Polk Audio

Why add a powered subwoofer?

A powered subwoofer gives you bass you can feel as well as hear. Our customers love the depth and impact their subs add to music and movies. We hear comments like "it brings out sounds I didn't know existed in discs I've watched a million times." Powered subwoofers aren't just for big bass that rattles your picture frames; they can also deliver tight, accurate lows. If you haven't shopped for a powered sub in a while, you might be surprised at how small they get. Look for an ultra-compact model if you want to tuck your sub away under an end table or in a corner.

Our take on the Polk Audio PSW125

by Loren Barstow

Add the Polk PSW125 to your home theater or stereo system and prepare for some serious bass punch. Its 12" driver and high-current 150-watt amp add plenty of bottom-end to all of your music, movies, and video games. This sub sports a new, more powerful driver design to deliver deeper, louder, and punchier bass than previous Polk subs. Special circuitry inside the amp and a solid MDF cabinet with internal bracings ensure clean, detailed lows, even when you crank up the volume.

Highlights:

  • bass-reflex (ported) enclosure
  • 150-watt RMS amplifier
  • 12" front-firing driver
  • frequency response 32-225 Hz

Features

Driver: The Polk Audio PSW125 uses a 12" Dynamic Balance composite cone driver for deep, accurate response with low distortion. For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofer utilizes a rubber surround.

Klippel Optimized Woofer: By using a state-of-the-art Klippel Distortion Analyzer, Polk is able to optimize the woofer's motor structure, voice coil alignment and suspension for the best possible performance even at extreme listening levels.

Motor Structure: The PSW125 utilizes a powerful motor structure for a higher BL responses (the measure of the motive force applied to the cone) that results in louder, deeper and punchier bass.

Compression Circuitry: The woofer's Compression Circuitry limits distortion at high volume levels.

Amplifier: The subwoofer is powered by a high-current amplifier producing 150 watts RMS/300 watts dynamic power that supplies clean power for loud bass and a wide dynamic range necessary to recreate a life-like experience in your home.

Enclosure: The PSW125 features a bass-reflex enclosure with non-resonant MDF construction and internal bracing for deep bass impact with superior detail and accuracy. The Polk Audio PSW125 is available in a Black or Cherry finish.

Down-Firing Port: The powered subwoofer's downward firing port allows the woofer to be extremely efficient and provides more bass impact for your home theater experience.

Not Video Shielded: The subwoofer is not magnetically shielded, so it is not recommended to place it next to tube TVs and video monitors. Though LCD, DLP and Plasma televisions are not affected by magnetism you should allow at least 18" of space between the subwoofer and any TV.

Placement: You may place the subwoofer anywhere in your room, but it will perform best when it's on the same side of the room as your system's front speakers. Also, placing the subwoofer near a wall or in a corner will increase its loudness.

Controls

3-Way Power Switch: The subwoofer has a 3-way power switch on the rear panel. You can select Auto, which turns the unit on automatically when an input signal is received and off 15 minutes after the signal stops; On, which keeps the unit on and Standby, which turns the unit off. The LED power indicator glows green when the unit is on and red when the unit is off.

Volume Control: The PSW125 has a rotary volume control to adjust the volume of the subwoofer relative to the other speakers in the system.

Phase Switch: The subwoofer's phase switch allows you to select 0-degrees (normal) or 180-degrees (reverse). If the bass sounds muddy or unclear, toggling the phase control can sometimes strengthen the bass attack.

Low-Pass Filter: The PSW125 offers a continuously variable low-pass filter, adjustable from 60-160 Hz. There is an LFE position for use with the filtered LFE output from a receiver or preamp.

Connections

Line Inputs: The subwoofer has gold plated left and right RCA line level inputs for use with receivers having subwoofer or stereo preamp outputs that do not contain their own low-pass crossover. Using the Line Inputs allows PSW125 to do all the low-pass filtering. If your receiver or processor only has a single subwoofer line output, connect it to the Right line input jack.

LFE In: The right channel RCA input doubles as the LFE input; if your receiver has an LFE output and a built-in crossover, use this input and set the low-pass filter dial to LFE.

Speaker Level Input/Output: The subwoofer has spring clips for the speaker level inputs and outputs. The subwoofer's low-pass filter sends bass frequencies (based on the setting of the filter) to the subwoofer. The speaker level inputs and outputs are shorted together, so the output is not crossed over. You should set you receiver's front speaker setting to Large.

Great Powered Sub

Written By GeneA, North County San Diego, CA on Sunday, June 09, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Max from Crutchfield recommended this as a pair to my 5.1 system running Bose 191 in-wall speakers and a Bose Center Channel Speaker. They are all driven by a Denon 3313CI Receiver. Media/movie room is small-ish ~121 Square Feet and under 1000 cubic feet total so I was concerned about getting something too big. Great recommendation by Max as this powered sub fits nicely AND fills an audio gap in my system perfectly.
Pros:
Great base response and sound. Integrated perfectly with my system and for my media/movie room size.
Cons:
None that I have found.

Big bass, big sound, big.

Written By Mike V., San Antonio, TX on Thursday, May 30, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sub, really shakes the room!
Pros:
Wow! What a rich listening experience. EASY set up, nice ability to adjust power/volume separately from other speakers.
Cons:
This is a large unit--bigger than I expected. Make sure you are looking for something this big before purchasing. Measure the area you intend to place it, to make sure it fits.

