Features
Body Only:
This package includes the camera body only and
does not include a lens.
Recording Media:
The EOS 5D records images on a Type I or Type II CompactFlash Card.
Note:
A CompactFlash Card is not supplied with the camera.
Image Recording Format:
The camera records still images in JPEG
and RAW formats.
Viewfinder: The EOS 5D uses an
eye-level pentaprism viewfinder with a dioptric adjustment knob. By adjusting
the diopter to suit your eyesight (with or without eyeglasses), the viewfinder
image will look clearer. During self-timer or remote switch (optional) operation
when your eye does not cover the viewfinder eyepiece, stray light may enter the
eyepiece and affect the exposure when the image is captured. To prevent this,
you can use the eyepiece cover to cover the eyepiece.
LCD Monitor: The 2.5" color LCD
monitor on the back of the camera enables you to review and select recorded
images and adjust various menu settings. The LCD monitor cannot be used as a
viewfinder to shoot.
12.8 Megapixel full-frame CMOS Sensor:
The EOS 5D's full-frame CMOS sensor records 4,368 x 2,912 pixels
(12.8 Megapixels). The same size as a 35mm image on a traditional camera, the
sensor operates without a conversion factor. This new CMOS sensor provides
smooth, high-resolution images similar to the EOS-1Ds Mark II but in a more
compact body. Two automatic noise reduction features maximize the effectiveness
of the EOS 5D's on-chip noise reduction. Noise reduction can be activated when
noise is detected or it will simply come into play on any exposure of 1 second
or longer.
DIGIC II Image Processor:
The EOS 5D's new 12.8 Megapixel sensor is driven by the
revolutionary DIGIC II Image Processor for unprecedented performance and image
quality. Thanks to the DIGIC II Image Processor, the EOS 5D is capable of
shooting up to 3 frames-per-second for up to 60 JPEG or 17 RAW images. The
information captured by the sensor is processed and assembled into images of
exceptional clarity and resolution. You can expect precise, natural colors,
spot-on white balance and speed in any number of lighting situations. By
handling larger volumes of image data, the DIGIC II Image Processor also
contributes to lower power consumption.
Image Resolution/Compression:
You can choose from the following resolutions: Large (4368 x 2912 pixels),
Medium (3168 x 2112 pixels), and Small (2496 x 1664 pixels). For each
resolution, you can set the compression to Fine or Normal.
RAW File Format:
The RAW file format records the image data as captured by the camera CMOS sensor
without further processing. RAW images are compressed, but the compression is
reversible so that a high-quality image can be obtained from the decompressed
file without any loss of image quality. Whenever you use the EOS 5D, you can
choose to have it record RAW files or JPEG files alone, or you can record RAW
files and a JPEG files simultaneously.
Shooting Modes:
The EOS 5D offers the following shooting modes:

Advanced 9-point
Autofocus System: In addition to 9 different AF points
for locking focus on subjects, even if they are not in the center of the
composition, the EOS 5D features 6 Supplemental points around the center AF
point that help to ensure an even greater degree of focus accuracy when tracking
a moving subject. This feature is significant for sports photographers, as well
as anyone who needs to keep focus locked on an unpredictable subject. The
Supplemental AF points are not displayed in the viewfinder, and they cannot be
manually selected. However, they are used in AI Servo AF mode when the EOS 5D is
set for automatic focusing point selection.
AF Modes:
The camera automatically employs one of 3 AF systems to let you seize every
photo opportunity with fast, accurate focus. One-Shot AF is suited for still
subjects, while AI Servo AF is for moving subjects. AI Focus AF switches from
One-Shot AF to AI Servo AF automatically if the subject starts moving.
ISO Speed: Manually, you can
adjust the ISO speed between ISO 100 and 1600 in 1/3-stop increments. When
shooting in Full Auto mode, the ISO speed is automatically set between 100 and
400 in 1-stop increments to suit the shooting conditions. When ISO Expansion is
turned on, you can also select an ISO speed of 50 or 3200.
White Balance: You can choose
from the following white balance settings:
-
Auto: the
camera sets the white balance automatically according to shooting conditions
-
Daylight:
for recording outdoors on a
bright day
-
Shade:
counters strong blue tones in open shade on sunny days
-
Cloudy/Twilight/Sunset:

