Polk Audio

Why choose bookshelf speakers?

Bookshelf speakers may be small in size, but they can deliver surprisingly big sound. Some ultra-compact models even fit on a desktop. Most are right at home in tight spaces like shelves, so they're usually good choices for your home theater's rear channels. For the best performance, try placing bookshelf speakers on solid speaker stands to help the sound really "open up." If you want full bass impact, add a powered subwoofer and enjoy punchy sound that's as deeply satisfying as that of floor-standing speakers.

Our take on the Polk Audio RTi A1

by Loren Barstow

Potent bookshelf speakers

Treat yourself to detailed, accurate sound with Polk's compact RTi A1 bookshelf speakers. They feature Polk's exclusive Dynamic Balance® drivers for smooth accurate response. Plus the woofers and tweeters undergo careful laser testing to help identify and eliminate unwanted resonances that can hinder a speaker's performance.

RTi A system

Thoughtful cabinet design

Cabinet cross-section

The asymmetric cabinet helps fight vibration for clearer sound.

The RTi A1's newly designed asymmetric cabinets help them deliver rich, clear sound by combating vibration and increasing rigidity. You'll enjoy remarkably clean mids and highs for a well-defined soundstage, along with tight bass. Plus, the cabinet's curved edges give the speaker a polished look, enhanced by a real wood veneer finish.

Great for home theater or stereo music setups

The RTi A1s do a great job with stereo music on their own, or you can team them with a powered subwoofer for even better bass. Or use two pairs as your home theater's front and surround speakers for dynamic, detailed movie sound. For larger rooms, the RTi A1s work perfectly as surrounds in combination with RTi tower front speakers.

Recommended center channel speaker: Polk CSi A4.
Recommended surround speakers: Polk RTi A1.

      Driver Technology

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Polymer Composite Woofers: Each speaker features a 5-1/4" polymer composite woofer for smooth wide-range response with low distortion. For high performance durability, each woofer uses a butyl rubber surround.

Silk/Polymer Tweeters: Each speaker has a 1" silk/polymer dome tweeter that provides clear, detailed highs. Each tweeter features mylar bypass capacitors in the crossovers to extend high frequency response and improve detail and transparency. Each tweeter features low viscosity ferro-fluid cooling with a heat sink on the Neodymium magnet for superior heat dissipation, power handling and reliability.

Frequency Response: The overall frequency response is 50Hz-27kHz and the -3dB frequency response is 60-26kHz.

      Enclosure Design

Damped Asymmetric Hex Laminate (DAHLI) Cabinet Design: All-MDF construction with massive asymmetric cabinet bracing ensures a resonance-free enclosure for accurate sound. The asymmetric design is made from a 6-layer laminate with 5 viscous layers to create the optimal shear damping (OSD) system. The elegant styling aside, curved cabinets not only result in a stronger, more rigid and acoustically inert enclosure, but the curved walls also produce less audible coloration from panel resonances.

Power Port Venting System: Each speaker has a rear-firing Power Port venting system built into its back plate for precise deep bass response. This venting system allows air velocity to slow gradually, vastly reducing air turbulence, and delivering greater bass efficiency than conventional ports.

Acoustic Resonance Control (ARC): Internal cabinet resonance can impart a "thick" character to voices. Polk's patented Acoustic Resonance Control port system overcomes this problem. In addition to the Power Port venting system, each speaker has a front-firing port that is tuned to suppress the internal cabinet resonance, resulting in smooth, natural midrange reproduction.

Anti-Diffraction Grilles: The floating anti-diffraction grilles minimize grille diffraction for spacious, 3-dimensional imaging.

      Connections

Dual 5-Way Binding Posts: Each speaker has two sets of gold-plated 5-way binding posts connected by gold-plated jumpers. Using the dual 5-way binding posts, you can bi-amp or bi-wire the speakers.

      Mounting Options

Wall Mounting: The Power Port back plate on each speaker has a keyhole slot, allowing the speaker to be mounted on the wall using the supplied 2-1/2" wood screws.

Magnetically Shielded: The speakers are magnetically shielded, allowing you to place them near your television without distorting the picture.

Very nice speakers for the price. equal in sound quality to larger more expensive floor models. My limited space required bookshelf style speakers. I've had Polk Audio speakers in the past and I like them. Nice appearance, excellent sound quality

Running the A1s off a Denon AV-1913 on shelves in a large room. Was worried about filling the whole room, but worry no more. I use for TV, movies, Blu-Ray, Pandora, iTunes AirPlay, etc. These babies definitely do the job, along with the subwoofer and in-ceiling Polk MC60s...great sound field.

