, all in one, no component sub, amp and box separation, just one small enclosure. Oh and how could I forget..... THE PRICE!! Well done Alpine!

Alpine PLT-5
LAT Subwoofer System

Written By Mike, Rockaway, NJ on Sunday, July 13, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Really good sub for the price. Sounds very nice, but I expected more base out of it. I thought it's going to sound a little bit stronger, but it could be just a personal opinion. Other than that there are no problems or complains. Crutchfield was great at everything: customer service, delivery, choice or product, etc. Definitely would recommend to my family members and friends.

Rocking my 08 Xb

Written By God, Lawrence,KS on Saturday, July 12, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was a bit skeptical at what kind of bass this little unit would put out, but after installing and tweaking it, I am amazed. I used to have one of the old Kicker Solo-Baric 15's in a sealed box, and while this
can't compare with that, it does a pretty darned good job. Installation in my 08 Xb was easy, it takes up very little space, and it does what I needed it to do: Put some low-end sound in my system. The price it's going for now can't be beat as
well, as an amp alone or subs in a box would cost this much, but this has it all for that price. Very
impressed, and I recommend you get it while it lasts.

Worth the money now

Written By Nick, Rockford, MI on Tuesday, July 08, 2008

I bought this for my wifes Saturn Vue. I installed an Alpine head unit with
all Infinity speakers. It was a toss-up between this PLT-5 or the Infinity
Basslink. She chose this cuz she thought it looked better. She listens to
alot of pop and hip-hop with long bass lines. As with all bandpass boxes
this does well with this type of music and she is very happy with it. For
only 200 watts and it's small size it does push out alot of bass. Fills the
small SUV very well and then some but just can't produce that tight bass
that a sealed sub can. I have a GTI with monsoon and the same Alpine
head unit. I am going to go with the Infinity basslink in my ride in hopes of
getting tighter bass that my door speaker can't produce. I always use
Alpine head units and Infinity speakers and even have Infinity's in my
house. In my opinion Alpine makes good stuff and this little guy holds it's
own and you can't beat the price.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

this sub is great...I installed a complete new system of speakers and head unit in my 87 camaro and this thing rocks!!! You can hear the bass decently outside the car...mind you it's a hatchback...but it thumps like two 10s easily. I would recommend this to at least a hatchback install, don't know how it would sound in a trunk but it couldn't sound that bad if it sounds that good in a hatchback.

Excellent Product!

Written By Sherwood, Indianapolis, IN on Monday, July 07, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this powered subwoofer in my 2000 Toyota Tundra Access Cab.
It is behind the passenger seat on the floor. With the seat all the way
back, it is a tight fit, but it works. This is the solution that I have needed to
finally get some balance in the sound from my system. I listen to XM and my
iPod as well as FM. It definitely provides the low end that was impossible to
obtain from just the speakers in the doors. I'm very happy with this unit.
For the price, it was a steal!

Great bang fo CF

Written By Greg, Louisville on Wednesday, July 02, 2008

Totally love this sub, It is pretty small but does a great job of filling the MUCH needed bass in my GTI without taking up the limited cargo room.
Like most bandpass boxes this seems to have its sweet spot of notes but I'm still upgrading the rest of the system and the constant tweaking is coming together.
Get it while it's cheap!!
Unless you're into SPL drags I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Just What I Was Looking For...

Written By Cody, Bryan, TX on Wednesday, June 25, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this
unit in my 2000
Hyundai Tiburon last
week. I've had my
fair share of subs
through the years
(one 10", two 10"s,
and a few 12"s) but
the install always
took up too much of
my trunk space and
weighed too much for
my liking. This was
such an easy
install, takes up
VERY little space,
sounds great for
it's size, not too
heavy... It just
impressed me all
around.

I would have to say
it falls short of
the "comparable to
two 10"s" statement,
but only by a
little. It is more
than enough for any
compact car or truck
IMO, you're not
going to be winning
dB competitions, but
that's not what this
unit is for. I have
the unit installed
in the rear hatch
and I can feel it up
front NO PROBLEM.
The uniqueness of
this unit as also an
attention grabber
for me, because the
LAT technology is
very cool stuff. And
you CANT beat the
responsiveness you
get from six 5"
subs. I'm very
satisfied.

Alpine PLT-5

Written By Rob, Prescott, Az on Saturday, June 21, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this in a 1999 Chevy Astro van with stock speakers in the front doors, and after market 6x9's in the rear. What a difference in sound!! It is now well rounded out, with no dead spots on the low end. It's has met my expectations and more. Plus, you can't beat the price.

The controls are easy to access and use, and very adjustable to the listening environment.

If you want the "super thumper", this probably is not for you. If you want good clean sound from the low end, I highly recommend this product.

Great but shakey install

Written By Ryan, Crawford, TX on Saturday, June 21, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off I want to say that for the price this is a great deal. That is why I bought this. I was initially looking at a Bazooka tube, but saw the dimensions for this and decided to pay the extra money for it. As far as I can tell this thing has met all of my expectations except an easy install.

I have a '97 Chevy Cheyenne wich is a pretty small truck. Well the sub just fit behind my seat but when I went to anchor it to the cab I found that the screws that came with the sub were way to short for the dip in metal that I was forced to put it on. Well one tank of gas and $1.20 latter I had the screws to put it in.

I would buy this product again.

Alpine PLT-5
LAT Subwoofer System

Written By Anonymous, Richmond on Saturday, June 07, 2008

I tried installing this speaker in an 2001 F350 crew cab. This review is to let others know that this subwoofer will not properly fit behind the rear seat of these trucks. Close but about an inch or less too little room. This is with the tool container removed.

I could force the rear seat upright but the seat latch would be stressed and the rubberized exterior of the speaker would be damaged.

For these body styles the MTX Thunderform or JL Audio Stealths custom enclosures will be the best bet for a good fit. Both are quite pricey but should eliminate any fit interferences. An alternative is a smaller tube Bazooka. I am shopping for a powered subwoofer to prevent the additional work of installing and hiding an amplifier.

PERFECT for the price

Written By chris, KY on Thursday, June 05, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This sub rocks!
It really does need a compact location like a truck extended cab or down in your Prii wheel well under the rear cargo floor (don't expect it's full potential out in an open space like the rear cargo of a hatch back).
In the right spot this sub BUMPS! Makes my temples vibrate. Makes the mirror shake to 0 visibility.
Drivers next to you won't feel it, but with your windows down they will hear the deep tones from your car. Inside YOU WILL FEEL IT as well as hear it.
I recommend it for the price it's the best option in powered subs.
So worth it for the price!!! I mean 'cmon, it's free shipping to you and free shipping back if your not satisfied. If your considering this one - BUY IT

WOW!!! MASSAVE bass in a small package!

Written By Will, Vancouver, WA on Wednesday, June 04, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was very skeptical about the LAT before I heard it. Seriously, just look at the thing...it's so unconventional compared to other set ups. I installed it tonight and it literally blew me out of my shoes. The thing is no bigger then a single twelve in a small truck box but it easily bumps like a strong twelve or a pair of tens. The bass is extremely loud, clear, and quick. It can handle anything you throw at it.

I installed it in my Jeep Grand Cherokee and the bass rattles all my mirrors to the point that I can't even see out of them. The thing is purely AMAZING! I am so happy that I bought the LAT. It takes up no room, bumps hard, and looks really really cool.

I would recommend the LAT to anyone looking to add seat and mirror shaking bass to their ride.