-
Tungsten: for
incandescent illumination
-
White Fluorescent
Light: eliminates typical green color casts
-
Flash:
a starting point for studio strobes and Canon Speedlites
-
Custom: with
custom white balance, you shoot a white object that will serve as the
standard for the white balance. By selecting this image, you import its
white balance data for the white balance setting.
-
Color Temperature:
you can numerically set the white balance's color temperature
-
White Balance
Correction: you can
correct the standard color temperature for the white balance setting
-
White Balance Auto
Bracketing: with just one
shot, three images having a different color tone can be recorded
simultaneously. Based on the current white balance mode's standard color
temperature, the white balance setting can be changed from 0 to +/-3 stops
in whole-stop increments.
Color Space:
The color space refers to the range of reproducible colors. With this camera,
you can set the color space for captured images to sRGB or Adobe RGB. For normal
images, sRGB is recommended. In the Full Auto mode, sRGB will be set
automatically.
Exposure Compensation:
Exposure compensation is used
to alter the camera's standard exposure setting. You can make the image look
lighter (increased exposure) or darker (decreased exposure). The exposure
compensation amount can be set up to +/-2 stops in 1/3-stop increments.
Auto Exposure
Bracketing: With auto exposure
bracketing (AEB), the camera automatically changes the exposure level up to +/-2
stops in 1/3-stop increments for three successive shots.
AE Lock:
AE lock enables you to lock the exposure at a different place from the point of
focus. After locking the exposure, you can recompose the shot while maintaining
the desired exposure level. This feature is useful for backlit and spotlighted
subjects.
Bulb Exposures:
When bulb is set, the shutter is open during the time you keep pressing the
shutter button fully. Bulb is useful when a long exposure is necessary for
capturing night scenes, fireworks, the night sky, etc.
Metering Modes:
You can select from the following metering modes:
- Evaluative Metering: This
is the camera's standard metering mode suited for most subjects even under
backlit conditions. After detecting the main subject's position, brightness,
background, front and back lighting conditions, etc., the camera sets the
proper exposure.
- Partial Metering: This is
particularly effective when the background is much brighter than the subject
due to backlighting, etc. This method uses a center area of approximately 8%
of the screen.
- Spot Metering: This is for
metering a specific part of the subject or scene. The metering is weighted
at the center covering about 3.5% of the viewfinder area.
- Centerweighted Average
Metering: The metering is weighted at the center and then averaged for
the entire scene.
Continuous Shooting Mode:
During continuous shooting mode, the camera stores approximately 3 images per
second. The maximum burst during continuous recording depends on the image
recording quality:

automatically so that they are displayed upright during playback.
Image Review:
The image can be displayed on the LCD
monitor immediately after you shoot. The review time can be set to 2 seconds, 4
seconds, 8 seconds, or Hold, which keeps the image displayed on the LCD monitor.
Auto Playback:
You can view all images on the Compact
Flash Card one-by-one with the Auto Playback function. Each image is displayed
on the LCD monitor for approximately 3 seconds.
Index Playback: This feature
allows you to view nine images at once on the LCD monitor so that you can search
for an image quickly.
Image Magnification: When
viewing a still picture in single image playback mode, you can magnify the image
from 1.5x to 10x.
Rotating Images:
You can rotate an image by 90 or 270 degrees clockwise in the LCD monitor.
Auto Power Off: To save battery
power, the camera turns off automatically after a period of non-operation. The
Auto Power Off time can be set to 1 minute, 2 minutes, 4 minutes, 8 minutes, 15
minutes, or 30 minutes.
Note: The
Auto Power Off function will not activate in Auto Playback Mode.
Direct Print Function:
Using the supplied USB cable, you can connect this camera directly to a
CP-series printer that supports the Direct Print function. You can also connect
the camera directly to certain Canon Bubble Jet printers. In this way, you can
make prints directly from the camera without ever having to hook it up to a
computer.
PictBridge Printing
Capability: Using the supplied USB
cable, you can connect this camera directly to a PictBridge compliant printer.
PictBridge is a standard that allows you to connect a PictBridge compliant
camera directly to a PictBridge compliant printer and make prints, regardless of
brand.
Exif Print (Exif 2.21): The
Canon EOS 5D conforms to "Exif Print", a worldwide standard. Vital camera
settings (such as: exposure mode, white balance, exposure time) and scene data
are recorded to the image file when it is captured. Printers compatible with "Exif
Print" are able to use this information to produce high quality photographs,
exactly the way they were intended at the time of capture. This intelligent
communication process also allows the printer to correct for poor lighting or
mistakes, resulting in photos that can be even better than the originals.
DPOF Print
Settings: On the CompactFlash Card, you
can select which image or images you want to print and how many copies you want.
This is convenient for printing images all at once, on optional Canon direct
print function compliant printers, on PictBridge compliant printers, or at
participating photo labs.
Optional AC Power:
With the optional ACK-E2 AC
adapter kit, you can connect the camera to a household power outlet and not
worry about the battery becoming exhausted.
Optional Lens
Compatibility: The EOS 5D is compatible with all Canon lenses in the
EF lineup (except EF-S lenses), ranging from 14mm Ultra-Wide to 600mm Super
Telephoto lenses.
Optional Flash
Compatibility: The EOS 5D features Canon's E-TTL II flash
metering system introduced with the EOS-1D Mark II. E-TTL II provides
consistently accurate flash exposure from shot to shot. Canon's Speedlite 580EX
and 430EX are perfectly suited to the EOS 5D. They include an AF-assist Beam,
which works in conjunction with the EOS 5D's focusing system, and automatically
sends color temperature information to the camera when the flash fires, for more
accurate color rendition with flash photography
