The Audioengine W1 (AW1) lets you make a convenient wireless connection between any two components where you'd normally use a stereo RCA or mini patch cable. This two-part system includes a powerful wireless Sender and a companion Receiver. Connect the Sender to your portable music player via the included stereo minijack cable, or plug it into your computer's USB port. Then connect the Receiver's stereo minijack output to your audio system or powered speakers.

Powered by USB — one adapter included
Both the Sender and Receiver are powered via their USB connections. One AC-to-USB power adapter is included in the package. This is perfect when you're using the system to send audio from your computer, because the Sender can get its power from the USB port. It's also perfect when using the system to wirelessly connect your music source to the Audioengine 5 powered speakers, which feature a handy top-mounted USB power output. Other AC-to-USB power adapters — such as the one that comes with most iPods® — can be used for applications where you need two adapters.

    Features

    Overview: The AW1 package includes a Sender (transmitter) and Receiver; the system is designed to deliver an audio signal wirelessly between two components. This system will work in many different applications, including (but not limited to) a computer sending audio to powered speakers, a computer sending audio to a stereo or A/V receiver, an iPod or other portable player sending audio to the Audioengine A5 powered speakers (the A5 is specifically mentioned here because it has a USB port to power the AW1 Receiver), and an A/V receiver sending audio to powered surround or second zone speakers.

    Sender: The AW1 Sender is powered through its USB plug; one USB AC power adapter is included with the system to power either the Sender or Receiver. If not powered by the included adapter, the Sender can be powered by a computer, iPod power supply, or numerous other USB power supplies currently available. The audio input is a 3.5mm stereo mini-jack. When used with a computer, the Sender acts as a sound card and receives its audio input through the USB port, so no connection to the mini-jack is necessary.

    Receiver: The AW1 Receiver is powered through its USB plug; one USB AC power adapter is included with the system to power either the Sender or Receiver. If not powered by the included adapter, the Receiver can be powered by Audioengine A5 powered speakers, an iPod power supply, or numerous other USB power supplies currently available. The audio output is a 3.5mm stereo mini-jack; no audio signal is transferred through the USB connection.

    Pairing: The Sender and Receiver in this package are linked together at the factory, so no pairing is necessary. If you have several AW1 systems, multiple Receivers can be paired with each Sender, and vice versa, but each can only communicate with one of the other at a time.

    Transmission: The AW1 transmits uncompressed PCM audio in the 2.4 GHz range using a closed protocol specifically designed for audio. The system avoids interference by constantly monitoring the entire 2.4 GHz spectrum and choosing the channel that can achieve the cleanest transmission. The system detects deteriorating conditions on the current channel and switches if needed in under 20 ms, without any interruption in the audio stream. The AW1 also employs dynamic transmit power control, meaning it transmits with only as much power as required to maintain a clear audio connection. This makes AW1 coexist better with other 2.4 GHz devices, including WLAN, Bluetooth, and other Audioengine wireless devices.

    Works Perfectly - sounds great

    I use this to connect my computer to my household stereo. I stream music from an on-line service (Mog) to my computer - then I can play it anywhere in the house via the connection to the stereo.

    It works perfectly. The initial setup took about 5 minutes. I plugged the transmitter into the computer USB port. I plugged the receiver into some RCA jacks on the stereo amplifier. It began working immediately.

    The downside was that it disabled the PC sound-card - therefore the sound from the desktop PC speakers stopped. I did a simple work-around: - I disabled the USB device via the Windows settings and re-enabled my sound-card. - Took the analog sound cable provided and plugged it into the sound card & into the device. - Sound quality was still excellent. - Desktop PC speakers work, signal to stereo works - I leave everything plugged in all the time
    Pros:
    - Easy setup - good sound quality (clean, no hiss or pops)
    Cons:
    - wish I could use multiple receivers - disable sound from speakers in the PC (without a work-around)

    Wireless audio

    The product worked great right out of the box! The transmitter USB connector was first plugged into the laptop, it installed itself, then I plugged the AC adapter into a wall outlet and a stereo input and the music was there as soon as the amp powered up. I've used this from one room to the next to the garage and outside of the house without a glitch. I just plug it in and it works - just what I was hoping for.

    I was concerned of wireless interference because I have a standard Linksys G router next to the computer on 2.4 GHz. This product was recommended and technical support was offered but not needed. I'm very happy with this purchase.

    Overwhelms WiFi

    I'm trying out the AW1 as a replacement to the Yamaha YBA-10 Bluetooth dock.

    First, the audio quality is fantastic. No distortion, no interference, going from a couch to a media closet about 20 ft away. Unfortunately, I'm beginning to suspect that the sound quality is as great as it is because of a strong signal...a strong signal that totally wiped out my WiFi coverage on the entire floor.

    I have a Netgear 802.11n router, which is only single-band (2.4GHz). When plugged into my laptop, the AW1 seems to completely overwhelm the spectrum nearest my laptop and totally kills the connection, bringing what is typically a 40- 50 megabit connection down to about 300k - a dramatic drop. My wife's laptop, about 15 feet away from me, suffered issues, but not nearly as dramatically. I moved the AW1 to a wall outlet about 5 feet from my laptop and WiFi service resumed to an acceptable level, but still about 50% of what was normal.

    I'm still on the fence as to whether to return this and just get hardwired into the media closet, or to use it as an excuse to upgrade to a 5GHz router.

    This product works great for me. I plugged the USB port sender into my
    computer, plugged the receiver into an electrical outlet, and connected some
    RCA-type cables from the receiver into the "CD input" of my audio receiver. I
    turned everything on, started some music on my computer, and when I selected
    the audio receiver to "CD", the music came out of my stereo system. And it
    sounds great.

    Was looking for way to pump XM online from my PC in one room to a conventional
    stereo aux in- in other room without wire. Seems to work best for me at lower to
    medium stereo volume with PC audio to headphine jack at max.
    ~45ft. through 1 interior wall. Not much comparable product that I could find.

    Interesting concept; failure in implementation; buyer-beware

    Tried the W1 with the Audioengine 5 speakers. Very nice setup for the 60-90" that it
    actually worked. I have a WiFi dense home with two WRT610n routers, a Logitech
    Squeezebox Duet, DECT 6.0 cordless phones, and no baby monitors. The system
    (most of which were purchased through Crutchfield) works like a champ for streaming
    Pandora and Netflix throughout the house. Unfortunately, adding the AW1 to the mix
    failed miserably. Regardless of the source, the pairing would work for the AW1, but
    would drop about one minute later. I tried the minor tips suggested by the Audioengine
    support staff, but to no avail. The connection between sender and receiver got dropped
    regardless if they were 3 feet apart or 60-70 feet apart. Thank goodness for the easy
    returns with Crutchfield!

    I wanted to send stereo audio from my cable box and CD player to a Sony receiver in
    another room. After trying 2 other products, which failed, I tried the Audioengine W1. It
    worked flawlessly. During pauses of audio the queiting is dead silence. Excellent product.