As mentioned in other reviews, the A1s are bigger than they appear, especially in depth. Something to be aware of. Can certainly re-allocate to the back as surround speakers given further upgrade in the future.

first picked up the CSi center by Polk, my Energy Take system was infuriating when it came to dialogue with some movies. and wouldn't you know it, they're right when they say you need to voice match your fronts with your center. the energy Take fronts didnt quite mesh with the Polk center. picked up the voice matched RTi A1s 2 weeks after the center. the sound is insanely sweet. dialogue is crisp. with the Energy Take system, there was no need to ever go to the movies. now there's no need to go to work either.

      Need break in

Written By Mike D, Twin Cities, MN on Wednesday, February 13, 2013
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Several people have commented that you need to give these speakers time to break in and I agree. Out of the box I was immediately impressed with the quality and the beauty of the Cherry cabinets. When I heard them at first I thought they were shallow and muted in a way. After 10-15 hours of running them they have improved and gotten much crisper and I definitely am impressed. On their own, they don't have enough bass for hard rock, but they perform well on their own with other "softer" genres that don't require pounding bass. I have them paired with JBL Northridge Series towers and JBL Northridge Series sub in a very large open space and they really fill-in the mid-range and highs.. Maybe the A3's would have been better considering the huge room they are in, but that is not a knock on the speakers as much as it is my application for a bookshelf.
      Pros:
Beautiful cabinets. Nice sound. Excellent wall mount system.
      Cons:
On their own they are not enough for a big room or really heavy music. Maybe the bass ports would be more functional if mounted on the wall.

Attractive bookshelf unit. Two pairs of wire attachments is good for attaching multiple sources. Sound quality is ok, but a bit Tunney. I have a lot of Polk speakers. Not sure these measure up, but I'm probably being a bit hard on the small base.
      Pros:
      Attractive unit
      Cons:
      Sound a bit limited.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Once again, Polk doesn't dissappoint. I've been a Polk fan for years, so excuse the bias. If you're familiar with Polk then this review will sound familiar as well. If you're not a fan then you owe it to yourself to give these speakers a listen. Open mids and highs and surprisingly decent bass. My receiver actually thought they were "large" speakers when I ran the microphone aided auto set up (Pioneer VSX 1020). When set up properly, they produce an open, natural image. I have these mated with a CSi A4 center and DSW 550wi sub, which I purchased as a set, due to the current special with the sub discount along with some older T15's that still do well as surrounds. Check the measurements on the CSi A6 center before deciding on that vs the A4. Neither is small, but the A6 is huge, and to be honest, the A4 is impressive in an average sized room (mine is 17' x 22' and the A4 doesn't lack for anything when mated with a powered sub). Just watched Transformers D.O.T.M. after finishing receiver tuning and all I can say is WOW! Great dynamic range with 0 distortion. Music lovers don't worry...these have you covered. Not only did they make Pandora's sound quality level up considerably (not an easy task...), but well recorded CD's sound sublime, with details you probably have been missing. I've auditioned everything from Bose (you're paying for the name...) to Def Tech to Paradigm and Revell. You have to spend a LOT more to beat the RTi series...
      Pros:
Open, natural sound, with great dynamic range. Suitable for movies AND music.
      Cons:
      They're not free...

I have these sitting on a hardwood floor on my second floor office. All I can say is they sound really good. The bass is nice and tight without causing unnecessary vibration. Everything I have played through them has sounded better then I would have imagined (From Gershwin to Madonna to Iron Maiden). The price can't be beaten either.
      Pros:
Fit and finish, sound, and price
      Cons:
      None so far.

I use these as side speakers for my 7:1 system and for the price they can't be beaten, they're well made and aesthetically pleasing too. I run a Marantz SR7007 A/V receiver and my main speakers are by B&W, but the Polks hold up well and for what you pay you get an excellent product.
      Pros:
Good value for money, well made
      Cons:
A little weak at high volume, but for bookshelf units this shouldn't be an issue

      RTiA1's

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had a cheap "R.S.? center speaker" blow on me when I hooked up my Yamaha audio reciever, so I first ordered the Polk CS20 and found I had to replace my right and left front speakers as well. I opted for the RTiA1's and the sound is explosive. When my R.S. powered subwoofer goes I will be back for a Polk powered subwoofer.

      Fantastic for music listening....

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Decided on these after I shopped for a while for a set of bookshelves I could mount in a second room for 100% music listening. I mainly listen to acoustic and electric jazz at low - moderate volumes. Even pushed by a 20 old 55W/channel receiver, these things sound amazing. For the price -looks and sound are impossible to beat. Impressed so much I await the arrival of RTiA3's which will replace old floor (no name) speakers. Also ordered a NAD C356DAC amp to run both of these speakers and am looking forward to the major upgrade in that as well.

Thanks so much Crutchfield for offering a diverse inventory to select from for people who like to listen to music and not HT. No brick and mortar store exists around me any longer that provides a 2 channel music listener such a selection. It seems everyone has migrated to home theater or car audio.
      Pros:
      Sound, looks, price.
      Cons:
      None.

