Pioneer

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Pioneer DEH-33HD

by Ken Nail

Pioneer puts HD Radio™ right where you want it — built into the tuner of the DEH-33HD CD receiver. You'll enjoy the unparalleled sound quality and extra features that distinguish HD Radio from regular broadcasts. And this stylish receiver covers almost every other base in the digital media ballpark too, with simple controls that can whip through your music files and menus in a flash.

HD Radio sounds better
You'll hear the difference when you tune in a station that's broadcasting HD Radio signals — FM broadcasts approach CD-quality sound, with no static or audio distortion. But that's just part of the story. You'll also have access to the additional programming offered on the extra channels broadcast by HD Radio stations, choices that aren't available to regular radio listeners.

Great versatility
The DEH-33HD also includes auxiliary and USB inputs on its front panel, so you can enjoy your music from a variety of sources. And it's compatible with your iPod and iPhone — just plug them into the USB port for direct control.

Pioneer's famed MOSFET amplifier delivers high-fidelity performance with plenty of "real world" power. You'll experience better sound when you listen to your MP3 and WMA files, as the Advanced Sound Retriever reverses the compression process to add back some of the sonic info that's lost in the digital conversion.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

    Display Features

Detachable Face Security: This unit features Detachable Face Security. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit.

White OEL Display: The DEH-33HD features a bright white OEL Display (1-line/10-Character) that can display upper- and lower-case characters. This display makes it easy to read and cycle through song titles, artists, and other texts.

Ever Scroll: When the Ever Scroll feature is set to On, recorded text information scrolls continuously on the display. It will auto-scroll up to 64 characters. Set this feature to Off if you prefer the information to scroll only once.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the Clock Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the Source button turns off audio output, but the clock display remains on. When the Clock Display has been turned off, pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely. Even if you have turned the radio completely off you can view the clock display by pressing the clock button. The clock will then remain On until you turn it back Off. When the unit is On you can select between the clock display or the audio track/tuner display.

    Audio Section

MOSFET Amplifier: The DEH-33HD is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the DEH-33HD are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the DEH-33HD are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)

3-Way Rotary Commander: The Pioneer DEH-33HD features a 3-Way Rotary Commander for easy control. You can scroll through your music and audio settings with greater ease using the 3-way rotary commander.

Sound Retriever: The Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. When Sound Retriever is on, the high frequency range is compensated to match the frequency response curve to the original sound. There are two available levels of the Sound Retriever effect.

EEQ (Easy EQ): The DEH-33HD is equipped with a 3-band EQ with 6 preset EQ settings: Powerful, Dynamic, Vocal, Natural, Custom, and EQ Flat. The Custom band can be adjusted as follows:

    • Bass: +/- 6dB at 100 Hz
    • Mid: +/- 6dB at 1 kHz
    • Treble: +/- 6dB at 10 kHz

Loudness: The Loudness feature compensates for deficiencies in the low and high sound ranges at low volume. You can set the Loudness feature to Low, Mid, High, or Off.

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4dB to +4dB.

Dual 2.0-Volt Preamp Outputs: The Pioneer DEH-33HD features two pair of 2.0-volt preamp outputs (Front & Rear/SW). The unit's rear preamp output can be configured as a fading rear-channel output or a non-fading subwoofer output with a low-pass filter, phase adjustment, and output level control.

Subwoofer Controls: When the subwoofer output is activated, you can select the frequency of the 18dB/octave low pass filter (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz), select the subwoofer phase (normal/reverse), and the subwoofer gain (+6 to -24).

Switchable Rear Channel/Subwoofer Speaker Output: The rear speaker outputs can be set to provide full range output with full fading capability, or they can be set to provide non-fading subwoofer (low-pass) output. When the rear speaker outputs are set to subwoofer mode, the rear preamp outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer outputs. When set for subwoofer operation, you can connect the rear speaker leads directly to two small 4-ohm passive subwoofers or a dual voice coil sub with 4-ohm voice coils. If you prefer to use a single 2-ohm subwoofer, you can connect the woofer to one set of speaker leads, leaving the other set of rear leads disconnected. The maximum output provided when a 2-ohm load is connected to one set of leads is 70 watts.

