What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Our take on the Sony Xplod XS-L104P5B

by Dominic Devito

Sony's made a sub that sounds as interesting as it looks. The five-sided design of the XS-L104P5B 10" sub keeps the polypropylene cone stiff and helps to reduce standing waves found in round subs that can negatively affect bass output and cause distortion. A thick rubber surround keeps the cone properly centered to create the kind of bass that'll draw a crowd.

The XS-L104P5B also draws attention for its exceptional power-handling ability — it'll devour up to 330 watts RMS, without taking a serious bite out of your savings. Place this bruiser in a sealed or ported box for dynamic lows, or pick up a pair for twice the thunder in your vehicle.

Highlights:

  • 10" 4-ohm subwoofer
  • five-sided polypropylene cone with rubber surround
  • power range: 80-330 watts RMS (1,200 watts peak power)
  • frequency response: 18-2,500 Hz
  • sensitivity: 88 dB
  • top-mount depth: 5-15/16"
  • sealed box volume: 0.78 cubic feet
  • ported box volume: 0.91 cubic feet
  • Recommended Q-Logic Box Type: 1, 2
  • warranty: 1 year
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

    Features
    Enclosure

    Features

P5 One Piece, Cap-less Cone: This woofer has a five-sided polypropylene one-piece, cap-less cone. This design stiffens the cone and increases rigidity, resulting in lower distortion and higher power handling. The five-sided cone also cuts down on standing waves on its surface because none of the five sides is parallel to another.

Stroke Stabilizer Rubber Surround: The rubber surround provides enhanced cone control and flexibility, as well as durability. "Hash Marks" in the surround provide added stability.

Voice Coil: The Sony xs-L104P5B features a single 4-ohm voice coil.

Power Handling: The Sony subwoofer can handle up to 300 Watts RMS and 1,200 Watt Peak with a sensitivity rating of 88 dB.

Frequency Response: The woofer can produce frequencies between 18 and 2,500 Hz.

Binding Posts: The gold-plated binding posts will accept bare wire up to 12 Gauge, pin connectors, spade lugs and banana plugs. The binding posts are spaced too far apart to accept dual banana plugs.

Enclosure Compatibility: This woofer can provide extended bass in sealed and ported enclosures (please see the "Enclosure" section for more information on the recommended enclosures).

    Enclosure

Sealed Box Volume: Sony recommends mounting this woofer in a sealed enclosure with an internal volume of 0.78 cu/ft.

Ported Box Volume: Sony recommends mounting this woofer in a ported enclosure with an internal volume of 0.91 cu/ft with one 3" Diameter x 11.125" Long port.

Just one of these in a small enclosure (ported) accompanied by a Sony X-
Plod 600 watt amp. All I can say is what I can't hear you, this one sub
rocked the car so loud the rear view mirror vibrated off. I couldn't imagine
having two of these but it's a thought for the future. Don't let the low price
fool you these are as comparable to high end/price subs. I highly
recommend this sub if you are on a budget.

    Mighty Thump

Written By Brandon, Maine on Monday, August 24, 2009

I got a Pioneer reciever bass on 0. 2 of these in a bass slammer enclosure slapped in my trunk facing upwards, towards the sky. I have a Kenwood amp (250 watts each) the input sensitivy on max, and the bass boost on 6dB. My reciever goes to 60, I turn these up to 55, and i can barely see strait. All my mirrors shake, and I get some massage. The bad boys are underestimated, They Slap hard. Im heard by my friends about beofre I even get to my house.
You should get these for the price, you really can't go wrong anyway you look at it.

I custom installed all of my components in my 1999 Ford Taurus SHO edition.
(Polk Audio db1001 tweeters; Polk Audio MM571 mid spkers; Sony xplod "Special Edition" 60w x4 amp; Sony xplod 2002GT 1300/1 amp. I acheived
139Db with two of these at a competition in Florida and won SQ contest!
    Sony's are underestimated .... period!

i originaly bought these subs to give me more bass over some old tens that i had and they did just that they sound great up to a point but in my opinion they distort to easy when really trying to turn the bass up...theyre good for the money but you do honestly "get what you pay for!"........i moved on to the boston g5 subs with a 1000 watt amp BIG DIFERENCE!! HUGE!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

after spending some hard earned money on a whole new stereo for my truck, i couldnt wait to see how this thing sounded. i have this 10" sub in Q logics type 1 sealed box powered by sonys xm 1s amp. i also ordered a head unit at the same time since i had only replaced the speakers up to this point. so after splurging and spending a few hours installing everything, it was time for the sound test.....sounded cleeeaannn! played a variety of music at first just to get a feel for how to set it up. then dialed it in with music i listen to regularly. punk and metal really shine as the sub seems to be waiting for that kick drum to hit. like your seeing the band in concert. mids shine through nicely as well. can't forget about those bass guitar lines. i strongly recommend this setup. for the money, it cant be beat. especially if you have a small enclosed area like in my gmc sonoma ext cab. there's enough power to shake all your rear view mirrors without being obnoxious at intersections. get yourself a quality 4 guage wiring kit and you'll be set. do it do it!

    Wahoo!

    Excellent!

Great sub, makes lots of boom, relatively cheap, good quality, saved extra money by buying scratch and dent model. Sub retail box was a little mashed but the sub looks perfect. Went with the 10 cuz I wanted a little more low end than my old RF 8". I also wanted good response cuz I listen to some christian Heavy Metal w/ a double bass - The sub is in a sealed .75 cf box, with a kicker 200.2 amp running 4 ohm mono ( 200x1). The gain on the amp is on 3 (very low) the boost is on +4 (also very low) and the sub is wonderfully filling the lowend. With all the extra power I could be rather obnoxious if I want to be.

Very pleased, and as always crutchfield support is superCool, they helped me with my amp wiring even though I didn't buy it from them.

Excellent bass for the price. Looks awesome and sounds even better. The capless design that Sony has now, allows the sub to have more bass. I would recommend this product to everyone. Hats off to Sony.