      Great Surround Sound Speakers

Written By Dave, Chicago, IL on Sunday, July 24, 2011
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought these in conjunction with Polk TSi 400's and Polk TSi CS10's to replace my Bose Acumass 10 system. These speakers sound and look great in the cherry color. Although I'm using them as surround sound speakers they are also probably adequate as front speakers with the stands I purchased. I was hoping that with the woofers contained in all these speakers a powered sub-woofer would not be necessary. But if you want the true "theater" sound you need the sub-woofer which I bought at a later date. Strongly recommend these speakers.

Awesome set of bookshelf speakers that have been used for home theater fronts, surrounds and also living room 2 channel stereo system. Very solid construction, excellent build quality, superb performance. Tested Bose, Infinity, Pioneer and Polk came up the winner in this category and price range. Would buy them again in a heartbeat. Effectively no distortion and highest volumes I can handle.

      nice stand mount speakers

Written By Allen, Durham, NC on Tuesday, February 01, 2011
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these speakers to use with a Peachtree Decco 2. I have owned them roughly two months now and have been really pleased with the combination. The upper frequencies and the midrange are clear and life like. There is a surprising amount of low frequency output for its size, but, depending on the recording, there are times I wish I could get a little more support for string bass and the like. I had the larger Rti A1s for a few weeks before I sent them back for these. The RTi A1s had a fuller lower midrange, but there were times that they seemed tto sacrifice upper midrange accuracy for lower bass extension.
One last consideration---these speakers will really sing with good power and a musical signal. I hooked these up to a Yamaha surround receiver and it revealed all of the receiver's inaccuracies. Hooked them back up to the Decco 2 and got a much more musical sound. I wish I could hear these Polks with a Peachtree Nova which has more power. Might be even better than they are.
Aesthetically, these are very attractive speakers sitting on some 24" stands.

Great sound for a good price

Written By Mike, NJ on Saturday, November 27, 2010

I have had these speakers for, about 2 years now and I am very impressed with the high frequency detail and the very rich mid range frequency. The lows are there and very powerful for a bookshelf speaker. I had originally hooked the RTi A1s to my old 30 year old stereo. I heard detail but most of the time the highs were grainy and the lows muddy. But after i bought a NAD C355BEE from Crutchfield, i then heard what the RTi A1s had to offer. The detail and the liquid sound is amazing! No grain or muddy bass. I give credit to both the NAD C355BEE and the Polk RTi A1s, the two make a great pair. Both are worth every dollar$!!!

      Polk Audio RTi A1

Written By Kelly, Alachua, FL on Wednesday, February 10, 2010

Overall these are very nice speakers. I am currently using them as a stereo set and they work well even without a subwoofer. Quality of sound seems to depend on quality of the broadcast and/or input media. Adding to the speakers to make a 2.1 or 5.1 system would most probably improve the output as well. However, these speakers produce a robust sound with very articulate voices and rich music on their own.

      Polk Audio RTi A1

Written By Grant, Eastern Massachusetts on Thursday, October 15, 2009
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got the Polk RTiA1 speakers because of a recommendation. I was told they would provide a clean and natural sound. To an extent they did, but there were some issues.

I compared the RTiA1 to the Boston Acoustics CS26 and my Thiel CS0.5 and Boston Acoustics CR77 speakers. I used a stereo setup to evaluate them.

Out of the box the RTiA1 speakers had a beautiful, though a tad dark, real natural cherry exterior. I have natural cherry living room furniture. They fit in well. They also seemed to be solidly built.

Well it really all comes down to how they sound. The RTiA1 highs were clear and just a tiny bit subdued. Vocals were where the problem came in. There seemed to a small amount a distortion in the lower end of the vocals. Since this was at the lower end, it wasn't noticeable with female vocalists. It was noticeable with male vocalists. It wasn't a big deal, but it was there. Also the vocals were a tad recessed. The bass was clean, clear and well defined.

There are slightly warm speakers, much like my Thiels, to which they compared pretty well. They weren't at the same level as the Thiels, but that's to be expected at this price range. The Boston Acoustics CS26 and CR77 speakers were both more livelily and the vocals were more forward then with the RTiA1s. That being said, the CS26s couldn't match RTiA1s in warmth, imaging ability or clarity.

      Best bookshelf under $500

Written By Mike, Hamilton, New Jersey on Tuesday, September 29, 2009

The RTi A3 has to be one of the best values for under $500. The articulation and transparency of these speakers is nothing short of outstanding. If you listen to classical music you will be amazed as every nuance is captured. My collection of CD's includes Steely Dan's Aja, and Chicago's Chicago Transit Authority, both sound incredible! If you are looking for what might be the best bookshelf speaker for under $500, look no further.
