Dual

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Dual XHD6430

by Zak Billmeier

The Dual XHD6430 CD receiver gives you lots of features that'll rock your road trip or commute without stretching your budget. Whether you're looking for better AM/FM sound quality and increased programming choices offered by free HD Radio® broadcasts, or you just like to listen to tunes from your iPod®, the XHD6430 makes it happen with intuitive control and ease.

Playing your tunes
Plug your iPod into the front-panel USB input, and you can browse your music library with the XHD6430's controls. This lets you stash your iPod in a secure place and keep it charged while you drive. The USB slot is also perfect for connecting thumb drives or other portable music players. The CD drive plays your favorite MP3 or WMA files, so you can load a disc with multiple albums or stacks of files and hit the road. A front-panel auxiliary input makes the XHD6430 even more versatile, providing a convenient place to plug in your portable player or a Dock & Play satellite radio.

iPod note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

iTunes® tagging
Ever hear a tune you like on the radio but couldn't remember it when you got home? With your iPod connected and an HD Radio station tuned in, you can "tag" the songs you like to buy later on iTunes. Once a song is tagged, you'll be reminded to purchase it from the iTunes store the next time you sync your iPod on your home computer.

Power and tone
Dual designed the XHD6430 to play great no matter what the source. The built-in amplifier boasts plenty of power, to improve your music's clarity and impact, and five selectable EQ curves sculpt the tone to match your car's environment. The two sets of preamp outputs allow plenty of options if you're considering adding amps and subs. The rear output can be switched to subwoofer mode, giving you control over your bass level from the driver's seat.

Talk hands-free
Have a Bluetooth phone? Add the optional Bluetooth module and you'll be able to answer and place calls on your compatible cell phone using the receiver's front panel controls.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the receiver, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

      Display Features

Detachable Face: The head unit features a manual fold-down, detachable faceplate and comes supplied with a hard plastic carrying case. Two face-fixing screws are supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

LCD Display: The head unit features a 2-line black/white LCD display.

Display Priority: You can set the unit to a source display or clock display priority. When set to source display priority, the radio tuner frequency, CD track/elapsed time, selected MP3/WMA information (track name, directory name, title, artist, or album), or Aux display will be displayed.

Clock Display: Normally, the clock display illuminates only when the unit is on. You can program it so the clock is displayed when the ignition key is turned on and the unit is off.

Illumination Dimmer: The head unit's display features three illumination settings. You can choose from Low, Med, or High.

      Audio Section

      CEA-2006 Compliant Amplifier: The Dual XHD6430 features a CEA-2006 Compliant rated amplifier that offers 17 watts RMS x 4 channels in 4 ohms at 1% THD+N with a Signal-To-Noise Ratio of 80dBA.

Selectable Preamp Outputs: The XHD6430 features front and rear preamp outputs. The rear preamp output allows you to adjust from a full-range rear speaker preamp output to a low-pass non-fading subwoofer preamp output. The selectable subwoofer preamp output offers separate volume control from 0-12 to enhance the sound of your connected amplifier and subwoofer without effecting the rest of your car audio speaker system.

Preset EQ Curves: You can choose from six preset curves: Flat, Pop, Jazz, Classic, Beat, and Rock. Any adjustment to the bass or treble settings automatically cancels the current EQ curve.

Bass And Treble: The head unit's Bass and Treble can be independently adjusted from -6 to +6 dB.

Loudness Curve: You can activate this feature to enhance the bass and treble frequencies when listening to music at low volumes.

Source Audio Memory: Individual bass and treble settings are retained in memory for AM, FM, CD, USB, and AUX modes. This allows you to save the Bass and Treble settings separately for each mode.

Source Volume Level: The source volume level control allows a gain adjustment for each audio source (AM, FM, CD, AUX, USB and Bluetooth). You can set the source volume level (-6 to +6) for each mode, depending on the relative volume of each audio source.