    Radio Functions

HD Radio: The Pioneer DEH-33HD's built-in HD Radio tuner lets you listen to the radio with the same fidelity as your digital music. HD Radio features high quality audio, FM multi-casting, and data services. With HD Radio, your FM stations offer near CD-quality sound, AM stations provide FM-quality sound, and there is crystal-clear reception with no audio distortion. The unit's tuner also supports analog AM/FM broadcasts.

Note: HD Radio is the system for digital AM and FM broadcasting in the U.S. More than 2,000 radio stations are broadcasting their primary signals in digital HD Radio technology, as a free service. Go to HDRadio.com to check for HD Radio stations in your area.

RDS: The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible analog or HD AM/FM stations.

Reception Blending: If a digital broadcast reception condition gets poor, this unit automatically switches to the analog broadcast of the same frequency level. If this function is set to "On", the tuner switches between digital broadcast and analog broadcast automatically. If this function is 'Off', reception will be conducted within an analog broadcast.

BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest analog or HD stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those analog and HD radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 level of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

Auto Off Eject: When you eject a disc, the unit will automatically power off (unless you switch sources before ejecting the disc).

Installation Angle: Optimum CD playback performance is obtained when the unit is installed at an angle of less than 60-degrees.

    USB/iPod/Aux Connection

    Excellent HD Radio

Written By Neofelis, Clarksville, TN on Tuesday, July 10, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent all around HD radio, nothing to spectacular about any one feature but the fact that it has them all (HD, iPod, Mp3 CD, Aux and USB) for a great price in a very selective fm radio is amazing.
    Pros:
Excellent reception (even in back woods Kentucky), HD "links" quickly and fills with analog when needed
    Cons:
Integration could be better, it's red and white and does not dim at night

Dont buy it for the HD RADIO

Great unit but the unit broke in the first two months. Not to mention the hd radio fades in and out and I live just miles from the station. The hd radio sounds good but there is a "blending feature"that pioneer added to there radio, makes it so when the hd signal is weak it goes automaticlly to standard radio. So the whole time you drive, youre just hearing standard and hd radio mixed and it sounds bad.Other reviewers have said the same thing but I dismissed it because I live close to the radio station I listen to.unit now turns on and off by itself.goodbye poineer,Hello sony!!!!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this stereo to replace the broken stock stereo in my wife's G6. Installation went smooth and the product seems well constructed. My wife is not super tech savy and the stereo is perfect for her. It has all of the functions she wanted: (USB, AUX, HD radio). It is very easy to use and understand, however I will say that the integration with her iphone is not very intuitive and somewhat clunky at times, but it is not really an issue. Overall this is a good product for a good price.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the value, you cannot beat this product. I was looking for HD radio & front USB output mainly. It was either this unit or the Dual. I chose this one because it came with all the free gear and has RDS. Installed it in about 2 hours. Main problem was getting an old Panasonic unit out without the right tools. I cut my hand and wanted to break the old unit, but I didn't and will probably sell it on Ebay. The new Pioneer unit sounds great. I read about the complaints of it being hard to use. I found it just like all aftermarket units in functionality. So, I was set the clock and turned off demo mode pretty quickly. Still learning about the HD radio. Have not tried the USB yet, but will soon.I will probably look through the manual tonight.
    Pros:
    Value, RDS, HD radio, USB
    Cons:
A lot of button presses to view the RDS, but what do you expect from a single DIN.

Like the unit just fine as far as sound and quality. I'm just not impressed with the radios ability to pick up as I was told it would. I'm in a tough location I realize.

The Pioneer DEH-33HD is an excellent value for the budget-minded person. Easy to install and ever better to listen to as you cruise down the road with your new "sounds" blazing. I hooked up my stock speakers and they sound good. Will most likely purchase new speakers in the future. One cannot go wrong with this stereo decision!
    Pros:
Easy to install and the lighted display is great!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Crutchfield support delivery and support was fine. bought two of these. Installation in the Volvo was pretty simple. After looking at the instructions for the Acura, I bailed on it and took it to a pro. $75. Main problem - Pioneer is no Apple. The user interface is deplorable. Read the manual several times and experiment with settings until you get a feel for it. It just doesn't make sense. From setting balance to changing iPod functions. The remote is silly unless you want someone in the back seat in control. You need to point it at the thing to work so mounting on console or something is a no go. The main knob is too small and slick and there is no mute button on the unit, just the remote. Red lights and moving lights are never welcome in the drivers view. The HD radio in blend mode constantly switches between the HD and FM bands with a very noticeable gain/volume change when it does.
    Pros:
    General good sound quality
    Cons:
    see above.