Polk PSW 150

Written By John L, Pocono Lake PA on Wednesday, May 22, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Initially I was quite dissapointed with this sub. Base notes had an irritating buz sound. Advised by Crutchfield personel I continued to use the sub and after each use it sounded better. Amazingly it gets better and better with very realistic base notes. My old Polk RT25Is are great but at times their highs were too crisp. The addition of the sub has eliminated the crispy sound of my higher frequency speakers. Together they sound simply awsome,so much so I have avoided a lot of required chores and cannot stop listening to the two working together. Vinyl records sound the best so far with this sub.I have not tried this set up on movies for surround sound. Classical music and classic rock sound great. Its the first time strings on classic music have sounded realistic and very sweet.I just dont know how to rate them for its the first time I have ever had a large sub (old sub was small) hooked into my system which is vintage Harmon Kardon Amp and Pre Amp.
Pros:
Sound is very realistic. In fact so realistic that along with my vintage RT25Is you feel your at the actual performance.
Cons:
This sub will not blow you off your couch as some do that I have heard. May be too mellow for some especially with movies.

A real thumper!

Written By John K, Fort Myes, FL on Tuesday, May 14, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Hard to beat this subwoofer at this price range. Have it connected with an all Polk system (TSi500's, TSiCS20 center, and OMW5 surrounds) paired with a Denon AVR2313 and it really shakes a pretty large room (17'x25') but without sounding muddy.
Pros:
Great match to Pol system, clean bass response, attractive cabinet
Cons:
pretty large footprint, kind of stands out in room

Great for me.

Written By RussR, Cincinnati on Saturday, January 05, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought a scratch and dent one and some new Audioengine A2s for my computer. One corner of the woofer was smushed up and one foot had broken off, but the foot glued back on easily. The packing was sparse, so perhaps the speaker was further damaged in shipment. After buying some adapter cables to T off the computer audio, I fired it up. Yeah, it made the little A2s whole. Love the system. The speaker is huge compared to the A2s and perhaps I did overbuy, but I'm sending the bookshelf audio system to the basement. Now to get my wife to let me crank it up some to enjoy it.
Pros:
Great sound, complements small speakers well. Works well for me.
Cons:
It really was dented up, would not put it on display. Again, some denting may have been caused in shipment to me as the packing was a bit sparse.

Don't !

Written By Anonymous, Kalispell, MT on Tuesday, December 11, 2012

5 months after purchasing, this sub blitzed--without any abuse. Beyond the Crutchfield 60 day return, I was relegated to Polk support. Their solution: Disassemble the speaker, and send them that and the amplifier, but not the whole thing! Great. 2-3 hours of my time going and coming. Am I happy with Polk? I ordered a Definitive Sub from Crutchfield (who have great customer service) to replace the Polk. Definitives are great speakers (I have a couple).
Pros:
Big bass
Cons:
Unreliable, muddled .

Polk PSW Subwoofer: Very good but not best

Written By SteveL, Kern, CA on Tuesday, November 13, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent for the price. Works excellent with movies - I'm very happy there. Does not work as well with music, tends towards murkiness, depends some on what type of music, adjusting cross-over and level per artist or genre helps. Fortunately my music speakers, Polk RTiA3, have excellent bass and only need a little subwoofer assistance.

Pretty good but definately not the best

Written By Jason, Colorado on Wednesday, August 08, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Polk PSW125 is probably the best bang for your buck that your going to get. With that said, I think it's weak enough to justify spending more on a sub with a more powerful amplifier. This thing sounds perfect when playing movies but lacks significantly in the music department. It does indeed fill the room but does not have the hard hit I would have expected from a 12" woofer. All in all I'm impressed because my home theater is used primarily for movies and this sub performs very well for that use. The fact that it's nowhere near as expensive as something with 300 to 400 watts helps. If you are shopping like I was, and had a budget that required you cut back on the high end equipment, this is a good choice.
Pros:
Fantastic sound in movies, fills the room with bass, built very well, looks good.
Cons:
Weak thump, leaves music feeling "meh".

Great Value for Awesome Bass

Written By McKenzie River Blues, Springfield, OR on Sunday, May 06, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Hooked this Polk PSW125 up to my Onkyo TX-NR 515 and Panasonic plasma. Was immediately concerned that is would be too punishing to tolerate because it was rattling the floor. Then I ran the Audyssey speaker calibration program. Wow, what a difference! Now it spanks the bass when called for and doesn't intrude at the wrong time. Works equally well for movies, music and satellite tv. Love this unit and find it much better than the Infinity that it replaced. I have this in a big room (20 x 20) with 9 foot ceilings. It fills the space with terrific bass.
Pros:
Simple to set up Great manuals Solid bass without negatives
Cons:
Could be a challenge to calibrate without Audyssey Nothing significant for my system

Great Bass, Great Value

Written By Lou G., Sacramento, CA on Monday, April 02, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent bass output, I had to lower the output level to maintain proper balance with my main speakers.
Pros:
Sleek styling, thorough selection of controls and inputs. Cat resistant metal grill.
Cons:
Larger than I realized but it would not be possible to fit a twelve inch speaker into a smaller cabinet.
