Retrosound

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Retrosound Model Two

Old school looks, new technology

Retrosound's Model Two digital media receiver brings the modern world to your vintage vehicle. Now you can cruise in style and still enjoy iPod® control, Bluetooth® hands-free phone calls, and other amenities. Retrosound designed the Model Two receiver to mount in almost any classic car, using an ingenious adjustable shaft system that adapts to any dash opening. And the Model Two is available in black, chrome, or ivory, so you'll have a perfect match for your classic car's interior. (Note: this receiver does not play CDs.)

Hands-free calling and digital sound

The Model Two looks like an old-fashioned radio, but it offers all the modern conveniences. You can talk hands-free or stream audio programming to the receiver with your smartphone, and you can connect your iPod or USB thumb drive to the two rear USB ports. You'll find two auxiliary inputs on the rear of the receiver for other sources, like a satellite radio tuner. The Model Two also offers excellent AM/FM reception, and will display song titles from any radio station that's broadcasting text information.

Installation options

This Retrosound receiver features two sets of preamp outputs that make it easier to add amps and subs to your vehicle. You can adjust your bass from the driver's seat using the subwoofer level controls and variable low-pass crossover.

This digital media receiver will not play CDs. If you want to play CDs in your vehicle, we offer a wide selection of CD receivers.

      Great Radio for the price!

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The new Retrosound model 2 radio is Great. It's small and light and looks good in my 1969 cutlass 442 dash. I bought this radio for all the features it has, like the buttons on the radio that make it old. The knobs look like the older knobs. It tunes in the radio stations really good. Then you have all the preset stations that you can tune in. With the Polk speakers i bought from Crutchfield, this radio sounds great. When I can't find anything on the radio I have the I Pod I can plug in. I can listen to what ever I want to listen to, Rock, County, Oldies, or anything on my I Pod by a click of button. That's Great. Then you have the Bluetooth. With a push of a button you can answer your phone hands free. You don't have to fight to get to your phone. All I can say is that it's a Great radio for the price.
      Pros:
Bluetooth, I Pod, flash drive, back light color and light weight
      Cons:
Knobs take time to get used to

      Model 2 in my vw

      Written By Ulrich66, Kenosha,WI on Friday, April 12, 2013

I've purchased a couple of Retrosound radios over the past few years for my 67 VW Bug and my 66 Mustang-- and was happy with them. They had a few bugs, but they were light years ahead of anything else out there that would fit my cars. Crutchfield has always given me great service. I got the Model 2 IVO last month for my VW bug, and was blown away as to how it looks in my dash. The Model 2 I got was the one with ivory push buttons and ivory knobs, at first glance in looking at the interior of my car you'd never know it was a modern featured radio. This thing performs great and looks great doing it. I bring my iPad to car shows and it's got a ton of music on it, I can stream music from my iPad through this radio and it sounds amazing. I am using the Retrosound kick panels and their 6.5" DVC dash speaker and have a sound ordinance 8" sub under my passenger seat, it's a great combo and love the sound quality. This will make my Friday night cruises so nice down Sheridan road, and my visits with the family through the 50's style drive thrus we have here so nice--- my bowling buddies are quite envious, you should have seen their face when I changed the music tracks streaming from my Pandora account from the phone--- they wanted one for their classic cars too! --- Thanks Crutchfield for great service and to Retrosound for making such a full featured radio, you were close before, but now you've got it right--- Awesome! --- Safe Cruising--- John
      Pros:
-- Bluetooth (both hands free, and audio streaming) --- multi color backlighting (matches my red dakota digital guages perfectly --- iPod/iPhone control via the radio--- this rocks --- charges my iPhone, in an almost 50 year old car--- ! --- sub output w/ volume control-- connected the Model Two's sub out to my powered Sound Ordinance subwoofer-- what a great feature! --- appearance--- nothing made today looks this good --- they have the vw look down pat, you won't believe the look!
      Cons:
-- Need patience to install--- these take some work to put in, but when it's done you'll be happy -- You'll get sick of people asking you about it, so bone up on all the features --- the manual is 40 pages!

Has promise, but doesn't work for me.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not a lot of review or commentary out there, and barely any details on how the ipod/iphone support works.

For me, I need to be able to access ratings, playlists, etc - basically be able to control the ipod -from- the ipod, but also be able track skip and autostart/autostop using the head unit.

Alas - the retrosound model two can ONLY operate the ipod/iphone in accessory mode, which prevents any control using the i device.

On the plus side: trim kits look nice and flexible, with plenty of options (be warned - crutchfield did not actually include the trim kit with my order to RS, so RS didn't ship one. so I've only seen pictures).

Feature set (6 channel out, build in crossovers, etc) looked extremely nice and just what I wanted.... the bluetooth support would have been an interesting plus.

But my primary need is for proper ipod control, and this fails at that.

      :(
      Pros:
nice feature set, flexible knob layout, build in crossover and sub out...
      Cons:
      useless ipod control.