i like the sound and power, but it is kind of hard to figure out how to use, even after reading the manual. i've had two other pioneer stereos, and this is by far significantly harder to use. i will probably return, and get the hd ready jvc instead.
    Pros:
hd radio, more power than stock, usb and 3.5 mm inputs
    Cons:
hard to use, even with manual. took me a bit to figure out the hd radio.,

I am partial to this unit because I love Pioneer units, but this one is great. I put it in my old 97 Powerstroke and it works amazing. I am always afraid of the skipping factor since my truck is older and doesn't ride like newer truck but this unit has not issues with skipping.
    Pros:
nice clean look, great sound, easy to use
    Cons:
    Nothing yet.

Lot of features! 100x better sound and options than factory radio. I found it easy to install and it has a lot of room for future upgrades. HD is fair, it really depends on the HD content in your area. Cheap USB door on front... kinda ripped that off :(
    Pros:
    Features, sound and HD
    Cons:
Quality of buttons and faceplate feel cheap.

    Godd product with some compromises

Written By BillC, Mount Pleasant, SC on Thursday, January 19, 2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The receiver sounds good and has enough power for me. It is equal to or better than the stock unit it replaced in my 1999 Nissan Altima. The main reason I swapped out was the fact that the stock unit did not have an aux jack. This unit added that and the usb port as well as an extra compartment to store stuff (the old unit was a double DIN). The Pioneer has HD radio, which I thought I would use and don't. It works well with my Ipod Touch for listening to podcasts through the usb port. That is the main thing I use it for. I would use the aux jack to listen to music because the interface is more difficult to use to find a song or album. It works great for podcasts and playlists. If I used it more, I would probably get to learn it better. The usb port does charge my iPod while I am listening. I tried to use the usb port to listen to music and podcasts on my Android phone. It was very frustrating and I gave up and used the aux port. This unit does not retract the antenna when you are listening to modes other than radio. Because I seldom listen to radio, I installed a separate switch retract the antenna. For what it is, it is a great unit and I would recommend it to someone looking for an inexpensive replacement.
    Pros:
Great sound USB Port HD Radio Generally easy to use
    Cons:
Antenna does not retract when you switch from radio mode.

    Nice upgrade from OEM

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced my OEM AM/FM cassette in the old Ram, so I guess anything is an improvement. But this sounds at least as good as my VW's touch screen. Installation was no-brainer from back in the day when I would need to fabricate everything. Replaced the speakers too, so all went together nice. It is a little difficult to adjust, one dial navigates down through the menu's, but most aftermarket seem to have left simple back in the seventies. HD nice around Philly, most stations have no commercials, USB nice feature to have.
    Pros:
    good sound and quality
    Cons:
    complex controls to adjust

Great Radio. Read the manual. Then read it again.

The Good. I put this into my daily driver / and not a show car and my concern is for fidelity, clarity and not "booming bass" and on these points, the Pioneer 33HD works great. It can do / read every format I want it to and at a reasonable price. This is the reason I gave it such high marks on most of the attributes.

The only downside is also where I lowballed it ... .

The Bad. UI & Ergo. Only late model BMW drivers can understand such poor UI design. Instead of having buttons dedicated to specific functions, most of the buttons on the dash are multifunction buttons that change based upon what mode the radio is in and whether the radio is "on" or not. If you buy this radio - you will both love the flexibility and sound & hate the maddening buttons and finger twisting you need to get to where you want to go.

Even reading the manual won't solve all your problems (I'm a voracious manual reading freak and my questions weren't answered, I can only imagine the frustration other non-readers will feel) - and to top it off, some questions, such as setting the time, require you to go to the website and watch a video FAQ (I kid you not) to learn how to do it.

Oh and don't think of trying to change any settings while driving ... seriously ... I don't want to be hit by any other 33HD users while on the road :-P
    Pros:
This head unit has it all, CD/FM/AM/MP3/HD/USB/iOS+App mode. Great sound quality.
    Cons:
    The UI and ergonomics.