Turn-on Volume: You can preset the unit's volume when it is powered on. Each time the unit is turned on, the volume is reset to the preset level regardless of the volume level when the unit was last turned off.

Beep Confirmation: You can enable or disable beep confirmation for the head unit's control buttons.

      Radio Functions

Built-In HD Tuner: In addition to the unit's standard analog AM/FM tuner, the head unit features a built-in HD AM/FM tuner. With the built-in HD Radio tuner, you can receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. This technology will significantly improve audio quality and reception, as well as include information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display. HD radio delivers near CD quality sound to FM broadcasts, and FM sound to AM broadcasts.

Note: Your local stations must be broadcasting HD AM/FM broadcasts to receive HD Radio content. No subscriptions fee needed for HD Radio programming.

HD Seek Mode: In addition to searching through both analog and digital stations, you can search only HD stations by using the head unit's HD Seek Mode. During this mode the head unit will skip over all analog stations and tune to only HD Radio stations.

Multicasting: This head unit also supports HD Radio multicasting and allows multicast HD Radio stations to be stored as presets.

Preset Tuning: You can store up to 18 FM stations and 12 AM stations, including HD Radio stations.  The head unit can automatically store the six strongest stations in the current band selected. Multicast channels are not stored during Auto Preset and must be manually preset.

Scan Tuning: The Scan Tuning feature momentarily previews strong stations on the current band, pausing for fives seconds at each station.

iTunes Tagging: The iTunes Tagging feature of the XHD6430 allows you to "Tag" songs that are playing on HD Radio station and enables them to be purchase later through iTunes. With the touch of a button the unit will remember the title and artist song information, and then transfer that information to your  iPod the next time you connect it to the XHD6430 using the supplied 2-wire cable. The following iPods support iTunes Tagging.

      • iPod classic (80/120/160GB)
      • iPod nano (3rd/4th/5th gen)
      • iPod touch (1st/2nd/3rd gen)
      • iPhone (2G/3G/3GS)

      Disc Playback

Disc Compatibility: The XHD6430 supports playback of CD-Audio, CD-R, and CD-RW discs.

SRAM Buffer: An internal SRAM buffer provides ESP (Electronic Skip Protection) to virtually eliminate skipping of your MP3/WMA CD-R/RW discs and allows alphanumeric or direct track search even while a song is currently playing.

DSP Processor: The head unit's powerful on-board DSP processor decodes MP3/WMA compressed audio files while maintaining near-CD sound quality.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit can play MP3 and WMA files that have been recorded with constant bit rate (MP3: 32-320 kbps/WMA: 32-192 kbps) or variable bit rate compression on CD-R and CD-RW discs. The disc must be recorded using ISO 9660 level 1 or level 2, Yellow Book MODE 1, or Yellow Book MODE 2 FORM 1. In addition, this unit is compatible with ID3 Tag version 1.0 to 2.0. Discs should be recorded with a maximum of 256 folders and files and 8 folder levels.

File/Folder Navigation: You can search for all available files within a particular folder.

Playback Modes: The XHD6430 supports Repeat, Random, and Intro playback modes.

      Aux/USB/iPod Connection

USB Port: The XHD6430 features a front-panel USB port for connecting an external USB mass storage device. The head unit's USB port allows you to play MP3 (32-320kbps constant or variable bit rates) and WMA (32-192kbps constant or variable bit rates) files from most mass storage USB devices formatted in  FAT or FAT32 file system. The XHD6430 has a playback capacity of 48,896 MP3/WMA files with 127maximum number of folders, 382 maximum number of files in each folder and 8 maximum number of folder levels. In addition, the USB input also supports ID3 tags, version 1.0-2.0. The XHD6430 will display either elapsed time (default), track number, clock, track name, directory name, title, artist or album when connecting and playing a USB external source. Your connected portable USB mass storage device will also charge through this head unit's USB port. The head unit does not need to be in the USB mode in order to charge your connected device through the USB port. The XHD6430 offers the following playback and search options through its USB connection.

      • File/Folder Navigation: You can search for all available files within a particular folder.
      • Repeat: Track (continuously repeats selected track), Folder (continuously repeats all files in selected folder)
      • Random: All (plays all tracks in random order), Folder (plays all tracks in folder in random order)
      • Intro: All (plays first 10 seconds of each track on device), Folder (plays first 10 seconds of each track in folder)

Note: MP3/WMA playback sequence is based on the order in which the files are copied to your USB device and begins in the root folder. Any empty folders or folders that do not include MP3/WMA files are skipped.

iPod Operation: The front-panel USB port can also be used to connect your iPod/iPhone to the XHD6430 using your iPod or iPhone's USB/docking cable. Once you have connected your iPod/iPhone and set the XHD6430 in iPod/iPhone mode, your connected iPod/iPhone will automatically begin playback (if a song is playing on the iPod/iPhone before it is connected, it will continue to play). The XHD6430 provides audio playback, navigation control, display information, and charging of your iPod/iPhone. Your iPod/iPhone's controls will be locked during connection. The XHD6430 is "Made for iPod/iPhone" compatible and support the following iPod/iPhone model features (as of July 2010):

Not even one year and the thing needs to be reset frequently due to the solid red light lock up. Sound quality not so great, buttons are finicky. I'm glad this is discontinued, so nobody else will have these problems.
      Pros:
      Cheap.
      Cons:
What's point of cheap if it doesn't work for didly.

I live this radio allows me to use my phone with and iPod cable and charges it at the same time. Love it all around.
      Pros:
Their are a bunch of pros to this radio. The sound is good, a nice bass. And have no other problems.
      Cons:
The radio light does not go very low. On the lowest dimming settings it is pretty bright. But live the radio. Wish the radio head that comes with the radio was blue tooth built in and not have to buy a different head.

      Dual XHD6430 In-Dash Review

Written By Mojoaudioguru, Chicago on Thursday, March 28, 2013
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Surprisingly, it was very easy to install. Took less than 15 minutes, with the supplied harness and frame. The sound quality is great. It puts out the power that its rated at, (50 watts x 4), and the threshold of sound fills my full size van completely. The value was good. But the radio's removable front clip seems a little fragile. Still, it does what it was intended to do. I'm happy with it. I coupled this with 4 6x9 speakers. The original front OEM door speakers, and a pair of Pyle Pro audio tri-axials for the rear deck. Again, the sound quality is fantastic. For what it's worth, it did the trick. I'm happy. Crutchfield knowledge and helpful hints, helped out tremendously. The only one's in the industry that supplies harnesses, and materials specifically to employ an easy worry-free install.
      Pros:
Fragile front plate. CD skips and jumps until the memory / buffer catches up.
      Cons:
Does what it's intended to do with all it's features. The Blue Tooth is a nice touch and the mute button is a well needed feature.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I also only get the red circle of death. Purchased in October, I actually had it professionally installed but it has been non-working now for a while. I thought it might have been a fuse. Replaced that. It came back on for half a day and is now back to the red light around the power/volume button. Serves me right trying to save a couple bucks. Will be contacting Dual but not with high hopes from what I am reading here.
      Pros:
      HD radio, tagging, usb
      Cons:
      Ummm, doesn't work

Good until it started locking up...

Written By RC, Cary, NC on Sunday, January 13, 2013
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice stereo, and fit my car perfectly. Great reception, sound quality and features. However, after about 9 months, it has begun to inexplicably "lock up" on me. Like any other stereo, when I park my car and turn off the ignition, I expect to be able to use the stereo again when I get in my car. However, it has now reached the point where it locks up and will not power on about once a week. I must pop off the faceplate and do a reset. I lose all of my settings from my clock to my preset stations. If there is a good side to this it is that I use it primarily with my satellite radio, so when it locks up, I only lose about 4 or 5 local stations and my operating preferences. Now I find myself trying to find the receipt so I can get it in under warranty.
      Pros:
Price. Good reception, features, easy to install.
      Cons:
Has begun to lock up about once a week for no reason. Usually after turning off ignition and coming back later and starting car. Other reviews seem to point to this being a common problem.

Great radio. Lots of features. Only complaint is the interface is a bit complicated compared to all the modern touch screen stuff. Definitely the early 2000s style with all the lights and buttons.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed it after my old stereo got ripped off. I didn't want to spend too much but wanted the USB port.

It installed well and worked as designed for a few months until one night it just up and died.

It is getting power, the lighted ring around the volume knob is red, but it will not power on no matter what I do.

I see now, that it has been discontinued. I think I know why.
      Pros:
      Cheap.
      Cons:
Not so cheap when it only gives you a few months of tunes.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking at a similar Kenwood model that was about double the cost with the same features. Some people complain about the ease of use in their reviews. If you read the owners manual, you will have no problem programming and using many of the features. The HD will drop off as you get to the outskirts of major metropolitan areas. If you are within range, there are no issues. The iPod plug works great! The CD player has some issues displaying the track names on home-made CD's but the sound is great. Be sure to get the wire harness for easy installation. I installed this in a 1994 Lincoln Town Car as a replacement for the cassette AM/FM radio and it is HUGE impovement in sound quality and features. I did purchase the Bluetooth adapter. The sound coming into the car is great but the people on the other end say they hear a buzzing sound. Probably due to a gounding issue.
      Pros:
Great value for the features included HD CD iPod connectivity
      Cons:
Bluetooth adapter buzz CD home-made track names not displayed on radio screen.

Using w/ bluetooth in Commercial KENWORTH WORK TRUCK - BLUETOOTH great

Written By M, ST, CLOUD,MN on Wednesday, October 31, 2012
      Installed in a 1988 Mazda B Series
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

With the new "no cell phone in commercial vehicle" law, only bluetooth handsfree is acceptable. So I looked this up online and my emplyer bought it with the optional matching boothtooth, for my big work truck I use as a heavy equiptment field mechanic.. I am on the road a lot and need to pick up calls a lot and it was really not an option to get an in the ear bluetooth with all my mechanic issues - mainly I'm always oily, dirty, you get the picture! This is a great unit, set up great with my basic cell phone. I get in, turn on my bluetooth on my cell, the stereo knows what to do, I get a call, I push the button, the mic is good, everyone hears me. I am in a VERY NOISY TRUCK! So, I give it a A+. I didn't really review it in the "cool factor" as I guess it is cool, I dont know! So a 4 seemed like a good rating, the options are cool! It sounds good, my speakers are not great and with better speakers the whole thing will be better! I have to have t he treble all the way up for the bluetooth - again, better speakers are needed and I will be getting to those. As a sidenote, liked this unit so much, bought another one for my 2002 Dodge Pick up and will install it soon and add another review if anything else should be noteworthy.
      Pros:
Whole unit functions great with bluetooth adapter and sound is great, easy, no fail, big truck likes it!
      Cons:
None really, for the price it would be dumb to complain.

      Unit stopped working

Written By cliffro, Albany NY on Wednesday, October 17, 2012
Installed in a 2003 Honda CRV LX
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed unit in a Honda CRV.

Had the same problem as another reviewer: After about a week of use, the radio would not turn on. The on button was lit but the radio itself would not turn on. Trouble shooting guide does not seem to get at the problem. Will have to take unit out presumably to see if it's the fuse. (It's not the under dash radio fuse - that one is fine.)

Connected black cable to black cable (ground) with the indicated wire connector pack that I bought with the radio. Perhaps the radio black wire should have gone to chassis instead.
      Pros:
Really enjoyed it when it was working.
      Cons:
      Stopped working
